In present paper we assess the climate change impact on mean runoff between the periods 1961-1990 (control period) and 2070-2099 (scenario period) in the Czech Republic. Hydrological balance is modelled with a conceptual hydrological model BILAN at 250 catchments of different sizes and climatic conditions. Climate change scenarios are derived using simple delta approach, i.e. observed series of precipitation, temperature and relative air humidity are perturbed in order to give the same changes between the control and scenario period as in the ensemble of 15 transient regional climate model (RCM) simulations. The parameters of the hydrological model are for each catchment estimated using observed data. These parameters are subsequently used to derive discharge series under climate change conditions for each RCM simulation. Although the differences in the absolute values of the changes in runoff are considerable, robust patterns of changes can be identified. The majority of the scenarios project an increase in winter runoff in the northern part of the Czech Republic, especially at catchments with high elevation. The scenarios also agree on a decrease in spring and summer runoff in most of the catchments. and V článku předkládáme výsledky modelování změn hydrologického režimu v důsledku změn klimatu mezi časovými obdobími 1961-1990 a 2070-2099 podle souboru patnácti regionálních klimatických modelů pro 250 povodí v České republice. Hydrologická bilance byla modelována pomocí konceptuálního hydrologického modelu BILAN. Časové řady ovlivněné změnou klimatu byly získány jednoduchou přírůstkovou metodou, tj. pozorované časové řady srážek, teplot a vlhkostí vzduchu (vstupy do modelu BILAN) byly opraveny pro každou simulaci pomocí přírůstkových faktorů tak, aby měsíční změny těchto veličin byly stejné jako podle uvažované simulace klimatického modelu. Hydrologický model je nakalibrován s využitím pozorovaných dat, identifikované parametry jsou následně využity pro simulaci hydrologické bilance pro řady ovlivněné klimatickou změnou. Základní podstata možných změn hydrologické bilance na území České republiky vyplývá z projekcí srážek a teplot pro Evropu, tj. postupné zvyšování teplot během celého roku a pokles letních, růst zimních a stagnace ročních srážek. V období od začátku podzimu do začátku léta dochází k růstu srážek, jenž je doprovázen řádově stejným růstem územního výparu způsobeným růstem teplot. V letním období dochází k poklesu srážek a v důsledku úbytku zásob vody v povodí nemůže docházet k výraznému zvyšování územního výparu. Důležitým faktorem ovlivňující změny odtoku je posun doby tání v důsledku vyšší teploty přibližně z dubna na leden-únor. Změny odtoku v období leden-květen jsou tedy dominantně určeny právě odlišnou dynamikou sněhové zásoby, změny v letním období zejména úbytkem srážek. Výsledné odhady změn odtoku jsou zatíženy značnou nejistotou, nicméně lze identifikovat robustní jevy společné pro řadu simulací. Jak ukazují výsledky, na většině modelovaných povodí je pokles odtoků v období od dubna do října společný valné většině modelů. Na druhé straně, růst odtoku v zimních měsících je značně nejistý. S tím souvisí i nejistota spojená se změnami roční bilance odtoků.
There is public concern that large-scale disturbances to forest cover caused by insects and storm winds in the Bohemian Forest could intensify high water flows and enhance the expected flooding risks predicted in current regional climate change scenarios. We analysed stream discharge in Upper Vydra and Große Ohe, neighbouring catchments in the Bohemian Forest, the largest contiguous forested area in Central Europe. Upper Vydra, in the Šumava National Park, and Große Ohe (including the Upper Große Ohe headwater catchment in the Bavarian Forest National Park) are similar in size, but differ in land use cover and the extent of disturbed Norway spruce stands. Publicly available runoff and meteorological data (1978-2011) were examined using non-parametric trend and breakpoint analysis. Together with mapped vegetation cover changes, the results were used to address the following questions: 1) are there significant changes in the hydrological cycle and, if so, do these changes relate to 2) the extent and expansion of disturbance in forests stands and/or 3) altered precipitation dynamics and thermal conditions? We found no marked overall change in annual runoff or in annual or seasonal precipitation, but a significant increase in high flows in March. This overall trend related to the marked warming in late winter and early spring (+~4 K in April, p < 0.01), irrespective of altitude and slope position. It significantly shifted the end of the snow cover period by more than three weeks to the beginning/middle of April depending on altitude, and intensified snow melt. In the Upper Große Ohe catchment, a significant decrease in catchment balance, the difference between the long term precipitation and runoff (-72 mm, 11%) was found when the loss of tree cover reached 30% of catchment area. Diminished evapotranspiration losses from severely disturbed stands increased groundwater recharge during summer and caused a significant rise in low flows in autumn. However, observed increases in late winter high flows were due to warming only. They could be further intensified by the increasing winter precipitation predicted under present climate change scenarios, and would therefore increase the risk of flooding at lower elevations.
