- Description:
- The founder of meditational Buddhism, according to tradition, is Bodhidharma, who originated from India. He is called Putidamo or Damo in Chinese, Boridalma or Dalma in Korean and Bodai Daruma or Daruma in Japanese. His legendary representation can often be seen in the visual art and popular culture of East Asian countries. The paper focuses on the visual representations of Bodhidharma, as they became popular in Japan and Korea. The paper is based on a previous piece of research, undertaken when the author summarized existing information about Bodhidharma, as revealed in primary and secondary textual sources. As part of this research, the author analyzed this information, together with visual sources, in order to trace the formation of the legend and iconography of Bodhidharma from the very beginning. The aim was also to describe their dynamics. Studying the text image relationships, the author here shows, through an analysis of a famous episode of Bodhidharma’s legend, the “Crossing the Yangzi River on a reed”, that images other than Bodhidharma’s had a considerable impact in relation to influencing and altering later texts, as well as the consequent images, thus changing and enriching religious traditions. The power of images can be seen through the commercialization of Bodhidharma’s representations in contemporary Korea as well as in Japan, where commercialization started much earlier and in significantly different forms when compared to Korea. Since most of the publications dealing with Bodhidharma focus on Chinese and Japanese developments, this paper introduces Korean Bodhidharma imagery into the discussion for the first time in a Western language, indicating the importance of studying the differences and similarities in relation to the formation of images of the same legendary figure in context. The focus is on the sources of their models and the degree of change, as well as on how these cultures differ from each other or in relation to their incorporation of images.

- Language:

- Description:
- A total of 7210 unfed adult Ixodes persulcatus Schulze, 1930 and I. ricinus (L., 1758) ticks were collected from the vegetation by flagging in 35 study sites located in the zone of their sympatry (mainly in Leningrad region, Russia). Borrelia infection in ticks was estimated by the dark-field microscopic analysis of gut contents in standard vital preparations at a magnification of ×600. No correlation was revealed between the series of parameters characterising the abundance of each tick species (τ = -0.13) and between the series of these parameters and the prevalence of Borrelia in each vector. It is concluded that in the broad zone of I. persulcatus and I. ricinus sympatry, the presence and proportion of one vector in the ecosystem does not have any significant effect on the extensity of infection and on the epizootic and epidemic significance of the other vector. Each tick species has its independent (of the other species) and relatively original functional role in the focal ecosystem.

- Type:
- model:article and TEXT
- Subject:
- scrambling index, primitive matrix, and Boolean rank
- Language:

- Description:
- The scrambling index of an $n\times n$ primitive Boolean matrix $A$ is the smallest positive integer $k$ such that $A^k(A^{\rm T})^k=J$, where $A^{\rm T}$ denotes the transpose of $A$ and $J$ denotes the $n\times n$ all ones matrix. For an $m\times n$ Boolean matrix $M$, its Boolean rank $b(M)$ is the smallest positive integer $b$ such that $M=AB$ for some $m\times b$ Boolean matrix $A$ and $b\times n$ Boolean matrix $B$. In 2009, M. Akelbek, S. Fital, and J. Shen gave an upper bound on the scrambling index of an $n\times n$ primitive matrix $M$ in terms of its Boolean rank $b(M)$, and they also characterized all primitive matrices that achieve the upper bound. In this paper, we characterize primitive Boolean matrices that achieve the second largest scrambling index in terms of their Boolean rank.

- Description:
- This paper presents and analyzes the estimators of the structural parameters, in the Bühlmann-Straub model, involving complicated mathematical properties of conditional expectations and of conditional covariances. So to enable to use the better linear credibility results obtained in this model, we will provide useful estimators for the structure parameters. From the practical point of view it is stated the attractive property of unbiasedness for these estimators.

- Description:
- For more than sixty years lith ium carbonate has been used in medicine. However, during its administration different side effects including oxidative stress can occur. Selenium belongs to essential elements possessing antioxidant properties. This study aimed at evaluating if selenium co uld be used as a protective adjuvant in lithium therapy. The experiment was performed on four groups of Wistar rats: I (control), II (Li), III (Se), IV (Li + Se) treated with saline, lithium carbonate (2.7 mg Li/kg b.w.), sodium selenite (0.5 mg Se/kg b.w.) and lithium carbonate (2.7 mg Li/kg b.w.) + sodium selenite (0.5 mg Se/kg b.w.), respectively. All substances were administered as water solutions by stomach tube for 3 or 6 weeks. Catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GP x) as well as malonyldialdehyde (MDA) were determined in brain homogenates. Lithium slightly enhanced MDA and depressed CAT and SOD after 6 weeks as well as GPx after 3 weeks. Selenium co -administration show ed tendency to restore the disturbed parameters. Selenium alone and given with lithium significantly increased GPx vs. Li- treated group after 3 weeks. Having regarded the outcomes of this study, the research on application of selenium during lithium treatment seems to be worth continuation., M. Kiełczykowska, J. Kocot, A. Lewandowska, R. - Description:
- The angelology found in the Hị kmat al-ishrāq of Shihāb al-Dīn al-Suhrawardī al-Maqtūl (d. 1191) has been the source of much debate. In many of his studies of Suhrawardian philosophy, Henry Corbin stresses the Persian influence on al-Suhrawardī’s thought, especially Suhrawardian angelology. Al-Suhrawardī does refer to Zoroastrianism in his introduction to the Hị kmat al-ishrāq, but to what extent is his angelology Zoroastrian? Does the use of Zoroastrian terminology and vocabulary mean that the angelology is Zoroastrian? This paper will explore Suhrawardian angelology, attempting to place it in context and to assess its provenance. It will be seen that the potential influences on his angelology are far wider than scholars, such as Corbin, have suggested in the past. Although focusing on al-Suhrawardī’s Hị kmat al-ishrāq, his use of angels in his other works will also be considered.

- Subject:
- Pythagorean triples, elapsed time window, point pattern, and scaled number of processors
- Language:
- English
- Description:
- The developed and tested part of the scalable benchmark code, the Pythagorean triples core, has been applied to the platform system of a scalable number of processors. The measurement has been performed on the system cluster consisting of 16 Pentium CPUs. The number of nodes of selected subclusters of an equivalent or a different performance of CPUs is scaled by the factor of 2. The core has been running in different conditions (homogeneous subcluster, heterogeneous subcluster, computationally free nodes and/or occupied nodes, etc.). A group of four measurements of the scalable number of processors has been selected and displayed in four characteristic blocks of the elapsed time Windows comparable with those of the previous paper. The characteristic exponential curves fit well to the measured points under the normal conditions of task run. The maximum deviations of the two exponential parameters in all presented cases do not exceed 5 percent.
