Fascioliasis due to Fasciola hepatica (Linnaeus, 1758) is an endemic disease on the Northern Bolivian Altipiano, where human prevalences and intensities arc the highest known, sheep and cattle are the main reservoir hosts, and pigs and donkeys the secondary ones. Investigations were carried out to study the viability of metacercariae experimentally obtained from eggs shed by naturally infected Altiplanic sheep, cattle, pigs and donkeys. A total of 157 Wistar rats were infected with doses of 5, 10, 20 and 150 metacercariae. Metacercariae aged for different number of weeks were used to analyse the influence of age on their viability. The number of worms successfully developed in each rat was established by dissection. Results obtained show that metacercarial infectivity is dependent upon storage time, being lower when metacercariae arc older. The maximum longevity is 31 weeks using doses of 20 metacercariae per rat and 48 weeks with 150 metacercariae per rat, although in the latter case only a very low percentage of worms is recovered. Age-related infectivity of metacercariae from Altiplanic F. hepatica does not significantly differ from that of the liver fluke in lowlands of other countries. Concerning the influence of the isolate according to host species, results indicate that metacercarial viabilities of pig and donkey isolates are similar to the viabilities of metacercariae of sheep and cattle isolates. Thus, pig and donkey have a high transmission potential capacity concerning this aspect. This fact is of great importance for the control of human and animal fascioliasis in this highly endemic zone.
In this article the authors review the trends and differentials in mortality from self-inflicted injury and poisoning in the Czech Republic between the early 1970s and the present in terms of their socio-economic and demographic associations. They describe the sources of data on suicide and explore the possible extent of under-reporting of deaths from suicide, and they examine the differences in suicide incidence by age and sex. With the decline in mortality from suicide, the male/female ratio of suicide rates increased from about 2,6 in the early 1970s to around 4.0 in recent years. Suicide rates increase steadily with age, and this pattern did not noticeably change during the period reviewed, The age-specific suicide rates of older men and women declined more than the rates for younger people. As in other societies, married men and women have the lowest suicide rates; in contrast, divorce puts both men and women at the greatest risk of suicide. The authors attempt to investigate the social correlates of suicide by analysing the variation in suicide rates among districts in the Czech Republic and selected socio-economic and demographic characteristics of the district populations. Stepwise regression analysis is used to identify three independent variables that explain 50% of the variation in suicide rates among districts: the abortion ratio, the percentage of locally born population, and the percentage of adults with limited education.
The diet of the wood mouse (Apodemus sylvaticus) was investigated over an annual cycle in three biotopes of Kabylie of Djurdjura, differing in the structure of the vegetation and the anthropic action (oak forest, maquis and cultivated zone). The analysis of 140 stomach contents was restricted to three main components: seeds, vegetative parts of plants and arthropod remains, expressed in dry weight and percentages of occurrence. Five independent variables were considered: habitat, sex, sexual activity, season and age. In the three biotopes wood mouse was primarily granivorous, seeds occurring in 99.3% of the stomachs, for 91.5% of dry weight; seasonal variations were significant, with higher occurrence of seeds in winter and summer. Vegetative items (leaves, stems and flowers) were overall rather frequent (occurrence: 19.3%; dry weight: 4.0%), mainly in winter and spring, in the cultivated zone. Arthropods, mainly insects, were frequently preyed by adults (occurrence: 26.4%; dry weight: 4,4%), particularly in the forest. This diet from Mediterranean habitats is discussed by comparing it with previous data in the same biome and in the northern part of the range.
Little is known about the viability of myxozoan actinospore stages after harvest from laboratory cultures of infected oligochaete worms. The viability and reactivity of actinospores of three myxozoan species was evaluated after short-term storage at 4°C and 12°C. Two methods of determining actinospore viability were compared: differential fluorescent staining and direct microscopic observation of morphological indicators of spore integrity. Spore reactivity was quantified by measuring polar filament discharge rates in a micro-assay with fish mucus substrate and mechanical stimulation by vibration. The age-dependent viability of the three species showed clear differences. Myxobolus cerebralis actinospores had the shortest effective life span whereas Henneguya nuesslini actinospores survived significantly longer. Storage at lower temperatures yielded higher viability in all species. Myxobolus pseudodispar actinospores were significantly robust up to 12°C when assessed by staining, but showed similar viability characteristics as H. nuesslini when analyzed morphologically. Evaluation of spore viability by fluorescent staining correlated with morphological assessment, although fewer viable actinospores were usually detected microscopically. Polar filament discharge activity of morphologically intact actinospores did not significantly decrease until the third day of storage compared to freshly harvested samples. The results indicate that durability and reactivity trends during storage of actinospores differ among myxozoan species.