Climate change impacts on water cycle at regional scale have been recently very investigated and discussed issue. This study focuses on changes of not only total runoff but also others water balance components: soil water content and evapotranspiration, in a monthly step. The climate change was described using outputs of two different global circulations models, ECHAM and HadCM based on two divergent scenarios (optimistic B1 and pessimistic A2) according to the IPCC. The simulation of water cycle was processed in the mesoscale Malse basin (437 km2 ) in southern Bohemia using distributed physically based hydrological model SWIM. The outputs for the time horizon 2050 were assessed in comparison with mean values from the representative period 1987-1998. The study indicates vulnerability against predicted changes of both temperature and precipitation patterns referred to the selected scenarios. A decrease of total runoff was expected; however, hydrological balance will be different particularly in the monthly pattern within a year. Tato studie se zaměřuje na sledování změny nejen odtoku, ale také změn obsahu půdní vody a evapotranspirace, a to v měsíčním kroku v průběhu roku. Pro popis změny klimatu byly zvoleny výstupy dvou globálních modelů ECHAM a HadCM podle dvou odlišných scénářů budoucího klimatického vývoje (optimistický B1 a pesimistický A2) podle IPCC. Hydrologický cyklus byl simulován použitím distribuovaného fyzikálního hydrologického modelu SWIM, a to na středně velkém povodí jihočeské Malše (437 km2 ), pro závěrový profil Pořešín. Výstupy odpovídající hypotetickému stavu v roce 2050 byly porovnávány s dlouhodobými průměrnými hodnotami z povodí za léta 1987-1998. Ukazuje se, že středně velké povodí Malše je citlivé vůči předpovídaným změnám teplot a srážek a podle scénářů dojde k očekávanému celkovému poklesu odtoku z povodí. Tento pokles bude provázen změnami hydrologické bilance během roku, viditelné především přesunem maximálních hodnot jednotlivých prvků do jiných měsíců.
In the study of Tomlain (1997) a soil water balance model was applied to evaluate the climate change impacts on the soil water storage in the Hurbanovo locality (Southwestern Slovakia), using the climate change scenarios of Slovakia for the years 2010, 2030, and 2075 by the global circulation models CCCM, GISS and GFD3. These calculations did not take into consideration neither the various soil properties, nor the groundwater table influence on soil water content. In this study, their calculated data were compared with those monitored at the same sites. There were found significant differences between resulting soil water storage of the upper 100 cm soil layer, most probably due to cappilary rise from groundwater at sites 2 and 3. It was shown, that the soil properties and groundwater table depth are importat features strongly influencing soil water content of the upper soil layer; thus the application of the soil water balance equation (Eq. (1)), neglecting the above mentioned factors, could lead to the results far from reality. and V práci Tomlaina (1997) bol aplikovaný bilančný model vodného režimu pôd na ohodnotenie dopadu klimatickej zmeny na vodné zásoby pôdy v lokalite Hurbanovo (juhozápadné Slovensko), použijúc scenáre klimatickej zmeny pre Slovensko pre roky 2010, 2030 a 2075, založené na globálnych cirkulačných modeloch CCCM, GISS a GFD3. V týchto výpočtoch nebol braný do úvahy vplyv vlastností pôdy a hladiny podzemnej vody na vlhkosť pôdy. V práci boli porovnané vypočítané hodnoty zásob vody s monitorovanými v tej istej lokalite. Bol nájdený význačný rozdiel medzi zásobami vody v 100-cm hornej vrstve pôdy najpravdepodobnejšie spôsobený kapilárnym prítokom od hladiny podzemnej vody v monitorovacích miestach 2 a 3. Bolo ukázané, že pôdne vlastnosti a hĺbka hladiny podzemnej vody sú dôležitými faktormi, ktoré silno ovplyvňujú vlhkosť hornej vrstvy pôdy; z toho vyplýva, že aplikácia bilančnej rovnice (rov. (1)), ktorá zanedbáva vyššie uvedené faktory, nedáva reálne výsledky.
