The Asian ladybird Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is regarded as an invasive species in many parts of the world. In a previous study we hypothesised that H. axyridis enters diapause at the end of October and then shifts to a quiescent state in December in northwestern Europe. In the present study we test this idea of a short, early period of diapause by sampling beetles from their hibernation sites immediately after their migratory flights in October, subsequently keeping them in outdoor cages, and then, after certain time-intervals, measuring the pre-oviposition time under optimal egg-laying laboratory conditions at 25°C. We did this at both short (12L) and long (16L) photoperiods, since a photoperiodic response is an indicator of true diapause, rather than quiescence. A significant, albeit small, difference in pre-oviposition period between the two photoperiods, which disappears in December, corroborates our earlier hypothesis that the ladybirds are in a state of diapause until mid-December. Compared with that of native ladybirds the diapause of H. axyridis generally is relatively short and weak; moreover, it appears to have become shorter over the last decade. Fruit of two almond, Prunus amygdalus Linnaeus, cultivars (Retsou and Truoito) containing diapausing larvae of Eurytoma amygdali Enderlein, were collected in early August from coastal areas in northern Greece. Some larvae were removed from the fruit and maintained singly in open plastic vials and others left in the fruit until the end of the low-temperature period. They were kept at a low temperature of 10°C from the beginning, or after 8 weeks at 20°C. The larvae were subsequently maintained at 20°C and whether they completed the two diapause stages was recorded for 60 more weeks. When the larvae in vials, were kept initially for 8 weeks at 20°C, most of those from Retsou and all of those Truoito almonds completed the first stage of diapause. Of the larvae in the fruits, most of those in Truoito but less than 50% of those in Retsou almonds completed the first stage of diapause after 8 weeks at 20°C. Larvae from different orchards and different almond cultivars differed in diapause intensity. When the larvae were kept at a low temperature of 10°C from the beginning for 4, 8 or 16 weeks and then at 20°C they completed the second diapause stage synchronously, but the time of completion was delayed, and depended on the duration of the low temperature treatment. In several cases the time to diapause completion was bimodally distributed and the relative size of peak depended on the duration of the early exposure to low temperature.
Larval diapause development and termination and some characteristics of cold hardiness in Pectinophora gossypiella (Saunders) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) were studied under field conditions in northern Greece. P. gossypiella overwintering larvae were sampled at 20 to 30 day intervals and subjected to two photoperiodic regimes at 20°C. In larvae kept under a long-day photoperiod (16L : 8D) diapause development was accelerated compared to those kept under a short-day photoperiod (8L : 16D). There was no difference in response to the two photoperiods after February. Mean number of days to pupation of P. gossypiella overwintering larvae decreased progressively through the sampling period, from November to April. Chilling is not a prerequisite but does accelerate diapause development. Supercooling points for P. gossypiella overwintering larvae ranged from -14 to -17°C with the majority dying after freezing.
Diapause fixation and development were studied in females of a Czech population of Aquarius paludum by monitoring changes in oxygen uptake, weight and reproduction potential in field adults between August and February. The fall in oxygen uptake related to fresh weight (from > 1000 µl O2 per g per h to around 500 µl O2 per g per h) in field adults during early diapause was similar in two age cohorts, although the time of adult ecdysis differed by 50 days and thus occurred at markedly different temperatures and photoperiods of late August vs. early October. The different conditions affected the weight of females and thus also the absolute value of oxygen consumption: both parameters were much lower in the October females. The seasonal time of diapause termination in A. paludum did not differ from findings in other cold temperate insects: diapause and the photoperiodic response ended in the winter, as was shown by the possibility of insects' reactivation by 26°C in spite of a diapause promoting daylength of 12L : 12D. In most females (78.6%) ovaries matured after transfer to these conditions in mid-February, while ovarian maturation occurred in only 16.7% of females transferred in early January and no ovarian maturation was observed in females transferred in early December. Ovarian maturation was preceded by a transient increase in oxygen consumption from 600 µl O2 per g per h to 1400 µl O2 per g per h.
The diapause inducement condition, cold hardiness, and flight ability in Cry1Ac-resistant (BtR) and Cry1Ac-susceptible (96S) strains of Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) were compared in the laboratory. The BtR strain was derived from the 96S strain and shows 1375-fold resistance to the Cry1Ac toxin after having been selected for 52 generations. Compared with the 96S strain, the Bt-resistant strain was more likely to go into diapause under a short-photoperiod environment. At 11L : 13D, 12L : 12D and 13L : 11D photoperiods, the percentages of BtR insects entering diapause were 72.7%, 82.9% and 68.7%, respectively, which were significantly higher than those in the 96S strain (58.6%, 67.4% and 46.3%, respectively) under the same conditions. The supercooling points (SCP) and freezing points (FP) were not significantly different between the BtR and 96S strains. The LT50 (50% lethal time) and LT90 (90% lethal time) of BtR pupae were also not significantly different from those of the 96S strain at -15°C. The moths from both strains had similar flight ability when their larvae were fed with nontoxic control diet. However, the total flight distance of these BtR moths was 56.2 km whose larvae fed on normal diet, which was more than twice as much as for those feeding on Bt diet (26.2 km). Flight duration for these BtR moths was longer after feeding on normal diet (11.6 h) than after feeding on Bt diet (7.3 h).

Jan Manner in Prague and the as yet largely unexamined diary specimens from the famous P. Bartoloměj Michal Zelenka from the time he was active in Brandýs nad Labem. In addition to these diaries, the diary is also compared with notes made by the distinguished Baroque preacher and writer O. F. De Waldt.

The size and fecundity of Hemiberlesia lataniae (Signoret) (Hemiptera: Diaspididae) on partially resistant and susceptible kiwifruit (Actinidia spp.) varieties was measured. The size ratio of mature H. lataniae grown on a partially resistant genotype, compared with those on a susceptible genotype, was 0.67-0.51 for 2nd instar exuviae area, 0.32 for adult body area and 0.18 for estimated body volume. The fertility ratio was 0.1, but the pre-oviposition period and the size of the crawlers were the same. Diaspidid scale insects' unusual ability to continue growing after the final moult appears to be a key feature allowing these insects to show extreme size plasticity while retaining the ability to reproduce even when very small. These observations challenge current theories of insect development that postulate the need to achieve a critical weight threshold before the final moult.
