This paper deals with the identification of BIFs and associated sulphide mineralisation. An integrated approach, including the use of Landsat ETM-plus and Cartosat DEM data, GIS analysis, and geological data, is adopted for this purpose in the Nagavi area of Gadag Schist Belt (GSB), India. This integrated approach has enabled in identifying BIFs and structures. Band-7 of the ETM-plus sensor of Landsat-7 is used to identify BIFs and Band-5 for lineaments and shear zones. As a result of this study, the presence of gold mineralisation in sheared zones is noticed. BIFs are the economically prominent litho-units in the GSB hosting high-grade iron ore deposits along with sulphide mineralised shear zones. The strata bound ore is hosted primarily by BIF, consisting of chlorite, alternating chert and magnetite, sulphides and carbonate bands of a millimetre to centimetre scale.
This paper deals with some ways of carrying out an analysis of a flood event using the KINFIL hydrological model on small catchments where both land use and management play a significant role, and where these human activities can influence design discharges. The combination of GIS techniques with the KINFIL model, which is conceived on physically based infiltration approach and on a kinematic wave transformation of direct runoff, provides a tool for analysing historical rainfall-runoff events, for assessing design discharges, and for simulating some hypothetical flood scenarios. KINFIL is a complex model using the correspondence of Curve Number (CN) with soil parameters and the correspondence of kinematic wave transformation with the physiographical parameters of the Všeminka catchment in Eastern Moravia (Czech Republic), which was used in the tests. Two versions of the KINFIL model (KINFIL1, KINFIL2) were implemented. The infiltration part of the model is the same in both versions. KINFIL 1 assumes a more schematic geometrization of the catchment topography, distributing the catchment area to a V-shaped form in which a main channel collects direct runoff from both side planes or segments. This is not fully in accord with the topography of the sub-catchment. KINFIL 2 is a more sophisticated version, where the topography is GIS-organized, taking fully into account the river network and its corresponding sub-catchment division. The latter version is geographically (and also physically) better based, and the results of the simulation of the July 1997 flood waves in the Vseminka experimental catchment fit better with the observed waves. All the topographical and morphological data were analysed and prepared for the KINFIL model (particularly for the KINFIL 2 version), using GIS facilities. Thus the KINFIL 2 version can be applied in future for design discharge assessment when simulating scenarios of various land uses expressing the model parameters. and Příspěvek analyzuje povodňové případy implementace hydrologického modelu KINFIL, používaného na malých povodích, kde hospodárské využití pozemku a antropogenní vlivy hrají podstatnou roli. Záměrem příspevku je informovat o možnostech využití GIS při fragmentaci malých povodí za účelem zpřesnění vstupních dat pro hydrologický model KINFIL. Kombinace GIS a KINFIL, který je fyzikálně založen na teorii infiltrace a transformace přímého odtoku kinematickou vlnou, poskytuje nástroj pro analýzu jak historických srážko-odtokových případů, tak hypotetických scénářových simulací. Model KINFIL využívá dříve odvozených vztahů mezi hodnotami čísel odtokových křivek CN a „koncepčních“ půdních parametrů (nasycené hydraulické vodivosti a sorptivity) spolu s parametry transformace na testovaném povodí Všeminky na východní Morave. Byly testovány dvě modelové verze: KINFIL 1 a KINFIL 2. Infiltrační část modelu je v obou verzích stejná. Verze KINFIL 1 je založena na schematické geometrizaci, kde povodí je V-tvaru a do hlavního toku je sváděn přímý odtok zobou stran z paralelně uspořádaných desek a každá z těchto desek je sériově (kaskádově) členěna podle sklonu svahů. Takto definované desky ale nemusí plně respektovat členění na subpovodí. Naproti tomu nový přístup KINFIL 2, který za účelem fragmentace povodí využívá prostředků GIS, plně respektuje průběh říční sítě povodí a její členění na subpovodí. Základem pro získání požadovaných parametrů modelu KINFIL 2 je digitální model reliéfu terénu (DEM). Tato verze je geograficky lépe založená a výsledky simulovaných průtoků povodně z července 1997 na experimentálním povodí Všeminky se lépe shodují s průtoky měřenými.
