The paper approaches problem of the flow forecasting for the Liptovska Mara reservoir with a hybrid modelling approach. The nonlinear hybrid modelling framework was investigated under the specific physiographic conditions of the High Core Mountains of Slovakia. The mean monthly flows of rivers used in this study are predominantly fed by snowmelt in the spring and convective precipitation in the summer. Therefore, their hydrological regime exhibits at least two clear seasonal patterns, which provide an intuitive justification for the application of nonlinear regime-switching time series models. Differences in the prevailing geology, orientation of slopes and their exposure to atmospheric circulation for the right and left-sided tributaries of the Vah River indicate that the hydrological regime of mean monthly discharge time series in this area with respect to seasonality and cyclicity may differ, too. Therefore, a simple deterministic water balance scheme was set up for estimating the reservoir inflow from the left and right-sided tributary flows separately. It consists of the linear combination of the measured tributary flows and estimated ungauged tributary flows. The contributions of the ungauged catchments were estimated from flows from gauged tributaries with similar physiographic conditions by weighting these by the ratio of the catchment areas. Separate nonlinear regime-switching time series models were identified for each gauged tributary. The forecasts of the tributaries were combined into a hybrid forecasting model by the water balance model. The performance of the combined forecast, which could better include the specific regime of the time series of tributaries, was compared with the single forecast of the overall reservoir inflow in several combinations. and V štúdii sme porovnávali kvalitu predpovede viacerých lineárnych a nelineárnych modelov časových radov pri predpovedaní prítokov do nádrže Liptovská Mara. Testovali sme výkonnosť modelov ARMA, SETAR na samotnej rieke Váh a v kombinácii jej prítokov do nádrže Liptovská Mara. Ďalej bol uplatnený jednoduchý deterministický model vodnej bilancie pre prítok do nádrže, ktorý pozostáva z lineárnej kombinácie meraných prietokov prítokov Váhu vážených plochou subpovodia. Výber analogónov sa vykonal vzhľadom na podobnosť fyzicko-geografických podmienok v meraných a nemeraných subpovodiach. Modely typu ARMA a SETAR boli zostavené pre každý prítok osobitne a predpovede prietokov na prítokoch boli skombinované modelom vodnej bilancie a do predpovede celkového prítoku do nádrže. Kombinovanú hybridnú predpoveď (stochasticko-deterministická), zachovávajúcu špecifický režim prítokov a vodnej bilancie v povodiach, sme porovnali s predpoveďou celkového prítoku do nádrže získanou pomocou modelov identifikovaných na hlavnom toku.
This paper analyses the bivariate relationship between flood peaks and corresponding flood event volumes modelled by empirical and theoretical copulas in a regional context, with a focus on flood generation processes in general, the regional differentiation of these and the effect of the sample size on reliable discrimination among models. A total of 72 catchments in North-West of Austria are analysed for the period 1976-2007. From the hourly runoff data set, 25 697 flood events were isolated and assigned to one of three flood process types: synoptic floods (including long- and short-rain floods), flash floods or snowmelt floods (both rain-on-snow and snowmelt floods). The first step of the analysis examines whether the empirical peak-volume copulas of different flood process types are regionally statistically distinguishable, separately for each catchment and the role of the sample size on the strength of the statements. The results indicate that the empirical copulas of flash floods tend to be different from those of the synoptic and snowmelt floods. The second step examines how similar are the empirical flood peak-volume copulas between catchments for a given flood type across the region. Empirical copulas of synoptic floods are the least similar between the catchments, however with the decrease of the sample size the difference between the performances of the process types becomes small. The third step examines the goodness-of-fit of different commonly used copula types to the data samples that represent the annual maxima of flood peaks and the respective volumes both regardless of flood generating processes (the traditional engineering approach) and also considering the three process-based classes. Extreme value copulas (Galambos, Gumbel and Hüsler-Reiss) show the best performance both for synoptic and flash floods, while the Frank copula shows the best performance for snowmelt floods. It is concluded that there is merit in treating flood types separately when analysing and estimating flood peak-volume dependence copulas; however, even the enlarged dataset gained by the process-based analysis in this study does not give sufficient information for a reliable model choice for multivariate statistical analysis of flood peaks and volumes.
