The cuticular structure of juveniles of several oribatids of different families with wrinkled cuticles were compared: Hermannia gibba, Tectocepheus velatus, Scutovertex minutus, Achipteria coleoptrata and Eupelops occultus. Both the surface and internal structures of the "plissée" were studied. Light microscopy revealed several patterns in mites studied with Masson's triple stain and these results were supported by TEM. Although the "plissée" looks similar at the body surface, the structure and ultrastructure differ among groups. Some types of wrinkling is supported by small muscles, probably for changing body shape. Differences in the structure of the cuticle of the prosoma and opisthosoma were observed. The differences in the wrinkling in the cuticle in diferent lines is associated with change in the body shape in response to different moisture conditions.
Autor načrtává fragment z politické biografie předního komunistického intelektuála a politika Zdeňka Nejedlého (1878–1962), v němž usiluje vystihnout jeho roli v kulturní politice Československa po roce 1945, zvláště po roce 1948, a propojit ji s pohledem na osobní stránky jeho života. Úvodem ho představuje jako respektovaného historika a hudebního vědce, účastníka uměnovědných i politických polemik, který se v meziválečném období stále silněji sbližoval s radikální levicí a získal si značnou autoritu svou účastí v boji proti fašismu, především jako člen exilového vedení KSČ v Moskvě (vstoupil do ní zde v roce 1939). Tomu odpovídala jeho pozice v poválečném Československu, kde vystřídal funkce ministra školství, ministra práce a sociálních věcí, prvního předsedy Československé akademie věd atd. Nejedlý po roce 1945 vystupoval nejednou jako přední tvůrce koncepce kulturní politiky Komunistické strany Československa a její úspěšný propagátor, nebyl však tak silným mocenským hráčem jako ministr informací Václav Kopecký (do roku 1952) a jeho hlavní konkurent na tomto poli, vedoucí kulturního a propagačního oddělení Ústředního výboru KSČ Gustav Bareš, v jejichž rukou spočívaly hlavní kompetence a mechanismy řízení kulturní politiky. Představy Zdeňka Nejedlého o kultuře byly poměrně prosté – měla být lidová, aktuální, realistická, programová a měla se opírat o národní tradice, které ovšem interpretoval selektivně (s důrazem na husitství a národní obrození) a politicky účelově (v duchu ideologické indoktrinace společnosti. Právě díky úsilí o zachování zřetelnější kontinuity „budovatelské“ kultury s minulostí, jejímž zdrojem měly být „pokrokové“ osobnosti a dílo Bedřicha Smetany, Aloise Jiráska a dalších obrozenců, se přiklání autor k těm interpretům (Alexej Kusák), kteří zařazují Nejedlého spíše mezi umírněné politiky komunistické strany, představující po únoru 1948 určitou alternativu těm proudům, které hlásaly radikální „očistu“ kulturního dědictví. Vzhledem ke svému slabšímu postavení v mocenské hierarchii a také kvůli silné loajalitě vůči platnému stranickému kurzu se však k veřejnému střetu s radikály v komunistické straně odhodlal jen výjimečně (například když se vzpíral mechanickému přenášení „sovětských zkušeností“ do československého školství). Autor se v této souvislosti dotýká Nejedlého vztahů s některými umělci a politiky (zejména Václavem Kopeckým) a přináší svědectví o projevech devótnosti vůči jeho osobě, přijímaných zřejmě s požitkem. Zaobírá se také jeho vážnými zdravotními problémy v padesátých letech, které limitovaly Nejedlého vliv na, kulturní politiku, a psychickým stavem, poznamenaným depresemi a úzkostí z případného vlastního zatčení. V závěrečné části se autor zamýšlí nad tím, proč se dílo Zdeňka Nejedlého v šedesátých letech minulého století nestalo inspirací pro snahy o reformu socialismu v duchu národně specifického vývoje, jež vyvrcholily hnutím „pražského jara“ v roce 1968. Kromě toho, že Nejedlého pozdně obrozenecký hodnotový a estetický svět v té době již beznadějně zastaral, působila patrně především skutečnost, že Zdeněk Nejedlý počátkem padesátých let pomáhal zdůvodnit politické procesy a byl tudíž vnímám jako jeden ze symbolů nejhorších projevů stalinského režimu. Nikdy rovněž nevytvořil alternativní koncepci, která by se v podstatných rysech vymykala oficiální stalinské doktríně kultury a kulturní politiky., The article is an outline of a fragment of the political biography of the leading Communist intellectual and politician Zdeněk Nejedlý (1878–1962), in which the author tries