An experiment was conducted to study the effect of NaCl (electric conductivity of 0, 4, 8, 12, and 16 dS m-1) on growth, gas exchange parameters, water status, membrane injury, chlorophyll stability index and oxidative defense mechanisms in two cultivars (Gola and Umran) of Indian jujube (Ziziphus mauritiana). Results showed that the dry mass and leaf area reduced linearly with increasing levels of salinity. Net photosynthetic rate (PN), transpiration (E), and stomatal conductance (gs) were comparatively lower in Umran which further declined with salinity. Leaf relative water content, chlorophyll (Chl) stability and membrane stability also decreased significantly under salt stress, with higher magnitude in Umran. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POX) and catalase (CAT) activities were higher in Gola whereas hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) accumulation and lipid peroxidation (MDA content) were higher in control as well as salttreated plants of Umran. The Na+ content was higher in the roots of Gola and in the leaves of Umran, resulting in high K+/Na+ ratio in Gola leaves. Thus it is suggested that salt tolerance mechanism is more efficiently operative in cultivar Gola owing to better management of growth, physiological attributes, antioxidative defense mechanism, and restricted translocation of Na+ from root to leaves along with larger accumulation of K+ in its leaves., R. The current concentrations of O3 have been shown to cause significant negative effects on crop yield. The present levels of ozone may not induce visible symptoms in most of plants, but can result in substantial losses in reproductive output. This paper considers the impact of ambient O3 on gas exchange, photosynthetic pigments, chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence and carbohydrate levels in the flag leaf of wheat plants during various stages of reproductive development using open-top chambers. Mean O3 concentration was 45.7 ppb during wheat growth and 50.2 ppb after flag leaf development. Reproductive stage showed higher exceedence of O3 above 40 ppb compared to the vegetative stage. Diurnal variations in net photosynthetic rate (PN) and stomatal conductance (gs), intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci), Fv/Fm ratio, photosynthetic pigments, soluble sugars, and starch were measured at 10, 30, and 50 days after flag leaf expansion (DAFE). The results showed reductions in PN, gs, Fv/Fm ratio, photosynthetic pigments and starch, and increases in Ci, F0, and soluble sugars in nonfiltered chambers (NFCs) compared to filtered chambers (FCs). Maximum changes in measured parameters were observed at 50 DAFE (i.e. grain filling and setting phase). Diurnal variation in PN showed double peaked curve in both FCs and NFCs, but delayed peak and early depression in NFCs. Stomatal conductance was significantly lower in NFCs. The study suggests that higher prevalence of ambient O3 during reproductive development led to significant alteration in physiological vitality of wheat having potential negative influence on yield. and R. Soil salinization and alkalinization frequently co-occur in naturally saline and alkaline soils. To understand the characteristics of mixed salt-alkali stress and adaptive response of Medicago ruthenica seedlings to salt-alkali stress, water content of shoots, growth and photosynthetic characteristics of seedlings under 30 salt-alkaline combinations (salinity 24-120 mM and pH 7.03-10.32) with mixed salts (NaCl, Na2SO4, NaHCO3, and Na2CO3) were examined. The indices were significantly affected by both salinity and pH. The interactive effects between salt and alkali stresses were significant, except for photosynthetic pigments. Water content of shoots, relative growth rates of shoots and roots and pigment concentrations showed decreasing trends with increasing salinity and alkalinity. The root activity under high alkalinity and salinity treatments gradually decreased, but was stimulated by the combined effects of low alkalinity and salinity. The survival rate decreased with increased salinity, except at pH 7.03-7.26 when all plants survived. Net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance and intercellular CO2 concentration decreased with increased salinity and pH. M. ruthenica tolerated the stress of high salt concentration when alkali concentration was low, and the synergistic effects of high alkali and high salt concentrations lead to the death of some or all seedlings. M. ruthenica appeared to be salt-alkali tolerant. Reducing the salt concentration or pH based on the salt components in the soil may be helpful to abate damage from mixed salt-alkaline stress. and J. Simultaneous measurements of leaf gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence for Koelreuteria paniculata Laxm. at 380 ± 5.6 and 600 ± 8.5 μmol mol-1 were conducted, and the photosynthetic electron flow via photosystem II (PSII) to photosynthesis, photorespiration, and other electron-consuming processes were calculated. The results showed that the photosynthetic electron flow associated with carboxylation (Jc), oxygenation (Jo), and other
electron-consuming processes (Jr) were 72.7, 45.7, and 29.4 μmol(e-) m-2 s-1 at 380 μmol mol-1, respectively; and 86.1, 35.3, and 48.2 μmol(e-) m-2 s-1 at 600 μmol mol-1, respectively. Our results revealed that other aspects associated with electronconsuming processes, except for photosynthesis and respiration, were neither negligible nor constant under photorespiratory conditions. Using maximum net photosynthetic rate (Pmax), day respiration (R), photorespiration rate (Rl), and maximum electron flow via PSII
(Jmax), the use efficiency of electrons via PSII at saturation irradiance to fix CO2 was calculated. The calculated results showed that the use efficiency of electrons via PSII to fix CO2 at 600 μmol mol-1 was almost as effective as that at 380 μmol mol-1, even though more electrons passed through PSII at 600 μmol mol-1 than at 380 μmol mol-1., Z. Photosynthetic organs are often characterized by anthocyanins being accumulated either in the epidermal or in the mesophyll cells making these tissues to turn reddish-brown in colour. It has been hypothesized that these pigments protect underlying chloroplasts from light-stress because they absorb photons of the photosynthetically active waveband. However, the photoprotective role of anthocyanins has not been undoubtedly shown on a broad range of species. In this study, green and anthocyanic areas of leaves of Pelargonium × hortorum, the latter possessing variable levels of anthocyanins, were compared using pigment analysis and pulse amplitude modulated in vivo chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence. Quenching analysis of the induction and dark relaxation curves of slow Chl fluorescence kinetics showed that at photoinhibitory conditions [by applying above-saturation light intensity of 1,600 μmol(quantum) m-2 s-1 white light at low (4°C) temperature], anthocyanic areas were at least equally sensitive to photoinhibition as green leaf areas. In fact, the level of photoinhibition tended to be proportional to the level of anthocyanin accumulation suggesting that this characteristic was indicative of the photoinhibitory risk. The results of the present study clearly show that anthocyanins in leaf areas of Pelargonium do not afford a photoprotective advantage., G. Liakopoulos, I. Spanorigas., and Obsahuje bibliografii
