In carob tree (Ceratonia siliqua) radiant energy saturated net photosynthetic rate (PN) during summer was about 10 % of the spring values. This was accompanied by a reduction in stomatal conductance (gs), which only partially explains the strong reduction in PN. Photosynthetic capacity (Pmax) and quantum yield (Φ), both measured under saturating CO2, had the maximum in spring (about 34 μmol m-2 s-1 and 0.08 mol mol-1, respectively) and both decreased in late summer to about 55 % of their spring values. Despite strong decreases in Φ, photoinhibition of photosystem 2 (PS2) was negligible or easily reversible in carob leaves subjected to summer drought, since Fv/Fm, measured in the morning, did not show appreciable changes. The recovery of affected parameters was very rapid after the first rains in late October. The chlorophyll (Chl) alb ratio in the end of the summer was 2.6, a value significantly lower than 3.6 obtained in the spring, suggesting that Chl a was preferentially reduced. and J. C. Ramalho, J. Photosynthetic characteristics of two hybrid rice combinations, Peiai 64S/E32 and Shanyou 63, were compared at the panicle differentiation stage. As compared with Shanyou 63, the new combination Peiai 64S/E32 showed a significantly higher net photosynthetic rate (PN), apparent quantum yield of carbon assimilation (Φc), carboxylation efficiency (CE), and photorespiratory rate (RP) as well as leaf chlorophyll content, but a significantly lower dark respiration rate (RD) and compensation irradiance (Ic). It also showed a slightly higher photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm and ΔF/Fm') of photosystem 2, a lower non-photochemical quenching (qN), and a similar CO2 compensation concentration (Γ) as compared to Shanyou 63. and Hua Jiang ... We investigated the strategies of four co-occurring evergreen woody species Quercus ilex, Quercus coccifera, Pinus halepensis, and Juniperus phoenicea to cope with Mediterranean field conditions. For that purpose, stem water potential, gas exchange, chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence, and Chl and carotenoid (Car) contents were examined. We recognized two stress periods along the year, winter with low precipitation and low temperatures that led to chronic photoinhibition, and summer, when drought coincided with high radiation, leading to an increase of dynamic photoinhibition and a decrease of pigment content. Summer photoprotection was related to non-photochemical energy dissipation, electron flow to alternative sinks other than photosynthesis, decrease of Chl content, and proportional increase of Car content. Water potential of trees with deep vertical roots (Q. coccifera, Q. ilex, and P. halepensis) mainly depended on precipitation, whereas water potential of trees with shallow roots (J. phoenicea) depended not only on precipitation but also on ambient temperature. and F. The effects of nitrogen (N) supply restriction on the CO2 assimilation and photosystem 2 (PS2) function of flag leaves were compared between two contrastive Japanese rice cultivars, a low-yield cultivar released one century ago, cv. Shirobeniya (SRB), and a recently improved high-yield cultivar, cv. Akenohoshi (AKN). Both cultivars were solution-cultured at four N supply levels from N4 (control) to N1 (the lowest). With a reduction in N-supply, contents of N (LNC), ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBPCO), and chlorophyll (Chl) in flag leaves decreased in both cultivars. In parallel with this, the net photosynthetic rate (PN), mesophyll conductance (g m), and stomatal conductance (gs) decreased. PN was more dominantly restricted by gm than gs. The values of PN, gm, and RuBPCO content were larger in AKN than SRB at the four N supply levels. The content of Chl greatly decreased with N deficiency, but the reduction in the maximum quantum yield of PS2 was relatively small. Quantum yield of PS2 (ΦPS2) decreased with N deficiency, and its significant cultivar difference was observed between the two cultivars at N1: a high value was found in AKN. The content ratio of Chl/RuBPCO was also significantly low in AKN. The low Chl/RuBPCO is one of the reasons why AKN maintained a comparatively high PN and ΦPS2 at N deficiency. The adequate ratio of N distribution between Chl and RuBPCO is the important prerequisite for the efficient and sustainable photosynthesis in a flag leaf of rice plant under low N-input. and E. Photosynthetic responses of potato (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Chunzao) were examined during potato virus Y (PVYNTN) infection. PVYNTN infection significantly reduced net photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance, but had little influence on intercellular CO2 concentration. As the disease developed, the maximum carboxylation velocity of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase and the maximum electron transport rate contributing to ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate regeneration gradually decreased, followed by substantial reductions in the relative quantum efficiency of photosystem 2 (PS2) electron transport, the efficiency of excitation energy capture by open PS2 reaction centres, and photochemical quenching, but not in sustained photoinhibition. Super-rice hybrids are two-line hybrid rice cultivars with 15 to 20 % higher yields than the raditional three-line hybrid rice cultivars. Response of photosynthetic functions to midday photoinhibition was compared between seedlings of the traditional hybrid rice (Oryza sativa L.) Shanyou63 and two super-rice hybrids, Hua-an3 and Liangyoupeijiu. Under strong midday sunlight, in comparison with Shanyou63, the two super-rice hybrids were less photoinhibited, as indicated by the lower loss of the net photosynthetic rate (PN), the quantum yield of photosystem 2 (ΦPS2), and the maximum and effective quantum yield of PS2 photochemistry (Fv/Fm and Fv'/Fm'). They also had a much higher transpiration rate. Hence the super-rice hybrids could protect themselves against midday photoinhibition at the cost of water. The photoprotective de-epoxidized xanthophyll cycle components, antheraxanthin (A) and zeaxanthin (Z), were accumulated more in Hua-an3 and Liangyoupeijiu than in Shanyou63, but the size of xanthophyll cycle pool of the seedlings was not affected by midday photoinhibition. Compared to Shanyou63, the super-rice hybrids were better photoprotected under natural high irradiance stress and the accumulation of Z and A, not the size of the xanthophyll pool protected the rice hybrids against photoinhibition. and Q. Employing the non-invasive techniques of infra-red gas analysis and pulse amplitude modulated chlorophyll fluorometry, we determined the partitioning of photosynthetic electrons between photosynthetic carbon reduction and other reductive processes resulting in the formation of active oxygen species (AOS) in intact green leaves. This we studied in plant species that are adapted to two different agro-climatic conditions, namely the warm plains (76°36'E, 9°32'N) and the cool mountains (1 600 m a.s.l.) in the south Indian state of Kerala. Ground frost and low temperature were more harmful to those species adapted to the warm plains than the ones adapted to the cool mountains. Exposure to low temperature decreased leaf photosynthetic carbon assimilation rates and quantum yield of photochemical activity in species naturally adapted to the warm plains. High irradiances further aggravated the harmful effects of low temperature stress possibly by overproducing AOS. This resulted in severe peroxidative damage as inferred by the accumulation of malondialdehyde (MDA) in the leaves. and B. Alam, J. Jacob.