The goal of this contribution is to assess the impacts of a global climate change on the Bilina basin hydrological regime. First part of the contribution focussed on the assessment of hydrological changes in the catchment and evaluation of flow conditions for the coal pit flooding. The Bilina basin is located in the northern Bohemia region near the Krusne Hory Mts. All the territory is intensively used as a coal mine area. Primarily eight climatic scenarios were selected on the basis of GCM ECHAM4 and HadCM2 to generate affected meteorological conditions. New data series were created - temperatures and precipitation – as the input for a rainfall-runoff model. The SACRAMENTO SAC-SMA model has been chosen as a tool for the rainfall-runoff simulations. A number of problems caused by the heavy influence of human activities appeared during a calibration. The model has been successfully verified and eight affected flow data series have been simulated. The scenarios have been ordered according to their influence on hydrological regime. The simulated flows have been statistically analysed and compared. The results show that significant shift in flow annual distribution could be expected. and Příspěvek se zabývá posouzením dopadu globální změny klimatu na hydrologický režim povodí Bíliny a zatápění zbytkové jámy Bílina. První část článku se zaměřuje na posouzení hydrologických změn povodí Bíliny a stanovení průtokových poměrů pro vlastní řešení zatápění zbytkové jámy za klimatické změny. Povodí je součástí Severočeské hnědouhelné pánve. Pro simulaci ovlivněných klimatických podmínek bylo zvoleno osm klimatických scénářů vytvořených na základě výstupů ze dvou globálních cirkulačních modelů ECHAM4 a HadCM2. Byly generovány nové srážkové a teplotní řady sloužící jako vstupy pro srážkoodtokový model SACRAMENTO SAC-SMA, který byl vybrán pro modelování ovlivněných průtoků. V průběhu kalibrace modelu se objevily nesrovnalosti způsobené silným antropogenním ovlivněním povodí; přesto se model podařilo úspěšně verifikovat a pro všech osm zvolených scénářů simulovat ovlivněné průtokové řady. Dané klimatické scénáře a simulované průtoky jsme podle míry ovlivnění hydrologického cyklu ohodnotili a vzájemně porovnali. Výsledky ukázaly, že je možné očekávat výrazný posun v rozložení dlouhodobých měsíčních odtoků.
The goal of this contribution is to assess the impacts of global climate change on the Bilina basin hydrological regime and the Bilina mine filling. The second part is focussed on flooding of the coal pit under the conditions affected by global warming. There are two approaches how to achieve the objective. The first method uses water from the Bilina river exclusively. The second one takes into consideration an advantage of the existing water resource system and of large water framework enabling water transfer from the Ohre river to the Bilina river to derive portion of water from the Ohre river. The operating regulations at the Nechranice reservoir had to be adapted to the climate change to improve controlled increase of discharge with regard to the flows transported. A simple water balance model was constructed to simulate a function of the Nechranice reservoir and the coal pit filling. Estimation of the climate change influence on the coal pit filling was performed based on the flooding time changes. The results of flooding simulation show that it is not possible to achieve the coal pit flooding by the Bilina river and it is necessary to transfer water from Ohre river to Bilina river. The climate change could significantly prolong the flooding of the coal pit by about 3 years and the operating regulations at the Nechranice reservoir could be considerably influenced. The impact of climate change could be substantially reduced by an