Competition plays an important role in the replacement of native species by alien plants. A greenhouse experiment was conducted to investigate whether the competition pattern of alien Robinia pseudoacacia L. and native Quercus acutissima Carr. is affected by soil sterilization. Physiological traits, such as gas-exchange parameters and chlorophyll (Chl) content, and growth traits, such as the biomass accumulation of the two species, were examined in natural soil or in soil sterilized with benomyl. The results show that native Q. acutissima inhibits the growth of R. pseudoacacia in natural soil. When the two plants coexisted and competed under sterilization treatment, R. pseudoacacia was less inhibited by Q. acutissima and the competition of R. pseudoacacia decreased the growth of Q. acutissima in terms of biomass, Chl a, Chl b, total Chl, and Chl a/b. These results suggest that soil sterilization benefits the growth of R. pseudoacacia and changes the competition pattern by the changed soil biota. Soil sterilization increased the biomass of root nodules, which ultimately benefits the growth of R. pseudoacacia and root nodule bacteria may be important in the dispersal and invasion process of nitrogen-fixing alien plants such as R. pseudoacacia., H. Dírkonošci (Foraminifera), mořští prvoci s vápenatou schránkou, obývají naši planetu více než půl miliardy let. Zkoumáním způsobu života těch současných se mnohé dozvíme o jejich pravěkých předcích i o dávných mořích, ve kterých žili., Foraminifera - a rich group of mainly marine microorganisms - are widely used for paleoecological reconstructions. Their occurrence provides important data about past ecological conditions of the sites. We reconstructed former conditions in Židlochovice research site (southern Moravia) by comparing fossil communities with the recent ones present on the island of Rab (Adriatic Sea)., and Anna Poštulková.
Zdá se ovšem, že současné studie kombinující morfologické, genetické a cytogenetické znaky mohou být klíčem pro odhalení skutečné druhové diverzity., This article briefly summarizes the last two and a half centuries of taxonomic research into the European genus of scorpions commonly known as small wood scorpions (Euscorpius). Despite the fact that taxonomists have been focusing on this genus since the mid-18th century, their taxonomy is not yet sufficiently resolved. However, present studies seem to be on the right track, and looking into a combination of morphological, genetic and cytogenetic features may hold the key to revealing the true diversity of the species., and Jana Plíšková.
The rose aphid, Macrosiphum rosae, living on rose var. Black Magic, was reared in the laboratory at four constant temperatures 15, 18, 22 and 25 ± 1°C, 75 ± 5% R.H. and 14L : 10D. Parameters investigated included developmental rate, survival, pre-reproductive delay and fecundity. The rate of nymphal development (0.17) was greatest at 22°C. The longest developmental time (12.33 days) was recorded at 15°C. The generation time was longest and shortest at 15°C and 22°C respectively. The lower developmental threshold was calculated to be 9.05°C. Based on this, the degree-day requirement from birth to adulthood was found to be 77.5 dd. The pre-reproductive delay also decreased markedly with increase in temperature from 15°C to 22°C. The longest lifespan of apterous females (12.38 d) was observed at 15°C, whereas the shortest (8.06 d) was at 25°C. The mean adult longevity declined with increase in temperature from 15°C to 25°C. The fecundity of females (progeny/female) increased from 11.38 to 28.88 with increase in temperature from 15°C to 22°C but then decreased to 8.38 as the temperature increased from 22°C to 25°C. The largest (0.311) and smallest (0.113) rm occurred at 22°C and 15°C respectively. All of the parameters of the M. rosae life cycle at the four temperatures tested were optimum at 22°C. This Iranian population of M. rosae can develop at lower temperatures than an Australian population.
Encarsia bimaculata (Heraty & Polaszek) is an abundant parasitoid of Bemisia tabaci in southern China. The effects of constant temperatures on a range of life history traits, including development, survival of immatures, longevity and reproduction of adults, were studied in the laboratory. The developmental period from egg to adult ranged from 34.3 ± 0.4 d at 20°C to 8.7 ± 0.6 d at 32°C, A total of 181.4 ± 2.4 degree-days were required to complete development with a lower developmental threshold of 11.6 ± 0.3°C. The survivorship of E. bimaculata from 2nd instar to adult varied from 81.3 ± 1.7% at 20°C to 91.0 ± 1.8% at 26°C. Average adult female longevity was 8.4 ± 0.7 d at 20°C and 5.4 ± 0.4 d at 32°C, and daily production of offspring peaked at 29°C with 4.5 offspring per female. The maximum oviposition occurred three days after adult emergence at 23, 26, 29 and 32°C, and four days at 20°C. Total number of offspring produced per female varied from 24.3 ± 2.0 at 32°C to 29.3 ± 2.9 at 20°C. The maximum intrinsic rate of increase (rm) was 0.2163 ± 0.013 at 29°C, followed by 0.2062 ± 0.022 at 32°C. Results indicate that E. bimaculata reaches its maximum biological potential at temperatures ranging from 26°C to 32°C with 29°C being the optimal temperature.
The effects of shoot girdling on stomatal conductance (gs), leaf photosynthesis (PN), concentrations of carbohydrates, nitrogen and chlorophyll (Chl) in leaves, areal leaf mass (ALM), the diameter and length of shoots, and bud abscission in pistachio were investigated. Girdling individual shoots at the base of the current year’s shoot (girdle I), separating inflorescent buds on the terminal current year’s shoot from the developing fruits on the previous year’s shoot, reduced inflorescent bud abscission by 70% in comparison to nongirdled controls. Girdle I significantly reduced concentrations of nitrogen in leaves but increased those of nonstructural carbohydrates particularly of starch. Shoot diameter increased by 13.1% and 26.4% at 33 and 81 days after girdling (DAG), respectively, compared to 1% and 3.4% in the control, respectively. Both the leaf dry mass/fresh mass ratio and ALM were increased significantly by girdle I from 12 DAG. The concentrations of Chl a, Chl b, Chl (a+b), as well as the ratio of Chl a/b, all decreased with girdle I. The greatest negative effect of girdle I was on gs and PN. PN was reduced by 55% of its initial value and was 44% less than in the control leaves at 10 DAG, and fell to approximately 30% that of the control from 21 DAG. In contrast, girdling at the base of one-year-old shoots (girdle II), thus not separating fruits from the inflorescent buds, did not significantly affect gs or PN. The effect of girdling on PN and the possible factors that are involved in the reduction of photosynthesis in pistachio are discussed., S. N. Vemmos, A. Papagiannopoulou, S.
