From 29th March to 09th April 2006, the Morava catchment in the Danube River basin was hit by severe flooding caused by snow melting and rainfall. The floods affected settlements and agricultural lands in Slovakia, Czech Republic and Austria. In the downstream Morava, 100-year flood and more peak discharges were observed. The European Flood Alert System (EFAS), under development and running in pre-operational mode at the Joint Research Center of the European Commission, in partnership with Member States’ authorities and meteorological data providers, forecasted the event more than five days in advance. This paper investigates the performance of EFAS hydrologic forecasts for this event. Forecasts based on deterministic and probabilistic weather forecasts are presented and verified against observed data. The analysis showed that forecasts based on probabilistic weather ensembles were able to detect an earlier signal of the flood event. The lack of consistence between simulations based on different medium-range weather forecasts was the main reason for a late diffusion of EFAS forecasts to its partner in Slovakia, with an impact on the value of the forecasts as a pre-alert. The potential benefit of ensemble hydrologic forecasts to early flood warning and increased preparedness is highlighted. and V období 29. marca až 9. apríla 2006 zasiahla povodie Moravy, ktoré je súčasťou povodia Dunaja ničivá povodeň, zapríčinená prevažne topením sa snehu v kombinácii s pomerne výdatnou zrážkovou činnosťou. Povodeň spôsobila škody na obydliach a poľnohospodárskej pôde v Českej republike, Rakúsku a aj na Slovensku. V dolnej časti toku Morava bol zaznamenaný kulminačný prietok s dobou opakovania viac ako 100 rokov. Európsky povodňový varovný systém, vyvinutý a prevádzkovaný v tzv. predoperačnom režime JRC EU v spolupráci s členskými štátmi, ktoré sú aj poskytovateľmi hydrometeorologických údajov, prognózoval túto rozsiahlu povodňovú epizódu s predstihom 5 dní. Príspevok sa zameriava na skúmanie realizácie hydrologických predpovedí z EFAS systému pre uvedenú povodňovú udalosť. Predpovede vypočítané na základe deterministických a pravdepodobnostných predpovedí počasia sú verifikované pozorovanými údajmi. Analýza výsledkov ukázala, že predpovede robené na základe pravdepodobnostných ansámblových predpovedí vývoja počasia boli schopné dať signál, že sa povodňová udalosť stane, s väčším intervalom predstihu. V dôsledku nekonzistencie vyhodnocovaných predpovedí bola slovenskému partnerovi EFAS-u odoslaná oneskorene. Príspevok poukázal tiež na skutočnosť, že využitie ansámblov pre hydrologické predpovede a včasné varovanie pred nebezpečenstvom povodní umožňuje v dostatočnom predstihu zlepšiť pripravenosť na tieto udalosti.
In Tunisia especially in the Medjerda watershed the recurring of floods becoming more remarkable. In order to limit this risk, several studies were performed to examine the Medjerda hydrodynamic. The analysis of results showed that the recurrences of floods at the Medjerda watershed is strongly related to the sediment transport phenomena. Initially, a one dimensional modelling was conducted in order to determine the sediment transport rate, and to visualize the river morphological changes during major floods. In continuity of this work, we will consider a two-dimensional model for predicting the amounts of materials transported by the Medjerda River. The goal is to visualize the Medjerda behaviour during extreme events and morphological changes occurred following the passage of the spectacular flood of January 2003. As a conclusion for this study, a comparative analysis was performed between 1D and 2D models results. The objective of these comparisons is to visualize the benefits and limitations of tested models. The analysis of the results demonstrate that 2D model is able to calculate the flow variation, sediment transport rates, and river morphological changes during extreme events for complicated natural domains with high accuracy comparing with 1D Model.