Knowing the extent of inundation areas for individual N-year flood events, the specific flood scenarios, and having an idea about the depths and velocities in the longitudinal or transverse water course profile provided by hydrodynamic models is of key importance for protecting peoples’ lives and mitigating damage to property. Input data for creating the watercourse computational geometry are crucial for hydrodynamic models. Requirements for input data vary with respect to the hydrodynamic model used. One-dimensional (1D) hydrodynamic models in which the computing track is formed by cross-sectional profiles of the channel are characterized by lower requirements for input data. In two-dimensional (2D) hydrodynamic models, a digital terrain model is needed for the entire area studied. Financial requirements of the project increase with regard to the input data and the model used. The increase is mainly due to the high cost of the geodetic surveying of the stream channel. The paper aims at a verification and presentation of the suitability of using hydrological measurements in developing a schematization (geometry) of water courses based on topographic data gained from aerial laser scanning provided by the Czech Office for Surveying, Mapping and Cadastre. Taking into account the hydrological measurement during the schematization of the water course into the hydrodynamic model consists in the derivation of flow rate achieved at the time of data acquisition using the method of aerial laser scanning by means of hydrological analogy and in using the established flow rate values as a basis for deepening of the digital terrain model from aerial laser scanning data. Thus, the given principle helps to capture precisely the remaining part of the channel profile which is not reflected in the digital terrain model prepared by the method of aerial laser scanning and fully correct geometry is achieved for the hydrodynamic model. and Znalost rozsahu záplavových území pro jednotlivé N-leté povodňové události a konkrétní povodňové scénáře, včetně získané představy o hloubkách a rychlostech v podélném či příčném profilu vodního toku, které poskytují hydrodynamické modely, zaujímá výsadní postavení z pohledu ochrany životů a zmírnění škod na majetku občanů. Stěžejním faktorem pro tvorbu hydrodynamických modelů jsou vstupní data pro vytvoření výpočetní geometrie vodního toku. Požadavky na vstupní data se liší s ohledem na použitý hydrodynamický model. Jednorozměrné (1D) hydrodynamické modely se vyznačují nižšími požadavky na vstupní data, kdy výpočetní trať je tvořena příčnými profily koryta, naproti tomu u dvourozměrných (2D) hydrodynamických modelů je nutné sestavit pro celé řešené území digitální model reliéfu. S ohledem na vstupní data a použitý model roste i finanční náročnost celého projektu. Nárůst finančních prostředků je způsoben především vysokými náklady na geodetické zaměření koryta toku. Cílem příspěvku bylo ověřit a prezentovat vhodnost využití hydrologického měření při tvorbě schematizace (geometrie) vodních toků na podkladě výškopisných dat získaných metodou leteckého laserového skenování, které zabezpečuje Český úřad zeměměřický a katastrální. Zohlednění hydrologického měření při schematizaci vodního toku do hydrodynamického modelu spočívá v odvození dosaženého průtoku v době pořizování dat metodou leteckého laserového skenování a takto stanovené průtoky lze využít jako podklad pro zahloubení digitálního modelu reliéfu připraveného z dat leteckého laserového skenování. Daný princip tak nahrazuje zbývající část profilu koryta, která není metodou leteckého laserového skenování v digitálním modelu reliéfu reflektována. Je tak dosaženo požadované geometrie koryta vodního toku, jehož kapacita je shodná s hodnotou průtoku v přirozeném korytě.
