- Type:
- model:article and TEXT
- Subject:
- m-pairwise negative quadrant dependent, Marcinkiewicz-Zygmund inequality, Lr convergence, and complete convergence
- Language:
- English
- Description:
- The authors first establish the Marcinkiewicz-Zygmund inequalities with exponent p (1≤p≤2) for m-pairwise negatively quadrant dependent (m-PNQD) random variables. By means of the inequalities, the authors obtain some limit theorems for arrays of rowwise m-PNQD random variables, which extend and improve the corresponding results in [Y. Meng and Z. Lin (2009)] and [H. S. Sung (2013)]. It is worthy to point out that the open problem of [H. S. Sung, S. Lisawadi, and A. Volodin (2008)] can be solved easily by using the obtained inequality in this paper.

9164. Some literary embellishments in the Gupta inscriptions
- Creator:

- Type:
- model:article and TEXT
- Subject:
- literary embellishments and art
- Language:
- English
- Description:
- The article includes a look at the respective meanings of two types of literary embellishments in the monumental inscriptions of the Gupta dynasty; namely poems praising kings in eight verses, or eight clauses, and a description of the conquest of India (digvijaya) by a king taking place in a counter clockwise direction. It is argued that the eight verses, or the eight relative clauses, represent a selection out of an endless list of the king´s good qualities: he is such a great person that, given the time, or space, the poet could have easily continued praising the king for hours. The counter clockwise direction of the digvijaya is explained by the fact that the king responsible for the conquest was no longer alive at the time of the composition of the inscription´s text and the erection of the monument. In the interpretation of these inscriptions, both features should be regarded as historical documents.

- Type:
- model:article and TEXT
- Subject:
- Darboux function, mean value theorem, continuous function, integrable function, differentiable function, arithmetic mean, geometric mean, and harmonic mean
- Language:
- English
- Description:
- The aim of the paper is to present some mean value theorems obtained as consequences of the intermediate value property. First, we will prove that any nonextremum value of a Darboux function can be represented as an arithmetic, geometric or harmonic mean of some different values of this function. Then, we will present some extensions of the Cauchy or Lagrange Theorem in classical or integral form. Also, we include similar results involving divided differences. The paper was motivated by some problems published in mathematical journals.

9166. Some methods to obtain t-norms and t-conorms on bounded lattices
- Creator:

- Type:
- model:article and TEXT
- Subject:
- t-norm, ordinal sum, t-conorm, and bounded lattice
- Language:
- English
- Description:
- In this study, we introduce new methods for constructing t-norms and t-conorms on a bound\-ed lattice L based on a priori given t-norm acting on [a,1] and t-conorm acting on [0,a] for an arbitrary element a∈L∖{0,1}. We provide an illustrative example to show that our construction methods differ from the known approaches and investigate the relationship between them. Furthermore, these methods are generalized by iteration to an ordinal sum construction for t-norms and t-conorms on a bounded lattice.

- Subject:
- nilpotent $n$-Lie superalgebra, Engel's theorem, $S^{\ast }$ algebra, and Frattini subalgebra
- Language:
- English
- Description:
- The paper studies nilpotent $n$-Lie superalgebras over a field of characteristic zero. More specifically speaking, we prove Engel's theorem for $n$-Lie superalgebras which is a generalization of those for $n$-Lie algebras and Lie superalgebras. In addition, as an application of Engel's theorem, we give some properties of nilpotent $n$-Lie superalgebras and obtain several sufficient conditions for an $n$-Lie superalgebra to be nilpotent by using the notions of the maximal subalgebra, the weak ideal and the Jacobson radical.

- Subject:
- parasitic nematodes, Procamallanus, Camallanus, Dentiphilometra, Pingus, Eustrongylides, Proleptinae, freshwater fishes, Hubei Province, and China
- Language:
- English
- Description:
- The present paper comprises a systematic survey of nematodes based on helminthological examinations of 176 specimens of freshwater fishes, belonging to 22 species, from central China (mostly lakes in Hubei Province) collected during the autumn of 2001. The following six species were recorded: Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) fulvidraconis Li, 1935, Camallanus cotti Fujita, 1927, Dentiphilometra monopteri Moravec et Wang, 2002, Pingus sinensis Hsü, 1933, Proleptinae gen. sp. larv., and Eustrongylides sp. larv. Data on their morphology, morphological variability, host range, prevalence, intensity and distribution are provided. SEM studies of P. fulvidraconis and larval Physalopterinae, used for the first time in these species, revealed some additional morphological details and made it possible to redescribe the former. In contrast to the existing description of P. fulvidraconis, this species was found to possess two spicules and a V-shaped gubernaculum with unequal arms (originally mistaken for the left spicule), as well as deirids, whose location can be considered an important taxonomic feature. Larvae of the Physalopterinae have not previously been reported from fishes in China. The finding of larval Eustrongylides in Paramisgurnus dabryanus represents a new host record. All but one nematode species from this zoogeographically interesting region are briefly described and illustrated.

9169. Some new classes of graceful Lobsters obtained from diameter four trees

- Type:
- model:article and TEXT
- Subject:
- graceful labeling, lobster, odd branch, even branch, inverse transformation, and component moving transformation
- Language:
- English
- Description:
- We observe that a lobster with diameter at least five has a unique path H = x0, x1, . . . , xm with the property that besides the adjacencies in H both x0 and xm are adjacent to the centers of at least one K1,s, where s > 0, and each xi , 1 ≤ i ≤ m − 1, is adjacent at most to the centers of some K1,s, where s > 0. This path H is called the central path of the lobster. We call K1,s an even branch if s is nonzero even, an odd branch if s is odd and a pendant branch if s = 0. In the existing literature only some specific classes of lobsters have been found to have graceful labelings. Lobsters to which we give graceful labelings in this paper share one common property with the graceful lobsters (in our earlier works) that each vertex xi , 0 ≤ i ≤ m − 1, is even, the degree of xm may be odd or even. However, we are able to attach any combination of all three types of branches to a vertex xi , 1 ≤ i ≤ m, with total number of branches even. Furthermore, in the lobsters here the vertices xi , 1 ≤ i ≤ m, on the central path are attached up to six different combinations of branches, which is at least one more than what we find in graceful lobsters in the earlier works.

9170. Some new error estimates for finite element methods for second order hyperbolic equations using the Newmark method
- Creator:

- Format:

- Type:
- model:article and TEXT
- Subject:
- acoustic wave equation, finite element method, Newmark method, and new error estimate
- Language:
- English
- Description:
- We consider a family of conforming finite element schemes with piecewise polynomial space of degree k in space for solving the wave equation, as a model for second order hyperbolic equations. The discretization in time is performed using the Newmark method. A new a priori estimate is proved. Thanks to this new a priori estimate, it is proved that the convergence order of the error is h k + τ 2 in the discrete norms of L∞(0, T ; H1 (Ω)) and W1,∞(0, T ; L 2 (Ω)), where h and τ are the mesh size of the spatial and temporal discretization, respectively. These error estimates are useful since they allow us to get second order time accurate approximations for not only the exact solution of the wave equation but also for its first derivatives (both spatial and temporal). Even though the proof presented in this note is in some sense standard, the stated error estimates seem not to be present in the existing literature on the finite element methods which use the Newmark method for the wave equation (or general second order hyperbolic equations).