The climatic variability and climate changes in the geological history of Earth are correlated with the environmental development. A special attention is paid to the impact of changing climate on the water resources and hydrological cycle. Possible impact of man's activities on the climatic variability is also discussed. Can the regulation of such activities slow down or bring to a stop the forthcoming climate change? A comparison of data from the Holocene period and from modern history indicates that the climatic variability and climate change have been always produced by external periodic phenomena and occasional cataclysmic events. In other words, the climate has never been stable and administrative measures limiting man's influence on the climate can bring only partial results. Considering that the climatic change is an unavoidable process, following measures should be taken: First, alternative scenarios of possible climatic development, would it be cooling or warming, should be set up. Second, preventive and protective methodologies need to be prepared for each scenario well in advance. Third, technologies facilitating man's survival and everyday life under changed climatic situation should be developed. and Klimatická variabilita a změny klimatu jsou sledovány v geologické historii Země a korelovány s historií životního prostředí. Zvláštní pozornost se věnuje vlivu měnícího se klimatu na vodní zdroje a hydrologický cyklus. Také je diskutován vliv činnosti člověka ve vztahu ke klimatu. Je možné redukcí takových aktivit zpomalit nebo zcela zastavit klimatické změny? Porovnání dat z holocénu a moderní historie ukazuje, že klimatická variabilita a změny byly vždycky vyvolávány mimozemskými periodickými vlivy, případně občasnými katastrofickými jevy. Jinými slovy, klima nikdy nebylo stabilní. Proto také administrativní opatření, omezující vliv člověka na klima, mohou být úspěšná pouze do jisté míry. Uvážíme-li, že klimatická variabilita i její hydrologické následky jsou nevyhnutelné, je třeba připravit příslušné scénáře možných klimatických změn, ať už souvisí s ochlazováním nebo oteplováním. Pro každý ze scénářů je třeba navrhnout metody preventivních a ochranných opatření s dostatečným předstihem. Konečně bude třeba vypracovat nové technologie usnadňující život člověka ve změněných klimatických podmínkách.
The aim of the paper is to study spatial and temporal changes in the magnitude, duration and frequency of high flows in the Danube basin. A hydrological series of the mean daily discharges from 20 gauging stations (operated minimally since 1930) were used for the analysis of changes in the daily discharges. The high flow events were classified into three classes: high flow pulses, small floods, and large floods. For each year and for each class, the means of the peak discharges, the number and duration of events, and the rate of changes of the rising and falling limbs of the waves were determined. The long-term trends of the annual time series obtained were analyzed and statistically evaluated. The long-term high flow changes were found to be different in three individual high flow classes. The duration of the category of high flow pulses is decreasing at 19 stations on the Danube and is statistically significant at the Linz, Vienna, Bratislava and Orsova stations. The frequency of the high flow pulses is increasing in all 20 stations. Also, the rising and falling rates of the high flow pulse category are increasing at the majority of the stations. The long-term trends of the selected characteristics of the small floods are very similar to the trends of the high flow pulses, i.e., the duration of small floods is decreasing, and their mean number per year is increasing. In the category of large floods the changes were not proved.
The aim of this article is to present partial results of more extensive research which is focused on using different methods for runoff computation in areas differing in land use. With the help of the deterministic lumped model HEC-HMS (Hydrologic Engineering Center - Hydrologic Modelling System) several simulations of runoff changes by different basin conditions were carried out. The Blanice River basin in the Šumava Mts. was chosen as an experimental catchment in its closure profile in Podedvory (gauge station, area 209.6 km2 ). For assessment of land cover changes impact on hydrological regime four scenarios were carried out - 10, 20, 50 and 100-year 1-day probability precipitation in combination with different initial conditions (soil saturation). These scenarios were applied to the stage of the land cover in the year 1992 and 2000 (based on the CORINE Landcover database). The method SCS CN (Soil Conservation Service Curve Number) was applied as the main model technique. and Cílem příspěvku je prezentovat dílčí výsledky rozsáhlejšího výzkumu zaměřeného na změny srážkoodtokového procesu vlivem změn charakteru vegetace a půdního pokryvu. Pomocí matematického modelu HEC-HMS (Hydrologic Engineering Center - Hydrologic Modelling System) byly uskutečněny simulace odtokové odezvy na příčinnou srážku ve dvou časových horizontech, které charakterizují dva odlišné stavy krajinného pokryvu. Modelovou oblastí bylo povodí Blanice po závěrový profil Podedvory (nad VD Husinec, 209,6 km2 ). Reakce povodí na srážkovou událost při změnách vegetačního pokryvu byla zhodnocena ve dvou časových horizontech - 1992 a 2000. K hodnocení změn vegetace byla použita databáze CORINE Landcover. Modelování změny odtokového režimu v daných časových horizontech proběhlo pro čtyři srážkové události. První z nich byl 1-denní úhrn srážek s pravděpodobností překročení 0,1, tedy s dobou opakování 10 let a další s dobami opakování 20, 50 a 100 let. Jako hlavní modelovací technika byla použita metoda SCS CN (Soil Conservation Service Curve Number).