This study examines two long-term time series of nitrate-nitrogen concentrations from the River Ouse and Stour situated in the Eastern England. The time series of monthly averages were decomposed into trend, seasonal and cyclical components and residuals to create a simple additive model. Residuals were then modelled by linear time series models represented by models of the ARMA (autoregressive moving average) class and nonlinear time series models with multiple regimes represented by SETAR (self-exciting threshold autoregressive) and MSW (Markov switching) models. The analysis showed that, based on the minimal value of residual sum of squares (RSS) of one-step ahead forecast in both datasets, SETAR and MSW models described the time series better than models ARMA. However, the relative improvement of SETAR models against ARMA models was low ranging between 1% and 4% with the exception of the three-regime model for the River Stour where the improvement was 48.9%. In comparison, the relative improvement of MSW models was between 44.6% and 52.5 for two-regime and from 60.4% to 75% for three-regime models. However, the visual assessment of models plotted against original datasets showed that despite a high value of RSS, some ARMA models could describe the analyzed time series better than AR (autoregressive), MA (moving average) and SETAR models with lower values of RSS. In both datasets MSW models provided a very good visual fit describing most of the extreme values. The results of this work could be used as a base for construction of other time series models used to describe or predict nitratenitrogen concentrations. and Štúdia sa zaoberá analýzou dlhých časových radov koncentrácií dusičnanového dusíka v rieke Ouse a Stour vo Východnom Anglicku. Časové rady priemerných mesačných koncentrácií dusičnanov boli rozložené na trendovú, sezónnu a cyklickú zložku a reziduá pripočítané k sebe a tvoriace jednoduchý aditívny model. Reziduá boli ďalej modelované zložitejšími lineárnymi modelmi reprezentovanými modelmi triedy ARMA a nelineárnymi viacrežimovými modelmi SETAR a MSW. Výsledky analýzy ukázali, že na základe minimálnej hodnoty sumy štvorcov reziduí (SSR) jednokrokovej predpovede, v oboch prípadoch SETAR aj MSW modely opísali časové rady lepšie ako modely triedy ARMA. Vo väčšine prípadov relatívne zlepšenie modelov SETAR oproti jednoduchým AR(1) modelom bolo malé v rozmedzí od 1 do 4 % s výnimkou trojrežimového modelu pre rieku Stour, kde to bolo až 48,9 %. Naopak, relatívne zlepšenie modelov MSW oproti AR(1) modelom bolo v rozmedzí 44,6 až 52,5 % pre dvojrežimové a 60,4 až 75 % pre trojrežimové modely. Vizuálne posúdenie jednotlivých modelov však ukázalo, že napriek vysokým hodnotám SSR, niektoré ARMA modely dokázali lepšie opísať dané časové rady ako modely AR, MA a SETAR s nižšími hodnotami SSR. V oboch prípadoch MSW modely dokázali dostatočne dobre opísať aj extrémne hodnoty oboch časových radov. Výsledky práce môžu byť použité pri tvorbe iných opisných alebo predpovedných modelov koncentrácie dusičnanového dusíka vo vodách.
Real time prediction of return periods of flood events that might occur in the course of anticipated dangerous meteorological situations at a catchment could be useful as additional information for decision makers involved in flood warning. Such a method is proposed in the paper for the Torysa basin in the western part of East Slovakia for rainfall-induced floods. A conceptual rainfall-runoff model with a daily time step was adopted for modelling of the runoff. The study of the relationship between the modelled basin’s soil moisture index at the beginning of the annual maximum floods and the flood-causing precipitation totals showed no dependence between these two quantities. Based on that finding, several scenarios involving the independent joint occurrence of synthetic extreme precipitation and antecedent basin saturation indexes were constructed. Using event-based flood simulations, synthetic flood waves were generated for these scenarios with the rainfall-runoff model. The relationships between the return periods of the synthetic precipitation and the return periods of the simulated floods were analysed, and the effect of antecedent basin saturation index on the extremity of the floods was quantified. Critical values of the basin saturation index leading to floods with higher return periods than the return period of flood-causing precipitation were suggested. A simple method of implementing such critical values into real time flood risk warnings in a hydrological forecasting and warning system in the Torysa basin was outlined. and Predpovedanie N-ročnosti povodní v reálnom čase pri výskyte kritických meteorologických situácií na povodiach je dôležité ako dodatočná informácia z hľadiska rozhodovacieho procesu v protipovodňovom varovnom systéme a následných opatreniach na povodiach. Táto štúdia bola preto zameraná na posudzovanie vzájomného pôsobenia extrémnych príčinných tekutých zrážok a rôznych stavov predchádzajúceho nasýtenia na pilotnom povodí Torysy po Prešov. Pre modelovanie odtoku na povodí bol použitý koncepčný zrážkovo-odtokový model s denným krokom. Pri výbere počiatočných podmienok vzniku povodní sme posudzovali rôzne stavy nasýtenia povodia pred vznikom najväčších ročných povodní, ktoré sa vyskytli na uvedenom povodí v minulosti. Na základe kombinácií modelových extrémnych príčinných zrážok s rôznymi stavmi predchádzajúceho nasýtenia povodia sme hydrologickým modelovaním simulovali odtok z povodia. Analyzoval sa vzťah medzi dobou opakovania modelových zrážok a simulovaných povodní a následne sa kvantifikoval vplyv predchádzajúceho nasýtenia povodia na extremitu odtoku. Určili sa kritické hodnoty nasýtenia povodia, kedy doba opakovania povodní prevyšuje hodnotu doby opakovania príčinných zrážok. Záverom bola navrhnutá jednoduchá metóda implementácie týchto kritických hodnôt pri predpovedaní povodní v reálnom čase na povodí Torysy.
