Autor referuje o mezinárodní vědecké konferenci „Zrod nové Evropy: Versailles, St. Germain, Trianon a dotváření poválečného mírového systému“, která se konala ve Slovenském institutu v Praze ve dnech 8. a 9. června 2010 a kterou uspořádal Historický ústav Akademie věd České republiky, v. v. i., ve spolupráci s Historickým ústavem Slovenské akademie věd, Slovenským institutem v Praze a Slovensko-českou společností. Oceňuje přitom zejména fakt, že na přednesených referátech byla patrná pozvolná tendence k interdisciplinárnímu výzkumu. and This is a report on an international academic conference, ‘The Birth of a New Europe: Versailles, Saint-Germain-en-Laye, and Trianon and the Completion of the Post-war Peace’. Held in the Slovak Institute in Prague on 8 and 9 June 2010, the conference was organized by the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, in collaboration with the Institute of History of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, the Slovak Institute in Prague, and the Slovak-Czech Society. The author particularly appreciates the fact that the papers reflected a clear, gradual tendency towards interdisciplinary research.
This article offers a model, based on the physical conditions of articulation, for the relation between Sumerian and Akkadian stops. Other models can be discounted with a high probability. It is further argued, that the use of signs in older Akkadian should not be interpreted only from one of the two languages involved. From this point of view, a probably (if not fully provable) theory for the Akkadian š and its Sumerian counterparts is developed.
The article deals with the phenomenon of so called Afghan landai – short lyric songs, which are mostly improvised and sung by women. Texts of landais (translated from French version of Pashtun women’s poetry) are accompanied by an introduction to the issue of honor/shame societies (cultures sharing a significant concept of masculine and feminine “honor”). Landais reflect often neglected perspective - the everyday reality of life seen through the eyes of Afghan women.
Vertex deviation in the galactic plane is not compatible with the
Oort-Lindbalad theory about galactic rotation (stationary system with cylindrical symmetry). However, like we show in this work, it can be obtained in a stellar system model that verifies the Chandrasekhar postulates in a non-stationary state, axial symmetry, non-cylindrical, and with an equatorial plane of symmetry.
Intense collisional transport of bimodal sediment mixture in open-channel turbulent flow with water as carrying liquid is studied. The study focusses on steep inclined flows transporting solids of spherical shape and differing in either size or mass. A process of vertical sorting (segregation) of the two different solids fractions during the transport is analyzed and modelled. A segregation model is presented which is based on the kinetic theory of granular flows and builds on the Larcher-Jenkins segregation model for dry bimodal mixtures. Main modifications of the original model are the carrying medium (water instead of air) and a presence of a non-uniform distribution of sediment across the flow depth. Testing of the modified model reveals that the model is applicable to flow inclination slopes from 20 to 30 degrees approximately, making it appropriate for debris flow conditions. Changing the slope outside the specified range leads to numerical instability of the solution. A use of the bimodal mixture model is restricted to the grain size ratio 1.4 and no restriction is found for the grain mass ratio in a realistic range applicable to natural conditions. The model reveals trends in the vertical sorting under variable conditions showing that the sorting is more intense if flow is steeper and/or the difference in size or mass is bigger between the two sediment fractions in a bimodal mixture.
