7. Host-parasite dynamics lead to mixed cooperative games

- Subject:
- Prisoner’s dilemma, Mutualism, Cruel Bind, ectoparasites, fleas, and cooperation
- Language:
- English
- Description:
- Although the Prisoner’s dilemma is a leading metaphor for the evolution of sociality, only a few studies demonstrate that this game indeed operates in nature. We offer an alternative perspective, in which parasites and their hosts are used as a model system, suggesting that Prisoner’s dilemma may be rare due to different individuals experiencing variation in the payoffs they receive from alternative strategies. Ectoparasites (such as fleas) move stochastically between hosts, causing differential parasite burdens. The resulting variance in the need for cooperation – in this case cooperative allogrooming – means that payoffs for different strategies (e.g. cooperate and defect) are not fixed. Our simulations revealed that due to parasite dynamics, cooperation among hosts conforms to a mixture of two games: Mutualism and Cruel Bind, both of which are more likely to coerce individuals into mutual cooperation than Prisoner’s dilemma. Though interesting, Prisoner’s dilemma is in fact the least likely scenario. If payoff variation is common, the dominance of the Prisoner’s dilemma paradigm may have made us unnecessarily puzzled by cooperation in nature.

9. Kooperácia, príbuzenstvo a susedstvo v súčasnom rurálnom prostredí na Slovensku

- Subject:
- kinship, relatives, cooperation, reciprocity, reputation, and ethnographic research
- Language:
- Czech
- Description:
- The cooperation and prosociality are among traditional research issues in many scholarly disciplines, whereby they also have received attention in ethnology. In the text I address the complex relationship between forms of cooperation and kinship. My aim is to analyse particular types of cooperation recorded during ethnographic research and to show what mechanisms support its effective functioning. When resolving this research issue I apply the theoretical perspective of evolutionary anthropology, which is a powerful tool to explain how universal characteristics, such as cooperation, manifest themselves in different social and cultural contexts. The treatise is based on empirical data collected during ethnographic research in a rural setting in western Slovakia. Long-term ethnographic research based on the method of ethnographic interviewing and participant observation makes it possible to describe and analyse all the nuances of cooperation in a particular locality. The village in which the research took place is located in the White Carpathians near the border with the Czech Republic, and it features a scattered settlement. The treatise analyses specific mechanisms supporting the functioning and maintenance of cooperation in the locality: kinship, reciprocity (direct and indirect) and reputation. As resulting from the data analysis, the people do not limit cooperation to close or distant relatives. The choice of a cooperation partner depends on many factors, with the degree of kinship being only one of them.

10. Otázky ekologickej racionality a pragmatikä rečovej komunikácie

- Subject:
- pragmatika jazyka, ekologická racionalita, hovorová zdvorilosť, kooperácia, vzájomnosť, irónia, language pragmatics, ecological racionality, common politeness, cooperation, mutuality, and irony
- Language:
- Czech
- Description:
Psychologické prostredie sa vymedzuje vo vzťahu k zamýšľaným a vyjednávaným významom, k ich výmene medzi sociálnymi aktérmi v situačných kontextoch vzájomnosti. Relevantnosť úvah o ekologickej racionalite pre interpretáciu javov hovorovej reči dokumentujú štúdie irónie ako stratégie hovorovej zdvorilosti. and Issues of ecological rationality and pragmatics of language communication Issues of ecological rationality are concerned with psychological criteria of rationality in cognitive processes.. Ecological rationality is a key term suggested for an alternative view of relationship between rationality and the phenomena of psychological reality being investigated (Gigerenzer). The study is focused on sociolinguistic conceptions, which define rationality of common talk due to functions of linguistic means and strategies in fulfilling psychological intentions and goals. The analyzed models of common talk (Grice) and common politeness (Brown & Levinson) represent shifts from an initial emphasis on logical principles of rational communication to current analyses of psychological environment where language communication takes place. Psychological environment is defined in relationship to the meanings intended and negotiated, to their exchange between social actors in situational contexts of mutuality. Relevance of considerations about ecological rationality for interpretation of common talk phenomena is documented by the studies of an irony as a politeness strategy.
