A high pulse pressure (PP) is a marker of increased artery stiffness and represents a well-e stablished independent predictor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The objective of the research was to determine whether invasively measured central aortic PP was related to the presence and severity of coronary artery disease. In total 1075 consecutive stable male patients undergoing diagnostic coronary angiography with a preserved left ventricular function were included. Diseased coronary vessel (DCV) was defined by the presence of >50 % stenosis. Men were divided into 3 groups according to the increased value of PP. The average PP in the tertiles was 47.8±7.1 vs. 67.0±4.9 vs. 91.3±12.8 mm Hg (p<0,01). The si gnificant differences of DCV was found among tertiles (1.51±1.11 vs 1.80±1.04 vs. 1.99±0.98 DCV, p<0.01). Aortic PP together with age and hyperlipoproteinemia were found as factors with an independent relationship to DCV according to multivariate linear regression. The purpose of the present study was to examine whether excessive CO2 output (V.co2excess) is dominantly attributable to hyperventilation during the period of recovery from repeated cycling sprints. A series of four 10-sec cycling sprints with 30-sec passive recovery periods was performed two times. The first series and second series of cycle sprints (SCS) were followed by 360-sec passive recovery periods (first recovery and second recovery). Increases in blood lactate (ΔLa) were 11.17±2.57 mM from rest to 5.5 min during first recovery and 2.07±1.23 mM from the start of the second SCS to 5.5 min during second recovery. CO2 output (V.co2) was significantly higher than O2 uptake (V.o2) during both recovery periods. This difference was defined as V.co2excess. V.co2excess was significantly higher during first recovery than during second recovery. V.co2excess was added from rest to the end of first recovery and from the start of the second SCS to the end of second recovery (CO2excess). ΔLa was significantly related to CO2excess (r=0.845). However, ventilation during first recovery was the same as that during second recovery. End-tidal CO2 pressure (PETco2) significantly decreased from the resting level during the recovery periods, indicating hyperventilation. PETco2 during first recovery was significantly higher than that during second recovery. The aim of the present study was to determine whether the oxygenation level in an inactive muscle during an incremental exercise test, determined by near-infrared spectroscopy, influences the maximal oxygen uptake (Vo2max). The oxygenation level at the onset of incremental exercise was higher than that at rest and started to decrease at a high power output. A minimal level was observed at exhaustion during incremental exercise. Vo2 increased linearly after some delay, and the rate of increase in Vo2 was greater at a higher power output. Heart rate increased linearly after the time delay, and the rate of increase in heart rate did not change. There was a significant correlation between Vo2max and oxygenation level in inactive muscle at exhaustion (r = -0.89). We therefore concluded that the oxygenation level in inactive muscle at exhaustion during incremental exercise is associated with an individual difference in Vo2max.
Inactive forearm muscle oxygenation has been reported to begin decreasing from the respiratory compensation point (RCP) during ramp leg cycling. From the RCP, hyperventilation occurs with a decrease in arterial CO2 pressure (PaCO2). The aim of this study was to determine which of these two factors, hyperventilation or decrease in PaCO2, is related to a decrease in inactive biceps brachii muscle oxygenation during leg cycling. Each subject (n = 7) performed a 6-min two-step leg cycling. The exercise intensity in the first step (3 min) was halfway between the ventilatory threshold and RCP (170±21 watts), while that in the second step (3 min) was halfway between the RCP and peak oxygen uptake (240±28 watts). The amount of hyperventilation and PaCO2 were calculated from gas parameters. The average cross correlation function in seven subjects between inactive muscle oxygenation and amount of hyperventilation showed a negative peak at the time shift of zero (r = -0.72, p<0.001), while that between inactive muscle oxygenation and calculated PaCO2 showed no peak near the time shift of zero. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is commonly associated with
a higher cardiometabolic risk. The relationship between steroid
hormones and cardiometabolic profile in PCOS has been
evaluated, but no single hormonal predictor of this association
has been identified to determine. To determine the relationship
between steroid hormones and cardiometabolic risk factors in
PCOS women. Study included 64 women diagnosed with PCOS.
