Interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) are the pacemaker cells in the gut. They have special properties that make them unique in their ability to generate and propagate slow waves in gastrointestinal muscles. The electrical slow wave activity determines the characteristic frequency of phasic contractions of the stomach, intestine and colon. Slow waves also determine the direction and velocity of propagation of peristaltic activity, in concert with the enteric nervous system. Characterization of receptors and ion channels in the ICC membrane is under way, and manipulation of slow wave activity markedly alters the movement of contents through the gut. Cytarabine is one of the most efficient drugs in the treatment of hematological malignancies. In this work, we describe the synthesis and characterization of two different polymer conjugates of cytarabine that were designed for the controlled release of cytarabine within the leukemia cells. Reactive copolymers of N-(2-hydroxypropyl)methacrylamide (HPMA) and 3-(3-methacrylamidopropanoyl)thiazolidine-2-thione) or 3-(Nmethacryloylglycyl- phenylalanylleucylglycyl)thiazolidine-2-thione were used in the study as reactive polymer precursors for reaction with cytarabine. The enzymatic release of cytarabine from the conjugate containing a GFLG spacer utilizing cathepsin B was verified. In addition to enzymolysis, the pH-dependent hydrolysis of cytarabine from both copolymers was also confirmed. Approximately 40 % and 20 % of the drug was released by spontaneous hydrolysis at pH 7.4 within 72 h from the polymer conjugates with the GFLG and β-Ala spacers, respectively. At pH 6.0, the spontaneous hydrolysis slowed down, and less than 10 % of the drug was liberated within 72 h. The results of the cytotoxicity evaluation of the polymer conjugates in vitro against various cell lines showed that the cytotoxicity of the polymer conjugates is approximately three times lower in comparison to free cytarabine., R. a1_The genes that cause or increase susceptibility to essential hypertension (EH) and related an imal models remain unknown. Their identification is unlikely to be realized with current genetic approaches, because of ambiguities in the genotype-phenotype relationships in these polygenic disorders. In turn, the phenotype is not just an aggregate of traits, but needs to be related to specific components of the circulatory control system at different stages of EH. Hence, clues about important genes must come through the phenotype, reversing the order of current approaches. A recent systems analysis has highlighted major differences in circulatory control in the two main syndromes of EH: 1) stress-and-salt-related EH (SSR-EH) - a constrictor hypertension with low blood volume; 2) hypertensive obesity - SSR-EH plus obesity. Each is initiated through sensitization of central synapses linking the cerebral cortex to the hypothalamic defense area. Several mechanis ms are probably involved, including cerebellar effects on baroreflexes. The result is a sustained increase in sympathetic neural activity at stimulus levels that have no effect in normal subjects. Subsequent progression of EH is largely thro ugh interactions with non-neural mechanisms, including changes in concentration of vascular autacoids (e.g. nitric oxide) and the amplifying effect of structural changes in large resistance vessels. The rising vasoconstriction increases heterogeneity of blood flow, causing rarefaction (decreased microvascular densit y) and deterioration of vital organs. SSR-EH also increases food intake in response to stress, but only 40% of these individual s develop hypertensive obesity. The Chinese white pine beetle, Dendroctonus armandi Tsai and Li is a native species of bark beetle and one of the most destructive in much of western China. Little is known about the characterization of the pheromones trans-verbenol and verbenone, and their functions in D. armandi are unknown. Electroantennogram tests (EAG) and olfactory assays (Y-tube assays) in the laboratory revealed that (1) trans-verbenol may be an anti-aggregation pheromone for male and an aggregation pheromone for female D. armandi and (2) female beetles are more attracted to controls (hexane) than low concentrations of verbenone and male beetles more attracted to controls than high concentrations of verbenone. Field trials indicated that the addition of verbenone to bait used to trap D. armandi remarkably decreased the efficiency of field trapping. These results indicate that verbenone is an anti-aggregation pheromone for male D. armandi. This research provides evidence of the role of verbenone among the different types of pheromones. Field measurements of gas exchange were made using a portable infra-red gas analyser on six species of early-successional woody plants in Singapore. Macaranga heynei, Mallotus paniculatus and Trema tomentosa grow on relatively fertile soils. Adinandra dumosa, Uillenia suffruticosa and Melostoma malabalhricum are species typical of extremely acidic and infertile soils. The six species were similar in their photosynthetic responses to irradiance when net photosynthetic rate (P^) was expressed on a leaf area basis. However, when PN was converted to a rate per unit leaf dry mass, the fertile soil species showed higher rates of dark respiration and photosynthesis. No difference in water use efficiency between the two sets of species was found.
