Spraying low concentrated (0.5-5.0 mM) solutions of NaHSO3 on Satsuma mandarin (Citrus unshiu Marc.) leaves resulted in enhancement (maximal about 15 % at 1 mM NaHSO3) of net photosynthetic rate (PN) for 6 d. The potential photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2 (PS2, Fv/Fm) and the quantum yield of PS2 electron transport (ΦPS2) were increased under strong photon flux density (PFD). The slow phase of millisecond delayed light emission (ms-DLE) was increased, showing that the transmembrane proton motive force related to photophosphorylation was enhanced. We also observed that low concentrations of NaHSO3 promoted the production of ATP in irradiated leaves. We suggest that the increase in PN in Satsuma mandarin leaves caused by low concentrations of NaHSO3 solution may have been due to the stimulation of photophosphorylation and, hence, the increase in photochemical efficiency through speeding-up of PS2 electron transport. Photoinhibition of photosynthesis in leaves was modified by NaHSO3 treatment under high PFD. Hence the increase in leaf dry mass seems to be associated with the mitigation of photoinhibition caused by strong PFD. and Y.-P. Guo ... [et al.].
The effects of soil and water contamination by lead (Pb) and the consequences on plant growth and yield are of great concern worldwide. Limits of the Pb concentration in water have been established by governmental institutions but these differ from each other. In this study, Lactuca sativa (var. Reine de Mai) plants were exposed to low Pb(NO3)2 doses (0.05-20 mg L-1), including the recommended limit values for irrigation water by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). After 28 d of exposure, lettuce plants did not present visible morphological alterations or growth impairment, but CO2 assimilation rate (PN), photochemical quenching, and effective quantum efficiency of PSII were negatively affected, while intercellular CO2 concentration, stomatal conductance, or transpiration rate were not influenced. Our results suggested that limitations on photosynthesis occurred from different reasons than due to the decrease of internal CO2 availability, alterations of photophosphorylation, and/or electron transport rate. Thus, this lettuce cultivar showed photosynthetic susceptibility to low doses of Pb, even at lower concentrations than those maximal allowed for irrigation water by FAO. Furthermore, PN seemed to be the most sensitive biomarker for evaluation of Pb susceptibility., S. Silva, G. Pinto, C. Santos., and Obsahuje bibliografii
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of low air temperature during nocturnal (TN) and diurnal (TD) periods as well as the substrate temperature (TS) on photosynthesis of 'Valencia' orange tree grafted on Rangpur lime rootstock. The experiment was carried out in a growth chamber with seven-month-old plants. The plants were exposed to the following temperature regimes: low substrate temperature (LTS, with: TD = 28°C, TN = 20°C,
TS = 10°C); low air temperature during night (LTN, with: TD = 28°C, TN = 10°C, TS = 26°C); low temperature during nighttime and also low substrate temperature (LTSN, with: TD = 28°C, TN = 10°C,
TS = 10°C); low air temperature during both diurnal and nocturnal periods (LTND, with: TD = 17°C, TN = 10°C, TS = 26°C); and finally to low air temperature (night and day) and low substrate temperature (LTSND, with: TD = 17°C, TN = 10°C, TS = 10°C). As reference (control), plants were subjected to TD = 28°C, TN = 20°C, and TS = 26°C. Measurements of leaf gas exchange, photochemical activity and carbohydrate concentrations were performed after six days of exposure to each thermal treatment. Compared to the control, all thermal regimes caused reductions in photosynthesis due to diffusive and metabolic limitations. The photoinhibition was transient in plants exposed to night and substrate low temperatures, whereas it was severe and chronic in plants subjected to chilling during the diurnal period. However, the lowest photosynthesis was observed in plants with low substrate temperature of 10°C (in LTS, LTSND and LTSN treatments), regardless of air temperature. The occurrence of cold night and/or its combination with low substrate temperature caused accumulation of starch in leaves. When considering carbohydrate concentrations in stems and roots, it was not possible to establish a clear response pattern to chilling. In conclusion, the low substrate temperature causes a greater reduction of CO2 assimilation in citrus plants as compared to the occurrence of low air temperature, being such