to depict Nejedlý’s role in making Czechoslovak policy on the arts and culture after the Liberation in May 1945 and, particularly, after the Communist takeover of February 1948. He then seeks to link this role with the personal side of Nejedlý’s life. He presents Nejedlý as a respected historian and musicologist and as a participant in debates on politics and the arts, who in the interwar period had increasingly inclined towards the radical leftwing and gained considerable authority owing to his participation in the struggle against Nazi Germany, particularly as a member of the Communist leadership-in-exile in Moscow (having joined the Party in 1939). A consequence of this was his position in post-war Czechoslovakia, where he held a number of posts, including Minister of Education, Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, and the first Chairman of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. After the Liberation Nejedlý was often a leading maker of Communist policy on the arts and culture in Czechoslovakia and its successful propagandist. Nevertheless, he was not as strong a player as Václav Kopecký, Minister of Information, who stayed in power till 1952, or Gustav Bareš, Head of the Cultural and Propaganda Department of the Central Committee of the CPCz, Kopecký’s main competitor in the field, both of whom had the main jurisdiction and controlled the mechanisms for determining cultural policy. Nejedlý’s ideas about culture and the arts were relatively simple – it should be “of the people” (lidová), relevant to the times, realistic, part of a programme, and based on national tradition, which, however, he interpreted selectively (with an emphasis on Hussitism and the National Revival) and with a political purpose (in the spirit of the ideological indoctrination of society). Owing to Nejedlý’s efforts to maintain a clearer continuity between the culture of the “builders of Socialism” (budovatelská kultura) and the past, the source of which was supposed to be “progressive” figures and the works of the composer Bedřich Smetana, the novelist Alois Jirásek, and other Revivalists, the author of the present article shares much with interpretation of scholars like Alexej Kusák, ranking Nejedlý among the moderate politicians of the CPCz, who after the February 1948 takeover represented a certain alternative to those pushing for a radical “purge” of Czech cultural heritage. In view of his weak position, and in the power hierarchy and, on the other hand, his strong loyalty to the Party line, Nejedlý only rarely clashed with Party radicals publicly (for example, when he opposed the automatic transfer of “Soviet experience” to the Czechoslovak school system). The author, in this connection, touches upon Nejedlý’s relationships with some artists and politicians, particularly Kopecký, and provides evidence of displays of devotion towards Nejedlý, which he seems to have welcomed. The author also discusses Nejedlý’s serious health problems in the 1950s, which limited his influence on making policy in culture and the arts, and his psychological state, which was marked by depressions and anxiety about his possible arrest. In the last part of the article the author reflects on why Nejedlý’s work in the 1960s had not inspired the attempts at the reform of socialism in a specifically Czech form, which resulted in the “Prague Spring” of 1968. Apart from the fact that Nejedlý’s late Revivalist values and aesthetics in this period had become hopelessly outdated, this was so, he argues, probably because Nejedlý had helped to justify the show trials in the early 1950s and was therefore perceived as a symbol of the worst excesses of the Stalinist régime. Nor did he ever come up with an alternative concept that would have essentially diverted from official, Stalinist doctrine on the arts and culture.
The article shows the Bohemian lands in the 17th century as mediated by travelogues of English provenance, in particular travel diaries written both for personal use only and to be later published. Attention is mainly focused on the religious situation in Bohemia and Moravia and its transformation in the studied period in the context of the denomination of the English visitors. The paper further briefly describes individual travellers from England, who would come to the European continent for various reasons and would also visit the
Kingdom of Bohemia as part of this trip.
