The relationship between chlorophyll (Chl) content and net photosynthetic rate (PN) in an isolated Quercus ilex tree, growing inside Villa Pamphili Park in Rome, was explored. The highest PN was in March, May, and September (10.1 μmol m-2 s-1, maximum rate). PN decreased by 65 % (with respect to the yearly maximum) when leaf temperature reached 34 °C, and by 50 % when leaf temperature was 9 °C. The highest Chl contents were in April, October [1.47 g kg-1 (d.m.), maximum value], and December. The lowest Chl content was found in July (0.78 g kg-1). The decrease of PN in July was in close connection with the decrease of Chl content. On the contrary, the high Chl content during winter did not correspond with PN of this season. Discordances between Chl content and PN over the year influenced the regression analysis, which although positive did not show very high correlation coefficients (r = 0.7). To assess the relationship between chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence (CF) and photosynthetic pigments, soybean was grown under varying phosphorus (P) nutrition at ambient and elevated CO2 (EC). The EC stimulated, but P deficiency decreased plant height, node numbers, and leaf area concomitantly with the rates of stem elongation, node addition, and leaf area expansion. Under P deficiency, CF parameters and pigments declined except that carotenoids (Car) were relatively stable indicating its role in photoprotection. The CF parameters were strongly related with Chl concentration but not with Chl a/b or Car. However, total Chl/Car showed the strongest association with CF parameters such as quantum efficiency and yield of photosystem II. This relationship was not affected by CO2 treatment. The high correlation between CF and total Chl/Car underscores the significance of the quantification of both, Chl and Car concentrations, to understand the photochemistry and underlying processes of photoprotection and mechanisms of excess energy dissipation in a given environment., S. Specific leaf area (SLA) is a key trait to screen plants for ecological performance and productivity; however, the relationship between SLA and photosynthesis is not always up-scalable to growth when comparing multiple species with different life cycles. We explored leaf anatomy in annual and perennial species of Physaria, and related it to photosynthesis and water loss. The annual Physaria gracilis had higher SLA, thinner leaves, and lower investment in protective tissues, than perennial P. mendocina. Physaria angustifolia (annual), and P. pinetorum (perennial) showed intermediate values. Both perennials had a thicker palisade and high photosynthesis, relative to annuals. The larger leaf veins of perennials should allow high water availability to the mesophyll. The thicker palisade should determine high resistance to water flow and help explain their high water-use efficiency. The responses to irradiance of photosynthetic CO2 assimilation and photosystem 2 (PS2) electron transport were simultaneously studied by gas exchange and chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence measurement in two-year-old apple tree leaves (Malus pumila Mill. cv. Tengmu No.1/Malus hupehensis Rehd). Net photosynthetic rate (PN) was saturated at photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) 600-1 100 (μmol m-2 s-1, while the PS2 non-cyclic electron transport (P-rate) showed a maximum at PPFD 800 μmol m-2 s-1. With PPFD increasing, either leaf potential photosynthetic CO2 assimilation activity (Fd/Fs) and PS2 maximal photochemical activity (Fv/Fm) decreased or the ratio of the inactive PS2 reaction centres (RC) [(Fi - Fo)/(Fm - Fo)] and the slow relaxing non-photochemical Chl fluorescence quenching (qs) increased from PPFD 1 200 μmol m-2 s-1, but cyclic electron transport around photosystem 1 (RFp), irradiance induced PS2 RC closure [(Fs - Fo')/Fm' - Fo')], and the fast and medium relaxing non-photochemical Chl fluorescence quenching (qf and qm) increased remarkably from PPFD 900 (μmol m-2 s-1. Hence leaf photosynthesis of young apple leaves saturated at PPFD 800 μmol m-2 s-1 and photoinhibition occurred above PPFD 900 μmol m-2 s-1. During the photoinhibition at different irradiances, young apple tree leaves could dissipate excess photons mainly by energy quenching and state transition mechanisms at PPFD 900-1 100 μmol m-2 s-1, but photosynthetic apparatus damage was unavoidable from PPFD 1 200 μmol m-2 s-1. During the last century, the world soybean yield has been constantly enhancing at a remarkable rate. Factors limiting the soybean yield may be multiple. It is widely acknowledged that changes of root metabolism can influence aboveground characteristics, such as the seed yield and photosynthesis. In this study, we considered root bleeding sap mass (BSM) and root activity (RA) as indicators of the root growth vigour. We used 27 soybean cultivars, spanning from 1923 to 2009, to evaluate the contribution of root characteristic improvement to efficient photosynthesis and dry matter production. The BSM, RA, net photosynthetic rate (P N), and organ biomass were measured at different growth stages, such as the fourth leaf node, flowering, podding, and seed-filling stage. Our results showed that the soybean cultivars increased their biomass and P N thanks to genetic improvement. At the same time, BSM and RA also increased in dependence on a year of cultivar release. However, both P N and biomass were positively correlated with root characteristics only at the podding stage. Our data revealed that the improved root characteristic may have contributed to the enhanced photosynthesis, biomass, and yield of soybean cultivars during last 87 years of genetic improvement. To investigate into the relationship between two Rubisco activase (RCA) isoforms and photosynthetic rate, a set of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) were developed for accurate quantification of two RCA polypeptides based on two specific monoclonal antibodies against different RCA isoforms. The results showed that content of RCA small isoform (RCAS) was 5-fold more than that of RCA large isoform (RCAL) content in all leaves and the RCAL/RCAS ratio reached maximum in the leaf