Plant growth, chlorophyll (Chl) content, photosynthetic gas exchange, ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (RuBPCO) enzyme activity, and Chl fluorescence in radish (Raphanus sativus var. longipinnatus) plants were examined after turnip mosaic virus (TuMV) infection. Plant fresh mass, dry mass, Chl content, net photosynthetic rate (PN), transpiration rate (E), stomatal conductance (gs), and RuBPCO activity were significantly lower in infected plants after 5 weeks of virus infection as compared to healthy plants. The 5-week virus infection did not induce significant differences in intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci, photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2, PS2 (Fv/Fm), excitation capture efficiency of open PS2 reaction centres (Fv'/Fm'), effective quantum efficiency of photosystem 2 (ΔF/Fm'), and photochemical quenching (qP), but non-photochemical quenching (qN) and alternative electron sink (AES) were significantly enhanced. Sargassum fusiforme, a species of brown seaweed with economic importance, inhabits lower intertidal zones where algae are often exposed to various stresses. In this study, changes in the photosynthetic performance of S. fusiforme under saline stress were investigated. The PSII performance in S. fusiforme significantly improved, when the thalli were exposed to 0% salinity, and remained high with prolonging treatment time. In contrast, the PSII activity declined considerably under salinities of 4.5 and 6%. The PSI activity did not change remarkably under saline stress, thus demonstrating higher tolerance to saline stress than PSII. In addition, the PSI activity could be also restored after saline treatments, when PSII was inhibited by 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea. It might be as a result of changes in the NAD(P)H content in the thalli under saline stress. Our results suggested that PSI was much more tolerant to different saline stress than PSII in S. fusiforme. Photosynthetic utilization of radiant energy was studied by chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence and maximum photosynthetic O2 evolution (Pmax) in temperate lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) grown under natural tropical fluctuating ambient temperatures but with their roots exposed to two different root-zone temperatures (RZTs): a constant 20 °C-RZT (RZT20) and a fluctuating ambient RZT (RZTa) from 23 to 40 °C. On a sunny day, irrespective of RZT, ΔF/Fm' [ratio of the variable to maximal fluorescence under irradiation (the maximal photosystem 2 quantum yield with "actinic light")] decreased and non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) increased parallel to the increase of photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD). However, RZTa plants showed lower ΔF/Fm' and higher NPQ than RZT20 plants. The electron transport rate (ETR) was much higher in RZT20 plants than in RZTa plants especially during moderately sunny days. There were no significant diurnal changes in Pmax although these values of RZT20 plants were much higher than those of RZTa plants. On cloudy days, no significant diurnal changes in ΔF/Fm' and NPQ occurred, but ΔF/Fm' was higher and NPQ was lower in RZT20 plants than in RZTa plants. Diurnal changes in ETR were also observed in all plants while Pmax values throughout the whole cloudy days in both RZT20 and RZTa plants were constant. Again, RZT20 plants had much higher values of Pmax than RZTa plants. During RZT transfer period, all Chl fluorescence parameters measured at midday fluctuated with PPFD. Impact of RZT on these parameters was observed 2-3 d after RZT transfer. ETR and Pmax measured with saturating PPFD in the laboratory did not vary with the fluctuating PPFD in the greenhouse but the effects of RZT on these two parameters were observed 3-4 d after RZT transfer. Citrus volkameriana (L.) plants were grown for 43 d in nutrient solutions containing 0, 2, 14, 98, or 686 µM Mn (Mn0, Mn2, Mn14, Mn98, and Mn686, respectively). To adequately investigate the combined effects of Mn nutrition and irradiance on photosystem 2 (PS2) activity, irradiance response curves for electron transport rate (ETR), nonphotochemical quenching (qN), photochemical quenching (qP), and real photochemical efficiency of PS2 (ΦPS2) were recorded under 10 different irradiances (66, 96, 136, 226, 336, 536, 811, 1 211, 1 911, and 3 111 µmol m-2 s-1, I66 to I3111, respectively) generated with the PAM-2000 fluorometer. Leaf chlorophyll content was significantly lower under Mn excess (Mn686) compared to Mn0; its highest values were recorded in the treatments Mn2-Mn98. However, ETR and ΦPS2 values were significantly lower under Mn0 compared to the other Mn treatments, when plants were exposed to irradiances ≥96 µmol m-2 s-1. Furthermore, Mn0 plants had significantly higher values of qN and lower values of qP at irradiances ≤226 and ≥336 µmol m-2 s-1, respectively, than those grown under Mn2-Mn686. Irrespective of Mn treatment, the values of ΦPS2 and qN decreased, while those of qP increased progressively by increasing irradiance from I136 to I3111. Finally, Mn2-Mn98 plants were less sensitive to photoinhibition of photosynthesis (≥811 µmol m-2 s-1) than the Mn686 (≥536 µmol m-2 s-1) and Mn0 (≥336 µmol m-2 s-1) ones. and I. E. Papadakis ... Changes in various components of photosynthetic apparatus during the 6-d dark incubation at 25 °C of detached control and DCMU-treated Triticum aestivum L. leaves were examined. The rate of photosystem 2 (PS2) activity was decreased with increase of the time of dark incubation in control leaves. In contrast to this, DCMU-treated leaves demonstrated high stability by slowing down the inactivation processes. Diphenyl carbazide and NH2OH restored the PS2 activity more in control leaves than