Cytochrome oxidase activity from the retina can be enhanced or depressed by free radical-mediated reactions both in positive and negative aspect. The greatest effect was exerted by ischemia/reperfusion, which significantly increased the fluorescent products of lipid peroxidation (358 %, P<0.01) and inhibited the enzyme activity (14 %, P<0.001). After hyperoxia the fluorescent products slightly increased (192 %, P< 0.05) as well as the enzyme activity (133 %, P<0.05). Hypoxia had no effect on any of these parameters. Specific changes in the composition of fluorophores after ischemia/reperfusion were revealed in the fluorescence spectra. The fact that increased lipid peroxidation after hyperoxia and after ischemia/reperfusion does not produce the same effect upon cytochrome oxidase activity might be explained by changes in the kinetic behavior of cytochrome oxidase. In the control enzyme preparation, two binding sites for cytochrome c were observed. One was of the low-affinity (Km=60 mM) and the other of the high-affinity (Km=1.12 mM). After in vitro-initiated lipid peroxidation, the low-affinity binding site was lost and the activity measured under "optimum" conditions at a single cytochrome concentration was higher than in the controls. This implies that oxidative damage to cytochrome oxidase in vivo can be site-specific and its extent should be estimated by performing detailed kinetic analysis as otherwise the results might be misleading., A. We investigated the effect of pertussis toxin (PTX) on hypotensive response induced by acetylcholine (ACh) and bradykinin (BK) and on noradrenaline (NA)-induced pressor response in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). Fifteen-week-old Wistar rats and age-matched SHR were used. Half of SHR received PTX (10 μg/kg/i.v.) and the experiments were performed 48 h later. After the anesthesia the right carotid artery was cannulated in order to record blood pressure (BP). The hypotensive response to ACh was enhanced in SHR compared to Wistar rats. After pretreatment of SHR with PTX the hypotensive response to ACh was reduced compared to untreated SHR and it was also diminished in comparison to Wistar rats. Similarly, the hypotensive response to BK was also decreased after PTX pretreatment. The pressor response to NA was increased in SHR compared to Wistar rats. NA-induced pressor response was considerably decreased after PTX pretreatment compared to untreated SHR. In conclusion, the enhancement of hypotensive and pressor responses in SHR was abolished after PTX pretreatment. Our results suggested that the activation of PTX-sensitive inhibitory Gi proteins is involved in the regulation of integrated vasoactive responses in SHR and PTX pretreatment could be effectively used for modification of BP regulation in this type of experimental hypertension., S. For any $x\in (0,1]$, let $$ x=\frac {1}{d_1}+\frac {1}{d_1(d_1-1)d_2}+\dots +\frac {1}{d_1(d_1-1) \dots d_{n-1}(d_{n-1}-1)d_{n}}+\dots $$ be its Lüroth expansion. Denote by ${P_n(x)}/{Q_n(x)}$ the partial sum of the first $n$ terms in the above series and call it the $n$th convergent of $x$ in the Lüroth expansion. This paper is concerned with the efficiency of approximating real numbers by their convergents $\{{P_n(x)}/{Q_n(x)}\}_{n\ge 1}$ in the Lüroth expansion. It is shown that almost no points can have convergents as the optimal approximation for infinitely many times in the Lüroth expansion. Consequently, Hausdorff dimension is introduced to quantify the set of real numbers which can be well approximated by their convergents in the Lüroth expansion, namely the following Jarník-like set: $\{x\in (0,1]\colon |x-{P_n(x)}/{Q_n(x)}|<{1}/{Q_n(x)^{\nu +1}} \text{infinitely often}\}$ for any $\nu \ge 1$.
