Slurs are pejorative expressions that derogate individuals or groups on the basis of their gender, race, nationality, religion, sexual orientation and so forth. In the constantly growing literature on slurs, it has become customary to appeal to so-called “neutral counterparts” for explaining the extension and truth-conditional content of slurring terms. More precisely, it is commonly assumed that every slur shares its extension and literal content with a non-evaluative counterpart term. I think this assumption is unwarranted and, in this paper, I shall present two arguments against it. (i) A careful comparison of slurs with complex or thick group-referencing pejoratives lacking neutral counterparts shows that these are in fact very hard to distinguish. (ii) Slurs lack the referential stability of their alleged neutral counterparts, which suggests that they are not coreferential. Developing (ii) will involve introducing a new concept which I regard as essential for understanding how slurs behave in natural language: referential flexibility. I shall support my claims by looking at historical and current ways in which slurs and other pejorative terms are used, and I shall argue that both etymological data and new empirical data support the conclusion that the assumption of neutral counterparts not only is unwarranted but obscures our understanding of what slurs are, and what speakers do with them.
Contextual word prominence in a text is a consequence of the functional relationship between word frequency and text segmentation. This probabilistic function is formalized in quantitative linguistics as Menzerath-Altmann´s law. When this law is applied not only to a text as a whole, but also to individual lexical units which, within contextual boundaries, are transformed into word forms, two contextual levels are formed from each text structure: a segmental and a textual level. On these two levels, the interaction between words can be characterized as the semantic specification of the lexical units. The contextual characteristics of individual words are defined as their contextual weights. The maximum value of this variable, proper to a given frequency, belongs to a set that forms a Menzerathian curve, i.e. a curve that complies with the basic principle of text structures. This curve can be treated as a semantic attractor.
The verbo-nominal syntagmas in Hindī represent multi-word naming units of action, process or state. They are developed from some more complex syntactic structures also including other functional words (postpositions and postpositional phrases, adverbs etc.). As condensed structures/formations they include a noun or an adjective and a functional verb. There is a set of verbs, which lost their original meaning (light verbs) and have a verbalizing function. The VNS-es as naming units in their semantic structure and development include several types. As literal VNS-es they are easily comprehensible, since the nominal and the verbal constituents signalize the meaning of the syntagma sufficiently clearly. In other types of VNS-es at least one constituent shifts its original meaning and different types or stages of metaphoric and idiomatic syntagmas arise. The metaphor is a poetic and stylistic figure; nevertheless many metaphors become semantic units denoting verbal action/process/state.
This paper concerns the topic of slur reclamation. I start with presenting two seemingly opposing accounts of slur reclamation, Jeshion’s (2020) Polysemy view and Bianchi’s (2014) Echoic view. Then, using the data provided by linguists, I discuss the histories of the reclamation of the slur ‘queer’ and of the n-word, which brings me to presenting a view of reclamation that combines the Polysemy view and Echoic view. The Combined view of slur reclamation proposed in this paper postulates meaning change while fleshing out the pragmatic mechanisms necessary for it to occur.
