- Description:
- The mechanisms which permit Leishmania to survive inside macrophages are not totally understood although it is known that prolonged culture in vitro results in loss of virulence. One of the cell surface molecules often implicated in virulence mechanisms is the glycoprotein of 63 kDa (gp63). In this work we studied changes in infectivity of L. infantum promastigotes maintained in vitro by subcultures, correlated with the proteolytic activity of gp63. It was observed that L. infantum MON-1 promastigotes became unable to establish an infection after 6 subcultures in vitro independently of the size of inoculum. This corresponded to a diminution of proteolytic activity of gp63. L infantum MON-1 promastigotes inoculated in hamsters viscera-lize in the mononuclear phagocytic system accompanied by an antibody response. A correlation between antibody response, inoculum size and promasti gote origin was verified. L donovani MON-18 and L. infantum MON-24 promastigotes produced a specific humoral response but failed to establish an infection in hamsters regardless of all the passages tested.

- Description:
- The effects of drought on thylakoid acyl lipid composition, photosynthetic capacity (P max), and electrolyte lekage were evaluated in two-months-old peanut cultivars (57-422, 73-30, GC 8-35) growing in a glasshouse. For lipid studies, plants were submitted to three treatments by withholding irrigation: control (C), mild water stress (S1), and severe water stress (S2). Concerning membrane and photosynthetic capacity stability, drought was imposed by polyethylene glycol (PEG 600). In the cv. 73-30 a sharp decrease in the content of thylakoid acyl lipids was observed, already under S1 conditions, whereas cv. 57-422 was strongly affected only under S2. Cv. GC 8-35 had the lowest content of acyl lipids under control conditions, a significant increase under S1 conditions, and only under S2 a decrease occurred. Thus concerning lipid stability, cv. 73-30 was the most sensitive. Among lipid classes, phospholipids and galactolipids were similarly affected, as was MGDG relatively to DGDG. Water deficit imposed by PEG induced a higher increase in electrolyte leakage in cv. 73-30 than in the other cvs. A positive relationship between acyl lipid concentration and membrane integrity was found in all studied cvs. A positive association between acyl lipid concentration, membrane integrity, and P max was found in the cvs. 57-422 and 73-30. and J. - Language:

- Description:
- A greater blue-eared glossy starling Lamprotornis chalybaeus Ehrenburg from a large flight aviary in Hong Kong was found on post mortem to be infected with Plasmodium octamerium Manwell, 1968, Plasmodium cf. relictum (Grassi et Feletti, 1891) and Haemoproteus cf. pastoris Mello, 1935. Descriptions of their morphology are provided as none of the examined parasites fully concord with their type (or neotype) material descriptions. Plasmodium octamerium has been recorded in avian hosts from geographically distant locations, suggesting that infection in imported hosts may persist in a chronic state for a long period. This Plasmodium species as well as P. relictum are evidently not fastidious in choice of passeriform hosts and are transmitted by ubiquitous domestic mosquito vectors, apparently facilitating their proliferation among zoo and aviary inhabitants. The Haemoproteus infection appears to be conspecific with H. cf. pastoris reported from a myna (Acridotheres tristis) in Singapore. Mynas are also common in Hong Kong, which suggests a possible cross-transmission of infection between these two starlings.

- Description:
- The mathematical analysis and interpretation of photographic operation of a digital video-camera in assumed linear electro-optical imaging of a static two-dimensional reflection random object (chart) is included in this article. For such a purpose, the adequately structured block-simulation model of linear transfer of optical and electrical image signals is exploited. It contains the all basic characteristic processes of a digital video-camera. These processes, influenced by the camera noises, are included in the established locally-shift variant transfer equations of the power spectral density and also in their locally-shift invariant forms, which are requisited for establishing the chosen modern quality criterion of the tested digital video-camera of form of the squared modulation transfer function. Beside presentation of conditions of locally-shift invariant electro-optical imaging, the relevant measuring arrangement, containing the white-noise reflection random chart (generated by a production PC) and the evaluation PC for computations of the squared modulation transfer function of a tested digital video-camera, is described. and Článek obsahuje matematickou analýzu a interpretaci fotografické činnosti digitální videokamery při předpokládaném lineárním elektrooptickém zobrazení statického dvourozměrného reflexního náhodného předmětu (testu).
