This article is concerned with changes in the tourist industry and travel abroad by Czechoslovaks and, after late 1989, Czechs as a particular expression of the political, economic, and socio-cultural transformation of that period, incuding the ''return to Europe''. The structure of the article is based roughly on the basic groups of questions, which concern tourism abroad. The author first describes in broad outline the political and legislative processes of the gradual lifting of visa restrictions by the Czechoslovak authorities and the states of western Europe as well as the gradual liberalization and partial ''denationalization'' of Czechoslovak currency policy and paperwork related to tourism. He then, in the second part, looks at the continuities and discontinuities of the forms of the tourist industry, particularly the transformation of the existing travel agencies (under the former Čedok monopoly) and the massive emergence of new travel agencies, as well as their rise and fall (for instance, Fischer Reisen, the travel agency of Václav Fischer). In combination with the history of travel-industry policy, the result seeks to be a contribution to the economic history of the country after the Changes of late 1989. In the third part of the article, the author traces the countries to which Czechoslovak, and later, Czech citizens travelled and in what number, and what their typical reasons were, from the beginning of the 1990s onwards. His analysis of the accessible quantitative data is followed by his interpretations of oral-history research intended, among other things, to discover the forms that travel abroad took after November 1989, how the participants perceived this travel, and what importance they attached to it., Pavel Mücke., and Obsahuje bibliografii a bibliografické odkazy
Výsledný portrét Miloše Havla pokládá recenzent také za příliš empatický a málo kritický., Miloš Havel (1899-1968) was the most prominent film industry entrepreneur of the inter-war Czechoslovakia, and the uncle of dissident-turned-President Václav Havel (1936-2011). The reviewed publication Miloš Havel: The Czech movie tycoon is his first biography and the authoress intent was to depict his career and private life, particularly with a view to his status as a gay in the society at that time, relations and alleged collaboration with German authorities in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, of which he was accused after the war, and Havel´s life as an émigré in Munich after 1952. The publications aims at a broad audience, and thus cannot be judged using criteria of film history; still, the reviewer regrets that the capture of the fate of the chief protagonist and other characters lacks a broader historical context. In his opinion, the amount of information the authoress collected in contemporaries is more admirable than the manner in which she treats it. It is true that she generally sticks to verified facts, but she prefers attractive episodes and colourful details to asking more poignant questions of undertaking a deeper analysis. The reviewer also views the resulting portrayal of Miloš Havel as overly emphatic and not critical enough., [autor recenze] Martin Šrajer., and Obsahuje bibliografii a bibliografické odkazy
Vždy ho zajímaly osudy obyčejných lidí, jejichž životní příběhy dokázal zajímavě a originálně zasadit do obecnějšího rámce „velkých“ dějin. Z půldruhé desítky dokumentárních filmů, které připravil jako scenárista a moderátor, měl mimořádný ohlas především Zločin jménem Katyň, který získal řadu cen na mezinárodních festivalech., b1_The author looks back at the career of the historian Mečislav Borák (b. 1945) on the occasion of his seventieth birthday, and discusses a large selection of his publications. He emphasizes Borák’s well-rooted regional interests in Těšínsko (Cieszyn Silesia, Těšín Silesia, or Teschen Silesia) and Czech Silesia, which, however, Borák has successfully moved beyond to precisely include the Czechoslovak and international context, as well as linking together micro- and macrohistory. He has always been interested in ordinary people, whose life stories he has put into the larger framework of ‘big’ history in an interesting and original way. He has repeatedly returned to topics that have interested him, each time coming up with new facts and views, allowing him to review and expand previous conclusions, and to add considerably to our knowledge of these histories. Before the Changes of late 1989, Borák focused on topics of the German occupation and the resistance to it. Later, he expanded his areas of interest to include research on acts of political oppression against the people of Czechoslovakia and, more broadly, central and eastern Europe, from the late 1930s to the mid-1950s. He was a pioneer in research on the courts of retribution. A distinctive area of his research was his work on the history of the Shoah and various forms of persecution of the Jews. Another of his later key topics was the Katyn massacre and its victims from the Bohemian Lands. From here Borák proceeded to search for, record, and make sense of cases of the political persecution of Czechs and Slovaks in the Soviet Union. His most recent field of research is the Polish minority and inter-ethnic relations in the context of Czechoslovak-Polish and Czech-Polish contemporary history., b2_His academic career has long been connected with the University of Ostrava, the University of Silesia in Opava, the Silesian Museum, also in Opava, and the Institute of Contemporary History, in Prague. Professor Borák has published two dozen specialist books and more than 150 articles. He has participated in at least three dozen research projects, worked extensively as an editor, expert, and consultant, and also written works of journalism and popular history. Of the more than a dozen documentary films he has worked on as a screen-writer and narrator, the film Zločin jménem Katyň (A Crime Called Katyn), was particularly well received, and won a number of prizes at international film festivals., and Dušan Janák.
Monografie navazuje na předešlou Kopečkovu práci Éra nevinnosti: Česká politika 1989-1997 (Brno, Barrister & Principal 2010) a pojednává o okolnostech a důsledcích takzvané opoziční smlouvy, kterou po volbách v roce 1998 uzavřely dvě největší české politické strany - sociální demokracie pod vedením Miloše Zemana a Občanská demokratická strana v čele s Václavem Klausem - o podmínkách tolerance Zemanovy vlády Klausovou opozicí. Přes až přílišnou závislost na žurnalistických pramenech představuje Deformace demokracie? podle recenzenta spolu s autorovou předešlou publikací základní syntézu o českém politickém vývoji po pádu komunistického režimu., The publication under review, whose title translates as "A deformation of democracy? The opposition agreement and Czech politics, 1998-2002", follows on from Kopeček´s Éra nevinnosti: Česká politika 1989-1997 (The age of innocence. Czech politics 1989-97, Brno: Barrister a. Principal, 2010). It is concerned with the circumstances and consequences of what was popularly known as the Opposition Agreement, which, after the general elections of 1998, was signed by the two largest Czech political parties - the Social Democratic Party, led by Miloš Zeman (b. 1944), and the Civic Democratic Party, led by Václav Klaus (b. 1941) - and concerns the terms and conditions under which the Klaus-led opposition would tolerate the Zeman-led government. The focus of this political-science interpretation is not only the main actors of the agreement but also the large opposition to it. The latter ultimately succeeded in preventing the pact from leading to a system run by only two parties. Despite its excessive dependence on journalistic sources, the publication, according to the reviewer, constitutes, together with the author´s preceding volume, a fundamental work on Czech political developments since the collapse of the Communist regime., [autor recenze] Petr Roubal., and Obsahuje bibliografii a bibliografické odkazy