response a consequence of diffusive and biochemical limitations. and C. Two clones of Hevea brasiliensis (RRII 105 and PB 235) were grown for one year in two distinct agroclimatic locations (warmer and colder, W and C) in peninsular India. We simultaneously measured gas exchange and chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence on fully mature intact leaves at different photosynthetic photon flux densities (PPFDs) and ambient CO2 concentrations (Ca) and at constant ambient O2 concentration (21 %). Net photosynthetic rate (PN), apparent quantum yield for CO2 assimilation (Φc), in vivo carboxylation efficiency (CE), and photosystem 2 quantum yield (ΦPS2) were low in plants grown in C climate and these reductions were more predominant in RRII 105 than in PB 235 which was also reflected in their growth. We estimated in these clones the partitioning of photosynthetic electrons between CO2 reduction (JA) and processes other than CO2 reduction (J*) at low and high PPFDs and Ca. At high Ca (700 µmol mol-1) most of the photosynthetic electrons were used for CO2 assimilation and negligible amount went for other processes when PPFD was low (200-300 µmol m-2 s-1) both in the C and W climates. But at high PPFD (900-1 100 µmol m-2 s-1), J* was appreciably high even at a high Ca. Hence at normal ambient Ca and high irradiance, electrons can be generated in the photosynthetic apparatus far in excess of what can be safely utilised for photosynthetic CO2 reduction. However, at high Ca there was increased diversion of electrons to photosynthetic CO2 reduction which resulted in improved photosynthetic parameters even in plants grown in C climate. and B. Alam, D. Plants of Nicotiana benthamiana (Gray) (60 d old) were mechanically inoculated by a spreading of the fourth and fifth leaves with inoculum with or without plum pox potyvirus (PPV). Changes in growth parameters and selected photosynthetic characteristics were followed in control and inoculated plants in the locally affected leaves (LA) during 11 d after inoculation (DAI), in systemically affected leaves immature at time of inoculation (SAI) during 14-25 DAI, and in systemically affected leaves developed after the inoculation (SAD) during 28-39 DAI. The pure mechanical damage caused by inoculation induced a decrease in the net photosynthetic rate (PN) in LA and SAD leaves, and an increase in the steady-state value of the non-photochemical chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence quenching qN. The qN increase appeared in certain time intervals in all measured leaves on plants, so it could be regarded as indication of a systemic reaction of plant to the local mechanical injury. The viral infection developed in LA leaves and spread to SAI and SAD leaves was documented by the ELISA-DASI method. The plant height and area of SAI and SAD leaves were lower in infected plants. The combined effect of mechanical damage and viral infection caused a decrease in PN only in LA and SAD leaves. In SAD leaves, an increased relative height of the J step (VJ) in the O-J-I-P Chl fluorescence transient together with a lower B/A band ratio of thermoluminescence glow curves reflected a damage to the acceptor side of photosystem 2 (PS2) caused by the viral infection, and a faster kinetics of the induction of the photochemical quenching coefficient qP of Chl fluorescence indicated a faster QA- re-oxidation in the remaining undamaged centres of PS2. and V. Effect of drought on the mechanisms of energy dissipation was evaluated in two-month-old Arachis hypogaea cvs. 57-422, 73-30, and GC 8-35. Plants were submitted to three treatments: control (C), mild water stress (S1), and severe water stress (S2). Photosynthetic performance was evaluated as the Hill and Mehler reactions. These activities were correlated with the contents of the low and high potential forms of cytochrome (cyt) b 559, plastoquinone, cyt b 563, and cyt f. Additionally, the patterns of carotenoids and chlorophylls (Chls), as well as the alterations of Chl a fluorescence parameters were studied. Under mild water stress the regulatory mechanism at the antennae level was effective for 57-422 and GC 8-35, while in the cv. 73-30 an overcharge of photosynthetic apparatus occurred. Relative to this cv., under S1 the stability of carotene and the dissipative cycle around photosystem (PS) 2 became an important factor for the effective protection of the PS2 reaction centres. The cyclic electron flow around PS1 was important for energy dissipation under S1 only for the cvs. 57-422 and 73-30. and J. A. Lauriano ... [et al.].