Damage of molecules as a consequence of oxidative stress has been implicated in the pathogenes is of chronic diseases related to aging. Diet is a key environmental factor affecting the incidence of many chronic diseases. Antioxidant substances in diet enhance the DNA, lipid and protein protection by increasing the scavenging of free radicals. Products of oxidative damage of DNA (DNA strand breaks with oxidized purines or oxidized pyrimidines), lipids (conjugated dienes of fatty acids) and proteins (carbonyls) in relation to nutrition (vegetarian diet vs. non-vegetarian, traditional mixed diet) were measured in young women aged 20-30 years (46 vegetarians, 48 non-vegetarians) vs. older women aged 60-70 years (33 vegetarians, 34 non-vegetarians). In young subjects, no differences in values of oxidative damage as well as plasma values of antioxidative vitamins (C, β-carotene) were observed between vegetarian and non-vegetarian groups. In older vegetarian group significantly reduced values of DNA breaks with oxidized purines, DNA breaks with oxidized pyrimidines and lipid peroxidation and on the other hand, significantly increased plasma values of vitamin C and β-carotene were found compared to the respective non-vegetarian group. Significant age dependences of measured parameters (increase in all oxidative damage products and decrease in plasma vitamin concentrations in older women) were noted only in non-vegetarians. Vegetarian values of older women vs. young women were similar or non-significantly changed. In this paper a comparison is made between the Czech Republic and other European countries regarding attitudes toward the ideal timing for childbirth. In 1990s there was a sharp increase in the postponement of the transition to parenthood in the Czech Republic. This development raises the question: Are normative beliefs in the Czech Republic regarding the timing of childbirth changing, and if so, are they becoming similar to the attitudes present in Western Europe? After a brief outline of the concept of age norms, beliefs regarding the ideal age of when to become a parent in European countries are explored using data from the European Social Survey 2006. In the final part of this paper there is a detailed analysis of Czech attitudes toward the ideal timing of the birth of the first child, using CVVM survey data from 2006, with a specific focus on cohort and educational differences. This research reveals that Czech attitudes toward the ideal age for mothers having a first child is intermediate between the patterns observed in (a) East European countries where the ideal is for a younger age, and (b) West European states where an older age preference is prevalent. In contrast, the ideal age for becoming a father for the first time in the Czech Republic is one of the oldest in Europe. Significantly, the proportion of the population that rejects age norms for reproduction exhibits little systematic pattern across Europe. An ICR outbred suckling mouse model of cryptosporidiosis was used to explain some of the variability associated with experimental Cryptosporidium parvum infections in neonate mice. Fourty four groups of 12 mice each, ranging in age from 4-12 days, each received 1.0 x 104 CsCl purified oocysts per os in 5 pm PBS. At 6 days post-inoculation (PI), mice were killed by C02 overdose and individually weighed. Intestines were then homogenized and oocysts were quantified by hemacytometer. Results revealed that both age and weight have pronounced effects on numbers of oocysts produced in vivo, with larger and older mice producing higher numbers of parasites. Mice 8-9 days of age at the time of inoculation displayed the least amount of weight dependent variability, produced the highest numbers of oocysts, and were judged to be superior over other ages for pharmaceutical screening. Significant reductions in numbers of oocysts occurred in mice inoculated at 10 days of age, and only a few oocysts were found in mice inoculated at 11-12 days of age. These studies suggest that at least some data on Cryptosporidium generated from suckling mouse studies to date are probably unreliable and should be viewed skeptically.
The effect of aging (2-14 months) and total body irradiation (5.7 Gy of gamma radiation) on liver regeneration was investigated in rats 30 h after partial hcpatcctomy. Exposure of rats to irradiation 30 min before partial hepatectomy caused latent injury in the remaining liver cells. During the course of liver regeneration this became manifested as a delay in increasing the nucleic acid concentration and content and liver weight and, furthermore, as inhibition of the increase in the mitotic index and ccllularity and pronounced increase in the frequency of chromosome aberrations in the postmetaphase. The pattern of age-related changes during liver regeneratin was the same as that after irradiation, so that the differences between irradiated and nonirradiated animals became smaller with age.
We examined the reliability of laboratory-derived calibration curves for age determination of field individuals of the common vole, Microtus arvalis. The sex-specific calibration curves for age determination based on the relationship between eye lens mass and age derived in the laboratory were applied to a live-trapped field population of common vole. When comparing the individual’s age to the length of its trapping history, we found a slight tendency for underestimation of real age. These errors were observed slightly more in females than in males and in individuals captured over a longer time. This could mean that growth rates in captive animals, especially older ones, and in females are greater than those from the field. The month of first trapping has no effect on the presence of the error. We suggest that, in population studies with a special concern for ageing individuals over the whole life span, other methods should be examined, such as those measuring insoluble eye lens proteins or calibration curves based on more than one predictor.