Seasonal changes in water relations, net photosynthetic rate (PN), and fluorescence of chlorophyll (Chl) a of two perennial C3 deciduous shrubs, Ipomoea carnea and Jatropha gossypifolia, growing in a thorn scrub in Venezuela were studied in order to establish the possible occurrence of photoinhibition during dry season and determine whether changes in photochemical activity of photosystem 2 (PS2) may explain variations of PN in these species. Leaf water potential (ψ) decreased from -0.2 to -2.1 MPa during drought in both species. The PN decreased with ψ in I. carnea and J. gossypifolia by 64 and 74 %, respectively. Carboxylation efficiency (CE) decreased by more than 50 and 70 % in I. carnea and J. gossypifolia, respectively. In I. carnea, relative stomatal limitation (Ls) increased by 17 % and mesophyll limitation (Lm) by 65 % during drought, while in J. gossypifolia Ls decreased by 27 % and Lm increased by 51 %. Drought caused a reduction in quantum yield of PS2 (ϕPS2) in both species. Drought affected the capacity of energy dissipation of leaves, judging from the changes in the photochemical (qP) and non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) coefficients. Photoinhibition during drought in I. carnea and J. gossypifolia was evidenced in the field by a drop in the maximum quantum yield of PS2 (Fv/Fm) below 0.8 and also by non-coordinated changes in ϕPS2 and quantum yield of non-photochemical excitation quenching (Yn). Total soluble protein content on an area basis increased with ψ but the ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase content remained unchanged. A reduction of total Chl content with drought was observed. Hence in the species studied photoinhibition occurred, which imposed an important limitation on carbon assimilation during drought. and W. In the dimorphic stag’s hom fem, Platycerium coronarium (Koenig ex Mueller) Desv., photosynthetic characters and chlorophyll (Chl) contents were deteiinined in both nést and pendulous fronds at different stages of ontogeny and at different positions along the longest length of each frond. Area-specific radiant energy- saturated net photosynthetic (P^) and dark respiration rates, dry mass-specific Chl content and quantum yield increased during frond development and decreased when senescence set in. Radiant energy-saturated and dry-mass specific Chl content were greatest in the youngest tissues of each frond. In addition to the functions ascribed to the nést (water and nutrient collection) and pendulous (reproduction) fronds, the results indicate the important roles of both frond types in providing Chemical energy to the growth and survival of the plant.
Response to irradiance of leaf net photosynthetic rates (PN) of four carrot cultivars: Cascade, Caro Choice (CC), Oranza, and Red Core Chantenay (RCC) were examined in a controlled environment. Gas exchange measurements were conducted at photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) from 100 to 1 000 μmol m-2 s-1 at 20 °C and 350 μmol (CO2) mol-1(air). The values of PN were fitted to a rectangular hyperbolic nonlinear regression model. PN for all cultivars increased similarly with increasing PAR but Cascade and Oranza generally had higher PN than CC. None of the cultivars reached saturation at 1 000 μmol m-2 s-1. The predicted PN at saturation
(PNmax) for Cascade, CC, Oranza, and RCC were 19.78, 16.40, 19.79, and 18.11 μmol (CO2) m-2 s-1, respectively. The compensation irradiance (I c) occurred at 54 μmol m-2 s-1 for Cascade, 36 μmol m-2 s-1 for CC, 45 μmol m-2 s-1 for Oranza, and 25 μmol m-2 s-1 for RCC. The quantum yield among the cultivars ranged between 0.057-0.033 mol(CO2) mol-1(PAR) and did not differ. Dark respiration varied from 2.66 μmol m-2 s-1 for Cascade to 0.85 μmol m-2 s-1 for RCC. As PN increased with PAR, intercellular CO2 decreased in a non-linear manner. Increasing PAR increased stomatal conductance and transpiration rate to a peak between 600 and 800 μmol m-2 s-1 followed by a steep decline resulting in sharp increases in water use efficiency. and S.
