Examination of a total of 581 fish specimens of 15 species from 39 cenotes (sinkholes) in the Yucatan Peninsula, southeastern Mexico, revealed the presence of 10 species of adult trematodes. These were as follows: Saccocoelioides sogandaresi Lumsden, 1963, Saccocoelinides sp. (family Haploporidae), Cichlasotrema ujati Pineda et Andrade, 1989 (Angiodictyidae), Crassicutis cichlasomae Manter, 1936 (Homalometridae), Magnivitellinum simplex Kloss, 1966 (Macroderoididae), Stunkardiel-la minima (Stunkard, 1938) (Acanthostomidae), Oligogonotylus manieri Watson, 1976 (Cryptogonimidae), Genarchella tropica (Manter, 1936), G. astyanactis (Watson, 1976), and G. isabellae (Lamothe-Argumedo, 1977) (Derogenidae). Saccocoelioides sogandaresi is reported from Mexico for the first time. Poecilia velifera and P. latipunctata for S. sogandaresi, Cichlasoma octo-fasciatum for C. cichlasomae, Cichlasoma friedrichslahli and C. meeki for O. manieri, and C. meeki, C. octofasciatum and Go-hiomorus dormitor for C. isabellae represent new host records. Maritrema orensensis sp. n. (Digenea: Microphallidae) from Balneario Orcnsc, Buenos Aires province, Argentina, is described. Adults of M. orensensis were collected from the intestine of the kelp gull Larus dominicanus Lichtenstein, 1823 (Aves: Laridae) and differ from adults of other related species, principally, in the shorter intestinal caeca and the incomplete ring of vitelline follicles.
Some digeneans and cestodes parasitic in a population of the white-faced ibis Plegadis chihi (Vieillot) from Buenos Aires province, Argentina, arc presented. The digeneans Dietziella egregia (Dietz, 1909), Patagifer bilobus (Rudolphi, 1819), Ascocotyle (Leighia) hadra Ostrowski de Núfiez, 1992 and Posthodiplostomum nanum Dubois, 1937 from the intestine; Prosthogonimus ovatus (Rudolphi, 1803) from the cloaca; Athesmia heterolecithodes (Braun, 1899) from the bile ducts and the cestode Hymenolepis megalops (Nilzsch in Crcplin, 1829) from the cloaca, were recorded. The discovery of D. egregia, P. ovatus, A. heterolecithodes and P. nanum constitute new host and/or new geographical records. Adults of A. (L.) hadra, previously described in experimental definitive hosts, are first reported from a naturally infected bird. Hymenolepis megalops, a cestode of Anseriformes is first reported from Ciconiiforines.
Four species of adult digeneans arc reported from freshwater fishes of two lakes in Neuquén, Patagonia, Argentina. Allocreadium patagonicum sp. n. (Allocreadiidae) is described from the intestine of Percichthys colhuapiensis MacDonagh and Percichthys trucha (Cuvier et Valenciennes) (Percichthyidae) from Lago Aluminé. Three species rcdescribed are: Acanthostomoides apophalliformis Szidat, 1956 (Acanthostomidac) from the intestine of P. colhuapiensis and P. trucha from Lago Aluminé and of Salmo trutta (Linnaeus) (Salmonidae) from Lapo Muechulafquén; Deropegus patagonicus (Szidat, 1956) comb. n. (= Genarches patagonicus Szidat, 1956) (Derogenidae) from the stomach of P. colhuapiensis, P. trucha, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum) (Salmonidae) and Salvelinus fontinalis (Mitchill) (Salmonidae) from Lago Aluminé and of S. trutta from Lago l luechulafquén; and Austrocreadium papilliferum Szidat, 1956 from the intestine of P. trucha from Lago Aluminé. The genus Polylekithum Arnold, 1934 is considered a synonym of the genus Allocreadium Looss, 1900. The genus Austrocreadium Szidat, 1956 is removed to the family Homalomelridae.
Just nineteen species of ectoparasitic helminths were found in a survey of over 1,500 individuals of 26 species of sillaginid fishes in the Indo-west Pacific, A twentieth worm is known only from the literature; a twenty-first, also known only from the literature, is considered a doubtful record. Fifteen of the twenty worms are branchial monogeneans, one is a monoge-nean of the pharyngeal plates, one is an ectoparasitic digenean living under the scales, and three are leeches of the mouth cavity and fins. The most common monogeneans were diplectanids (Diplectanum spp. and Monoplectanum spp.) and microcotylids (Polylabris spp.), each with five recently described or redescribed species. Of the remaining monogeneans, three were extremely rare, and two were uncommon. Pseudnbivagina sp. and Polynemicola sp. (Microcotylidae) and Pseudempleurosoma sp. (Ancyrocephalidae) were represented by only a single worm each from three different hosts (Sillago robusta, S. sihama, and S. ingenuua, respectively). The gyrodactylid Gyrodactylus sp, is widespread and was recorded from four species of sillaginids (S. ciliata, S. japonica, S. schomburgkii and S. sihama). Encolyllabe chirrmemi Robinson (Capsalidae) is recorded for the first time from sillaginids, but only on S. aeolus.'Tv/o additional monogeneans are known from sillaginids only in the literature: Dacty-logyrus sp, (Dactylogyridae) is known only from cultured S. sihama', the single specimen of Microcotyle sp. (Microcotylidae) recorded from Sillaginodes punctata is probably a contaminant, since the haptor was missing. The generalist trematode Trans-versolrema Ucinum Manter (Transversotrematidae) was found for the first time in samples of four species of sillaginids (Sillago analis, S. ingenuua, S. lutea and 5. sihama). Three species of piscicolid leeches were encountered: Austrohdella translucens Badham was common on the fins of three large inshore sillaginids (S. ciliata, S. schomburgkii and S. analis); a single specimen of the generalist species Zeylanicobdella arugamensis De Silva was recovered from S. soringa·, and specimens of Z. stellata (Moore) infected S. schomburgkii and S. analis. The diversity of host-specific worms in Sillaginidae is low compared with those of some other Indo-west Pacific fishes.
