For more than three decades, Czech linguists strove to establish an institution devoted to Czech linguistic bohemistics in the area of theoretical research as well as the practical care of the Czech language. That did not happen until 1946, when Ustav pro jazyk cesky (''Institute for the Czech Language'') was established, with the Kancelar Slovniku jazyka ceskeho (''Office for the Dictionary of the Czech Language'') considered as its first direct predecessor. The Office, however, was primarily focused on lexicography (even though the concept of standardisation, regional dialects, orthography, orthoepy, stylistic characteristics of words, etymology and other disciplines also required attention, too, given the comprehensive approach to the preparation of an interpretative dictionary), and was included in the Institute as its Department of Lexicography. The establishment of the other departments of the Institute was then influenced by the - sometimes non-systemic - activities of the Class III. committees, and sometimes joint Class I, III and IV committees, of the Czech Academy which either wholly or in part dealt with the linguistic aspects of the matter. The Department of Dialectology at the Institute was able to build upon the earlier research carried out by the Committee for Dialectology, the Department for the Study of New Standardised Czech Language followed up on the activities of the Committee for Orthoepy, the Department of Language History used the materials produced by the Committee for the Study of the Old Czech Bible and the Committee for Photocopying Manuscripts and Old Prints. Work on gathering linguistic papers was transferred smoothly from the Committee for Bibliography to the Department of Bibliography at the Institute. The Cabinet of Phonetics, established at the Institute in 1953, directly based its work on the papers produced by the Committee for Phonography, Committee for Orthoepy and Committee for Phonetics. The Department of Onomastics, included in the Institute for the Czech Language no earlier than in 1969, was a direct successor of the Committee for Topography., and Překlad resumé: Věra Dvořáčková a Melvyn Clarke
Vývoj výstavby technické sekce ČSAV se v rámci dobových možností vyvíjel poměrně utěšeně, což bylo dáno především tím, že vedle věd přírodních se právě i ty technické staly v poválečném období značně preferovanou oblastí celospolečenského dosahu., In early 1952 four sections of the Government Commission for the Creation of a Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, including the Technical Section, launched their activities. Its objective was to obtain the personnel, deployment and equipment required in the technical disciplines under consideration to set up a functional academic centre, or ideally, an institute. In keeping with post-1948 political conditions, procedure kept in line with that of the Soviet Academy of Sciences, particularly at a formal and organizational level, but previous domestic scientific development was definitely not ignored. As for the technical fields, continuity was most clearly identifiable with regard to the Masaryk Academy of Labour, its committees and membership. The endeavour to transfer already existing research and experimentation resources from production sectors or higher education only found any substantial response in the case of the Institute for Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, established at CSAS on the basis of the old institutes and laboratories at the Czech University of Technology Faculty of Civil Engineering and the Heavy Engineering Research Institute. However, throughout the 1950s technical science academic establishments gained strength fairly quickly, giving rise to a number of new institutes either through the expansion and re-equipping of existing committees and laboratories, or by the institutional underpinning of specialized disciplines that were being newly established. The creation of CSAS technical sections made fairly decent progress considering the circumstances of the period, primarily because not only natural sciences, but in particular technical sciences came to be especially favoured areas throughout society during the postwar period. This study, the first substantial survey of the history of the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics at the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences (CSAS ITAM), focuses on redeployment and organizational developments at the institute. The history of the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics at the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences goes back to 1921, when its first direct predecessor was established, the Research and Experimental Institute for Materials and Building Structures (as of 1947 Klokner's Research and Experimental Institute for Materials and Building Structures) at the Czech Technical University. This was ascribed primary importance in the early 1950s when the CSAS was established, as it formed the core of the first technicallybased Academic institute, the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (ITAM). The development of the organizational structure of this new institute was fairly complex, reflecting not only the level of scientific research progress achieved within the areas under review, as well as Academy requirements on ITAM activities, but also indirectly the state of the Czechoslovak economy and society at that time. Of no less interest was the redeployment situation at the institute associated primarily with the old Na Slovanech (Emmaus) monastery, which was allocated to ITAM by the operations administrator. For the primarily construction-oriented Academy staff this building was a great challenge, as well as a considerable constraint: adequate working conditions needed to be acquired for employees and an experimental base needed to be created, while respecting the historical value of the premises.