improvement of the controlled increase of discharge by the Nechranice reservoir. and Příspěvek se zabývá posouzením dopadu globální změny klimatu na hydrologický režim povodí Bíliny a zatápění zbytkové jámy Bílina. Druhá část článku se zaměřuje na vlastní zatápění zbytkové jámy za klimatické změny. Vytěžená jáma povrchového lomu může být zatopena dvěma způsoby. První způsob využívá k zatopení jámy pouze vodu z řeky Bíliny, druhý počítá s převáděním vody z řeky Ohře do Bíliny pomocí existující vodohospodářské soustavy. Vzhledem ke změněným hydrologickým podmínkám bylo nezbytné přizpůsobit manipulace na nádrži Nechranice na řece Ohři klimatické změně tak, aby bylo možné zabezpečit požadovaný nadlepšený odtok v odběrném profilu čerpací stanice ke krytí požadavků na velikost plnicího přítoku zbytkové jámy Bílina. K tomuto účelu byl vytvořen jednoduchý bilanční model funkce nádrže Nechranice zohledňující různé velikosti převáděných objemů vody. Posouzení vlivu klimatické změny na zatápění zbytkové jámy proběhlo na základě rozboru délky plnění jámy. Simulace plnění zbytkové jámy ukázaly, že jámu nelze zatopit v doporučené době a bude proto nezbytné realizovat převody vody z Ohře do Bíliny. Klimatická změna patrně podstatně prodlouží dobu zatápění jámy zhruba o 3 roky a také výrazně zasáhne do manipulací na nádrži Nechranice. Nádrž Nechranice může podstatně zmírnit dopad klimatické změny úpravami velikostí nadlepšených odtoků.
The climatic variability and climate changes in the geological history of Earth are correlated with the environmental development. A special attention is paid to the impact of changing climate on the water resources and hydrological cycle. Possible impact of man's activities on the climatic variability is also discussed. Can the regulation of such activities slow down or bring to a stop the forthcoming climate change? A comparison of data from the Holocene period and from modern history indicates that the climatic variability and climate change have been always produced by external periodic phenomena and occasional cataclysmic events. In other words, the climate has never been stable and administrative measures limiting man's influence on the climate can bring only partial results. Considering that the climatic change is an unavoidable process, following measures should be taken: First, alternative scenarios of possible climatic development, would it be cooling or warming, should be set up. Second, preventive and protective methodologies need to be prepared for each scenario well in advance. Third, technologies facilitating man's survival and everyday life under changed climatic situation should be developed. and Klimatická variabilita a změny klimatu jsou sledovány v geologické historii Země a korelovány s historií životního prostředí. Zvláštní pozornost se věnuje vlivu měnícího se klimatu na vodní zdroje a hydrologický cyklus. Také je diskutován vliv činnosti člověka ve vztahu ke klimatu. Je možné redukcí takových aktivit zpomalit nebo zcela zastavit klimatické změny? Porovnání dat z holocénu a moderní historie ukazuje, že klimatická variabilita a změny byly vždycky vyvolávány mimozemskými periodickými vlivy, případně občasnými katastrofickými jevy. Jinými slovy, klima nikdy nebylo stabilní. Proto také administrativní opatření, omezující vliv člověka na klima, mohou být úspěšná pouze do jisté míry. Uvážíme-li, že klimatická variabilita i její hydrologické následky jsou nevyhnutelné, je třeba připravit příslušné scénáře možných klimatických změn, ať už souvisí s ochlazováním nebo oteplováním. Pro každý ze scénářů je třeba navrhnout metody preventivních a ochranných opatření s dostatečným předstihem. Konečně bude třeba vypracovat nové technologie usnadňující život člověka ve změněných klimatických podmínkách.