in DCMU-treated leaves. Mn2+ failed to restore the PS2 activity in both control and DCMU-treated samples. Similar results were obtained when Fv/Fm was evaluated by chlorophyll fluorescence measurements. The marked loss of PS2 activity in dark incubated control leaves was primarily due to the loss of D1, 33, and 23 kDa extrinsic polypeptides and 28-25 kDa LHCP2 polypeptides. and N. Nedunchezhian, K. The distribution of rare earth elements (REEs) in the fern Dicranopteris dichotoma Bernh plants from a light rare earth elements mine (LRM) and a non-mining (NM) area in Longnan county of Jiangxi province, China were investigated by means of inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, transmission electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis. The photosynthetic characteristics of D. dichotoma were studied by chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence kinetics. Contents of REEs in the lamina and the root of D. dichotoma were higher than those in soils, and were mainly distributed in lamina. A part of them was found in the chloroplast. By comparing with D. dichotoma from NM area, the efficiency of photosystem 2 photochemistry and electron transport rate were significantly enhanced in lamina of the plant from LRM because most of REEs deposits were distributed along cell wall, in vacuole, and in chloroplast. High contents of REEs in lamina did not decrease the photosynthetic activities in LRM plants of D. dichotoma. Glaucium flavum is a biennial plant that bears a rosette of leaves, producing a flower stalk, bracteate monochasium, in its second year. The aims of this work were both to investigate the contribution of bracts to gas-exchange activities in this species and to compare this contribution to that of rosette leaves. In addition, we investigated the extent to which its responses can be explained by chloroplast ultrastructure, as well as the possible role of nutrient concentrations in the physiological responses of both leaf types. Gas exchange and plant characteristics regarding chlorophyll fluorescence were examined in a field experiment; we also determined leaf relative water content, tissue concentrations of photosynthetic pigments, chloroplast ultrastructure and nutrient contents. Although bracts indeed contributed to gas-exchange activities of G. flavum, rosette leaves showed higher values of net photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance to CO2 for photosynthetic photon flux density above 200 μmol m-2 s-1. The incongruities in photosynthetic rates between bracts and leaves may be explained by the bigger chloroplasts of rosette leaves, which results in a larger membrane surface area. This agrees with the higher pigment concentrations and quantum efficiency of photosystem II values recorded as well for rosette leaves. In the present study, the physiological efficiencies of 181 mini-core peanut accessions (genotypes) were evaluated according to variability in their physiological performance in the field during summer (2012). Genotypes were categorized into groups of high, medium, and low physiological activity. Thirty-four genotypes showed high net photosynthetic rate (PN > 33 μmol m-2 s-1), 28 genotypes exhibited high stomatal conductance (gs > 0.54 mmol m-2 s-1), 33 genotypes manifested high transpiration rate (E > 11.8 mmol m-2 s-1), 30 genotypes performed with high water-use efficiency (WUE > 3.8), 30 genotypes reached high chlorophyll SPAD values (SCMR > 40), and 35 genotypes showed high maximum quantum yield of PSII (Fv/Fm > 0.86). In addition, few genotypes showed high values for multiple physiological traits. A total of 54 genotypes exhibited higher values in two, 20 genotypes showed a high value in three, and in eight genotypes, high values occurred in four different physiological traits. Interestingly, only two genotypes, NRCG 14493 and 14507, showed high values for five different traits. Positive correlation was observed between gs and PN, E, and gs, and between PN and Fv/Fm, while WUE and E showed a negative correlation. In order to evaluate the combined effects of simulated acid rain (SAR) and salinity on the physiological responses of macroalgae, Ulva prolifera was cultured under three salinity treatments (5, 10,
25‰) and at different pH, i.e., at pH 4.4 (C), pH 4.4(F), where the pH of the culture increased from 4.4 to approximately 7.8 during the cultivation period, or in absence of SAR at pH 8.2(C), at 100 μmol(photon) m-2 s-1 and 20°C. Compared to 25‰ salinity, Relative growth rate (RGR) of U. prolifera was enhanced by 10‰ salinity, but decreased by 5‰ salinity. No significant differences in RGR were observed between the pH 8.2(C) and pH 4.4(F) treatments, but the chlorophyll a content was reduced by SAR. Negative effects of SAR on the photosynthesis were observed, especially under low salinity treatments. Macroalgae must be able to survive in conditions of different light intensities with no damage to their physiological performance or vital processes. Irradiance can stimulate the biosynthesis of certain photoprotective compounds of biotechnological interest, such as pigments and proteins. Pterocladiella capillacea is a shade-grown alga, which play a role key in the balance of marine ecosystems. In addition, it is considered one of the best sources of bacteriological agar and agarose with a wide pharmacological potential. In order to evaluate the photosensitivity in P. capillacea under 60 (control) and moderate light intensity of 300 μmol(photon) m-2 s-1, photosynthetic performance and chemical composition were assessed. P. capillacea showed photosensitivity without evidence of photodamage. The results indicate the possibility to increase a growth rate and probably infer productivity in long-term cultivation by stimulation at moderate light intensity.