With regard to the water quality changes, the area of the Czech part of the Elbe River basin is extraordinarily dynamic. In the 20th century it experienced an enormous increase of load of pollution. Since the beginning of the 1990´s due to the political and economical changes we have witnessed a particularly intensive decrease in the emission volume and a related increase in water quality of watercourses. However, positive changes in the pollution load balance have occurred mainly in the biggest watercourses and these changes have not been accompanied by similar development in the whole river system. Using a newly created classification methodology the basic models of dynamics of water quality changes in the Elbe River basin have been derived. Based on GIS geostatistical analysis, regions with analogous water quality development trends have been defined for selected parameters and critical areas have been identified. It has become apparent that the prevailing part of the Elbe River basin has been experiencing a gradual increase in pollution. In addition, after a previous decrease, a number of watercourses experienced a recurrence of the increase in load. These areas are priorities for further development and the control of surface water protection against pollution. and Oblast české části povodí Labe je z hlediska změn kvality vody mimořádně dynamická. Díky intenzivnímu vývoji antropogenních aktivit a společenským změnám zaznamenala v průběhu 20. století nejprve enormní nárůst zátěže znečištěním, od počátku 90. let jsme naopak svědky mimořádně intenzivního snížení objemu emisí a souvisejícího zvyšování jakosti vody v tocích. Pozitivní změny v látkové bilanci jsou však soustředěny především na největší toky – Labe a Vltavu a nejsou doprovázeny obdobným vývojem v celém povodí. Pomocí nově vytvořené metodiky klasifikace vývoje kvality vody prezentované v článku byly na základě geostatistické analýzy sestaveny základní modely časové dynamiky změn kvality vody v povodí Labe. Pro jednotlivé ukazatele byly na základě analýzy v prostředí GIS vymezeny regiony s analogickými trendy vývoje kvality povrchových vod a identifikovány kritické oblasti. Ukazuje se, že přes pozitivní vývoj jakosti vody v hlavních sídelních a průmyslových regionech v 90. letech převažující část povodí Labe stále zaznamenává v jednotlivých ukazatelích postupný nárůst znečištění, na řadě toků navíc po předchozím poklesu dochází k opětovnému nárůstu zátěže. Tyto oblasti představují prioritu pro další rozvoj a řízení ochrany povrchových vod před znečištěním.
Estimation of discharge from ungauged catchments based on rainfall-runoff analysis is a very frequent task in engineering hydrology. Very often, design discharges are needed for streams or small rivers where no streamflow data is available (river training works, culverts, small hydropower plants, etc). This study uses a well established lumped hydrologic rainfall-runoff model to compare two different approaches in data preparation. The traditional method of manual obtainment of catchment parameters was compared to a more contemporary methodology using automation with geographic information systems, digital terrain models and available datasets, with an emphasis on open-source tools and freely available datasets. Both techniques were implemented on more than 100 catchments in Serbia to calculate storm runoff response. The results show minor differences that are insignificant compared to the time and resources saved with the automated techniques. The use of such automated methods enables the hydrologist to direct more attention to other factors that influence discharge even more than catchment parameters, such as rainfall, soil and land use data.
About 75% of water for irrigation in Bangladesh comes from groundwater. As the crop yield is directly related to quality of water used for irrigation, an assessment of groundwater suitability for irrigation is essential for the growth of food production and poverty eradication. An attempt has been made in this paper to study the suitability of groundwater for irrigation in Bangladesh. Geographic information system (GIS) is used for the processing of groundwater quality data collected from 113 locations sporadically distributed over the country and the preparation of groundwater quality maps. The result shows that groundwater of the southwestern part of Bangladesh, which comprises 22.5% area of the country, is highly affected by salinity and sodium hazards. Groundwater in 10.54% area of the country is also contaminated by Arsenic above the permissible level recommended for irrigation. and Okolo 75 % vody pre závlahy v Bangladeši pochádza z podzemných vôd. Pretože úroda priamo závisí od kvality závlahovej vody, posúdenie vhodnosti vody pre závlahy je podstatné pre produkciu potravín a odstránenie chudoby. V štúdii je prezentovaný pokus o zhodnotenie vhodnosti podzemnej vody pre závlahy v Bangladeši. Na spracovanie údajov o kvalite podzemnej vody zo 113 lokalít rozmiestnených sporadicky po krajine a na prípravu máp kvality podzemnej vody sa použil geografický informačný systém (GIS). Výsledky naznačujú, že podzemná voda v juhozápadnej časti krajiny zaberajúcej 22,5 % jej plochy je silne ohrozená zasolenosťou a obsahom sodíka. Podzemná voda na ploche 10,54 % krajiny je tiež kontaminovaná obsahom arzénu nad prípustnú hranicu pre závlahovú vodu.
