Numerous coccidian stages were found in the kidney tubules of the golden carp (Carassius auratus gibelio). The merogonial and gamogonial stages were localized extracytoplasmally in the microvillous region of the epithelial cells. The host-parasite interface consisted of i) a large area where the parasite was separated from the host cytoplasm by the parasitophorous vacuole membrane only, and ii) a zone of multiple fusions of the host cell membrane investing the parasite to the neighbouring microvilli. The taxonomic status of the extracytoplasmic stages is not clear, however, their possible appurtenance to Eimeria scardimi, which was frequently found in the kidneys of golden carps in the same population, is discussed.

The sequences of 10 conservative regions (CR) of minicircles of 6 selected isolates of freshwater fish try-panosomes have typical organization of this region with high degree of sequence conservation. The comparison with CRs of other trypanosomatids showed that freshwater fish trypanosomes represent a compact separate group within the genus Trypanosoma. The alignment of all sequences obtained revealed, however, the existence of 2 types of CRs in sequenced minicirclcs, with the differences concentrated in a short region. Taxonomic consequences of these results arc discussed.

3. Cenotes (sinkholes) of the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, as a habitat of adult trematodes of fish

Examination of a total of 581 fish specimens of 15 species from 39 cenotes (sinkholes) in the Yucatan Peninsula, southeastern Mexico, revealed the presence of 10 species of adult trematodes. These were as follows: Saccocoelioides sogandaresi Lumsden, 1963, Saccocoelinides sp. (family Haploporidae), Cichlasotrema ujati Pineda et Andrade, 1989 (Angiodictyidae), Crassicutis cichlasomae Manter, 1936 (Homalometridae), Magnivitellinum simplex Kloss, 1966 (Macroderoididae), Stunkardiel-la minima (Stunkard, 1938) (Acanthostomidae), Oligogonotylus manieri Watson, 1976 (Cryptogonimidae), Genarchella tropica (Manter, 1936), G. astyanactis (Watson, 1976), and G. isabellae (Lamothe-Argumedo, 1977) (Derogenidae). Saccocoelioides sogandaresi is reported from Mexico for the first time. Poecilia velifera and P. latipunctata for S. sogandaresi, Cichlasoma octo-fasciatum for C. cichlasomae, Cichlasoma friedrichslahli and C. meeki for O. manieri, and C. meeki, C. octofasciatum and Go-hiomorus dormitor for C. isabellae represent new host records. 4. Cestoda and Acanthocephala of fishes from cenotes (= sinkholes) of Yucatan, Mexico

During a study on parasites of fish from cenotes (= sinkholes) in the Yucatan Peninsula, the following cestodes and acanthocephalans were found in 581 freshwater fish of 15 species: the cestodes Bothriocephalus acheilognathi Yamaguti, 1934, Bothriocephalus sp. (Bothriocephalidae), Nomimascolex sp. (Monticellidae), Proteocephalidea gen. sp. larv., Dendrouterina pa-pillifera (Fuhrmann, 1908) larv. and D. pilherodiae Mahon, 1956 larv. (Dilepididae), and the acanthocephalans Octospinifer-oides chandleri Bullock, 1957, Neoechinorhynchus golvani Salgado-Maldonado, 1978 (Neoechinorhynchidae), Polymorphus (syn. Arhythmorhynchus) brevis (Van Cleave, 1916) larv. (Polymorphidae), and an echinorhynchid larva. With the exception of B. acheilognathi, all tapeworms are found in Mexico for the first time; second-stage larvae of D. papillifera and D. pilherodiae from fish are reported for the first time.

5. Development of Procamallanus saccobranchi (Nematoda: Camallanidae), a parasite of a freshwater fish in India

The development of the nematode Procamallanus saccobranchi Karve, 1952, a parasite in the stomach of the fish Heteropneustes fossilis (Bloch), was studied in Mesocyclops crassus (Fischer) and Mesocyclops leuckarti (Claus). After being ingested by the copepods the nematode first-stage larvae penetrated into the haemocoel of the intermediate host; there they moulted twice (on days 3 and 5 p.i. at 28-30°C) attaining the third, infective stage. The definitive host H. fossilis acquired infection by feeding on copepods harbouring infcclivc-stage larvae; in the stomach of this definitive host, the larvae were observed to undergo two more moults. The third moult occurred on day 13 p.i. and the fourth moult on day 38 p.i. and day 66 p.i. in “male” and “female” larvae, respectively. The larval stages, including the moulting forms are described and illustrated.