Growing occurrence of extreme floods in the Czech Republic has attracted attention to the security of protective earthfill embankments along the rivers. A suddenly increased amount of water on the waterside slope of the embankment may have destroying or even catastrophic consequences. Predictions of seepage patterns through the earth body are usually done considering the saturated flow beneath the free water level only, neglecting the saturated-unsaturated character of the soil water dynamics within earthfill dams. The importance of water dynamics within an earth dam is known and may be addressed using numerical simulation models. In this study the solution based on transient simulation of seepage through protection levee using saturated-unsaturated theory is presented. Simulations were carried out by a two-dimensional numerical model based on Richards’ equation for water flow in porous medium. It has been shown that proposed approach is, with certain limitations, suitable for large scale engineering applications. and Vyšší pravděpodobnost výskytu extrémních klimatických jevů obrací pozornost k ochraně před následky, které tyto jevy způsobují. Zájem se soustředí na protipovodňové ochranné zemní hráze a jejich bezpečnost při povodních. Výpočet průsaku zemními hrázemi se často omezuje pouze na tu část hráze, která byla plně nasycená vodou, to znamená na plně nasycené proudění. Tento způsob modelování průsaku je dodnes považován za standardní, přestože je velmi limitující. Bez zahrnutí nenasycené části tělesa hráze je zanedbán vliv časově i prostorově proměnlivého pole vlhkostí (např. při infiltraci vody ze srážky) na polohu hladiny. V naší studii je simulováno proudění v tělese hráze s použitím numerického modelu, který umožňuje řešit proudění vody v proměnlivě nasyceném heterogenním pórovitém prostředí, s obecnými okrajovými podmínkami. Výsledky potvrdily, že přístup, který uvažuje proudění i v nenasycené části hráze, lze k řešení průsaků zemními tělesy úspěšně využít.
The paper presents the results of research of surface water and sediment contamination by the specific pollutants in the Klabava River Basin, subcatchment of Vltava River in Central Bohemia, Czech Republic. The analysis of spatial and temporal dynamics of the contamination is based on the water and sediment chemistry data from the long-term monitoring maintained by the Vltava River Authority completed by the own monitoring established in the Klabava River basin. The research revealed that the most important water and sediment contamination loads are mainly concentrated in the industrial area between cities Hrádek and Rokycany situated on downstream of the river basin. The performed analysis identified the cadmium as the most critical parameter as its concentrations in surface water exceeded the references limits up to several hundred times. However, pollution with the specific organic substances was still below the critical limit, except for the AOX indicator. The results of sample-taking in the river basin allowed analyzing the effect of extreme flood in August 2002 on the changes in the sediment load by heavy metals. Contaminated sediments were mostly washed out by the inundation and this resulted in significantly lower values than were observed in the previous seasons. Repeated observations however indicate that the pollution concentrations are gradually reaching their original values. and Článek představuje výsledky výzkumu znečištění povrchových vod a sedimentů specifickým znečištěním v povodí Klabavy. Analýza vychází z dostupných dat o chemismu vody a plavenin ze sledování podniku Povodí Vltavy a z vlastních dat získaných rozbory vzorků odebraných na síti účelově zřízených profilů. Pro hodnocení chemismu sedimentů byly použity standardní metody - porovnání s pozaďovými hodnotami geogenního prostředí podle Turekiana a Wedepohla a zatřídění do tříd jakosti podle Igeo. Z výsledků vyplývá, že zatížení vody i sedimentů je soustředěno zejména do oblasti průmyslového a sídelního uskupení mezi Hrádkem a Rokycany. Varovné jsou zde především koncentrace kadmia ve vodě, které v této oblasti překračují referenční hodnoty i několiksetkrát, silnou zátěž potvrzují i analýzy sedimentu. Znečištění specifickými organickými látkami s výjimkou ukazatele AOX nedosahuje kritických hodnot. Výsledky vlastních odběrů umožnily rovněž zhodnotit vliv povodně v srpnu 2002 na změnu zátěže sedimentů. Kontaminované sedimenty byly povodní vyplaveny a hodnoty, naměřené bezprostředně po povodni, jsou výrazně nižší než v předchozím období. Díky pokračující zátěži se však postupně vrací k původním hodnotám.