Slova „veřejný“ a „soukromý“ se v římském právu objevují v různých souvislostech. Poslední dva tituly Digest obsahují definice a právní pravidla obecného významu.Na základě rozboru fragmentů sedmi římských klasických právníků, v jejichž textech jsou v uvedených titulech použity zkoumané termíny, je ukázáno, jak byly chápány v období největšího rozkvětu římského práva.„Soukromý“ (privatum/privatus) má ve zkoumaných textech v zásadě jednotný význam. Termín „veřejný“ (publicum/publicus) pak nabízí celou řadu různých variant.Někdy se jedná o veřejné právo, ale také o právo trestní, nebo je to něco, co souvisí se státem (příslušející státu, státní úřad, státní zájem, daně, břemeno ukládané ve prospěch státu, jednat jménem státu). Kromě toho se jedná také o různé druhy věcí – státní, jejichž vlastníkem je stát; obecní, které patří městu; ty, které mohou užívat úplně všichni. Slovo „veřejné“ pak také znamená, že něco bylo učiněno podle pravidel, tedy v souladu s právem (např. vyhlášení války), nebo je označením pro městskou radu i lidové shromáždění.Vždy tedy záleží na kontextu, v jakém je tento termín použit. and The words “public” and “private”, appear in Roman law in different contexts. The last two titles of Digest contain definitions and rules of law in general.Based on the analysis of fragments from the works of seven Roman classical jurists, where these surveyed terms are used, it is shown how they
were understood during the heyday of Roman law. The word “private” (privatum/privatus) has in the analyzed texts essentially the same meaning. The term “public” (publicum/publicus) then offers a variety of different options. Sometimes it is public law, but also criminal law, or it is state-related
(belonging to the state, state authority, state interest, taxes, a charge in favour of the state, to act on behalf of the state). In addition, it also has different meanings – the things owned by the state; things owned by the community; things which belong to the city; things that everyone can enjoy. The word “public” then also means that something has been done according to the rules, therefore, in accordance with the law (e.g. a declaration of war) or bears the name of the City Council and People’s Assembly. Thus it always depends on the context in which the term is used.
Autorka sleduje, jaké vzpomínky si ženy deportované nacisty do Terezína uchovaly na pobyt v tamním židovském ghettu a jakými mechanismy se tyto reflexe – odlišné od vzpomínek mužů – utvářely. Středobodem jejího výzkumu jsou způsoby adaptace a vyrovnávání se situací, jež si ženy v Terezíně vyvinuly. Analyzuje genderově utvářené stránky každodenního života a proměn rolí terezínských žen i to, jak se promítly do jejich příběhů v podobě, v jaké je známe dnes. Jádro jejího výzkumu je založeno na vzorku třiceti životopisných rozhovorů pořízených v devadesátých letech minulého století s ženami přeživšími pobyt v Terezíně a doplněno dalšími dobovými prameny. Tyto ženy zažily deportaci většinou v době, kdy jim bylo mezi dvaceti a třiceti roky, patřily ke střední třídě, byly asimilované, emancipované a většinou hovořily česky. Podle zjištění autorky byly mladé české vězeňkyně v terezínském ghettu vesměs nuceny opustit individualistický životní styl moderní nezávislé ženy, který vedly před deportací, a zaujmout silně genderově určenou, pouze podpůrnou úlohu, soustředěnou na rodinu a kolektiv. Dále autorka zkoumá vztah mezi posunem v sociální úloze žen, vytvářením sociálních sítí a skupin a šancemi žen na přežití. Vychází přitom z předpokladu, že analýza postavení žen konkrétně a genderu obecně pomáhá identifikovat mocenské vztahy v rámci komunity, která vznikla z donucení. and Women’s memories of their time interned in the Theresienstadt (Terezín) ghetto are different from those of men internees. But what are the memories and what are the mechanisms behind them? At the centre of the author’s research is the adaptation and coping mechanisms of women in Theresienstadt. What was their daily life there? Which roles did they take on? The author analyses gender-specific aspects of Czech-Jewish women’s lives in the ghetto, focusing on how they influenced their narratives as we know them today. The core of the research is based on a sample of thirty biographical interviews from the 1990s, combined with various contemporaneous sources. Having experienced the deportation chiefly in their twenties, they are representative of middle-class, assimilated, emancipated, mostly Czech-speaking women. For the most part these young inmates had to abandon their ways of life as modern, independent women, and made a shift towards performing strongly gendered, supportive roles, focusing on the family and the social group. The author examines the relationship between the shift in this social role, the formation of networks and groups, and their chances of survival. The analysis of the position of women in particular and of gender in general seeks to help us to understand the power relationships within this enforced community.
Kniha uznávaného amerického historika třetí říše patří ke klasickým pracím o německém wehramachtu. Autor se v ní zabývá především ideologickou indoktrinací Hitlerovy armády, sociálními vazbami uvnitř ní, válečnými zločiny a trestáním jejích příslušníků a konečně mechanismy sebeospravedlňování a poválečnou pamětí německých vojáků. Soud recenzenta o knize je výrazně pozitivní. and This is a review of the Czech translation of Hitler’s Army: Soldiers, Nazis, and War in the Third Reich (New York, 1992). The work, by the respected American historian Omer Bartov, is a classic among books on the Wehrmacht. In it, Bartov is concerned primarily with the ideological indoctrination of Hitler’s army, the social links within it, war crimes, and the punishment of Wehrmacht soldiers, and, ultimately, the mechanisms of self-justification and the post-war memories of German soldiers. The reviewer praises it highly.
