This paper examines the performance of four classifiers for Brain Computer Interface (BCI) systems based on multichannel EEG recordings. The classifiers are designed to distinguish EEG patterns corresponding to performance of several mental tasks. The first one is the basic Bayesian classifier (BC) which exploits only interchannel covariance matrices corresponding to different mental tasks. The second classifier is also based on Bayesian approach but it takes into account EEG frequency structure by exploiting interchannel covariance matrices estimated separately for several frequency bands (Multiband Bayesian Classifier, MBBC). The third one is based on the method of Multiclass Common Spatial Patterns (MSCP) exploiting only interchannel covariance matrices as BC. The fourth one is based on the Common Tensor Discriminant Analysis (CTDA), which is a generalization of MCSP, taking EEG frequency structure into account. The MBBC and CTDA classifiers are shown to perform significantly better than the two other methods. Computational complexity of the four methods is estimated. It is shown that for all classifiers the increase in the classifying quality is always accompanied by a significant increase of computational complexity.
The process of manual species identification is a daunting task, so much so that the number of taxonomists is seen to be declining. In order to assist taxonomists, many methods and algorithms have been proposed to develop semi-automated and fully automated systems for species identification. While semi-automated tools would require manual intervention by a domain expert, fully automated tools are assumed to be not as reliable as manual or semi-automated identification tools. Hence, in this study we investigate the accuracy of fully automated and semi-automated models for species identification. We have built fully automated and semi-automated species classification models using the monogenean species image dataset. With respect to monogeneans’ morphology, they are differentiated based on the morphological characteristics of haptoral bars, an-chors, marginal hooks and reproductive organs (male and female copulatory organs). Landmarks (in the semi-automated model) and shape morphometric features (in the fully automated model) were extracted from four monogenean species images, which were then classified using k-nearest neighbour and artificial neural network. In semi-automated models, a classification accuracy of 96.67 % was obtained using the k-nearest neighbour and 97.5 % using the artificial neural network, whereas in fully automated models, a classification accuracy of 90 % was obtained using the k-nearest neighbour and 98.8 % using the artificial neural network. As for the cross-validation, semi-automated models performed at 91.2 %, whereas fully automated models performed slightly higher at 93.75 %. and Corresponding author: Sarinder Kaur A/p Kashmir Singh
The effects of potassium (K) deficiency on chlorophyll (Chl) content, photosynthetic gas exchange, and photosystem II (PSII) photochemistry during the seedling stage were investigated in two soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] cultivars, low-K sensitive Tiefeng31 and low-K tolerant Shennong6. The cultivars were grown hydroponically in K-sufficient (KS) and K-deficient (KD) solutions. Photosynthetic gas exchange and Chl content in Tiefeng31 were severely affected by the low K condition, but were almost unaffected in Shennong6. This difference is in accordance with the PSII photochemistry in the plants, indicating that the photosynthetic apparatus of Shennong6 is more tolerant to low-K stress than that of Tiefeng31. and X.-T. This paper discusses the quality of slant wet delays (SWD) computed from GPS measurements. The SWDs are generally used as input data for GPS tomography, which allows the three-dimensional reconstruction of water vapour distribution in the atmosphere. The research presented is based on a comparison of slant wet delays acquired by different strategies based on double-differenced Global Positioning System (GPS) data. The GPS-derived SWDs were compared with those directly measured by a water vapour radiometer (W VR). The best results from the applied G PS strategies were achieved by a simple mapping of GPS-derived zenith total delays into SWD without adding horizontal gradients or post-fit residuals., Michal Kačmařík, Jan Douša and Jan Zapletal., and Obsahuje bibliografické odkazy
The growth parameters of the green lacewing, Chrysoperla nipponensis-B (Okamoto), were studied under laboratory conditions. The highest mortality was recorded in the immature stages (instars 1st, 2nd, 3rd and pupae) of C. nipponensis fed on the eggs of Corcyra cephalonica (37.26%). The sex ratios (proportion of female to male) when reared on the eggs of C. cephalonica and an artificial diet with ginger were 0.93 : 1.00 and 0.87 : 1.00, respectively. The maximum life spans of females reared on the eggs of C. cephalonica and an artificial diet with ginger were 63 and 64 days, respectively. The females reared on the eggs of C. cephalonica produced the highest number of eggs (10.4) on the fifth day of oviposition, whereas on the artificial diet with ginger it was 9.26 on the eighth day of oviposition. The net reproductive rate (Ro) and maximum gross reproductive rate (GRR) of C. nipponensis fed on the eggs of C. cephalonica were 69.50 and 223.10 females per female per generation, respectively, whereas for the artificial diet with ginger they were 117.24 and 236.89 females per female per generation, respectively. Mean generation time (T) was 37.06 and 48.16 for the eggs of C. cephalonica and artificial diet with ginger, respectively. The intrinsic rate of natural increase (r) was 0.11 and 0.09 females per female per day for the eggs of C. cephalonica and artificial diet with ginger, respectively. The finite rate of increase (λ) was 1.12 and 1.11 females per female per day for the eggs of C. cephalonica and artificial diet with ginger, respectively. The population doubling time (DT) was 6.05 days on the diet of eggs of C. cephalonica and 7.00 on the artificial diet with ginger., Shafique A. Memon, Dzolkhifli Omar, Rita Muhamad, Ahamd S. Habitat affinities of the red-listed and EU Habitat Directive moss species Hamatocaulis vernicosus and the more widely distributed allied species Scorpidium cossonii and Warnstorfia exannulata were analysed. Ecological preferences of these fen mosses, with respect to water pH, water conductivity, Ellenberg’s moisture and nutrient indicator values, were compared in three different European locations (Bohemian Massif, the West Carpathians and Bulgaria) using logistic regressions fitted by means of Huisman-Olff-Fresco models. Inter-specific co-occurrences of the species were also investigated. Warnstorfia exannulata preferred slightly acid conditions, about pH 5.6 at all the locations studied. Ecological behaviour of S. cossonii was very similar at all the locations, where it occupied base-rich habitats (pH > 7). The pH optimum of H. vernicosus, occupying habitats in the middle part of the base richness gradient, varied between locations from 6.0 in Bulgaria to 6.7–7.0 in the West Carpathians and Bohemian Massif. Niche diversification followed the gradient in Ellenberg nutrient indicator values and was similar at all the locations. In the Bohemian Massif and Bulgaria, the occurrence of W. exannulata was further associated with a relatively high moisture indicated by the Ellenberg indicator value. The results obtained from the Huisman-Olff-Fresco models accord with the results of inter-specific co-occurrences. Moreover, the latter method revealed a link between H. vernicosus and the occurrence of disjunctly occurring boreal sedges, suggesting the relic nature of H. vernicosus habitats at these locations.
