High abundance of cockspur (Echinochloa crus-galli) at the geothermal carbon dioxide spring area in Stavešinci indicates that this species is able to grow under widely varying CO2 concentrations. Living cockspur plants can even be found very close to gas-releasing vents where growth is significantly reduced. Plant height correlated well with CO2 exposure. The δ13C value of the CO2 spring air was -3.9 ‰ and δ13C values of high-, medium-, and low-CO2 plants were -10.14, -10.44, and -11.95 ‰, respectively. Stomatal response directly followed the prevailing CO2 concentrations, with the highest reduction of stomatal conductance in high CO2 concentration grown plants. Analysis of the curves relating net photosynthetic rate to intercellular CO2 concentration (PN-Ci curves) revealed higher CO2 compensation concentration in plants growing at higher CO2 concentration. This indicates adjustment of respiration and photosynthetic carbon assimilation according to the prevailing CO2 concentrations during germination and growth. A differential response to long-term ozone exposures (50 and 100 mm3 m-3) was observed in the green and white areas of variegated leaves of Hedera canariensis var. azorica L. In green tissue the photosynthetic activity was depressed via a stomatal mechanism, and in white regions no effect was observed. Chlorophyll fluorescence parameters remained unchanged in green portions, whereas in the white ones Fm and Fv/Fm significantly diminished following ozone fumigation. and G. F. Soldatini ... [et al.].
Morphological, anatomical and physiological frond traits of Cheilanthes persica (Bory) Mett. ex Kuhn were studied to analyze its adaptive strategy. Mean frond life span is about 340 d. Mature fronds are characterized by 91 g m-2 areal dry mass (ADM) and 217 g m-2 succulence. The reduction of frond water content in July (dehydration phase) caused a 51 % decrease in frond surface area (SA). Fronds were dry in August (desiccation phase); nevertheless, in September they showed an increased SA (rehydration phase). Chlorophyll (Chl) a/b ratio, above 3, and the well developed palisade parenchyma (two layers, total thickness of 103.9 µm) are typical for sun leaves. Chl and carotenoid contents and net photosynthetic rate (PN) increased during frond development until the highest values in April-May (maturity phase). When mean air temperature reached 31.3 °C, stomatal conductance (gs) decreased by 34 % and PN by 33 %. The high pigment contents can dissipate the excess of radiant energy, particularly under unfavourable conditions, when PN is low. Rather high PN was found during the rehydration stage. Surface sterilised seeds of mungbean (Vigna radiata L. Wilczek cv. T-44) were soaked in 0, 10-8, 10-6, or 10-4 M aqueous solution of 28-homobrassinolide (HBR) for 4, 8, or 12 h. The treated seeds were grown in sandy loam soil filled in earthen pots and sampled at 30, 40, and 50 d. Net photosynthetic rate, leaf chlorophyll content, carbonic anhydrase activity (E.C. 4.2.1.1), carboxylation efficiency, stomatal conductance, and seed yield at harvest were enhanced by the HBR treatment. We analyzed the physiological response of the Mediterranean evergreen species (Arbutus unedo L., Cistus incanus L., Erica arborea L., Erica multiflora L., Phillyrea latifolia L., Pistacia lentiscus L., Quercus ilex L., and Rosmarinus officinalis L.) to winter low air temperatures. In occasion of two cold events, in February 2005 (T min = 1.8 °C), and January 2006 (T min = 3.1 °C and minimum T air = -0.40 °C during the nights preceding the measurements), R. officinalis, C. incanus, and E. multiflora had the highest net photosynthetic rate (PN) decrease (73 %, mean value) with respect to the winter PN maximum, followed by A. unedo (62 %), P. latifolia and P. lentiscus (54 %, mean value), E. arborea (49 %), and Q. ilex (44 %). Among the considered species, Q. ilex was able to maintain PN near the maximum for 150 min during the day, A. unedo, P. lentiscus, E. arborea, P. latifolia, E. multiflora, and R. officinalis for 60 min, and C. incanus for 30 min. The calculated mean winter daily PN ranged from 7.9±0.6 (Q. ilex) to 2.8±0.5 (R. officinalis) µmol(CO2) m-2 s-1. During the study period, chlorophyll (Chl) content decreased by 36 % on an average