Recently hydrological mapping have gained renewed interest in connection with climate-change impact studies, determination of water budgets at different temporal and spatial scales and the validation of atmospheric simulation models and hydrological models. Grids maps are often chosen for the representation of the spatial distribution of diverse physiographic and hydrologic information. This study focuses on the spatial estimation of the long-term mean annual actual (ET) and potential (EP) evapotranspiration in mountainous basins in Central Slovakia. Three methods used for EP and ET estimations are compared in a mapping framework: the modified empirical Turc model, the energy based SOLEI model and continuous water balance simulation using WASIM model. The spatial variability and consistency of EP and ET estimated by the different methods is evaluated and the performance of resulting ET grid maps is compared with the observed long-term water balance in three Hron river basins: river Hron to Bystra, Hron to Brezno and Hron to Banska Bystrica profiles. and Mapovanie prvkov hydrologickej bilancie má čoraz väčšie uplatnenie pri modelovaní priestorových zmien jednotlivých hydrologických prvkov, na určenie komponentov hydrologickej bilancie vybraných území, pri overovaní platnosti údajov pre rôzne atmosférické a hydrologické modely, ale aj pri štúdiách spojených s posudzovaním dôsledkov možnej zmeny klímy na hydrologický cyklus. Táto práca je venovaná možnostiam mapovania dlhodobého priemerného ročného aktuálneho (ET) a potenciálneho výparu (EP) s využitím rastrovej (štvorcovej) formy vyjadrenia ich priestorovej variability. Na konštrukciu máp EP a ET boli použité tri rôzne metódy: empirický model Turca, energeticky založený model SOLEI a model hydrologickej bilancie WaSiM. Výsledkom práce bolo zhodnotenie priestorovej variability a vzájomnej konzistencie rôznych metód aplikovaných na mapovanie EP a ET a porovnanie ich presnosti voči meraným dlhodobým prvkom hydrologickej bilancie v troch povodiach - povodí Bystrej, povodí Hrona po profil Brezno a po profil Banská Bystrica.
Regional frequency analysis of heavy precipitation amounts based on the estimation of the parameters of a regional distribution function using L-moments is adopted for the specific geographical-climatological settings of Slovakia. The paper focuses on the first step of the regional L-moment algorithm (Hosking, Wallis, 1997), which is the delineation of homogeneous regions. Objective and process-based logical pooling techniques are used to form homogeneous pooling groups of rainfall gauging stations for regional frequency analysis of k-day precipitation amounts (k = 1 to 5 days). Even though the delineation of homogeneous regions by means of objective methods is generally accepted and recommended in the literature, it is concluded here that such a pooling of similar sites should not be carried out automatically in precipitation analysis. Instead, a combination of physical/geomorphological considerations and objective methods should be preferred. and Článok sa zaoberá regionálnou frekvenčnou analýzou mimoriadnych úhrnov zrážok, ktorá je založená na odhade parametrov regionálneho rozdelenia pravdepodobnosti pomocou L-momentov a ktorá sa aplikuje v špecifických geograficko-klimatických podmienkach Slovenska. Článok je užšie zameraný na prvý krok tzv. regionálneho L-momentového algoritmu (Hosking, Wallis, 1997), ktorým je vyčlenenie homogénnych regiónov pre k-denné úhrny zrážok (k = 1 až 5). Na formovanie homogénnych zoskupení klimatologických a zrážkomerných staníc sa použila objektívna aj subjektívna (logická) metodika. Napriek tomu, že odborná literatúra všeobecne uznáva a odporúča použiť objektívne postupy na vyčlenenie homogénnych regiónov, v štúdii sme usúdili, že by sa vo frekvenčnej analýze úhrnov zrážok navzájom podobné stanice nemali vyčleňovať automaticky. Namiesto toho odporúčame, aby sa k tomuto účelu použila kombinácia objektívnych postupov, resp. úvah založených na fyzicko-geografických charakteristikách krajiny
Flood frequency analysis is usually performed as a univariate analysis of flood peaks using a suitable theoretical probability distribution of the annual maximum flood peaks or peak over threshold values. However, other flood attributes, such as flood volume and duration, are necessary for the design of hydrotechnical projects, too. In this study, the suitability of various copula families for a bivariate analysis of peak discharges and flood volumes has been tested. Streamflow data from selected gauging stations along the whole Danube River have been used. Kendall’s rank correlation coefficient (tau) quantifies the dependence between flood peak discharge and flood volume settings. The methodology is applied to two different data samples: 1) annual maximum flood (AMF) peaks combined with annual maximum flow volumes of fixed durations at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 60 days, respectively (which can be regarded as a regime analysis of the dependence between the extremes of both variables in a given year), and 2) annual maximum flood (AMF) peaks with corresponding flood volumes (which is a typical choice for engineering studies). The bivariate modelling of the extracted peak discharge - flood volume couples is achieved with the use of the Ali-Mikhail-Haq (AMH), Clayton, Frank, Joe, Gumbel, Hüsler-Reiss, Galambos, Tawn, Normal, Plackett and FGM copula families. Scatterplots of the observed and simulated peak discharge - flood volume pairs and goodness-of-fit tests have been used to assess the overall applicability of the copulas as well as observing any changes in suitable models along the Danube River. The results indicate that for the second data sampling method, almost all of the considered Archimedean class copula families perform better than the other copula families selected for this study, and that for the first method, only the upper-tail-flat copulas excel (except for the AMH copula due to its inability to model stronger relationships).
