Brassinosteroids (BRs) and polyamines, well-established growth regulators, play a key role in abiotic stress response in plants. In the present study, we examined the role of 24-epibrassinolide (EBL, an active BR) and/or putrescine (Put) in the salt-induced stress in cucumber. The 15-d-old plants were exposed to 100 mM NaCl and they were subsequently treated by exogenous EBL and/or Put. The salt stress reduced significantly plant growth and gas-exchange parameters, and increased proline content and electrolyte leakage in the leaves. Toxic effects induced by salt stress were completely overcome by the combination of EBL and Put. EBL and/or Put treatments improved the growth parameters of the NaCl-treated plants, such as shoot length, root length, fresh and dry mass. Seedlings of the hypoxia-sensitive cucumber cultivar were hydroponically grown under hypoxia for 7 d in the presence or absence of 24-epibrassinolide (EBR, 2.1 nM). Hypoxia significantly inhibited growth, while EBR partially counteracted this inhibition. Leaf net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, and water-use efficiency declined greatly, while the stomatal limitation value increased significantly. The maximum net photosynthetic rate was strongly reduced by hypoxia, indicating that stomatal limitation was not the only cause of the PN decrease. EBR markedly diminished the harmful effects of hypoxia on PN as well as on stomata openness. It also greatly stimulated CO2 fixation by the way of increasing the carboxylation capacity of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco), ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate regeneration, Rubisco activity, and the protection of Rubisco large subunit from degradation. Our data indicated that photosystem (PS) II was damaged by hypoxia, while EBR had the protective effect. EBR further increased nonphotochemical quenching that could reduce photodamage of the PSII reaction center. The proportion of absorbed light energy allocated for photochemical reaction (P) was reduced, while both nonphotochemical reaction dissipation of light energy and imbalanced partitioning of excitation energy between PSI and PSII increased. EBR increased P and alleviated this imbalance. The results suggest that both stomatal and nonstomatal factors limited the photosynthesis of cucumber seedlings under hypoxia. Anthropogenic activities and improper uses of phosphate fertilizers have led to an increase in cadmium concentrations in agricultural soils. Brassinosteroids are steroid hormones that are rapidly assimilated and metabolised with beneficial roles in physiological and biochemical processes in plants. Our aim was to ascertain whether exogenous treatment with 24-epibrassinolide (EBR) can mitigate the Cd toxicity, and whether this substance can reduce the Cd accumulation in plant tissues. Furthermore, the dose response to EBR was determined following exposure to Cd in Vigna unguiculata. The experiment was a completely randomised factorial design with two concentrations of Cd (0 and 500 μM) and three concentrations of EBR (0, 50, and 100 nM). Spraying plants exposed to Cd with EBR significantly reduced the concentrations of Cd and increased nutrient contents in all tissues. The EBR treatment caused significant enhancements in leaf, root, and total dry matter. Foliar application of EBR reduced the negative effects of Cd toxicity on chlorophyll fluorescence and gas exchange parameters. Pretreatment with EBR also increased contents of pigments in plants exposed to Cd, compared with the identical treatments without EBR. Cd elevated contents of oxidant compounds, inducing cell damages, while EBR significantly decreased the concentrations of these compounds. We confirmed that EBR mitigated the negative effects related to Cd toxicity, reduced the absorption and transport of Cd, and increased the contents of essential elements. The aim of study was to gain a deeper knowledge about local and systemic changes in photosynthetic processes and sugar production of pepper infected by Obuda pepper virus (ObPV) and Pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV). PSII efficiency, reflectance, and gas exchange were measured 48 and/or 72 h after inoculation (hpi). Sugar accumulation was checked 72 hpi and 20 d after inoculation (as a systemic response). Inoculation of leaves with ObPV led to appearance of hypersensitive necrotic lesions (incompatible interaction), while PMMoV caused no visible symptoms (compatible interaction). ObPV (but not PMMoV) lowered Fv/Fm (from 0.827 to 0.148 at 72 hpi). Net photosynthesis decreased in ObPV-infected leaves. In ObPV-inoculated leaves, the accumulation of glucose, fructose, and glucose-6-phosphate was accompanied with lowered sucrose, maltoheptose, nystose, and trehalose contents. Brassinosteroids (BRs) have been reported to counteract various stresses. We investigated effects of exogenously applied brassinosteroid, 24-epibrassinolide (EBR), and brassinosteroid-mimic compound, 7,8-dihydro-8α-20-hydroxyecdysone (DHECD), on the photosynthetic efficiency and yield of rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. Pathum Thani 1) under heat stress. Solutions (1 nM) of EBR and DHECD were separately sprayed onto foliage of individual rice plants during their reproductive stage. Five days after the application, the plants were transferred to the day/night temperature regime of 40/30°C for 7 days and then allowed to recover at normal temperature for 7 days. We demonstrated that both DHECD and EBR helped maintain the net photosynthetic rate. The DHECD and EBR application enhanced stomatal conductance, stomatal limitation, and water-use efficiency under the high-temperature regime. DHECD- and EBR-treated plants showed an increase in the nonphotochemical quenching that was lower than that in the control plants. Moreover, DHECD and EBR treatments maintained the maximal quantum efficiency of PSII photochemistry and the efficiency of excitation capture of the open PSII center. Furthermore, the treatments with DHECD or EBR resulted in higher chlorophyll content during the heat treatment compared with the control plants. The paddy field application of 1 nM EBR and/or 1 nM DHECD at the reproductive stage during the hot season could increase the rice yield, especially, the number of filled seeds. DHECD and EBR enhanced total soluble sugar and reducing sugar in straw and more starch was accumulated in rice seeds. Brassinosteroids (BRs), an important class of plant steroidal hormones, play a significant role in the amelioration of various biotic and abiotic stresses. 24-epibrassinolide (EBR), an active brassinosteroid, was applied exogenously in different concentrations to characterize a role of BRs in tolerance of melon (Cucumis melo L.) to high temperature (HT) stress and to investigate photosynthetic performance of HT-stressed, Honglvzaocui (HT-tolerant) and Baiyuxiang (HTsensitive), melon variety. Under HT, Honglvzaocui showed higher biomass accumulation and a lower index of heat injury compared with the Baiyuxiang. The exogenous application of 1.0 mg L-1 EBR, the most effective concentration, alleviated dramatically the growth suppression caused by HT in both ecotypes. Similarly, EBR pretreatment of HTstressed plants attenuated the decrease in relative chlorophyll content, net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, stomatal limitation, and water-use efficiency (WUE), as well as the maximal quantum yield of PSII photochemistry (Fv/Fm), the efficiency of excitation capture of open PSII center, the effective quantum yield of PSII photochemistry (ΦPSII), photochemical quenching coefficient, and the photon activity distribution coefficients of PSI (α). EBR pretreatment further inhibited the increase in intracellular CO2 concentration, leaf transpiration rate, minimal fluorescence of dark-adapted state, nonphotochemical quenching, thermal dissipation, and photon activity distribution coefficients of PSII.