The number of little owls, Athene noctua is decreasing in many European countries. In order to evaluate causes of the decline in Poland, habitat preferences of this species were analysed. Using GIS methods, 25 settled territories of the little owl, recorded during field surveys between 2000 and 2005, were compared with 50 unsettled locations. It was found that the proportion of built-up areas was higher in the occupied territories than in the random locations. No differences in grassland, forest and field proportion, habitat diversity and edge length were recorded between the occupied, and the random locations. The amount of forest and the proportion of built up areas appeared to be the best predictor of the occurrence of the little owl. Next, habitat use at 7 additional territories, which were occupied by little owls in 1980–90s and later abandoned, was analysed. In 2006, as compared to the period 1980–90, numbers of pollard willows decreased, whereas the number of buildings increased in these territories. The overall results lead to a conclusion that the little owl shows a high degree of habitat plasticity. The decrease of the area of grasslands and numbers of pollard willows is not likely to explain the population decline of the species.
The Eurasian otter is one of the most endangered mammals in Italy and its distribution is now restricted in two isolated portions in southern Italy. However, in recent times, this species has shown a tendency to expand its range, especially northwards. It is therefore important to identify suitable areas on the border of its expansion range where the species can establish and disperse, so that these areas can be targeted for conservation actions. To this aim, the distribution, quality and connectivity of habitats of seven river catchments located in the northern portion of the current otter range in Italy were assessed. Catchments included both rivers where the otter currently occurs and where it is likely to expand in the short-medium term. An expert-based Habitat Suitability (HS) model was developed and validated using otter presence-absence data based on standard field surveys. Fine scale riverbank land cover, extra-riparian coarse scale land cover, altitude, bank slope, and human disturbance were considered as the main factors in the HS model. These variables were available or newly created in the form of digital maps (layers) and the HS model was built by sequentially filtering these layers. Connectivity was assessed within and between river basins through landscape algorithms by taking into account variables that could influence otter dispersal.Tthe results indicated that the seven rivers considered are heterogeneous both in terms of habitat suitability and in terms of connectivity. Among these, one river in particular (the river Volturno), where otters are currently present, showed one of the largest extensions of suitable habitats and the best connectivity both within the river and between the river and the neighbouring catchments, suggesting that this river could play a strategic role in the survival and expansion of otters in the surrounding areas.
Several series of available environmental (land use/land cover, agriculture, soil, climate) variables are used in exploratory models to test their use for successful prediction of red-legged partridge (Alectoris rufa L.) abundance in spring. A Geographic Information System and stepwise multiple regression analysis are used to show and predict distribution of this population parameter in an agricultural region of southern France. High spring abundance was observed to be distributed mainly in the central and north-western part of the study area. Two partial models, land use/land cover and agriculture, and a complete model with land use and temperature variables are the most significant and more accurate than any others. The complete model is the best model (lowest Akaike Information Criterion and highest Akaike weight). The potential abundance obtained from this best model shows communes with high Kilometric Abundance Indices (KAI), mainly located in the northwestern part of the region. Partridge abundance was unevenly or irregularly distributed across the study area, which is typical of wildlife species inhabiting complex and changing landscapes limited by various sources of human pressure, such as agriculture, urbanization and game management. A game tool is provided using potential spring abundance to plan the harvest quotas two months before opening the hunting season.
This study is focused on the snowmelt runoff simulations for the upper Hron basin using dte degree-day approach of the SRM model. Our effort was directed at the determination and selection of input data and model parameters using GIS tools. The aim of this paper was to simulate the snowmelt runoff using only regularly measured data, without their special pre-processing. Comparison between measured and computed runoff indicates that the SRM model could be used for the snowmelt runoff simulation for the upper Hron basin. Results for the smaller upper Telgart subbasin were not so acceptable, because of lack of representative input data, which is essential for the determination of the snow depletion curve. and Práca je venovaná simulácii odtoku zo snehu pre povodie horného Hrona s využitím modelu odtoku zo snehu - SRM. Hlavným cieľom práce bolo posúdiť a otestovať možnosti výberu a určenia vstupných údajov a kalibrácie parametrov do modelu SRM s využitím dát pravidelne meraných v sieti meteorologických staníc. Z výsledkov vyplýva, že SRM veľmi dobre simuluje prietok pre povodie horného Hrona ako celku. Simulácia pre povodie horného Hrona rozdeleného na dve výškové zóny, a najmä pre čiastkové povodie Hrona po Telgárt, nedosiahla akceptovateľné výsledky. Tento fakt spôsobili najmä nedostatečné vstupné údaje. Kritickým sa ukázali najmä vstupné informácie o priestorovom rozložení snehovej pokrývky.