The effects of a high temperature on leaf photosynthetic response of Lupinus albus, a species native from the Mediterranean zone, were studied under varying tissue water status and irradiance (/). At leaf temperatures optimal (25 °C) or near-optimal (15 ®C) for carbon assimilation in lupins, photosynthetic capacity (P^) was decreased at leď relative water content (RWC) around 60 %. The temperature above the optimum (e g. 35 oC) decreased at high RWC (80 %). Irrespective of the leaf water status the optimum leaf temperature for in lupins was around 25 "C. The inhibition of P^ by lupin leaf discs at 35 °C was greatly enhanced at high I. Leaf disc treatment at 35 in the dark did not change quantum yield or Pn. When in addition to 35 the leaves were subjected to high I (TS + IS) or to high I and dehydration (TS + IS + WS), then a substantial decrease was observed in the quantum yield (66 and 77 % of the values in Controls, respectively) and in (31 and 56 %, respectively).
Ultrafast time resolved emission spectra were measured in whole cells of a PSI-deficient mutant of Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 at room temperature and at 77K to study excitation energy transfer and trapping. By means of a target analysis it was estimated that the terminal emitter of the phycobilisome, termed allophycocyanin 680, transfers its energy with a rate of (20 ps)-1 to PSII. Isoflavones are a subgroup of phytoestrogens, natural plant substances with structure similar to 17-β-estradiol and capable of binding to estrogen receptors (ERs). Isoflavones possess higher affinity to ERβ than to ERα and may have a potency to activate both genomic and non-genomic estrogen signaling pathways. In addition, isoflavones interact with the metabolism of steroid hormones. Therefore, the actions of isoflavones are rather complex and may be related to large number of factors, which are not satisfactorily identified yet. Recently, isoflavones have come into focus of interest due to several reports about their positive effect on human health, in particular prevention of hormone-dependent cancers, cardiovascular diseases, osteoporosis, adverse menopausal manifestations and agerelated cognitive decline. Tropical savanna ecosystems are extremely diverse and important for global carbon storage. In the state of Mato Grosso, tropical savanna (locally known as the Cerrado), turns from well-drained, upland areas into seasonally flooded areas within the Pantanal; however, the Cerrado and the Pantanal share many common tree species, such as Vochysia divergens, a flood-adapted tree native to the Amazon Basin, and Curatella americana, a tree, adapted native to the welldrained the Cerrado. We measured the photosynthetic light response of these species in the the Cerrado and the Pantanal over a 1-year period to determine how these species physiologically adjust to these hydrologically distinct habitats. We hypothesized that neither species would experience a significant decline in maximum, light-saturated photosynthetic rate (Pmax) in their naturalized habitat. Physiological performance of each species was generally higher in the habitat that they were adapted to; however, our data indicated that both species have broad tolerance for seasonal variations in hydrology, allowing them to tolerate seasonal drought during the dry season in the Cerrado, and seasonal flooding during the wet season in the Pantanal. In V. divergens, flexible water-use efficiency, higher specific leaf area (SLA), and a greater ability to adjust mass-based Pmax (Pmax,m) to variations in leaf N and P concentration appeared to be key traits for withstanding prolonged drought in the Cerrado. In C. americana, increases in SLA and higher nutrient-use efficiency appeared to be important in maintaining high rates of Pmax,m in the seasonally flooded Pantanal.