Příspěvek mapuje počátky a rozvoj turistické výměny mezi Polskou lidovou republikou a Německou demokratickou republikou v oblasti Krkonoš, s přihlédnutím k turistickým poměrům na československé straně tohoto pohoří. Pro Krkonoše, které byly osídleny německým obyvatelstvem a těšily se tradičnímu zájmu turistů, znamenal historický přelom rok 1945, kdy se po nuceném vysídlení Němců naprosto změnilo národnostní složení obyvatel a Polsko nastoupilo cestu ke komunistickému režimu. Prakticky až do poloviny padesátých let se tato oblast pro zahraniční návštěvníky uzavřela. To se změnilo v roce 1956, kdy se v souvislosti s částečnou politickou liberalizací v zemi a s ohledem na očekávané finanční zisky prosadilo zpřístupňování Krkonoš (později i Sudet) a podpora turistického ruchu z Východu (zejména Československa) i Západu včetně Spolkové republiky Německo, s níž Polsko uzavřelo dohodu o slučování rozdělených rodin a jejíž občané pocházející z oblastí v Polsku toužili navštívit starou vlast. To vyvolalo nelibost vedoucích míst v Německé demokratické republice, která nicméně začala povolovat cesty svých občanů do dřívějších německých východních oblastí. Zatímco ve vztahu k turistům ze Spolkové republiky již koncem padesátých let v Polsku převážily politické obavy, takže byly jejich cesty opět podstatně omezeny, spolupráce s NDR v turistice se v šedesátých letech dále rozvíjela včetně zřizování společných turistických oblastí v Krkonoších (nedosáhla však takové intenzity jako mezi Československem a NDR, respektive Polskem a Československem). Autor na základě polského a východoněmeckého archivního materiálu nicméně poukazuje na politické a organizační problémy, které z toho plynuly. Podrobněji líčí nikoli ojedinělý incident z počátku šedesátých let, kdy skupina turistů z NDR v polských Krkonoších pobouřila místní obyvatele nacistickými projevy a způsobila pohraniční poplach svévolným výstupem na Sněžku, což bylo řešeno na nejvyšší politické úrovni. Organizační těžkosti spočívaly především v nedostatečné kapacitě polských ubytovacích zařízení a nízké úrovni služeb, což východoněmečtí turisté kriticky vnímali zvláště ve srovnání s poměry v českých Krkonoších. Nepodařilo se také dosáhnout toho, aby přítomnost turistů z NDR v Polsku pomohla k vytvoření obrazu „dobrého Němce“., This article charts out the emergence and development of tourism between the Polish People’s Republic and the German Democratic Republic in the area of the Giant Mountains (Karkonosze/Riesengebirge/Krkonoše), taking into consideration the conditions on the Czechoslovak side. For this area, which had been settled by Germans and was traditionally a popular tourist destination, the end of the Second World War was an historic turning-point. The subsequent expulsion of the Germans thoroughly changed the ethnic composition of the population and Poland set out on the path to become a Communist state. This area was closed to foreign visitors practically until the mid-1950s. That changed in 1956, when, in connection with partial political liberalization in the country and anticipated financial profit, the Giant Mountains area was made accessible (as were, later, the Sudeten Mountains) and state support was provided for tourism from both the East bloc (particularly Czechoslovakia) and the West, including the German Federal Republic. Poland signed an agreement with West Germany on the reuniting of separated families, since some West German citizens came from areas now in Poland and longed to visit their old home. Though East German leaders were at first displeased by this, they nonetheless began to allow their citizens to visit the erstwhile German areas further east. Whereas the authorities’ fears of the political repercussions of West German tourism predominated in Poland in the late 1950s, considerably restricting travel for them, collaboration in tourism with East Germany continued to develop in the 1960s, including the establishment of a joint tourist region in the Giant Mountains (though that was not as intense as between Czechoslovakia and East Germany or as between Poland and Czechoslovakia). Using Polish and East German archive records, the author nonetheless shows the political and organizational problems that arose from this. He discusses in greater detail an isolated incident from the early 1960s, when a group of East German tourists in the Giant Mountains of Poland outraged the local inhabitants with Nazi behaviour and caused alarm at the border by climbing Śnieżka Mountain without permission. This was then dealt with at the highest political level. There were organizational difficulties mainly in the insufficient capacity of Polish accommodations for tourists and the poor quality of services, which the East German tourists were critical of, particularly when they compared what was available in the Czech Giant Mountains. The presence of East German, and tourists in Poland did not help to create an image of the ‘good German’.