Although male rats generally outperform females in many spatial tasks, sometimes gender differences are not present. This preliminary study examined gender effects in the Enemy avoidance task, in which a rat on a stable circular arena avoids approaching a small mobile robot while collecting randomly dispersed small pellets. Whenever distance between robot and the rat dropped below 25 cm, animal was punished by a mild footshock. Female rats showed thigmotaxis, hypolocomotion and avoidance of robot in the habituation phase, when approaches were not punished. No statistically significant differences in avoidance learning under reinforcement training sessions were observed; but females still spent significantly more time at periphery of the arena and foraged less than males. We conclude that females were able to perform at the same level as males under reinforcement despite different behavioral strategy. The thigmotaxic behavior appears to function as innate escape strategy in female rats triggered by the stressing effect of the moving robot rather then the presence of shocks., J. Svoboda, ... Sandstones have been widely used as a building material since the medieval time all around the Europe. Porosity is one of the main factors affecting the resistance to weathering processes and consequently to the changes of mechanical and physical properties of these stones. Rock material is generally negatively influenced especially during the winter period when frost action takes place. Effect of salt crystals and ice formation depends on the character of pore space, including the pore size distribution. Mercury porosimetry is well known method which provides information about porosity and pore size distribution of samples, but as any other method, it has its own limitations. X-ray microtomography can be used as a complementary method enabling another "view" into the pore space. Main aim of this paper has been to provide the information about the use of these two mentioned methods and comparison of obtained results, within the study of sandstone weathering. The research was focused on two commonly used Czech Cretaceous sandstones - Hořice and Božanov. The stones were exposed to the accelerated durability test which is based on the meteorological data measured in Prague winters from 1998 to 2008. There were described the changes in the area of pores diameters > 5 μm. Use of mercury porosimetry together with X-ray microtomgraphy enabled more detailed understanding of the processes inside the stone structure., Kateřina Kovářová, Robert Ševčík and Zuzana Weishauptová., and Obsahuje bibliografické odkazy
Growing worldwide efforts to replace (reduce) animal testing and to improve alternative in vitro tests which may be more efficient in terms of both time, cost and scientific validity include also genotoxicity/mutagenicity endpoints. The aim of the review article was to summarize currently available in vitro testing approaches in this field, their regulatory acceptance and recommended combinations for classification of chemicals. A study using the combination of Comet Assay performed on two cell lines and the Chromosomal Aberration test on human peripheral lymphocytes was performed with the aim to predict the genotoxic potential of selected paraben esters, serving as a model chemical group. Parabens are widely used in consumer products as preservatives and have been reported to exhibit inconclusive results in numerous genotoxicity studies. The Comet Assay identified Ethylparaben and Benzylparaben as potentially genotoxic. The Chromosomal Aberration test revealed weak genotoxic potential in case of Ethylparaben and positive genotoxicity in case of Butylparaben, Propylparaben and Isopropylparaben. The main reasons for variability seem to be limited water solubility of parabens, determining their bioavailability at the cellular level, and absence of metabolic activation in the Comet Assay. The results confirmed that the Comet Assay should serve as a screening test and should not be used as a stand-alone method for classification of genotoxicity. The weight of evidence approach in risk assessment should be supported with data generated with the use of human relevant in vitro methods based on cells / tissues of human origin.
The regeneration of the sciatic nerve after microsuture was compared with the connection of transected nerve with a coagulum of autologous blood plasma in 20 rabbits. The epineuroperineural suture was performed in 10 rabbits (group A). The severed nerve was approximated with fibrin glue of autologous blood plasma in 10 rabbits (group B). Their skin sensation margin during a 3-month-period of regeneration was examined, 90 days after surgery the connection was inspected and the nerve conduction velocity was measured across the site of the anastomosis. The microsuture was found to be firm in all 10 animals of group A. On the other hand, in 2 animals of group B, the glue failed to keep the nerve stumps approximated (dehiscence occurred in 20 % of the animals). There were no significant differences found on clinical and electrophysiological testing of regenerated nerves of both groups. The method of autologous fibrin glue in the repair of peripheral nerve transection does not provide a sufficiently firm connection. This procedure with the preparation of the centrifuged plasma is a more time-consuming method in comparison with the microsuture. Epineuroperineural microsuture with maximal effort to adapt the corresponding nerve fibres remains the method of choice for peripheral nerve reconstruction.