In the paper a methodology for estimating monthly potential evapotranspiration (E0) as an input for hydrological balance modelling in the upper Hron River basin was developed. Four different methods were used to calculate monthly potential evapotranspiration in 6 climate stations in the basin - the Tomlain method based on equations of energy balance, the FAO method based on equations of radiation balance and empirical parameters, and 2 empirical methods - the Thornthwaite and Ivanov methods. Because of the relatively different results of E0 values estimated by these 4 methods, the physically based Tomlain method was considered as a reference method. Other methods containing empirical parameters were calibrated to estimate E0 with the best agreement to the Tomlain method. Calibration was done for each method and individual climate station, as well as for the whole region and was aimed to find a regional set of parameters for methods of E0 calculation. The method of genetic algorithm was used for the calibration. The efficiency of E0 computed by each of the calibrated methods was compared with the Tomlain method and the results were used for modelling of the hydrological balance in the basin. and Článok opisuje metodiku určovania mesačnej potenciálnej evapotranspirácie (E0) na povodí horného Hrona ako vstupu do hydrologického bilančného modelu s mesačným časovým krokom. Mesačná potenciálna evapotranspirácia je v modeli určovaná jednou zo 4 vybraných metód - metódou založenou na riešení energetickej bilancie, rozpracovanou Tomlainom, FAO metódou založenou na riešení radiačnej bilancie a 2 empirickými metódami výpočtu podľa Ivanova a Thornthwaitea. Podľa uvedených metód bol urobený výpočet E0 v 6 klimatických staniciach na povodí horného Hrona. Pretože metóda výpočtu podľa Tomlaina je založená na riešení rovníc energetickej bilancie, výsledky výpočtu E0 podľa nej boli ďalej považované za referenčné. Ostatné použité metódy, obsahujúce aj rovnice s empirickými parametrami boli kalibrované tak, aby výsledky výpočtu E0 týmito metódami boli v čo najlepšej zhode s výsledkami výpočtu E0 podľa Tomlainovej metódy. Kalibrácia metód na výpočet E0 bola urobená pre každú metódu a stanicu zvlášť. Následne boli pre každú metódu súbežnou kalibráciou vo všetkých staniciach určené regionálne parametre týchto metód, vhodné pre celé povodie. Pri kalibrácii parametrov boli využité metódy genetického algoritmu, ako objektívna funkcia bol použitý Nash-Sutcliffe koeficient. Výsledky výpočtu E0 sú v článku porovnané a využité na modelovanie priemerných mesačných prietokov v záverečnom profile povodia.
