Nakonec vyslovuje přesvědčení, že kniha Gottwaldovo Československo jako fašistický stát není nijak přínosná, nesplňuje parametry vědecké práce ani není relevantní k odborné diskusi., The author is highly critical of the book under discussion. He finds Placák´s very broad conception of Fascism problematic, it is, he writes, vague, with an ulterior motive, and unscholarly. Placák´s attempt in this book to describe political developments in post-war Czechoslovakia from May 1945 to late February 1948 fundamentally suffers, according to him, from an absence of research using primary sources and scholarly secondary literature on the topic. The style of argument tends, moreover, tobe based on capriciousness rather than on respect for the facts. The author illustrates these shortcomings in detail with sample passages in which Placák defends his argument about the antisemitic nature of Czechoslovak Communist Party policy in that period. He concludes that Gottwaldovo Československo jako fašistický stát (Gottwald´s Czechoslovakia as a fascist state) does not meet the basic standards of scholarly work, and is ultimately irrelevant to academic discussion., [autor recenze] Tomáš Hemza., Třetí ze 3 příspěvků v oddílu Tři hlasy o jedné knize: Konfrontace - kontrasty - kontexty, and Obsahuje bibliografické odkazy
Nedostatky spatřuje naopak v rezignaci na postižení širších souvislostí případu, v chybějící snaze o interpretaci událostí a v ignorování valné části existující literatury k tématu., The publication under review seeks to reconstruct the best-known case of politically motivated violence against representatives of the Czechoslovak Communist regime in the 1950s and its consequences. On 2 July 1951, in an attack by an armed group in the village of Babice in the Mohemian-Moravian Highlands, three officials of the local National Committee were shot dead. In the following months, in a series of show trials, more than a hundred people were tried and sentenced, eleven of whom were sentenced to death. In addition, a number of locals were forced to leave the village. The reviewer appreciates that the author has worked thoroughly with the facts of these events, while bearing in mind the contexts, and convincingly rebutting the traditional speculations about the armed attack having in fact been a provocation by the Communist secret police (StB), which sought to use a police crackdown to crush the local resistance to the Communist regime. Nevertheless, the book suffers, according to the reviewer, from the author´s having failed to take into account the broader context of the case, not interpreting events, and ignoring much of the literature on the topic., [autor recenze] Markéta Devátá., and Obsahuje bibliografii a bibliografické odkazy
Recenzent nejprve nastiňuje odbornou produkci věnovanou hudbě (především vážné) a hudební kultuře ve vztahu k politice a jejím institucím v Československu v období komunistického režimu. Přes dílčí kritické připomínky se práci dostává pozitivního hodnocení, zejména z faktografického hlediska., The reviewer first offers an overview of scholarly research on music (primarily serious music) and music culture in relation to politics and institutions in Czechoslovakia under the Communist régime. The author of the book under review, he claims, is one of the first Czechs to ask how and why a leading music ensemble could operate in totalitarianism and even in opposition to it. The core of book comprises the author´s discussion of the Czech Philharmonic durign the first decade after the Communist takeover in late February 1948, in the face of continuous efforts by the régime to keep an eye on the orchestra by means of Party institution and, particularly, the secret police. The author uses excursions into Czechoslovak life from the 1960s to the 1980s, and writers that the offorts to enlist Czech Philharmonic musicians to collaborate with the secret police were practically continuous throughout the period. She discusses the programme and production plans of the orchestra, in which the musicians had to accept comprises with the demands to perform ideologically engagé works. Despite some minor criticisms, the reviewer, on the whole, judges the book positively, particularly concerning the factual information it presents., [autor recenze] Václav Nájemník., and Obsahuje bibliografii a bibliografické odkazy
Recenzent komentuje zpracování těchto témat v jednotlivých kapitolách a oceňuje autorovu velkou erudici, bohaté využití pramenů i širokou kontextualizaci a přesvědčivost výkladu. Podle recenzenta by se Smetanova monografie, kterou charakterizuje jako pestré plátno dějinných zápletek napnuté v pevném rámu, měla stát pro historiky období druhé světové a počátků studené války klasickým dílem., Using selected topics, the monograph Neither war, nor peace: The powers, Czechoslovakia and Central Europe in seven dramas at the threshold of the Second World and Cold Wars describes the relationship of the powers to Czechoslovakia during the dramatic decade between 1938 and 1948. The reviewer comments on how these topics are dealt with in each chapter, appreciating the author´s erudition. ample use of sources, as well as the broad contextualization and convincing power of interpretation. He concludes, that Smetana´s work deviates from traditonal Cezch and Slovak approaches to the themes in that it assigns priority to attitudes and motives of foreign political players and takes into account the international context in all its complexity the analysis of which leads the author to conclusions open ot further discussion rahter than to categorical judgments. The author´s approach does not make the personality of President Edvard Beneš (1884-1948) stand out as much as is usually the case; instead, the author views President Beneš rather critically. According to the reviewer, Smetana´s smonograph, which he characterizes as a colourful canvas of historical plots stretched in a solid frame, should become a classical work for historians studying the period of the Second World War and beginnings of the Cold War., [autor recenze] Pavol Jakubec., and Obsahuje bibliografii a bibliografické odkazy