with the highest photosynthetic rate. Although the difference in two RCA polypeptides accumulation in leaves was caused by different transcript level of two isoforms, the decrease of RCAL/RCAS ratio during leaf aging was not attributed to transcriptional regulation. The leaves with higher photosynthetic capacity exhibited higher RCAL/RCAS ratio and the decrease in photosynthetic rate and Rubisco activation state highly correlated with the decline of RCAL/RCAS ratio during leaf aging. Our results suggest that there is a posttranscriptional mechanism regulating the RCAL/RCAS ratio, which may play as a regulator modulating photosynthetic capacity during leaf aging in rice plant. and D. The aim of this work was to assess the effect of leaf thickness, leaf succulence (LS), specific leaf area (SLA), specific leaf mass (Ws) and leaf water content (LWC) on chlorophyll (Chl) meter values in six Amazonian tree species (Carapa guianensis, Ceiba pentandra, Cynometra spruceana, Pithecolobium inaequale, Scleronema micranthum and Swietenia macrophylla). We also tested the accuracy of a general calibration equation to convert Minolta Chl meter (SPAD-502) readings into absolute Chl content. On average, SPAD values (x) increased with fresh leaf thickness (FLT [μm] = 153.9 + 0.98 x, r2 = 0.06**), dry leaf thickness (DLT [μm] = 49.50 + 1.28 x, r2 = 0.16**), specific leaf mass (Ws [g (DM) m-2] = 6.73 + 1.31 x, r2 = 0.43**), and leaf succulence (LS [g(FM)] m-2 = 94.2 + 1.58 x, r2 = 0.19**). However, a negative relationship was found between SPAD values and either specific leaf area [SLA (m2 kg-1) = 35.1 - 0.37 x, r 2 = 0.38**] or the leaf water content (LWC [%]= 80.0- 0.42 x, r2 = 0.58**). Leaf Chl contents predicted by the general calibration equation significantly differed (p<0.01) from those estimated by species-specific calibration equations. We conclude that to improve the accuracy of the SPAD-502 leaf thickness and LWC should be taken into account when calibration equations are to be obtained to convert SPAD values into absolute Chl content. and R. Stable carbon isotope composition (δ13C), net photosynthetic rate (PN), actual quantum yield of photosystem 2 (PS2) electron transport (ΦPS2), nitrogen content (Nc), and photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency (PNUE) in the leaves of six broadleaf tree species were determined under field environmental conditions. The six tree species were Magnolia liliflora Desr., M. grandiflora Linn., M. denudata Desr., Prunus mume (Sieb.) Sieb. et Zucc. cv. Meiren Men, P. mume (Sieb.) Sieb. et Zucc. f. alphandii (Carr.) Rehd., and P. persica (L.) Batsch. var. rubro-plena. The relationships among δ13C, ΦPS2, P N, and PNUE, as well as their responses to Nc in the six species were also studied. Both P N and δ13C negatively correlated with Nc, but ΦPS2 positively correlated with Nc. This indicated that with Nc increase, PN and δ13C decreased, while ΦPS2 increased. There were weak negative correlations between δ13C and PNUE, and strong negative correlations (p<0.01) between ΦPS2 and PNUE. According to the variance analysis of parameters, there existed significant interspecific differences (p<0.001) of δ13C, PN, ΦPS2, PNUE, and Nc among the tree seedlings of the six tree species, which suggests that the potential photosynthetic capacities depend on plant species, irradiance, and water use capacity under field conditions. and S. Low temperature during the vegetative stage affects rice (Oryza sativa L.) seed-setting rate in Heilongjiang province at Northeast China. However, little is known about changes of the photosynthetic rate and physiological response in contrasting rice cultivars during chilling periods. In this study, two rice cultivars with different chilling tolerance were treated with 15°C from June 27 to July 7. The chilling-susceptive cultivar, Longjing11 (LJ11), showed a significant decrease in a ripening rate and seed-setting rate after being treated for four days, whilst chilling-tolerant cultivar, Kongyu131 (KY131), was only slightly affected after 4-d treatment. The photosynthetic activities, chlorophyll contents, and antioxidative enzyme activities in LJ11 decreased significantly along with the chilling treatment. The decrease in ß-carotene contents might play a role as it could cause direct photooxidation of chlorophylls and lead to the inhibition of the photosynthetic apparatus. In the meantime, no significant damage was found in leaves of KY131 from June 27 to July 11. In conclusion, the chilling-tolerance mechanism of rice is tightly related to the photosynthetic rate, metabolism of reactive oxygen species, and scavenging system in the vegetative stage., L.-Z. Seedlings of baldcypress (Taxodium distichum L.) grown in sealed containers containing nutrient solution were subjected to root-zone oxygen deficiency, physical restriction, and the combined stresses in a greenhouse. After six weeks of treatments (Phase I), half of the plants were harvested. The remaining half were allowed to continue (Phase II) under various treatments except plants that had restricted roots were freed thus allowing free expansion of roots into the nutrient solution. Oxygen deficiency and root physical restriction inhibited plant gas exchange parameters. Net photosynthetic rate (PN) was significantly higher in aerated unrestricted root (AUR) plants than in aerated root restricted (AR) plants and in anaerobic root unrestricted (FUR) plants than in anaerobic root restricted (FR) plants. After Phase I, FUR plants' shoot and root biomasses were 57.0 and 30.6 % lower than those of AUR plants, and AUR plants showed 3.3 and 3.8 times greater shoot and root biomasses than the AR plants, respectively. During Phase II, PN recovered rapidly in plants under aerated conditions, but not in plants under anaerobic conditions. The removal of physical root restriction under both aerated and anaerobic conditions resulted in rapid shoot and root growth in seedlings. Hence, root restriction or root-zone anaerobiosis, reductions in plant gas exchange, and biomass production in baldcypress were closely interrelated. In addition, root release from restriction was related to the regain of photosynthetic activity and biomass growth.
