5. Plasmodium, Saurocytozoon and Haemocystidium parasites (Apicomplexa: Plasmodiidae) from the rock agama, Laudakia caucasia (Sauria: Agamidae), in southern Asia

- Subject:
- blood parasites, plasmodiids, Plasmodium caucasica sp. n., Saurocytozoon agamidorum sp. n., Haemocystidium grahami, lizards, Pakistan, and Azerbaijan
- Language:
- English
- Description:
- The rock agama, Laudakia caucasia Eichwald (Agamidae) is host to Plasmodium caucasica sp. n. and Saurocytozoon agamidorum sp. n. in western Pakistan. Plasmodium caucasica is characterized by very large meronts, 11-21 by 8-17 µm that produce 32-67 merozoites, which nearly fill the host erythrocyte, and smaller, ovoid to elongate gametocytes, 6-14 by 2.5-6 µm, with length by width (LW) 21-55 µm2, and L/W ratio 1.0-4.0. Host cells are usually mature erythrocytes. In Azerbaijan, P. caucasica parasitizes immature erythroid cells. Dimensions of meronts are 10-16 by 6-12 µm, and merozoite numbers are 12-44. Gametocytes are 6-14 by 3-6 µm, with LW 31-56 µm2, and L/W ratio 1.0-4.0. Saurocytozoon agamidorum sp. n. gametocytes are 6.5-13 µm in diameter, with LW 35-79 µm2, and L/W ratio 1.0-2.2. They occupy lymphocytes as host cells, which are greatly distorted by gametocyte presence and often show nuclei nearly divided into two portions, one portion at each end of the cell. Haemocystidium grahami (Shortt, 1922), redescribed from material found in L. caucasia from Azerbaijan, has rounded to elongate gametocytes, 8-19.5 by 4-8 µm, LW 60.5-102 µm2, and L/W ratio 1.0-4.5. The prominent light golden pigment granules often coalesce to nearly cover the surface of the gametocyte. The presence of P. caucasica and S. agamidorum extends the range of the two genera in saurian hosts throughout much of the southern Asia mainland.

6. Rotational motion of material in surges

- Subject:
- heliophysics, surges, and material rotation
- Language:
- Czech
- Description:
- The spectra of three surges observed on September 20 and October 2, 1979 havebeen analysed. Rotational velocities have been evaluated for the wide range of heights above the chromosphere. The obtained results show that the rotational velocity decreases from above a hundred km/s at the surge bases to tens km/s at the surge tops. Generally, this tendency is independent of the surge evolution stage.

7. Tyrosyl residue at or near the active site of maize NADP-malic enzyme

- Subject:
- malate, Mg, pH, tetranitromethane, and Zea
- Language:
- Multiple languages
- Description:
- Incubation of maize NADP-malic enzyme with tetranitromethane (TNM) resulted in a total loss of enzyme activity. The loss of enzyme activity was not observed at pH 6.3 but at pH 8.0. NADP-malic enzyme was inactivated to almost 90 % by incubation with an 80-fold molar excess of TNM for 5 min at 30 °C. The substrate malate or Mg2+ alone gave no protection, while NADP provided considerable protection. NADP in the presence of malate and Mg2+ totally protected the enzyme activity, suggesting that tyrosine residue may be located at or near the active site of maize NADP-malic enzyme. The spectral analysis of the modified enzyme indicated that modification of at least one tyrosine residue per subunit resulted in complete loss of the enzyme activity. The fluorescence study of unmodified and modified enzymes postulated that essential tyrosine residue at maize NADP-malic enzyme is possibly involved in malate binding. and S. R. Rao, B. G. Kamath, A. - Subject:
- throughfall, spatial variability, temporal stability, mixed evergreen-deciduous broadleaved forest, and Shennongjia
- Language:
- Slovak
- Description:
- Mixed evergreen-deciduous broadleaved forest is the transitional type of evergreen broadleaved forest and deciduous broadleaved forest, and plays a unique eco-hydrologic role in terrestrial ecosystem. We investigated the spatiotemporal patterns of throughfall volume of the forest type in Shennongjia, central China. The results indicated that throughfall represented 84.8% of gross rainfall in the forest. The mean CV (coefficient of variation) of throughfall was 27.27%. Inter-event variability in stand-scale throughfall generation can be substantially altered due to changes in rainfall characteristics, throughfall CV decreased with increasing rainfall amount and intensity, and reached a quasi-constant level when rainfall amount reached 25 mm or rainfall intensity reached 2 mm h–1. During the leafed period, the spatial pattern of throughfall was highly temporal stable, which may result in spatial heterogeneity of soil moisture.