6. Huffmanela paronai sp. n. (Nematoda: Trichosomoididae), a new parasite from the skin of swordfish Xiphias gladius in the Ligurian Sea (Western Mediterranean)

Description:
A new species of trichosomoidid nematode, Huffmanela paronai sp. n., is established on the basis of its egg morphology and biological characters. The dark-shcllcd, cmbryonatcd eggs of this histozoic parasite occur in masses in the epidermis of the swordfish Xiphias gladius L. (Xiphiidae, Perciformes) from the Ligurian Sea in northern Italy. The eggs are concentrated in groups appearing as black spots in the skin of the fish host, being distributed mainly on the lower part of its body (lower jaw, gill covers, pectoral, anal and caudal fins, lower half of body). The parasite’s eggs are characterised mainly by their shape and markedly small size (48-51 x 21-24 pm), an aspinose surface, relatively small polar plugs, and thick egg wall (3 pm). This is the first Huffmanela species reported from fish in Europe.

7. Philometroides caudata sp. n. (Nematoda: Philometridae) from Rhamdia guatemalensis (Pisces) in Yucatan, Mexico

A new nematode species, Philometroides caudata sp.n., is described from the swimbladder (under the serosa cover) of the freshwater pimelodid catfish, Rhamdia guatemalensis, from cenotes (— sinkholes) in Yucatan, southeastern Mexico. It differs from all hitherto known members of the genus, except P. maplestoni (Travassos, Artigas et Pereira, 1928), in having the functional anus, the conical tail with a terminal knob-like structure and the oesophagus without an anterior inflation in female, and in the structure of the caudal end in male. It can be distinguished from P. maplestoni (described only from females) by the extent of embossed cuticle, the size of body and the host type. P. caudata, representing a Neotropical element, is the first Philometroides species reported from freshwater fishes in Mexico.

8. Some nematodes of freshwater fishes in Venezuela

The present paper comprises a systematic survey of nematodes found in 88 specimens of 24 species of freshwater fishes in Venezuela in 1992 and 1994. The following 13 species of nematodes were recorded: Adults: Guyanema longispiculum Moravec, Prouza et Royero, 1996, Guyunema sp., Procamallanus (Spiracamallanus) inupinatus Travassos, Artigas et Pereira, 1928, P. (S.) krameri (Petter, 1974) comb, n., P. (S.) pintoi (Kohn et Fernandes, 1988) comb, n., Procamallanus (Spiracamallanus) sp., Ruphidascaris (Sprentascaris) mahnerti (Petter et Cassone, 1984). Larvae: Anisakidae gen. sp., Brevimullicaecum sp., Ctmtracaecum sp. Type 1, Contracaecum sp. Type 2, Contracaecum sp. Type 3, Eustrongylides sp. All these parasites are reported from Venezuela for the first time and all findings represent new host records. Brevimulticae-cum larvae are reported from fishes for the first time. Almost all parasites are briefly described and illustrated and problems concerning their morphology, taxonomy, hosts and geographical distribution are discussed. A new name, Terranova diazungriai nom. nov. is proposed for T. caballeroi Diaz-Ungrfa, 1968 (a junior homonym of T. caballeroi Baruš et Coy Otero, 1966).

9. Some new data on the intermediate and paratenic hosts of the nematode Anguillicola crassus Kuwahara, Niimi et Itagaki, 1974 (Dracunculoidea), a swimbladder parasite of eels

Three species of planktonie crustaceans, Cyclops strenuus and Macrocyclops alhidus (Copcpoda) and Notodromas monacha (Ostracoda), were experimentally infected with the eggs and second-stage larvae of the swimbladder nematode Anguillicola crassus originating from eels from Neusiedler Lake in Austria. At 20-22°C, third-stage larvae of the parasite developed in all these invertebrate hosts within 16-20 days p.i. Ostracods harbouring the nematode third-stage larvae (33 days p.i.) were fed to small eels (Anguilla anguilla), while infected copepods (20 days p.i.) to seven other fish species. By these experiments, the larvae from ostracods proved to be infective for the definitive host and the ostracod was thus confirmed as a true intermediate host of Anguillicola crassus. Notodromas monacha represents a new experimental intermediate host of A. crassus and the second known invertebrate other than a copepod in which the larval development of this nematode up to the infective stage takes place. Five species of fish, cyprinids Tinca tinea, Alhumus alburnus, Gobio gobio and Albumoides bipunctatus (the latter representing a new host record), and guppy, Poecilia reticulata, were found to serve as experimental paratenic hosts for A. crassus, in which the live nematode infective larvae were recorded 49 days p.i.