in the two cold events, and the carotenoid (Car) to Chl ratio increased by 133 % in Q. ilex, having the highest value in January 2006. PN and high Car/Chl ratio. On the contrary, R. officinalis and C. incanus had the lowest cold resistance by the highest PN decrease and the lowest Car/Chl (C. incanus). Thus, winter stress could be an additional limitation to Mediterranean evergreen species production, and the capacity of the species to maintain PN near 90-100 % during winter is determinant for biomass accumulation. and L. Five-year-old plants of two olive cultivars (Frantoio and Moraiolo) grown in large pots were exposed for 7 to 8 months to ambient (AC) or elevated (EC) CO2 concentration in a free-air CO2 enrichment (FACE) facility. Exposure to EC enhanced net photosynthetic rate (PN) and decreased stomatal conductance, leading to greater instantaneous transpiration efficiency. Stomata density also decreased under EC, while the ratio of intercellular (Ci) to atmospheric CO2 concentration and chlorophyll content did not differ, except for the cv. Moraiolo after seven months of exposure to EC. Analysis of the relationship between photosynthesis and Ci indicated no significant change in carboxylation efficiency of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase after five months of exposure to EC. Based on estimates derived from the PN-Ci relationship, there were no apparent treatment differences in daytime respiration, CO2 compensation concentration, CO2-saturated photosynthetic rate, or photosynthetic rate at the mean Ci, but there was a reduction in stomata limitation to PN at EC. Thus 5-year-old olive trees did not exhibit down regulation of leaf-level photosynthesis in their response to EC, though some indication of adjustment was evident for the cv. We analyzed the response of potted strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo L.) seedlings exposed to water stress by withholding water for 10 d (WS). Leaf water potential, net CO2 assimilation, and stomatal conductance decreased with increasing water deficit. A 30 % reduction of chlorophyll (Chl) content in the antenna complexes was observed in WS-plants. Simultaneously, a decline of photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm) occurred as a result of an excess of solar radiation energy when carbon assimilation was limited by stomata closure due to soil water deficit. The non-photochemical quenching of Chl fluorescence (ΦNPQ) significantly increased, as well as the leaf contents of zeaxanthin (Z) and antheraxanthin (A) at the expense of violaxanthin during the WS-period. Elevated predawn contents of de-epoxidized xanthophyll cycle components were associated with a sustained lowering of predawn photosystem 2 efficiency; this suggested an engagement of Z+A in a state primed for energy dissipation. Thus, the ability of strawberry trees to maintain the functionality of the xanthophyll cycle during the Mediterranean summer is an efficient mechanism to prevent irreversible damages to the photosynthetic machinery through thermal energy dissipation in the antenna and the reduction in photochemical efficiency. and R. 2-year-old seedlings of Metasequoia glyptostroboides were grown in open top chambers and exposed to four ozone concentrations [O3] (charcoal-filtered air, CF; 50, 100, and 200 mm3 m-3) for 25 d. Measurements of growth, leaf chlorophyll (Chl) content, and gas exchange parameters were made before and/or after O3 exposure. Leaf length, crown width, Chl a/b, net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and transpiration rate were significantly reduced at 100 and 200 mm3(O3) m-3. Net photosynthetic rate (PN), transpiration rate (E), and stomatal conductance (gs) in an adult oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) canopy were highest in the 9th leaf and progressively declined with leaf age. Larger leaf area (LA) and leaf dry mass (LDM) were recorded in middle leaves. PN showed a significant positive correlation with gs and a negative relationship with leaf mass per area (ALM). The oil palm leaf remains photosynthetically active for a longer time in the canopy which contributes significantly to larger dry matter production in general and greater fresh fruit bunch yields in particular. and K.