The discrete state space representation of the cascade of linear reservoirs model was used in this case study as the basis for a multilinear flood routing model. The time distribution scheme of model inputs was employed in the setup of the multilinear model and the travel-time parameter of the model was allowed to vary with discharge. The relationship between the flood wave-speed and the discharge for a reach of the Morava River between Moravský Svätý Ján and Záhorská Ves was studied. Five empirical models of that relation have been considered that would fit the data and would be consistent with the physical interpretation of the factors determining the relation. Empirical relations between the wave-speed and discharge were derived for the given river reach using engineering reasoning, linear and nonlinear regression and artificial neural networks. These relationships were used to model the variability of the time parameter in the discrete linear cascade flow routing model. The performance of the multilinear model was verified on ten flood waves. The modelling results showed that the inclusion of empirical information on the variability of the wave-speed with discharge enables satisfactory accuracy of the prediction of the flood propagation process without needing to calibrate the model on pairs of input-output hydrographs. The problem of choosing an appropriate wave-speed discharge relationship was briefly discussed. and Jednou z možností riešenia transformácie povodňových vĺn v korytách tokov je používanie multilineárnych modelov, teda niekoľkých lineárnych modelov odpovedajúcich rôznym odtokovým situáciám. Cieľom prípadovej štúdie bolo preveriť parametrizáciu takejto schémy zohľadňujúcu zmenu postupovej doby vrcholov prietokových vĺn v závislosti na prietoku z hľadiska jeho aplikovateľnosti v podmienkach aluviálneho riečneho úseku s bočnými prítokmi. Za základ zavedenia multilinearity sme zvolili model kaskády lineárnych nádrží, ktorý sme formulovali v stavovom priestore. Použili sme schému tzv. časového delenia vstupov do multilineárneho modelu, pri ktorom sa na výpočte podieľajú rôzne lineárne submodely striedavo za sebou v sérii. Experimentálne sme overili niekoľko spôsobov odhadu závislosti postupovej rýchlosti vrcholov povodňových vĺn od vstupného prietoku do riečneho úseku na rieke Morava medzi profilmi Moravský Svätý Ján a Záhorská Ves. Odvodené závislosti sme použili na výpočet časového parametra multilineárneho modelu, ktorý sme verifikovali na desiatich prietokových vlnách. Výhodou riešenia s premenlivým časovým parametrom kaskády lineárnych nádrží je, že model lepšie napodobňuje vlastnosti riečneho úseku ako lineárny model s parametrami získanými kalibráciou modelu na rade povodňových vĺn, ktorá sa tak stáva prebytočnou.

The modelling results showed that the inclusion of empirical information on the variability of the travel-time with discharge enables satisfactory accuracy of the prediction of the flood propagation process without needing to calibrate the model on pairs of input-output hydrographs. The choice of an appropriate travel-time discharge relationship was briefly discussed. and Jednou z možností riešenia transformácie povodňových vĺn v korytách tokov je používanie multilineárnych modelov, teda niekoľkých lineárnych modelov odpovedajúcich rôznym odtokovým situáciám. Cieľom štúdie bolo preveriť parametrizáciu takejto schémy zohľadňujúcu zmenu postupovej doby vrcholov prietokových vĺn v závislosti na prietoku z hľadiska jeho aplikovateľnosti v podmienkach horského toku s premenlivým bočným prítokom. Za základ zavedenia multilinearity sme zvolili model Kalinina a Miljukova, ktorý sme formulovali v stavovom priestore. Použili sme schému tzv. časového delenia vstupov do multilineárneho modelu, pri ktorom sa na výpočte podieľajú rôzne lineárne submodely striedavo za sebou v sérii. Vzhľadom na silný nemeraný bočný prítok viazali sme premenlivosť koeficienta k modelu na výstupný prietok riečneho úseku (na rozdiel od predošlých prác, kde sme použili vstup do riečneho úseku). Experimentálne sme overili niekoľko spôsobov odhadu tohto parametra pre transformáciu prietoku na Hrone medzi Breznom a Banskou Bystricou. Použili sme postupové doby odhadnuté z 28 historických prietokových vĺn a priemerné hodinové prietoky z Brezna, Mýta, Hronca a Banskej Bystrice z obdobia 1998 až 2002. Výhodou riešenia s pohyblivou postupovou dobou sa ukázalo, že jeden parameter modelu je odvodený z vlastností vstupno-výstupného správania sa riečneho úseku a priama kalibrácia modelu sa tak stáva prebytočnou.
