During a 5-20 d growth at moderate salinity (7 dS m‘i) in rice seedlings of salt sensitive cultivars Ratna and Jaya a larger decrease in chlorophyll (Chl) a and b contents was observed than in tolerant cvs. CSR-1 and CSR-3. At higher salinity (14 dS m'i) about 40 % declines in both whole chain electron transport and photosystem (PS) 2 activities were observed in the tolerant cvs. and about 62 to 67 % declines in the sensitive ones. No apparent change in PSI activity was observed due to salinization in the both sets of cultivars. Higher rate of Hill reaction was observed in chloroplasts ffom salt stressed seedlings of tolerant cultivars whereas inhibition in this activity was found in the sensitive ones. Chloroplasts isolated from stressed seedlings of sensitive cultivars showed about 31 % reduction in fluorescence emission at 685 nm as well as a major decrease in absorption with shifts in peaks in the visible region of spectrum. Thus salt sensitivity in rice is associated with decreased contents of Chls and carotenoids, PS2 and Hill reaction activities, and fluorescence emission.
The effects of NaCl (200 mM) and osmotic stress generated by polyethylene glycol (PEG) on PSII maximal quantum efficiency, photosynthetic CO2/H2O gas exchange at two CO2 concentrations, content of chlorophyll, proline, and malondialdehyde were investigated in shoots of C4 xerohalophyte Haloxylon aphyllum (Chenopodiaceae). The PEG treatment induced a low water osmotic potential (-0.4 MPa) and inhibited photosynthesis (by a factor of 2) and transpiration (by a factor of 4). The NaCl treatment, at equal osmoticity conditions, reduced transpiration (by a factor of 2) and stimulated photosynthesis (by a factor of 2.5). Only the
PEG-treated plants showed osmotic stress effects, which were demonstrated by an increase in proline and malondialdehyde contents in the shoot tissue. The data indicated that the halophilic character of this species was essential for maintaining the plant water status and photosynthesis under osmoticity induced by NaCl treatment. In order to understand the physiological traits important in conferring salt tolerance in three barley genotypes, this study was performed under field conditions with three water salinity levels (2, 10, and 18 dS m-1). High salinity decreased net photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, and stomatal conductance, K+ concentration, K+:Na+ ratio, and grain yield, but increased electrolyte leakage and Na+ content. Under 10 and 18 dS m-1 salinity, Khatam (salt-tolerant) had the maximum stomatal conductance, K+, K+:Na+ ratio, and the grain yield, and a minimum Na+ content and electrolyte leakage, whereas Morocco (salt-sensitive) had the lowest net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, K+ content, K+:Na+ ratio, and grain yield, and the highest Na+ content and electrolyte leakage. a1_We investigated the influence of salinity (0, 25, 50, or 75 mM NaCl) on gas exchange and physiological characteristics of nine citrus rootstocks (Cleopatra mandarin, Carrizo citrange, Macrophylla, Iranian mandarin Bakraii, Rangpur lime, Rough lemon, Sour orange, Swingle citrumelo, and Trifoliate orange) in a greenhouse experiment. Total plant dry mass, total chlorophyll (Chl) content, and gas-exchange variables, such as net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (g s), intercellular CO2 concentration, were negatively affected by salinity. In addition, ion concentrations of Cl- and Na+ increased by salinity treatments. Salinity also increased Mg2+ content in roots and reduced Ca2+ and Mg2+ concentrations in leaves. The K+ concentration in leaves was enhanced at low salinity (25 mM NaCl), whereas it decreased with increasing salinity stress. We investigated the effects of supplementary KNO3 and NaCl on one-year-old, potted Valencia orange (Citrus sinensis) scions grafted on Iranian mandarin Bakraii [Citrus reticulate × Citrus limetta] (Valencia/Bakraii) and Carrizo citrange [C. sinensis × Poncirus trifoliata] (Valencia/Carrizo) rootstocks. After watering plants for 60 days with 50 mM NaCl, the lowest reduction in dry mass, stomatal conductance, and chlorophyll (Chl) content was found in Valencia/Bakraii. Bakraii accumulated more Cl- and Na+ in roots and transferred less to Valencia leaves compared with Carrizo rootstock. Moreover, higher net photosynthetic rate was found in Valencia/Bakraii than those on Carrizo rootstock. NaCl caused a decrease in the maximal efficiency of PSII photochemistry (Fv/Fm) and effective quantum yield (ΦPSII) but elevated coefficient of nonphotochemical quenching. Salinity reduced Ca2+, Mg2+, and total N contents, and increased Na+/K+ ratio in leaves and roots of both grafting combinations. Salinity increased K+ and proline content in leaves and decreased K+ concentrations in roots of both grafting combinations. In salinized plants, nitrate supplementation (10 mM KNO3) reduced leaf abscission, Cl-, Na+, Na+/K+, and Ca2+ concentrations in leaves and roots of both combinations. K+ and N concentrations and proline increased in leaves of the nitrate-supplemented salinized plants. Supplementary nitrate increased leaf number and area, stem elongation, Chl content, Fv/Fm, and ΦPSII and stimulated photosynthetic activity. A hydroponic, greenhouse experiment was conducted to assess the effects of NaCl on growth, gas-exchange parameters, chlorophyll (Chl) content, and ion