Carnap’s reinvention of the Ramsey-sentence approach to scientific theories has been at the center of a new debate in recent years. Following Grover Maxwell, Psillos (2000a) argued that Carnap’s re-invention of the Ramsey-sentence had failed to lead to the desired neutral stance in the realism-instrumentalism debate, and ended, instead, to a form of structural realism which happened to be liable to Newman’s objection to Russell’s version of structural realism. The objection held that without putting suitable restrictions on the range of the variables of the Ramsey-sentence, a Ramsey-sentence approach to theories renders trivial and a priori true all ontological commitments to unobservable entities issued by scientific theories. By arguing that Carnap achieved the neutral stance, Friedman (2011) counter Psillos claim. He denied that any form of realism could be attributed to Carnap. In this paper, I provide a middle ground, where an unorthodox form of structural realism could be attributed to Carnap. I highlight parts of Carnap’s work which deal with the problem of designation of abstract terms and the relation of the language to the facts of the matter (in Carnap 1934; 1950; 1966), to argue that it was Carnap’s view about the practical methodological considerations, being at work in the construction (or choice) of the linguistic systems, which led him to the unorthodox form of structural realism. I also claim that the same practical considerations constitute the nub of a viable Carnapian answer to Newman’s objection., Carnapovo znovuobjevení Ramseyova přístupu k vědeckým teoriím bylo v posledních letech v centru nové debaty. In the paper, I distinguish between the semantic and the ''direct'' approach to event ontology. The first approach, employed by D. Davidson, starts with logical analysis of natural language. This analysis uncovers quantification over the domain of events. Thus, we have ontological commitment to events and, at the same time, also a suggestion of how to view their nature. The second approach, used by J. Kim and D. Lewis, deals with events ''directly'', i.e. not by analyzing language first. Events are postulated because they are useful in other theories (of causation, explanation, etc.) and their nature is adjusted to the needs of these theories. In the paper, I analyze both approaches and outline their problems and advantages. I conclude that we should conditionally prefer the latter approach on methodological grounds. This preference is based on the assumption that submitting hypotheses to tests seems to be a crucial part of metaphysical methodology. Since the ''direct'' approach to event ontology allows for more testing, it should be preferred over the semantic approach., V příspěvku rozlišuji mezi sémantickým a ,,přímým'' přístupem k ontologii událostí. První přístup, který používá D. Davidson, začíná logickou analýzou přirozeného jazyka. Tato analýza odhaluje kvantifikaci v oblasti událostí. Máme proto ontologický závazek k událostem a zároveň i návrh na to, jak se dívat na jejich povahu. Druhý přístup, který používají J. Kim a D. Lewis, se zabývá událostmi ,,přímo'', tj. Ne analýzou jazyka jako první. Události jsou postulovány, protože jsou užitečné v jiných teoriích (příčin, vysvětlení atd.) A jejich povaha je přizpůsobena potřebám těchto teorií. V příspěvku analyzuji oba přístupy a nastiňuji jejich problémy a výhody. Závěrem konstatuji, že bychom měli z metodických důvodů upřednostňovat druhý přístup. Tato preference je založena na předpokladu, že předložení hypotéz k testům se zdá být klíčovou součástí metafyzické metodiky. This article deals with pairs of synonymous words in Tamil. These pairs are very frequent in modern Tamil but only a few words constituting these pairs can be considered complete synonyms. Most of them differ in meaning, emotive charge or source of origin. The pairs are arranged into several major groups according to their nature and then commented upon. The article also touches upon the question of the function of these pairs in the language.
The paper sketches and defends two instances of the strategy Let N’s be whatever they have to be to explain our knowledge of them—one in which N’s are natural numbers and one in which N’s are propositions. The former, which makes heavy use of Hume’s principle and plural quantification, grounds our initial knowledge of number in (a) our identification of objects as falling under various types, (b) our ability to count (i.e. to pair memorized numerals with individuated objects of one’s attention), (c) our (initially perceptual) recognition of plural properties (e.g. being three in number), and (d) our predication of those properties of pluralities that possess them (even though no individuals in the pluralities do). Given this foundation, one can use Fregean techniques to non-paradoxically generate more extensive arithmetical knowledge. The second instance of my metaphysics-in-the-service-of-epistemology identifies propositions (i.e. semantic contents of some sentences, objects of the attitudes, and bearers of truth, falsity, necessity, contingency, and apriority) with certain kinds of purely representational cognitive acts, operations, or states. In addition to providing natural solutions to traditionally un-addressed epistemic problems involving linguistic cognition and language use, I argue that this metaphysical conception of propositions expands the solution spaces of many of the most recalcitrant and long-standing problems in natural-language semantics and the philosophy of language.
Semantic changes observed in aphasic patients are examined in two aspects: as transfers of names and transfers of meaning. The most frequent in the material under scrutiny are semantic changes resulting form the contiguity of meanings (metonymies) and shifts motivated by the similarity of names (paronymies). Changes based on the similarity of meanings (metaphors) and the contiguity of names (ellipses) are less frequent. The relative frequencies of the mechanisms underlying semantic change in aphasia lead one to reflect on the nature of cognitive functions in aphasic patients. That the configurations of form and content, obtained by analyzing aphasic texts, are stored in people´s cognitive structures and as such constitute templates or patterns necessary for the comprehension and description of reality, as well as for the segmentation of interpreted sequences of information. The patterns recognized in the present study pertain primarily to the visible, physical world, judgments of non-material mental images are less frequent.