The aim of this study was to test the applicability of a simple scaling methodology for a regional estimation of intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) curves in Slovakia. The analysis is based on the regionalization process of Gaál (2006), which focused on the delineation of homogeneous regions for a regional frequency analysis of precipitation maxima. In order to examine the regionally estimated IDF curves, a region covering the western parts of Slovakia was chosen. The selected region, which encompasses 19 raingauging stations, may be characterized by the dominant influence of Atlantic circulation patterns. Three of the 19 stations belonging to the target region were set aside and flagged as verification stations. The regional dimensionless growth curve of 1-day precipitation maxima in the warm season was derived for the region, and the local T-year quantiles were estimated by the index value method for the stations. At the same time, a regionally averaged scaling exponent was derived using all the stations except for the three verification ones. The local IDF curves at the verification stations were estimated by downscaling the Tyear quantiles of the 1-day precipitation maxima using the regionally averaged scaling exponent. Finally, the IDF curves for these stations were compared with those defined by Šamaj, Valovič (1973). This study is the first step in assessing the applicability of a simple scaling theory for the regional estimation of IDF curves in Slovakia. and Cieľom tejto práce bolo otestovať možnosť použitia metódy jednoduchého škálovania zrážok pri regionálnom odhade návrhových hodnôt zrážkových intenzít na Slovensku. Pre analýzu bolo vybraných 19 zrážkomerných staníc vo vopred vyčlenenom regióne na území západného Slovenska, pričom tri stanice boli separované ako verifikačné stanice. Pre vybraný región sme odvodili bezrozmernú regionálnu čiaru prekročenia jednodenných maximálnych úhrnov zrážok v teplom polroku a následne sme pre verifikačné stanice metódou indexovej hodnoty odhadli lokálne návrhové hodnoty pre rôzne významné doby opakovania T (tzv. T-ročné kvantily). Vo vyčlenenom regióne sme určili priemerný regionálny škálovací koeficient. Návrhové zrážkové intenzity pre tri verifikačné stanice sa stanovili zoškálovaním T-ročných kvantilov jednodenných maximálnych zrážok pomocou regionálneho škálovacieho koeficientu. Určené návrhové hodnoty sme porovnali s výsledkami Šamaja, Valoviča (1973). Štúdia potvrdila možnosť využitia metódy jednoduchého škálovania na regionálny odhad návrhových hodnôt zrážkových intenzít na Slovensku.
The necessity to generate time series of runoff for planning and design purposes and environmental protection at ungauged sites is often the case in water resources studies. As in the case of the absence of measured runoff optimisation techniques cannot be used to estimate the parameters of rainfall-runoff models, regional estimation methods are used instead. In previous studies usually regression methods were used for relating the model parameters to the catchment characteristics in a given region. In the paper a different method for the regional calibration of a monthly water balance model is proposed for the case of sparse runoff data. Instead of using the regional regression, the method involves the regional calibration of a monthly water balance model to several gauged catchments in a given region simultaneously. These catchments were pooled together using cluster analysis of selected basin physiographic properties. For the model calibration a genetic programming algorithm was employed and two problem specific fitness functions were proposed. It is expected, that the regionally calibrated model parameters can be used in ungauged basins with similar physiographic conditions. The performance of such a regional calibration scheme was compared with two single site calibration methods in the Záhorie region of West Slovakia. and Článok sa zaoberá možnosťami využitia hydrologického modelovania pre účely určovania prietokov v povodiach bez ich pozorovaní. V takýchto prípadoch nemožno určiť parametre modelu klasickou kalibráciou, pri ktorej sa pri hľadaní parametrov modelu posudzuje čo najlepšia zhoda medzi simulovanými a pozorovanými prietokmi. Jednou z možností je zisťovanie parametrov modelu na základe posudzovania ich vzájomného vzťahu s hydrologickými, topografickými alebo fyzicko-geografickými vlastnosťami povodí, ktoré zohrávajú pri tvorbe odtoku dominantnú úlohu, ďalšia možnosť je určenie jednotných parametrov modelu kalibráciou modelu pre skupinu povodí (región alebo regionálny typ), vyčlenenú na základe podobných vlastností ovplyvňujúcich tvorbu odtoku. V článku je aplikovaná metodika určovania regionálnych parametrov hydrologického bilančného modelu v mesačnom časovom kroku na vybraných povodiach západného Slovenska. Namiesto prístupu regionálnej regresie je tu využitý spôsob regionálnej kalibrácie modelu pre regióny vyčlenené na základe podobnosti rôznych fyzicko-geografických vlastností. Pri regionálnej kalibrácii modelu boli využité metódy genetického algoritmu, pričom boli testované dve objektívne funkcie. Výsledky regionálnej kalibrácie sú porovnané s výsledkami kalibrácie modelu pre jednotlivé povodia. Regionálne určené parametre modelu môžu byť využité na modelovanie priemerných mesačných prietokov v povodiach bez pozorovaní, patriacich do príslušného regiónu alebo regionálneho typu.
