Achorovermis testisinuosus gen. et sp. n. (Digenea: Aporocotylidae) infects the heart of the smalltooth sawfish, Pristis pectinata Latham (Rhinopristiformes: Pristidae), in the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Specimens of the new genus, along with the other blood flukes that infect batoids are similar by having an inverse U-shaped intestine and a curving testis as well as by lacking tegumental spines. The new genus differs from all of the other blood flukes infecting batoids by having an elongate body (>50 × longer than wide), a testis having >100 curves, and an ovary wholly anterior to the uterus. It differs from Ogawaia glaucostegi Cutmore, Cribb et Yong, 2018, the only other blood fluke infecting a rhinopristiform, by having a body that is >50 × (vs <30 ×) longer than wide, a testis that is >75 × (vs <40 ×) longer than wide and has >100 (vs <70) curves, an ovary wholly anterior to (vs lateral and dorsal to) the seminal vesicle, a uterus wholly posterior to (vs overlapping and lateral to both) the testis and ovary, and a sinuous (vs convoluted) uterus. The new species joins a small group of chondrichthyan blood flukes that lack tegumental spines: O. glaucostegi, Orchispirium heterovitellatum Madhavi et Rao, 1970, Myliobaticola richardheardi Bullard et Jensen, 2008, Electrovermis zappum Warren et Bullard, 2019. Blood flukes infecting batoids are further unique by having a curving testis. That is, the blood flukes infecting species within Selachii are morphologically distinct from those infecting species within the Batoidea (excluding Gymnurahemecus bulbosus Warren et Bullard, 2019). Based on the morphological similarity, we suspect that the new species shares a recent common ancestor with O. glaucostegi. A cyanobacterium containing phycobiliproteins with far-red acclimation was isolated from Pozas Rojas, Cuatro Ciénegas, México. It was named Leptolyngbya CCM 4 after phylogenetic analysis and a description of its morphological characteristics. Leptolyngbya was grown in far-red light. Sucrose-gradient analysis of the pigments revealed two different colored bands of phycobiliproteins. A band at 60% sucrose was a phycocyanin containing phycobilisome; at 35% sucrose, a new type of phycobiliprotein absorbed at 710 nm. SDS-PAGE revealed the presence of two types of core-membrane linkers. Analysis of the hydrophobic pigments extracted from the thylakoid membranes revealed Chl a, d, and f. The ratio of Chl f/a was reversibly changed from 1:12-16 under far-red light to an undetectable concentration of Chl f under white light. V březnu 2012 podepsala Akademie věd ČR novou dohodu s mexickou Národní radou pro vědu a technologie (Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Technología - CONACYT) společně s prováděcím plánem, na jehož základě se začalo realizovat pět vědeckovýzkumných projektů vědců AV ČR s jejich mexickými kolegy - podrobněji viz AB 4/2012. Current data on reproductive biology and population dynamics of the acanthocephalans are scarce mainly in regions from the tropical Pacific. An analysis was done to identify possible factors that influence variation in infection levels of the acanthocephalan Pseudoleptorhynchoides lamothei Salgado-Maldonado, 1976 in its final host, the blue sea catfish Ariopsis guatemalensis (Günther, 1864), and describe its main reproductive traits. A total of 1,094 A. guatemalensis were collected from Tres Palos Lagoon from August 2014 to December 2015. Prevalence of P. lamothei varied from 1.47% to 38.33%, and mean abundance from 0.03 to 4.44 helminths per examined host. In female P. lamothei relative fecundity increased with total length. Temporal variations in P. lamothei infection levels were attributed mainly to changes in host feeding and reproductive behaviour in response to local environmental factors as climatic season, and variations in water temperature., Dolores I.