Combustion of coal with limestone (a) and co-combustion of coal with limestone with wood, sewage sludge, soap and PTP (b) were performed in CFB. Inorganic matter composition and properties of all input materials were characterized. For this, chemical and coal petrography analyses of solid samples as well as their leaching tests, unburned carbon, and other properties were determined. There are not striking differences in composition of bottom and fly ashes from combustion/co-combustion data. In fly ash samples higher concentrations of Hg (about 2 ppm), As (about 800 ppm) and chlorine (about 400 ppm) are present than they are in bottom ash (0.002 ppm Hg, 250 ppm As, and 220 ppm Cl). Also relating concentrations of above elements determined in emissions are very similar for combustion/co-combustion regimes (about 0.010 mg.m-3 Hg, 0.027 mg.m-3 As and 24 mg.m-3 Cl). Content of unburned carbon in BA is below 2 wt.% and in FA below 0.6 wt.% in all combustion/co-combustion data. In FA samples the concentration of Hg, As, Se, etc. increases with increasing unburned carbon content, i.e. with decreasing grain size of FA. No significant differences in composition of emissions, bottom and fly ashes as well as in composition of water leachates were found from the combustion regimes I, II, III and IV., Martin Stach, Zdeněk Klika, Martina Nováčková and Václav Roubíček., and Obsahuje bibliografii
Eimeria jamescooki sp. n. was recovered from the skink Cryptoblepharus virgatus (Garman) found on the grounds of James Cook University, Townsville (type locality), North Queensland, Australia. Oocysts were 17.5-25.0 (22.1 ± 1.9) × 15-22.5 (17.7 ± 1.6) µm and sporocysts 6.25-10.0 (7.9 ± 1.15) × 3.75-6.25 (5.3 ± 1.0) µm in size. Endogenous stages are described from histological material examined by light microscope and by transmission electron microscope. Both merogony stages and gamonts were found to develop in the cytoplasm of the anterior gut mucosal epithelium. Meront progeny were comprised of 10 to 21 merozoites. Premature macrogamonts were elongate; some host cells contained two elongate macrogamonts. Unique to the presently described species were the Golgi ''plaques'' and an enclosure of tubuli. Mature macrogamonts and young oocysts ranged in size from 14 x 7 to 21 × 11 µm and contained two types of wall-forming bodies, canaliculi and amylopectin granules. Differentiating microgamonts conformed in fine structure with that observed in other eimerians. Their sizes increased from 15.4 × 4.2 to 28 × 8.4 µm while dividing to over 70 nuclei, which formed a corresponding yield of microgametes.
The functional aversive stimulus properties of several IP doses of (±)-amphetamine (1.25-10 mg.kg-1), 2-phenylethylamine (PEA, 2.5-10 mg.kg-1, following inhibition of monoamine oxidase with pargyline 50 mg.kg-1) and phenylethanolamine (6.25-50 mg.kg 1) were measured with the conditioned taste aversion (CTA) paradigm. A two bottle choice procedure was used, water vs. 0.1 % saccharin with one conditioning trial and three retention trials. (±)-Amphetamine and phenylethanolamine induced a significant conditioned taste aversion but PEA did not. (±)-Amphetamine and PEA increased spontaneous locomotor activity but phenylethanolamine had no effects on this measure. Measurement of whole brain levels of these drugs revealed that the peak brain elevation of PEA occurred at approximately 10 min whereas the peak elevations of (±)-amphetamine and phenylethanolamine occurred at approximately 20 min. The present failure of PEA to elicit conditioned taste aversion learning is consistent with previous reports for this compound. The differential functional aversive stimulus effects of these three compounds are surprising since they exhibit similar discriminative stimulus properties and both (±)-amphetamine and PEA are self-administered by laboratory animals. The present data suggest that time to maximal brain concentrations following peripheral injection may be a determinant of the aversive stimulus properties of PEA derivatives., A.J. Greenshaw, S. The activity of α-amylase, glucoamylase, maltase, trehalase, glycogen phosphorylase and trehalose phosphorylase was measured in extracts from larval and adult Hysterothylacium aduncum (Rudolphi, 1802), parasitic nematode of marine fish. The content of glycogen and trehalose in the worm's body was also determined. Both the hydrolytic and phosphorolytic paths of sugar decomposition are present in H. aduncum. In the larvae glycogen was utilised mainly via the hydrolytic path. In the adults the activities of phosphorolytic enzymes were higher than in the larvae. In both stages the activity of trehalose phosphorylase is present. In adult nematodes it is uncommonly high. The dominating sugars in the adults were glucose and glycogen, while in the larvae it was trehalose.
In this paper, necessary and sufficient conditions for equality in the inequalities of Oppenheim and Schur for positive semidefinite matrices are investigated.
This paper is a continuation of [19], [21], [22]. We study flat connections with isolated singularities in some transitive Lie algebroids for which either $\mathbb{R}$ or $\mathop {\mathrm sl}(2,\mathbb{R})$ or $\operatorname{so} (3)$ are isotropy Lie algebras. Under the assumption that the dimension of the isotropy Lie algebra is equal to $n+1$, where $n$ is the dimension of the base manifold, we assign to any such isolated singularity a real number called an index. For $\mathbb{R}$-Lie algebroids, this index cannot be an integer. We prove the index theorem (the Euler-Poincaré-Hopf theorem for flat connections) saying that the index sum is independent of the choice of a connection. Multiplying this index sum by the orientation class of $M$, we get the Euler class of this Lie algebroid. Some integral formulae for indices are given.