Regional design flood computation formulae in Slovakia were traditionally based on the regionalisation of the 100-year flood discharge. Floods with shorter return periods have usually been computed by regional frequency factors from the 100-year flood discharge. Several previous studies have indicated that a rather high safety factor is included in some of the traditional regional formulae. In this paper therefore an alternative method for the determination of the flood frequency curve in ungauged catchments in the high core mountain region of Slovakia has been investigated. Floods from rainfall and snowmelt were treated separately; the study was focused on summer floods. For the division catchments into pooling groups subjective and objective methods e.g. cluster analysis were used. The methodology was based on the regional estimation of the index flood and its standard deviation from catchment characteristics. Flood quantiles were determined from a two-parameter distribution. The performance of several regional methods was compared and the applicability of the tested methods for various hydraulic and hydro-ecological design tasks was also discussed. and Odhad N-ročných maximálnych prietokov bol na Slovensku tradične založený na regionalizácii maximálnych storočných prietokov. V príspevku sme preto navrhli a testovali alternatívne regionálne metódy nepriameho odhadu štatistických charakteristík maximálnych prietokov v letnej sezóne v oblasti Tatier. Skúmali sme viaceré možnosti rozdeliť tento región na oblasti s rovnakým vzťahom medzi podmieňujúcimi činiteľmi tvorby odtoku a priemernou hodnotou a smerodajnou odchýlkou maximálnych letných prietokov. Subregióny boli konštruované použitím subjektívnych úvah, logickým delením, ako aj pomocou objektívnych metód využívajúc princípy zhlukovej analýzy. Regionálne vzťahy na určovanie charakteristík maximálnych letných prietokov boli odvodené použitím viacnásobnej regresie. V závere sme porovnali hodnoty N-ročných maximálnych letných prietokov určené použitím viacerých metód a diskutovali sme vhodnosť použitia aplikovaných postupov pre inžiniersku prax.
In this paper a comparison of methods for estimating rainfall-runoff model parameters in ungauged basins based on geographical location are presented. As a pilot basin the Hron River basin in Slovakia with an available daily flow, precipitation and air temperature time series needed for calibration to obtain model parameter values in subcatchments was selected. The rainfall-runoff model was calibrated using a daily time step at 23 subcatchments. The Nearest Neighbour, Lumped Basin and Best Similarity Index methods were used to transfer the model parameters from the gauged to ''ungauged'' subcatchments. Finally, the effectiveness of the estimation method for ungauged basins was tested by comparing the model simulations to observed hydrographs and computing the Nash-Sutcliffe optimization criterion. The results were finally compared, and the best method was recommended for practical application by estimating of the rainfallrunoff model parameters in an ungauged catchment in this region. and V štúdii sú prezentované výsledky nepriamych metód odhadu parametrov zrážkovo-odtokového modelu na povodiach bez priamych hydrologických pozorovaní, ktoré sú založené na geografickej polohe povodí. Povodie Hrona bolo vybrané ako pilotný región s 23 čiastkovými povodiami, ktoré mali dostupné časové rady pozorovaní priemerných denných prietokov, zrážok a teploty vzduchu, potrebné na kalibráciu modelu. Zrážkovo-odtokový model bol v týchto podpovodiach nakalibrovaný na údajoch s denným časovým krokom. Následne boli použité na regionalizáciu parametrov modelu metódy Nearest Neighbour (Metóda najbližšieho suseda), Lumped Basin (Metóda sústredeného povodia) a Best Similarity Index methods (Metóda najlepšej podobnosti). Kvalita regionalizačných metód sa overovala pomocou optimalizačného kritéria Nash-Sutcliffe. Najlepšie výsledky boli dosiahnuté Metódou najlepšej podobnosti, ktorá môže byť v praxi odporúčaná na odhad parametrov zrážkovo-odtokového modelu na testovanom povodí.
In this paper hydrological scenarios of changes in the long-term mean annual and the mean monthly runoff due to the climate change in the upper part of the Hron River basin were evaluated. The Hron river basin was selected as a representative mountainous basin in Central Slovakia. An empirical raster-based and a conceptual hydrological balance model were used for modelling changes in runoff with an annual and monthly time step. Both models were calibrated using data from a standard period 1951-1980, which is considered to be representative for the distribution of runoff in unchanged conditions. Four different climate change scenarios were used in the study. Two scenarios were downscaled from the outputs of the CCCM and GISS Global Circulation Models (GCMs), the others represent analogies with warmer climatic periods in the past. The runoff change scenarios developed for the upper Hron River basin for future time horizons 2010, 2030 and 2075 show the decrease in the long-term mean annual runoff and changes in the runoff distribution within the year. and V článku sú odvodené scenáre zmien dlhodobých priemerných ročných a priemerných mesačných prietokov, vyjadrujúce možný vplyv zmeny klímy na odtok v budúcnosti na povodí horného Hrona. Na modelovanie dlhodobých priemerných ročných prietokov bol použitý rastrovo-orientovaný empirický model hydrologickej bilancie, na modelovanie priemerných mesačných prietokov bol použitý koncepčný hydrologický bilančný model so sústredenými parametrami. Obidva modely boli kalibrované na údajoch z obdobia 1951-1980, ktoré sme považovali za reprezentatívne obdobie pre nezmenené podmienky hydrologického režimu. Ako scenáre zmeny klímy boli použité scenáre CCCM a GISS, regionalizované z najnovších výstupov globálnych cirkulačných modelov atmosféry, a scenáre SD a WP, vyvinuté v rámci Národného klimatického programu SR na základe analógie s teplými obdobiami v minulosti u nás. Scenáre zmeny odtoku, odvodené pre časové horizonty 2010, 2030 a 2075 ukazujú možný pokles dlhodobých priemerných ročných prietokov, ako aj zmenu priemerných mesačných prietokov na povodí horného Hrona v budúcnosti.
