Polární záře jsou konečným důsledkem řetězce událostí souvisících se sluneční aktivitou. Nabité částice se od Slunce šíří jako součást slunečního větru meziplanetárním prostorem. Malá část z nich je zachycena magnetosférami planet a některé z nich magnetosférou naší Země. Zejména elektrony pak interagují s horními vrstvami atmosféry a excitované atomy či molekuly kyslíku a dusíku způsobují při deexcitaci překrásné nebeské divadlo - polární záři. V článku jsou vysvětleny makroskopické a mikroskopické mechanismy vzniku polárních září včetně historie jejich výzkumu. Stručně jsou shrnuty výsledky expedice Aurora 2002 pořádané katedrou fyziky FEL ČVUT a sdružením Aldebaran Group for Astrophysics. Mikrovlnné fotony zachycené v supravodivé dutině jsou ideálním systémem, na němž lze realizovat některé myšlenkové experimenty zakladatelů kvantové teorie. Na interakci takto zachycených fotonů s Rydbergovými atomy letícími napříč dutinou lze demonstrovat základní vlastnosti teorie měření. Experimenty s touto dutinou byly prováděny na univerzitě École normale supérieure (ENS). Patří do oblasti kvantové optiky, která se nazývá "kvantová elektrodynamika durin" (Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics). Podařilo se nám nedestruktivně měřit počet fotonů, zaznamenat kvantové skoky pole, připravit a rekonstruovat stavy záření obdobné stavům Schrödingerovy kočky a studovat jejich dekoherenci - vynikající ukázku přechodu od kvantového ke klasickému světu. Experimenty také ukázaly základní kroky potřebné ke zpracování kvantové informace včetně deterministického provázání atomů a realizace kvantových hradel z kvantových bitů (qubitů) tvořených atomy a fotony. Na počátku přednášky se budu věnovat souvislostem mezi naší fotonovou dutinou a iontovou pastí využívanou při experimentech Davida Winelanda, který vás seznámí se svým příspěvkem k manipulaci s jednotlivými částicemi ve své vlastní doprovodné přednášce. Poté bych se chtěl věnovat mému osobnímu pohledu na počátky kvantové elektrodynamiky dutin, popíšu experimenty, které jsme posledních dvacet let prováděli v ENS, a na závěr bych rád porovnal naši práci s dalšími výzkumy, které se týkaly manipulace s jednotlivými kvantovými částicemi., Microwave photons trapped in a superconducting cavity constitute an ideal system to realize some of the thought experiments imagined by the founding fathers of quantum physics. The interaction of these trapped photons with Rydberg atoms crossing the cavity illustrates fundamental aspects of measurement theory. The experiments performed with this "photon box" at Ecole Normale Supérieure (ENS) belong to the domain of quantum optics called "cavity quantum electrodynamics". We have realized the nondestructive counting of photons, the recording of field quantum jumps, the preparation and reconstruction of "Schrödinger cat" states of radiation and the study of their decoherence, which provides a striking illustration of the transition from the quantum to the classical world. These experiments have also led to the demonstration of basic steps in quantum information processing, including the deterministic entanglement of atoms and the realization if quantum gates using atoms and photons as quantum bits. This lecture starts by an introduction stressing the connection between the ENS photon box and the ion-trap experiments of David Wineland, whose accompanying lecture recalls his own contribution to the field of single particle control. I give then a personal account of the early days of cavity quantum electrodynamics before describing the main experiments performed at ENS during the last 20 years and concluding by a discussion comparing our work to other researches dealing with the control of single quantum particles., Serge Haroche ; přeložil Petr Kulhánek., and Obsahuje bibliografii

Under normal conditions, electrons are accelerated by electric fields and decelerated by collision processes. After some time, a stable equilibrium between these two processes is achieved and electrons drift with constant speed against the field direction. Such a scheme is called the ohmic regime. At higher speeds or electric fields, the situation may be completely different. Collisions may not be able to compensate for electron acceleration and electrons attain the so called runaway mode.