Leaf gas exchange of terrestrial and epiphytic orchids from the Atlantic Rainforest in northeast Brazil was investigated under artificial growth conditions. The terrestrial orchids showed higher values of all photosynthetic parameters in comparison to epiphytic ones. There was a close relationship between PN and gs for both terrestrial and epiphytic orchids. Taken together, our results demonstrated that the photosynthetic parameters were related to the specific growth habits of the orchids under study., M. V. Pires ... The aim of this study was to characterize the key physiological aspects of three sugarcane cultivars (RB92579, RB867515 and RB872552) under biological nitrogen fixation (BNF). Plants were generated in tubes containing aseptic substrates and these plants were transferred to pots containing washed sand, but watered with a mineral fertilizer, and inoculated with a mixture of five diazotrophic bacteria three times at seven-day intervals. Under BNF, all of the cultivars contained half of their total leaf nitrogen content and 50% less shoot dry mass. The leaves of plants under BNF showed approximately 65% less of the total protein content (TP). The
gas-exchange control plants had twice the CO2 assimilation rates than the BNF plants. The activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) was increased in all cultivars under BNF when compared with the control; thus, the content of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was also increased in these plants. The results of this study indicate that after acclimatization, the inoculation of young plants from tissue culture with diazotrophic bacteria could supply approximately 50% of their nitrogen requirement., C. The gas-exchange characteristics, leaf water potential and chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) seedlings subjected to water stress and recovery were investigated in a greenhouse experiment. At 24 days after imposition of stress, leaf water potential in water-stressed seedlings was doubled compared to that of control and there was a drastic decline in gas-exchange parameters viz. photosynthesis, transpiration, and stomatal conductance. Water stress did not irreversibly affect gas-exchange parameters and quantum efficiency of photosystem II, as seedlings exhibited total recovery of photosynthetic apparatus by 12th day of rehydration. These findings indicate that oil palm exhibits physiological plasticity to water stress during the seedling stage. and K. Suresh ... [et al.].
a1_To determine how the use of a given rootstock can influence the functioning of the photosynthetic apparatus of the scion under salt stress, the growth, gas exchange, photosystem II (PSII) efficiency, xanthophyll cycle, and chloroplast ultrastructure of nongrafted,
self-grafted, and pumpkin-grafted (hereafter referred to as rootstock-grafted) cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) plants were investigated at day 15 after being treated with 90 mM NaCl. The reductions in plant growth of the rootstock-grafted plants were lower than those of the nongrafted and self-grafted plants under 90 mM NaCl. The net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, maximal and effective quantum yield of PSII photochemistry, photochemical quenching coefficient, and effective quantum-use efficiency of PSII in the light-adapted state of the nongrafted and self-grafted plants were significantly decreased under 90 mM NaCl. However, these reductions were alleviated when the cucumber plants were grafted onto the pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata Duch.) rootstock. The intercellular CO2 concentrations were significantly increased in the nongrafted and self-grafted plants under 90 mM NaCl, whereas it was decreased in the rootstock-grafted plants. Nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) and the deepoxidation state of the xanthophyll cycle were significantly increased under 90 mM NaCl, particularly in the rootstockgrafted plants, suggesting the rootstock-grafted plants had higher potential to dissipate excess excitation energy and reduce the probability of photodamage to PSII. Under 90 mM NaCl, the number of grana was reduced, the thylakoids were swollen, and starch granules accumulated in all plants. However, the damage of chloroplast ultrastructure was alleviated in the rootstock-grafted plants., a2_Taken together, the use of C. moschata rootstock alleviated salt stress in cucumber plants by delaying photoinhibition, probably due to a lower incidence of both stomatal and nonstomatal factors limiting photosynthesis., Z. This work aimed to evaluate if gas exchange and PSII photochemical activity in maize are affected by different irradiance levels during short-term exposure to elevated CO2. For this purpose gas exchange and chlorophyll a fluorescence were measured on maize plants grown at ambient CO2 concentration (control CO2) and exposed for 4 h to short-term treatments at 800 μmol(CO2) mol-1 (high CO2) at a photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) of either 1,000 μmol m-2 s-1 (control light) or 1,900 μmol m-2 s-1 (high light). At control light, high-CO2 leaves showed a significant decrease of net photosynthetic rate (PN) and a rise in the ratio of intercellular to ambient CO2 concentration (Ci/Ca) and water-use efficiency (WUE) compared to control CO2 leaves. No difference between CO2 concentrations for PSII effective photochemistry (ΦPSII), photochemical quenching (qp) and nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) was detected. Under high light, high-CO2 leaves did not differ in PN, Ci/Ca, ΦPSII and NPQ, but showed an increase of WUE. These results suggest that at control light photosynthetic apparatus is negatively affected by high CO2 concentration in terms of carbon gain by limitations in photosynthetic dark reaction rather than in photochemistry. At high light, the elevated CO2 concentration did not promote an increase of photosynthesis and photochemistry but only an improvement of water balance due to increased WUE. and C. Arena, L.