Fasting blood samples were analyzed for biochemical, metabolic
parameters and sex steroid hormones. PCOS women with
BMI≥27 had significantly higher serum free testosterone (FT),
free androgen index (FAI), estrone (E1) (p=0.014, p=0.02,
p=0.01) than those with normal weight. In all subjects
E1 positively correlated with BMI (p=0.0067), serum insulin
(p=0.0046), HOMA-IR (p=0.0125) and negatively with
HDL-cholesterol (p=0.009). FAI positively correlated with serum
cholesterol (p=0.0457), triacylglycerols (TAG) (p=0.0001),
HOMA-IR (p=0.037), and glycemia (p=0.0001), negatively with
HDL-cholesterol (p=0.029). In multiple linear regression model
E1 most significantly predicted HOMA-IR, whereas FT/FAI
predicted HDL-cholesterol and BMI. We conclude that PCOS
women with marked overweight or obesity have higher FT, FAI
and E1 as compared with nonobese PCOS subjects. E1 and FT
may predict worse cardiometabolic profile in PCOS.
Warmer temperatures in the past 30 years have significantly influenced the seasonal development of insects throughout Europe. As a result of the outbreaks of black flies that have occurred in southeastern Lithuania since the 1970s it is hypothesized that this increase in black fly activity is due to the change in climate. To test this hypothesis the development of Simulium maculatum Meigen under different conditions was determined. This revealed that the time of hatching of S. maculatum eggs in Lithuania was influenced by winter air temperatures, especially those in March. Pupation in S. maculatum is associated with the increase in air and water temperatures that occur at the end of April and in May. The emergence of S. maculatum black flies occurs most often in May. At a water temperature of 13.2°C (1999), S. maculatum took 42 days to develop and half this time (21 days) when the water temperature was 18.8°C (2005). The number of black flies that emerged each year was determined by air temperature but unaffected by rainfall in June (either per month or per ten-day period). and Rasa Bernotienė, Galina Bartkevičienė.
Selected parameters of lipid metabolism were studied in a group of 76 children aged 12-13 years. The children were divided into 4 subgroups according to the duration of neonatal nutrition (no breast feeding, breast feeding for 3, 6 or more than 6 months). We studied the concentration of total serum cholesterol, its distribution into lipoprotein fractions, the concentration of serum triacylglycerols and apolipoproteins Ai (Apo Ai) and B (Apo B). Atherogenic indexes were calculated from the data obtained. The highest cholesterol levels (5.20 ±0.15 mmoU-1) were found in children who had been breast-fed for more than 6 months, while the highest concentrations of Apo B (0.80 ±0.07 g.r1) and Apo Ai (1.76 ±0.06 g.l-1) and the highest Apo B/Apo Ai ratio (0.45 ±0.04) were found in children with the shortest period of breast-feeding. No significant sex-related differences in total, VLDL, LDL, HDL cholesterol, triacylglycerols and apolipoproteins were observed.
The cabbage beetle, Colaphellus bowringi Baly undergoes an imaginal summer and winter diapause in the soil; adult emergence is spread over several months to more than 2 years, with prolonged diapause occurring in certain adults under natural conditions. The relationship between natural duration of diapause and postdiapause reproduction was investigated at 25°C under 12L: 12D photoperiod. The mean body weight of postdiapause adults with the long diapause duration of 21 months was significantly greater than with the shorter diapause duration of 5, 11 and 17 months. The longevity and mean total egg production of the postdiapause adult females with the long diapause duration of 21 months was significantly greater than that of postdiapause females with shorter diapause duration of 5, 11 and 17 months. All results demonstrate that extended diapause is associated with a high level of postdiapause reproductive performance. There is no negative trade off between diapause duration and the post-diapause reproductive traits that we measured in C. bowringi.
We investigated ventilation (V . E) control factors during recovery from light impulse-like exercise (100 watts) with a duration of 20 s. Blood ions and gases were measured at rest and during recovery. V . E, end tidal CO2 pressure (PETCO2) and respiratory exchange ratio (RER) were measured continuously during rest, exercise and recovery periods. Arterial CO2 pressure (PaCO2 pre) was estimated from PETCO2 and tidal volume (VT). RER at 20 s of exercise and until 50 s during recovery was significantly lower than RER at rest. Despite no change in arterialized blood pH level, PaCO2 pre was significantly higher in the last 10 s of exercise and until 70 s during recovery than the resting value. V . E increased during exercise and then decreased during recovery; however, it was elevated and was significantly higher than the resting value until 155 s (p<0.05). There was a significant relationship between V . E and PaCO2 pre during the first 70 s of recovery in each subject. The results suggest that PaCO2 drives V . E during the first 70 s of recovery after light impulse-like exercise. Elevated V . E in the interval from 70 s until 155 s during recovery might be due to neural factors., R. Afroundeh, ...
