5. Between resentment and forgiveness: public histories in the Czech and South African transitions
- Creator:

- Type:
- model:article and TEXT
- Subject:
- filozofie, philosophy, post-socialism, post-colonialism, apartheid, memory, history, Czech Republic, South Africa, 5, and 101
- Language:
- Czech
- Description:
- Departing from the recent scholarship that acknowledges fundamental similarities in the post-colonial and the post-socialist experiences, the article argues that comparisons across these two contexts and paradigms prove themselves to be a useful tool for analysis of specific problems of transitioning societies. This claim is demonstrated by examination of the making of public history of the recent past in the Czech Republic and South Africa. Two authoritative aspects of public history are considered: the state-sanctioned commemoration and historiography. Whereas the South African state has sought by the means of transitional justice to reconcile the former victims and victimizers in a shared quest for the truth, the Czech state prioritizes legislative and judiciary assignment of retroactive blame. The South African historiography is closely tied to collective memory and prefers the approach of social history. The Czech historiography of the recent past is dominated by the totalitarian paradigm and prioritizes archival work. In both cases, the political and the historiographical projects seem to overlap in crucial points. It is suggested that the articulation of public history as either resentment or forgiveness may have been ultimately predetermined by the forms of resistance to the opressive regimes.

6. Epistemologies of spaces and places: an introduction

- Language:
- Czech
- Description:
- The article introduces a special themed issue of Theory of Science on epistemologies of spaces and places. It provides a disciplinary context of the theme and reviews some of the key arguments that led to the so-called spatial turn in social sciences and the humanities. Science studies in the broad sense (including social studies of science and technology, history and philosophy of science) have also been affected by this shift of research interest to spatial aspects of science at both micro- and macro-levels. Scientific knowledge has been subject to analyses that stress its local contingencies, mobility and dependencies on spatial arrangements. The ensuing new epistemologies require novel concepts or reconsideration of the older terms, such as universality or objectivity., Tento článek uvozuje zvláštní tematické číslo Teorie vědy věnované epistemologiím prostorů a míst. Článek představuje oborový kontext tématu a poskytuje přehled některých klíčových argumentů, jež vedly k takzvanému prostorovému obratu v sociálních a humanitních vědách. Následné nové epistemologie vyžadují nové koncepty či přehodnocení starších termínů, jako univerzalita a objektvita., and Radim Hladík.

- Description:
- The essay attempts to rethink the relationships between styles, publics, and politics, as well as the position of intellectuals in it. Any writing, even in the most private form of a diary, as an example from the George Orwell’s novel 1984 shows, is addressed to a public. Paradoxically, the public only exists, as Warner asserts, by virtue of its own address. In this sense, style does perform a political function. However, the critics of the opaque writing of some leftist academics overlook that the public can have a temporal span into the future when they view it only horizontally in terms of its size and deduce the political efficacy of writing on that account. The confusion of the public with citizens in general leads to the undermining of politics by the headline temporality of journalistic publics. Aspirations of some academics for the role of public intellectuals are faced with the fact that for the most part there are currently no conditions for public circulation between these spheres. As a possible counterweight, Warner recalls the approach of Michel Foucault, not merely as a reminder of how it relocated the limits of the political, but also in order to suggest how the path between intellectual work and politics could be bridged by the method of “problematization”: the development of a domain of acts and practices on the scene of a tentative counterpublic., Michael Warner, z angličtiny přeložil Radim Hladík., Tento překlad je kapitolou vybranou z díla Publics nad Counterpublics (Cambridge: Zone Books, 2002, str. 125-158, and Obsahuje bibliografii

- Studie recenzuje následující díla: Maurice HALBWACHS, Kolektivní paměť. Praha: SLON 2009, 289 s. (La mémoire collective, 1950, přeložili Yasar Abu Ghosh a kol.); Françoise MAYER, Češi a jejich komunismus: paměť a politická identita. Praha: Argo 2009, 273 s. Praha: SLON 2009, 289 pp. (La mémoire collective, 1950, translated by Yasar Abu Ghosh et al.); Françoise MAYER, Češi a jejich komunismus: paměť a politická identita. Praha: Argo 2009, 273 pp. (Lés Tchèques et leur communisme: Mémoire et identités politiques, 2003, translated by Helena Beguivinová); Zdeněk VAŠÍČEK - Françoise MAYER, Minulost a současnost, paměť a dějiny. [The Past and the Present, Memory and History.] Brno - Praha: CDK - Triáda 2008, 199 pp. The article affirms that a reasonable number of works have been published recently in Czech language, which should theoretically underpin a wider conception of memory studies. At the same time, these studies should not be subsumed under historiography, and above all, they should not employ solely the concepts of identity and social bonds, but also of power and conflict., and Radim Hladík.