Super-rice hybrids are two-line hybrid rice cultivars with 15 to 20 % higher yields than the raditional three-line hybrid rice cultivars. Response of photosynthetic functions to midday photoinhibition was compared between seedlings of the traditional hybrid rice (Oryza sativa L.) Shanyou63 and two super-rice hybrids, Hua-an3 and Liangyoupeijiu. Under strong midday sunlight, in comparison with Shanyou63, the two super-rice hybrids were less photoinhibited, as indicated by the lower loss of the net photosynthetic rate (PN), the quantum yield of photosystem 2 (ΦPS2), and the maximum and effective quantum yield of PS2 photochemistry (Fv/Fm and Fv'/Fm'). They also had a much higher transpiration rate. Hence the super-rice hybrids could protect themselves against midday photoinhibition at the cost of water. The photoprotective de-epoxidized xanthophyll cycle components, antheraxanthin (A) and zeaxanthin (Z), were accumulated more in Hua-an3 and Liangyoupeijiu than in Shanyou63, but the size of xanthophyll cycle pool of the seedlings was not affected by midday photoinhibition. Compared to Shanyou63, the super-rice hybrids were better photoprotected under natural high irradiance stress and the accumulation of Z and A, not the size of the xanthophyll pool protected the rice hybrids against photoinhibition. and Q. We developed transgenic rice plants (Oryza sativa L. cv. Daeribbyeo) overproducing cytosolic glutathione reductase (GR) using a GR gene from Brassica campestris and studied their response to photo-oxidative stress in the presence of methyl viologen (MV, 10 and 50 μM concentrations) under room (25 °C) and moderately elevated (35 °C) temperature by analysis of chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence parameters (FV/FM, qN, and qP) and of Chl content. Elevated temperature enhanced and accelerated the photo-oxidative damage to photosynthetic apparatus expressed mainly by a fast decrease of qN. Higher temperature supported the protective reaction in transformed rice plants for lower MV concentration (10 μM) and eliminated the enhanced tolerance of photosystem 2 photochemistry to photooxidative stress for higher (50 μM) MV concentration. Different mechanisms and temperature dependence of oxidative and protective reactions explain the results. and R. Kouřil ... [et al.].
Chlorophyll fluorescence measurements showed that plasticity to salinity in stems of Salicornia ramosissima is expressed at a modular level, so intraplant variation should be considered in further studies. and S. Redondo-Gómez ... [et al.].
We investigated the effect of moderate Cu2+ and Cd2+ stress by applying chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence and P700 absorbance measurements to monitor the photosynthetic electron transport activity of 3-week-old Pisum sativum L. cv. Petit Provençal plants grown in a modified Hoagland solution containing 50 μM CuSO4 or 5 μM CdCl2. Both heavy metals caused a slight inhibition in PSII photochemistry as indicated by the decrease in the effective quantum efficiency of PSII (ΦPSII), the maximum electron transport capacity (ETRmax), and the maximum quantum yield for electron transport (α). PSI photochemistry was also affected by these heavy metals. Cu2+ and Cd2+ decreased the quantum efficiency of PSI (ΦPSI) as well as the number of electrons in the intersystem chain, and the Cu2+ treatment significantly reduced the number of electrons from stromal donors available for PSI. These results indicate that PSII and PSI photochemistry of pea plants are both sensitive to moderate Cu2+ and Cd2+ stress, which in turn is easily detected and monitored by Chl fluorescence and P700 absorbance measurements. Therefore, monitoring the photochemistry of pea plants with these noninvasive, yet sensitive techniques offers a promising strategy to study heavy metal toxicity in the environment., B. Wodala ...
