Sunflowers were treated with mixing proportions of NaCl, Na2SO4, NaHCO3, and Na2CO3. Effects of salt and saltalkaline mixed stress on growth, photosynthesis, chlorophyll fluorescence, and contents of inorganic ions and organic acids of sunflower were compared. The growth of sunflower decreased with increasing salinity. The contents of photosynthetic pigments did not decrease under salt stress, but their contents decreased sharply under
salt-alkaline mixed stress. Net photosynthetic rates, stomatal conductance and intercellular CO2 concentration decreased obviously, with greater reductions under salt-alkaline mixed stress than under salt one. Fluorescence parameters showed no significant differences under salt stress. However, maximal efficiency of PSII photochemistry, photochemical quenching coefficient, electron transport rate, and actual PSII efficiency significantly decreased but non-photochemical quenching increased substantially under salt-alkaline mixed stress. Under salt-alkaline mixed stress, sunflower leaves maintained a low Na+- and high K+ status; this may be an important feature of sunflower tolerance to salinity. Analysis of the mechanism of ion balance showed that K+ but not Na+ was the main inorganic cation in sunflower leaves. Our results indicated that the change in organic acid content was opposite to the change of Cl-, and the contribution of organic acid to total charge in sunflower leaves under both stresses decreased with increasing salinity. This may be a special adaptive response to stresses for sunflower. An early senescence (es) mutant of rice Oryza sativa L. with progressing death of most of leaves before heading stage was identified in the field in Hainan province. After tillering stage, the brown striations were found in the base of green leaves randomly, and then expanded to whole leaves. No fungi, bacteria, and viruses were detected in the brown striations suggesting that it was a genetic mutant. The ultrastructure of leaf cells at the site of brown striations showed breakdown of chloroplast thylakoid membrane structures and other organelles, and condensation of the cytoplasm at severe senescence stage. Australian carnivorous pitcher plant Cephalotus follicularis Labill. produces two types of leaves. During the spring time, the plant produces a foliage type of noncarnivorous leaf called lamina. Later, the second type of leaf is produced - carnivorous pitcher. Using simultaneous measurements of gas exchange and chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence photosynthetic efficiency of these two distinct forms of leaves were compared. In addition stomatal density, an important component of gas exchange, and Chl concentration were also determined. Pitcher trap had lower net photosynthetic rate
(PN) in comparison to noncarnivorous lamina, whereas the rate of respiration (RD) was not significantly different. This was in accordance with lower stomatal density and Chl concentration in the pitcher trap. On the other hand maximum quantum yield of PSII (Fv/Fm) and effective quantum yield of photochemical energy conversion in PSII (ΦPSII) was not significantly different. Nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) was significantly higher in the lamina at higher irradiance. These data are in accordance with hypothesis that changing the leaf shape in carnivorous plants to make it a better trap generally makes it less efficient at photosynthesis. However, the pitcher of Cephalotus had much higher PN than it was expected from the data set of the genus Nepenthes. Because it is not possible to optimize for contrasting function such as photosynthesis and carnivory, it is hypothesized that Cephalotus pitchers are less elaborated for carnivorous function than the pitchers of Nepenthes. and A. Photosynthetic properties of carnivorous plants have not been well characterized and the extent to which photosynthesis contributes to carbon gain in most carnivorous plants is also largely unknown. We investigated the photosynthetic light response in three carnivorous plant species, Drosera rotundifolia L. (sundew; circumpolar and native to northern British Columbia, Canada), Sarracenia leucophylla Rafin. ('pitcher-plant'; S.E. United States), and D. capensis L. (sundew; Cape Peninsula, South Africa), using portable gas-exchange systems to explore the capacity for photosynthetic carbon gain in carnivorous plant species. Maximal photosynthetic rates (1.32-2.22 μmol m-2 s-1 on a leaf area basis) and saturating light intensities (100 to 200 μmol PAR m-2 s-1) were both low in all species and comparable to shade plants. Field or greenhouse-grown D. rotundifolia had the highest rates of photosynthesis among the three species examined. Dark respiration, ranging from -1.44 (S. leucophylla) to -3.32
(D. rotundifolia) μmol m-2 s-1 was high in comparison to photosynthesis in the species examined. Across greenhouse-grown plants, photosynthetic light compensation points scaled with light-saturated photosynthetic rates. Plants are constantly subjected to variations in their surrounding environment, which affect their functioning in different ways. The influence of environmental factors on the physiology of plants depends on several factors including the intensity, duration and frequency of the variation of the external stimulus. Water deficit is one of the main limiting factors for agricultural production worldwide and affects many physiological processes in plants. The aim of this study was to analyse the effects of different rates of induced water deficit on the leaf photosynthetic responses of soybean (Glycine max L.) and cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L.). The plants were subjected to two types of water deficit induction: a rapid induction (RD) by which detached leaves were dehydrated by the exposure to air under controlled conditions and a slow induction (SD) by suspending irrigation under greenhouse conditions. The leaf gas exchange, chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence, and relative water content (RWC) were analysed throughout the water-deficit induction. V. unguiculata and G. max demonstrated similar dehydration as the soil water percentage declined under SD, with V. unguiculata showing a greater stomatal sensitivity to reductions in the RWC. V. unguiculata plants were more sensitive to water deficit, as determined by all of the physiological parameters when subjected to RD, and the net photosynthetic rate (PN) was sharply reduced in the early stages of