The paper presents the results of geodyn amic research in the fram e of the project COST 625 relating to active tectonic structures’ monitoring on the selected areas in Poland, Italy and Greece. Research was realised using a self-developed control and measurement system. The resu lts of researches for period 2000-2006 indi cate slight movements of observatio n points in the Sudety Mts. reaching several millimetres. However, the results confirm recent mobility of tectonic structures o f this area. Research realised in the Mediterranean Region objects - Gargano, Norcia (Italy) and Kaparelli (Greece) - indicate movements of observation points reaching over a dozen millimetres, particularly on the Gargano area. This paper contains the studies of the noise level in GPS (Global Positioning System) time series. As the data for this research the authors used changes of the geodetic coordinates of the ASG-EUPOS and associated (Slovak and Czech) sites. The method of precise GPS observations processing in short-time intervals was worked out in the Centre of Applied Geomatics, Military University of Technology. The authors focus on the diurnal and sub-diurnal frequency bands (tidal) as the tidal effects influence the sites’ positions at the most and the model used in the standard processing software does not contain geodetic coefficients. Thus the residual values of the geodetic coordinates time series should hold some information in the shape of coloured noise. The paper comprise short description of the Earth tides phenomenon, the concept of the tidal parameters determination, character of the white and coloured noise and the assessment of the noise estimation from GPS data. Presently the determination of the velocity field in the global reference frame is possible by using different space techniques and dense terrestrial networks from global to local and regional scales. However, the reliability of such determinations is strongly limited by the restricted number of unmodeled effects. Some of them are periodic (atmospheric or hydrological effects), some instantaneous (natural or man-made seismicity ) or seasons-related (snow cover, freezing). This elaboration deals with the unmodeled effects observed in the ASG-EUPOS (Polish Active Geodetic Network) time series. The whole network consists of over 130 permanent GNSS sites with different levels of stability. The paper presents the analysis of 3-year’s time-series of geodetic coordinates (in the topocentric projection) in order to obtain best-possible local velocity field. On the example of the Sudeten region, where 19 sites are located, the possible effects on the decrease in reliability of the velocity field determination are described. The GRID_STRAIN software that runs under the MATLAB® environment helped us in achieving the continuous strain field model. Unfortunately, the program averages the results. Therefore, the authors’ main goal of this paper was to work out a method of good verification of data to avoid falsifying of the results of strain calculations. We decided to use the method of the Delaunay triangulation to build a set of triangles of the data (EPN and ASG-EUPOS stations as the vertexes) and by the use of the velocities of each point and their errors, to estimate the single strain in each triangle. This approach made it possible to exclude the outlying values from the data. Selection of the criteria of the characteristic of insufficiently stable points in order to remove them from further computations is of a great importance for the final results of computations of the deformation field. In such a tectonically stable region, as the area of Poland, the strain values should not be higher than 3 to 4 nanostrains/year. At the low rate of tectonic deformations observed in Poland, the disturbances resulting from insufficient stabilization of the ASG-EUPOS network influence the computations of the deformation field to a significant extent. Improper stabilization of a single permanent station causes unification of the deformation field within 2 to 3 computation triangles having a common vertex at this station. Based on this assumption, nearly 30 of the ASG-EUPOS stations were excluded from further strain calculations. The analysis of the geodynamic consistency of the deformation field for the computation triangles is basis for indicating stations for which the dislocation resulting from insufficient stabilization, significantly exceeds the dislocation resulting from the deformation of the lithosphere. Most of the ASG-EUPOS network stations may be used for analysis of local differentiation of the deformation field in Poland., The regularities of the deformations distribution determined by ASG-EUPOS network stations constitute a new set of data which will be used for further geodynamic interpretation. The known models of recent vertical movements of the Earth crust surface in the area of Poland were processed in the form of contour line map on the basis of the data of the first and second class geometric state levelling network. Second map done by Wyrzykowski (1985) was based on the results of measurements made in 1871-1882, 1926-1937, 1952-1956 and 1975-1977. The newest results of assignment of recent vertical movements of the Earth surface in the territory of Poland were published by Kowalczyk in 2006. The map of the contemporary vertical movements velocities has been processed using the least squares collocation method on the basis of repeated measurements of state precise levelling, executed mainly in 1974-1982 and 1997-2003. Presently, after about 3 years of satellite observations at about one hundred of permanent GPS stations of the ASG-EUPOS network, a verification of the mentioned models is possible on the basis of independent (satellite) measurements. As the resolution of the stations in Poland is sufficient, the model processed using satellite data was determined for the whole area of Poland and it was confronted with earlier (levelling) models. A collaborative group between Greek, Polish, and Sl ovak colleagues installed a dense network of non-permanent GPS stations and extensometers to monitor active faults in the eastern part of the Gulf of Corinth, central Greece. The network includes eleven GPS stations across the Kaparelli fault and the Asopos rift valley to the east and two TM-71 extensometers that were installed on the Kaparelli fault plane. So far the G PS network has been measured in three campaigns within the last three years with very good accuracies (1-4 mm in the horizontal plane). Although it is early to draw conclusions on the velocity field and on strain patterns it can be noted that, the data from the extensometers demonstrate both fault-normal opening and shear motion. The paper presents results of epoch satellite GPS and gravimetric measurements performed on the geodynamic network in central part of the Stołowe Mts. between 1993 and 2009. The research results show significant changes of gravity on most of the points and significant horizontal movement of one point in the central part of the area. The results confirm present day activity of the zone where faults Polický, Bělský and Czerwona Woda Fault Zone exists. A reliability of site movement assessments determined from GPS data monitored during eight two-day epoch measurements on the regional geodynamic EAST SUDETEN network (the Bohemian Massif, Central Europe) is discussed in details. Statistical tests of site positions processed by the BERNESE GPS software, their linear approximations for site movement velocity assessments and an establishment of probabilistic thresholds for reliability of the GPS data for regional geodynamic studies are delivered. We analysed a nearly 133-km-long portion of the Sudetic Marginal Fault (SMF) in Poland (99.7 km) and the Czech Republic (33.8 km), comprised between Złotoryja in the NW and Jesenik in the SE. The fault trace has been subdivided into fifteen segments showing different orientation (N29°W to N56°W, and even N111°W SE of Złoty Stok), geological setting, length (8.8-22.9 km in Poland and 1.4-7.5 km in the Czech Republic), and height of the fault- and fault-line scarps (5-75 m to 200-360 m). Orientation of the entire fault trace approaches N41° W, and the mountain front sinuosity amounts to 1.051. Individual fault segments bear a flight of two to five tiers of triangular facets, showing differentiated state of preservation and degree of erosional remodelling. The highest triangular facets are confined to Rychlebské (Złote) and Sowie Mts. This tiering points to at least five episodes of uplift of the SMF footwall, starting shortly after 31 Ma, i.e. after basalts of the Sichów Hills area were displaced by the fault, and most probably postdating 7-5 Ma time interval, during which rapid cooling and exhumation of the Sowie Góry Mts. massif took place. Morphometric parameters of 244 small catchment areas of streams that dissect the fault scarp include, i.a. elongation, relief, and average slope of individual catchment areas, together with values of the valley flo or width to valley height ratios. The future of the global and local geodynamic researches belongs to permanent monitoring. The conception of the semipermanent GPS observations’ application in geodynamic research in Sudetes area is presented in this paper. The conception is based on spatial modeling of the disturbing phenomena in the coordinate time series of (semi) permanent stations. The local interplate movements and their correlation with major European tectonic structures are determined on the strength of coordinate time series of these stations.