Nakonec autor sleduje, jak se tento urbanistický obrat střetával s praxí stavební výroby a politickou preferencí rychlé bytové výstavby., a1_Using the planning in Prague between the 1960s and 1980s as an example, the article deals with the transformation of the concept of a socialist city among urbanists and architects. The author describes how the generation of the inter-war modernist avant-garde inspired by works of Karel Teige (1900-1951) started reasserting itself again after Khrushchev´s speech on architecture in 1954. Its influential member, Jiří Voženílek (1909-1986), became the Chief Architect of Prague. It was under his leadership that the General Plan of the Capital City of Prague was drafted at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s. The author analyzes the plan as an example of the socialist modernism and urbanistic optimism of its creators who believed that, subject to a correct application of principles of inter-war avant-garde architecture, an urbanistic transformation might become the base of a social transformation of socialism. The plan envisaged sacrifing not only all residential quarters of Greater Prague built at the turn of the century, but also the very principle of a traditional city with a network of living streets which socialist urbanists saw as an incarnation of all evils that the development of towns and cities had thitherto been governed by: mixing of functions, too high density of population, lack of light and air. New housing projects comprising high-rise prefab residential buildings set in greenery were to become the opposite of traditional streets., a2_The article explains how criticism of the housing schemes, the chief representative of which was urbanist Jiří Hrůza (1925-2012), had been growing stronger since as early as the mid-1960s. Influenced by works of US journalist and urbanistic activist Jane Jacobs (1916-2006), he presented a comprehensive critique of socialist modernism and questioned they very principle of urban planning as a tool of social transformation. The intellectual skepticism was soon thereafter reflected in urban planning practices in Prague; they abandoned the modernistic principle of zoning and acknowledged the value (first urbanistic, later architectural) of traditional quarters. In the end of the article, the author analyzes how the urbanistic turning point was confronted with building industry practices and political preferences demanding rapid construction of flats and apartments., Petr Roubal., and Obsahuje bibliografii a bibliografické odkazy
Úkolem manažera bylo zabezpečit hospodářskou a organizační efektivitu srovnatelnou s výkonem kapitalistické firmy a současně naplňovat sociálně-politické strategie socialistického režimu prostřednictvím sociálního plánování., The study examines the revivalof the management science in Czechoslovakia after 1956 and its activities in the context of political reforms of the 1968. The second part of the article monitors changes of the theory of management since 1968, focusing on the introduction of social planning and its relation to corporate management. The theory of management is presented as an expert activity which was influencing then existing concepts and ideas of the organization of economic life, form the development of complex planning and management systems to efforts aimed at establishing the profession of a socialist manager. The author´s goal is to describe the scope of the expert activity referred to above and also to analyze its politicial functions in different stages of the development of state socialism. He claims the attempt to create a management science consistent with specific feature of socialist economy led to different concepts and perceptions of methods and objectives of economic management, including different concepts of socialist managership. The reform policy of the 1960s permitted a vast receptions of Western management science, development of an institutional base, and creation of an expert culture drawing from a number of different professional disciplines, from psychology to system engineering. The reform managrement science was promoting socialist entrepreneurship: the idea requiered economic decentralization and the creation of a system based on an interaction between the plan and the market. The "consolidated" management science of the 1970s responded to a departure from the market socialism and a return to a central planning system by producing a different concept of socialist managership. The manager´s mission was to ensure a level of economic and organizational efficiency comparable to that of a capitalist enterprise and, at the same time, implement socio-political strategies of the socialist regime through social planning., Vítězslav Sommer., and Obsahuje bibliografii a bibliografické odkazy