distribution in seven sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) genotypes (Ardestan, Varamin, Naz-Takshakhe, Naz-Chandshakhe, Oltan, Yekta, Darab). The plants were grown in 4-L containers and subjected to varying levels of salinity (0, 30, and 60 mM NaCl). After 42 days, salt treatments induced decreases of plant fresh and dry mass, total leaf area, and plant height in all genotypes. Increasing NaCl concentration caused significant, genotypedependent decrease in the net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, Chl content, and maximum quantum efficiency of photosystem II, while it increased the intercellular CO2 concentration. Based on the dry matter accumulation under salinity, the genotypes were categorized in two groups, i.e., salt-tolerant and salt-sensitive. The impact of salt on plant ion concentrations differed significantly among the sesame genotypes and between both two groups. The plant Na+ concentrations were significantly lower in Ardestan, Darab, and Varamin genotypes than those found in the remaining genotypes. The highest plant K+ and Ca2+ concentrations together with the lowest Na+/K+ and Na+/Ca2+ ratios were observed in Ardestan, Varamin, and Darab genotypes. Our results indicated the presence of differences in salt response among seven sesame genotypes. In this study, the effects of lanthanum were investigated on contents of pigments, chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence, antioxidative enzymes, and biomass of maize seedlings under salt stress. The results showed that salt stress significantly decreased the contents of Chl and carotenoids, maximum photochemical efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm), photochemical quenching (qP), and quantum efficiency of PSII photochemistry (ΦPSII), net photosynthetic rate (P N), and biomass. Salt stress increased nonphotochemical quenching (qN), the activities of ascorbate peroxidase, catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and the contents of malondialdehyde and hydrogen peroxide compared with control. Pretreatment with lanthanum prior to salt stress significantly enhanced the contents of Chl and carotenoids, Fv/Fm, qP, qN, ΦPSII, P N, biomass, and activities of the above antioxidant enzymes compared with the salt-stressed plants. Pretreatment with lanthanum also significantly reduced the contents of malondialdehyde and hydrogen peroxide induced by salt stress. Photosynthesis has walked into the path of evolution for over millions of years. Organisms relying directly on photosynthesis, when subjected to adverse environments for a long duration, experience retardation in their growth and development. Salinity stress is perceived as one of the major threats to agriculture as it can cause an irreversible damage to the photosynthetic apparatus at any developmental stage of the plant. However, halophytes, a special category of plants, carry out all life processes, including photosynthesis, without showing any compromise even under high saline environments. Salt stress causes extensive losses to agricultural crops, including wheat, throughout the world and has been the focus of wide research. Though, information is scarce on the potential of ancient wheat relatives in tackling this major limiting factor. Thus, six hulled tetraploid wheat genotypes (HW) were compared to a
free-threshing durum wheat genotype (FTW) under different NaCl concentrations, ranging from 0 to 150 mM, at early growth stages in a sand culture experiment. Salt stress induced significant declines in the leaf chlorophyll (Chl) a, Chl b, total Chl, and carotentoid contents; the extent of the declines was greater in FTW compared to HW. Mean leaf proline (3.6-fold) and Na+ (1.58-fold) concentrations and Na+/K+ (2.48-fold) drastically increased with 150 mM of NaCl; the magnitude of the increases was greater in HW compared to FTW. While the carotenoids concentration decreased with progressive salinity both in HW and FTW, the activities of antioxidant enzymes, i.e., catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, and peroxidase were reduced in FTW, but remained unchanged in HW. The above responses to 150 mM NaCl were associated with a significant decrease in shoot dry mass of FTW and lack of significant changes in that of HW. We examined the physiological and biochemical responses of two halophytic grasses with different photosynthetic pathways, Puccinellia tenuiflora (C3) and Chloris virgata (C4), to saline-alkaline stresses. Plants were grown at different Na2CO3 concentrations (from 0 to 200 mM). Low Na2CO3 (< 12.5 mM) enhanced seed germination and plant growth, whereas high Na2CO3 concentrations (> 100 mM) reduced seed germination by 45% in P. tenuiflora and by 30% in C. virgata. Compared to C. virgata, P. tenuiflora showed lower net photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, intercellular CO2 concentration, and water-use efficiency under the same treatment. C. virgata exhibited also relatively higher ATP content, K+ concentration, and the K+/Na+ ratio under the stress treatments implying that salt tolerance may be the main mechanism for salt resistance in this species. Our results demonstrated that the C. virgata was relatively more resistant to saline-alkaline stress than the co-occurring P. tenuiflora; both two species adapt to their native saline-alkaline habitat by different physiological mechanisms., C.