Longer term monitoring of soil water content at a catchment scale is a key to understanding its dynamics, which can assist stakeholders in decision making processes, such as land use change or irrigation programs. Soil water monitoring in agriculturally dominated catchments can help in developing soil water retention measurements, for assessment of land use change, or adaptation of specific land management systems to climate change. The present study was carried out in the Pannonian region (Upper-Balaton, Hungary) on Cambisols and Calcisols between 2015 and 2021. Soil water content (SWC) dynamics were investigated under different land use types (vineyard, grassland, and forest) at three depths (15, 40, and 70 cm). The meteorological data show a continuous decrease in cumulative precipitation over time during the study with an average of 26% decrease observed between 2016 and 2020, while average air temperatures were similar for all the studied years. Corresponding to the lower precipitation amounts, a clear decrease in the average SWC was observed at all the land use sites, with 13.4%, 37.7%, and 29.3% lower average SWC for the grassland, forest, and vineyard sites, respectively, from 2016 to 2020 (measured at the 15 cm depth of the soil). Significant differences in SWC were observed between the annual and seasonal numbers within a given land use (p < 0.05). The lowest average SWC was observed at the grassland (11.7%) and the highest at the vineyard (28.3%). The data showed an increasing average soil temperature, with an average 6.3% higher value in 2020 compared to 2016. The grassland showed the highest (11.3 °C) and the forest soil the lowest (9.7 °C) average soil temperatures during the monitoring period. The grassland had the highest number of days with the SWC below the wilting point, while the forest had the highest number of days with the SWC optimal for the plants.
Biocrust sustainability relies on dew and rain availability. A study of dew and rain resources in amplitude and frequency and their evolution is presented from year 2001 to 2020 in southern Africa (Namibia, Botswana, South Africa) where many biocrust sites have been identified. The evaluation of dew is made from a classical energy balance model using meteorological data collected in 18 stations, where are also collected rain data. One observes a strong correlation between the frequency of dew and rain and the corresponding amplitudes. There is a general tendency to see a decrease in dew yield and dew frequency with increasing distance from the oceans, located west, east and south, due to decreasing RH, with a relative minimum in the desert of Kalahari (Namibia). Rain amplitude and frequency decreases when going to west and north. Short-term dew/rain correlation shows that largest dew yields clearly occur during about three days after rainfall, particularly in the sites where humidity is less. The evolution in the period corresponds to a decrease of rain precipitations and frequency, chiefly after 2010, an effect which has been cyclic since now. The effect is more noticeable towards north. An increase of dew yield and frequency is observed, mainly in north and south-east. It results in an increase of the dew contribution with respect to rain, especially after 2010. As no drastic changes in the distribution of biomass of biocrusts have been reported in this period, it is likely that dew should compensate for the decrease in rain precipitation. Since the growth of biocrust is related to dew and rain amplitude and frequency, future evolution should be characterized by either the rain cycle or, due to global change, an acceleration of the present tendency, with more dew and less rainfalls.
Brief review on the availability of General Circulation Models (GCMs) and Regional Circulation Models (RCMs) outputs for regional downscaling is presented (more in Melo, 2003; Melo, 2004). Four basic methods of regional climate change scenarios design (1st - Incremental (the simplest), 2nd - Analogue (historical or paleoclimatic), 3rd - Weather generator (artificial or based on real climatic statistics), 4th - GCMs (General Circulation Models) based) are discussed more in details. The additional one - a combined method, usually based on GCMs (mean annual/monthly warming and mean annual/monthly change in precipitation totals) and on historical analogue (statistical structure of daily/monthly data series, including physical plausibility among phenomena), was utilized in Slovakia. Finally some results of different climate change scenarios for Hurbanovo and possible user problems are listed and discussed. Special scenarios of exceptional weather events are also demanded by users, mainly from the Hydrology, Agriculture and Forestry sectors, very concise overview of such scenarios design is presented. and Príspevok prezentuje stručný prehľad dostupných modelov všeobecnej cirkulácie atmosféry (GCMs) ako aj metód na regionálnu interpretáciu výstupov GCMs. V zásade môžeme metódy konštrukcie scenárov klimatickej zmeny (zmien klímy) rozdeliť do 4 skupín: 1. Inkrementálne (prírastkové) scenáre; 2. Analógové scenáre; 3. Stochastický generátor počasia; 4. Dowscaling výstupov GCMs s regionálnou interpretáciou a využitím experimentálnych časových radov. Za piatu môžeme považovať metódu kombinovanú, ktorá využíva spoľahlivejšie scenáre na báze GCMs (zväčša teplotné a zrážkové) a pre zvyšné klimatické prvky sa pripravujú scenáre ako analógy korelačnou alebo regresnou metódou. V príspevku sú uvedené tiež príklady vybraných scenárov pre Hurbanovo.