V důsledku úzkého propojení československých stranických a státních záležitostí došlo počátkem šedesátých let k rychlému zastavení československo-čínské spolupráce, přičemž Sovětský svaz přislíbil sanovat škody, které tak československému hospodářství vznikly., b1_In this article, the author traces the changes in the Czechoslovak position in the international Communist movement after the Communist Party took power in Czechoslovakia. She concentrates on the Party’s relations with the Soviet and the Chinese Communists, which from the 1950s onwards represented two competing centres of power in world Communism. She argues that in Czechoslovak foreign policy the Communists subordinated the defence of State interests to the international solidarity of the workers, and, in keeping with that ideological guideline, the tasks of Czechoslovak foreign policy were set mainly according to the Soviet agenda and its vaguely defined aims for the international Communist movement. Prague became dependent on Moscow for personnel, information, and material, and lost the ability to act independently in international politics both outside and inside the Soviet bloc. Amongst Prague’s priorities were efforts to achieve the unity of the Soviet system of alliances and, beginning at the latest in 1956, it considered military intervention a suitable instrument in the event of a threat to that system. A comparative analysis of records for the ten years from 1953 to 1962, from the Archive of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic and from the Czechoslovak Communist Party leadership, which are deposited in the National Archive, Prague, demonstrate that Czechoslovak foreign policy was actually formed by way of inter-Party contacts. The Soviet Communists were paramount in the hierarchy; in the eyes of the Czechoslovak Communists, the Soviet position remained unchallenged by any Chinese attempts to provide an alternative to Soviet methods and plans to develop the international Communist movement in the late 1950s and early 1960s., b2_Indeed, at multilateral talks amongst dozens of Communist Parties in Moscow in November 1957 and in 1960, where Chinese objections were discussed, Czechoslovak Communists arrived after having been instructed by their Soviet comrades, and from this position they rejected all Chinese activities, despite Czechoslovak efforts to establish friendly and close ties with their Beijing comrades after 1948. As a result of this linking of Czechoslovak Party and State matters, Czechoslovak-Chinese collaboration ceased in the early 1960s, and the Soviet Union promised to compensate for any damages that thus accrued to the Czechoslovak economy., Daniela Kolenovská., and Obsahuje bibliografii
V závěrečných kapitolách studie podává autor přehled o tom, jak byla od třicátých do současnosti Podkarpatská Rus přítomná v české kulturní paměti a jak je Československo přítomno v kulturní paměti a historii Zakarpatí., a1_The author examines Czech journalism of the 1920s to find out what ideas and images Czechs had at that time about Carpathian Ruthenia, the easternmost part of their new country, the Czechoslovak Republic. In his research on this topic, the author employs Orientalism, a concept that originates in postcolonial studies, and, after analyzing his sources, he presents Carpathian Ruthenia as it appeared to Czechs at that time, that is, as the Czechoslovak Orient, with the characteristic features of the exotic, the picturesque, the wild, the backward, and with a different sense of time. For Czechs (and to a lesser extent Slovaks too) who came to Carpathian Ruthenia after 1918 as clerks, teachers, and police, in the role of the new administrators, or as tourists, this was initially an almost unknown environment. The need to get one´s bearings in it, to integrate it into the new republic, and to legitimate the new government led the Czechs to conceive of the local Rusyns either as fellow Slavs who had for centuries suffered under Magyar oppression or as simple-minded natives who need civilizing. According to the author, the depiction of the Rusyns as ''good folk and heart'' was, however mixed with descriptions of them as indolent and irrational beings, with an inclination to drink and, in their naiveté, susceptible to Communist or Ukrainian nationalist propaganda. By contrast, the other local ethnic groups, the Magyars and the Jews, were depicted by Czechs in a mainly negative way, as Orientals, the opposite of Europeans, whose influence had to be minimalized. A similarly negative assessment applied also to the Communists of Carpathian Ruthenia, Ukrainian immigrants, and the Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church., a2_Czechs, according to the author, often described themselves as rational and efficient bearers of Western Civilization, but were, they felt, sometimes excesively lenient or idealistic. A quite different picture of Carpathian Ruthenia, the author argues, was offered by the journalism of the Czechoslovak Communists. In the 1920s, the Communists were the strongest political party here and it was mainly their discourse that established the narrative about a Czech bourgeois dictatorship, occupation, and colonial practices. In the concluding sections of the article, the author presents a summary of how, from the 1930 to the present, Carpathian Ruthenia was present in Czech cultural memory and Czechoslovakia was present in the cultural memory and history of Carpathian Ruthenia., Stanislav Holubec., and Obsahuje bibliografii a bibliografické odkazy