Brachylecithum microtesticulatum Timon-David, 1955 (Digenea: Dicrocoeliidae) is recorded for the first time in the Black Sea region. The morphology and variability of the digeneans recovered from Larus argentatus in Bulgaria and the Ukraine are described and compared with the redescription of the species (Bartoli and Mas-Coma 1989). Lyperosomum lari Travassos, 1917 of Smogorzhevskaya (1976) is considered a synonym of B. microtesticulatum.
Ectoparasitic Prototransversotrema steeri Angel infected Acanthopagrus australis (Günther) in western (W. Bay) and southern (S. Bay) Moreton Bay with greatest abundance in winter (June - August), and none in summer (December - February). This confirms previous observations on seasonality of P. steeri from a small estuary in New South Wales. Transversotrema licinum Manter, which is a new host and geographical record, infects A. australis in W. Bay but not S. Bay, with large abundances in summer and winter, lowest abundance in spring. Increased size of P. steeri in winter in S. Bay could be explained by increased size offish sampled since fish length and size of each parasite species were correlated positively. Transversotrema licinum increased in size from summer to winter irrespective of fish size. Number of eggs in utero and parasite size were correlated for both species; worms in mid-size range had most eggs, and P. steeri had more eggs (average = 19.2, 0-80) than T. licinum (3.3, 0-21); eggs were similar in length. Number of eggs per parasite, adjusted for parasite size, was greatest in autumn (P. steeri) or summer (T. licinum), i.e. early in infection period. Spawning migration to eastern Moreton Bay did not influence number of eggs per parasite.
The genera Preptetos Pritchard, 1960 and Neopreptetos Machida, 1982 are redefined. The following species are described and/or recorded from marine fishes. From the Great Barrier Reef: Preptetos caballeroi Pritchard, 1960 in Naso annula-tus, N. brevirnslris and N. vlamingii·, P. xesuri (Yamaguti, 1940) in Zebrasoma veliferum and Z. scopas; Preptetos cannoni Barker, Bray et Cribb, 1993 in Siganus dolialus and S. fuscescens', Preptetos laguncula sp. n. in Naso unicornis (type-host); P. impar sp. n. in Lutjanus erythropterus (type-host) and L. malabaricus·, Neopreptetos arusettae Machida, 1982 in Pomacanthus semicirculatus·, and N. kurochkini (Toman, 1989) in Chaetodontoplus meredithi. From southwestern Australia: Preptetos rotto sp. n. in Nelusetta ayraudi (type-host), Neosebastes pandus, Oplegnathus woodwardi and Pagrus auratus. The new combination Preptetos trulla (Linton, 1907) (originally Distomum then Lepocreadium) is made and the species Lepocreadium areolatum (Linton, 1900) is considered likely to belong in Preptetos.
Spermiogenesis and the spermatozoon were studied in the digenean Mesocoelium monas Rudolphi, 1819 (from the toad Bufo sp. in Gabon). An ultrastructural study revealed that spermiogenesis follows the usual pattern found in digeneans, i.e. proximo-distal fusion of axonemes with a median cytoplasmic process followed by elongation. The spermatozoon has two fully incorporated axonemes with the 9 +“1” trepaxonematan pattem. Indirect immunofluorescence localization of tubulin and fluorescent labelling of the nucleus were used to obtain additional information on the structure of the spermatozoon. It was thus shown that one of the axonemes is slightly shorter than the other (190 versus 220 pm) and that the filiform nucleus (65 pm in length) is located at the distal extremity of the spermatozoon (220 pm in length). Various monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies, specific to alpha, beta, acetylated-alpha, or general tubulin, were used and produced similar labelling.
Brachylaimus fuscatus metacercaria develops unencysled in the terrestrial snail Ponsadenia duplocincta. For the first time in a larval stage of the genus Brachylaimus a distinctive surface structure has been observed. This structure of net-like interconnected ridges of the tegument was present on the whole body surface with the exception of the anterior part. Beside this structure scanning electron microscopy revealed five types of papillae. Three types, dome-like papillae, papillae with a finger-like process, and hollow papillae with a short cilium, were localized mainly in the suckers. Hollow papillae without a cilium were arranged in groups or singly around the ventral sucker and genital pore. Ribbed papillae were observed on the ventral body surface.