The potential impact of climate change on the mean monthly runoff in the upper Hron River basin, which was chosen as a representative mountainous region in Central Slovakia, was evaluated. A conceptual hydrological balance model calibrated with data from the period 1971-2000 was used for modelling changes in runoff with monthly time steps. Changes in climate variables in the future were expressed by two different climate change scenarios developed within the framework of the CECILIA (Central and Eastern Europe Climate Change Impact and Vulnerability Assessment) project. The climate change scenarios were constructed using the pattern scaling method from the outputs of transient simulations made by 2 GCMs - ECHAM4/OPYC3 and HadCM2 (Dubrovský et al., 2005). The runoff change scenarios for the selected basin in the future time horizons of 2025, 2050 and 2100 show changes in the runoff distribution within a year. Changes in the seasonal runoff distribution were compared with previous results (Danihlík et al., 2004), which were achieved with climate change scenarios developed from the outputs of the CCCM97 and GISS98 global circulation models. and Článok sa zaoberá skúmaním vplyvu možnej zmeny klímy na sezónne rozdelenie odtoku na povodí horného Hrona. Na modelovanie priemerných mesačných prietokov bol použitý koncepčný model hydrologickej bilancie v mesačnom kroku, s parametrami kalibrovanými na referenčné obdobie 1971-2000. Zmeny klimatických charakteristík boli vyjadrené podľa 2 klimatických scenárov, spracovaných pre povodie horného Hrona v rámci projektu 6 RP CECILIA (Central and Eastern Europe Climate Change Impact and Vulnerability Assessment). Klimatické scenáre boli spracované na základe výstupov tranzietných simulácií 2 globálnych cirkulačných modelov ECHAM4/OPYC3 a HadCM2 (Dubrovský et al., 2005) pre budúce časové horizonty 2025, 2050 a 2100. Podľa hydrologických scenárov priemerných mesačných prietokov možno v budúcnosti na povodí horného Hrona predpokladať zmeny sezónneho rozdelenia odtoku. Predpokladané zmeny sezónneho rozdelenia odtoku sú konzistentné s výsledkami dosiahnutými v predchádzajúcich prácach (Danihlík et al., 2004), v ktorých boli hydrologické scenáre odtoku na povodí horného Hrona spracované na základe klimatických scenárov, založených na výstupoch globálnych cirkulačných modelov CCCM97 a GISS98.
The decline in groundwater levels is a cause of concern in many regions of the world, including the Sand Ridge of Hungary. The causes of the regional depletion range from rising air temperatures, changes in precipitation, domestic and agricultural groundwater use and past amelioration and recent afforestation, including the effects of drilling for crude oil exploration. The relations between the decline, the soil water regime and groundwater recharge under existing aged forests remained unclear thus far. Based on our monitoring of groundwater and soil moisture we aim to clarify this interplay in a new experimental site on the hilltop of the Sand Ridge. We compared three land-uses: a 41-year-old black locust (Robinia Pseudoacacia) offshoot forest, an 83-year-old first generation black pine (Pinus nigra) forest, and a grassland control site. The observed differences in the soil moisture profiles and dynamics were connected to the use of water by the given type of vegetation. We indicated a connection between the disruption of the groundwater recharge and the loss of contact of the rooting system of the forests with the deepening of the unconfined aquifer. Even if the aged forests could locally contribute to the decline, we conclude that the decline at the hilltop site that may be more strongly driven by other regional factors.
The paper reviews recent climate change impact studies for the Slovak National Climate Program (SNKP). Basic adaptation strategies are also discussed. Priorities for future research within the SNKP are suggested. and Článok prináša prehľad o metodických postupoch, používaných v súčasnosti na určovanie možného vplyvu zmeny klímy na odtokové procesy. Nadväzuje pritom na prehľad uvedený v prácach S z o l g a y, et al. (1997), S z o l g a y a H l a v č o v á (2000), H l a v č o v á, et al. (2000) a sústreďuje sa najmä na pokrok v uvedenej problematike za posledné 4 roky, dokumentovaný na základe publikácií v niektorých vedúcich karentovaných časopisoch a výsledkov správy IPCC. Identifikuje smery výskumu v oblasti analýzy časových radov pre posudzovanie možnej zmeny podmienok tvorby odtoku, ako aj v oblasti využívania závislostí medzi odtokom a jeho podmieňujúcimi činiteľmi na určovanie možnej zmeny odtoku v dôsledku klimatickej zmeny.