dehydration. After the plants exposed to the SD treatment were rehydrated, V. unguiculata recovered 65% of the PN in relation to the values measured under the control conditions (initial watering state), whereas G. max recovered only 10% of the PN. The photosynthetic performances of regenerated protoplasts of Bryopsis hypnoides, which were incubated in seawater for 1, 6, 12, and 24 h, were studied using chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence and oxygen measurements. Results showed that for the regenerated protoplasts, the pigment content, the ratios of photosynthetic rate to respiration rate, the maximal photosystem II (PSII) quantum yield (Fv/Fm), and the effective PSII quantum yield (ΦPSII) decreased gradually along with the regeneration progress, indicated that during 24 h of regeneration there was a remarkable reduction in PSII activity of those newly formed protoplasts. We assumed that during the cultivation progress the regenerated protoplasts had different photosynthetic vigor, with only some of them able to germinate and develop into mature thalli. The above results only reflected the photosynthetic features of the regenerated protoplasts at each time point as a whole, rather than the actual photosynthetic activity of individual aggregations. Further investigation suggested a relationship between the size of regenerated protoplasts and their viability. The results showed that the middle-sized group (diameter 20-60 μm) retained the largest number of protoplasts for 24 h of growth. The changes in Fv/Fm and ΦPSII of the four groups of differently sized protoplasts (i.e. < 20, 20-60, 60-100, and > 100 μm) revealed that the protoplasts 20-60 μm in diameter had the highest potential activity of the photosynthetic light energy absorption and conversion for several hours. and F. Pasture soils in the Amazon become unsustainable after a short period of use, typically being replaced by emergent secondary vegetation (capoeira). The aim of this research was to investigate the photosynthetic capacity and water use in the most common tree species (Vismia japurensis, Vismia cayennensis, Bellucia grossularioides, Laetia procera, and Goupia glabra) in successional chronosequence. This study was carried out in secondary vegetation area with ages that vary between 1 and 19 years. Responses of gas exchange were determined during different periods of precipitation. The gas exchange decreased with advancing age of the vegetation (1-19 years), except for G. glabra. Negative relationships of PNmax as a function of aging observed for V. japurensis, V. cayennensis, B. grossularioides, and L. procera exhibited r2 equal to 0.59, 0.42, 0.33, and 0.58, respectively. The species of Vismia showed higher values for photosynthetic parameters in relation to other species across the chronosequence. Overall, there were differences in gas exchange only for some species between the different periods of precipitation. Therefore, our results suggest a distinct pattern of photosynthetic responses to species in early succession. Light decrease can exert a decisive role to reduce the photosynthetic rates in secondary succession species. Gas exchange of Carex cinerascens was carried out in Swan Islet Wetland Reserve (29°48' N, 112°33' E). The diurnal photosynthetic course of C. cinerascens in the flooded and the nonflooded conditions were analyzed through the radial basis function (RBF) neural network approach to evaluate the influences of environmental variables on the photosynthetic activity. The inhibition of photosynthesis induced by soil flooding can be attributed to the reduced stomatal conductance (gs), the deficiency of Rubisco regeneration and decreased chlorophyll (Chl) content. As revealed by analysis of artificial neural network (ANN) models, gs was the dominant factor in determining the photosynthesis response. Weighting analysis showed that the effect of water pressure deficit (VPD) > air temperature (T) > CO2 concentration (Ca) > air humidity (RH) > photosynthetical photon flux density (PPFD) for the nonflooded model, whereas for the flooded model, the factors were ranked in the order VPD > C a > RH > PPFD > T. The different photosynthetic response of C. cinerascens found between the nonflooded and flooded conditions would be useful to evaluate the flood tolerance at plant species level. and M. Li ... A portable open gas-exchange system (Li-6400, Li-Cor, Inc., Lincoln, NE, USA) has been widely used for the measurement of net gas exchanges and calibration/parameterization of leaf models. Measurement errors due to diffusive leakage rates of water vapor (LW) and CO2 (LC) between inside and outside of the leaf chamber, and the inward dark transpiration rate (DW) and dark respiration rate (DC) released from the leaf under the gasket, can be significant. Rigorous model-based approaches were developed for estimating leakage coefficients of water vapor (KW) and CO2 (KC) and correcting for the combination of these errors. Models were based on mass balance equations and the Dusty Gas Model for a ternary gas mixture of water vapor, CO2, and dry air. Experiments were conducted using two Li-6400 systems with potato and soybean leaves. Results indicated that models were reliable for estimating KW and KC, and the values varied with instrument, chamber size, gasket condition, and leaf structure. A thermally killed leaf should be used for this determination. Measurement error effects on parameterization of the Farquhar et al. (1980) model as determined by PN/C i curves were substantial and each parameter had its own sensitivity to measurement errors. Net photosynthetic rate (PN) measured at elevated CO2 concentration (Ce), ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco), and nitrogen (N) content in rice leaves decreased significantly after exposure to long term Ce. The reduction in PN, Rubisco, and leaf N at Ce was similar for the last fully expanded leaf blade (LFELB) and expanding leaf blade (ELB). Spatial leaf N content in the ELB was highest in the zone of cell division, sharply declined as cell expansion progressed and gradually increased with cell maturation. Maximum reduction in spatial leaf N and Rubisco content was found at Ce only within cell expansion and maturation zones. The spatial leaf N content correlated well with the amount of Rubisco synthesized during leaf expansion, suggesting that N deposition into the expanding leaf blade may be the key for Rubisco synthesis and possibly photosynthetic acclimation to Ce. and S.
