When parasites invade paired structures of their host non-randomly, the resulting asymmetry may have both pathological and ecological significance. To facilitate the detection and visualisation of asymmetric infections we have developed a free software tool, Analysis of Symmetry of Parasitic Infections (ASPI). This tool has been implemented as an R package (https://cran.r-project.org/package=aspi) and a web application (https://wayland.shinyapps.io/aspi). ASPI can detect both consistent bias towards one side, and inconsistent bias in which the left side is favoured in some hosts and the right in others. Application of ASPI is demonstrated using previously unpublished data on the distribution of metacercariae of species of Diplostomum von Nordmann, 1832 in the eyes of ruffe Gymnocephalus cernua (Linnaeus). Invasion of the lenses appeared to be random, with the proportion of metacercariae in the left and right lenses showing the pattern expected by chance. Monozoic cestodes of the recently amended genus Promonobothrium Mackiewicz, 1968 (Cestoda: Caryophyllidea), parasites of suckers (Cypriniformes: Catostomidae) in North America, are reviewed, with information on their host specificity, distribution and data on the scolex morphology of seven species studied for the first time using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Evaluation of type and voucher specimens from museum collections and newly collected material of most species indicated the following valid nominal species: Promonobothrium minytremi Mackiewicz, 1968 (type species); P. ingens (Hunter, 1927); P. hunteri (Mackiewicz, 1963); P. ulmeri (Calentine et Mackiewicz, 1966); P. fossae (Williams, 1974) and P. mackiewiczi (Williams, 1974). Rogersus Williams, 1980 with its only species R. rogersi is transferred to Promonobothrium based on morphological and molecular data. Promonobothrium currani sp. n. and P. papiliovarium sp. n. are described from Ictiobus bubalus (Rafinesque) and Ictiobus niger (Rafinesque), and Erimyzon oblongus (Mitchill), respectively. The newly described species can be distinguished from the other congeners by the morphology of the scolex, the position of the anteriormost vitelline follicles and testes, the presence of postovarian vitelline follicles and the shape of the ovary. Molecular phylogenetic analyses of six species based on sequences of the small and large subunits of the nuclear ribosomal RNA genes (ssrDNA, lsrDNA) confirmed the monophyletic status of the genus and supported the validity of the species analysed. An analysis of the bones from the settlement in Brozany nad Ohří (Litoměřice district) dated to the Salzmünde phase of the Funnel Beaker culture revealed standard characteristics for the reconstruction of the paleoeconomic situation and provided information regarding several unusual and interesting finds. There is a distinct predominance of domestic animals over wild species, with cattle being the most prominent domestic species. A total of sixteen species of wild animals were identified. Interesting finds include pig skulls, a complete skeleton of a fox, bones from perhaps synanthropic field mice, a fragment of an eagle bone, a vertebra from a large salmonid fish, scales from asp and chub and an assemblage of eight probably intentionally perforated shells. The skeletal remains of eight puppies were found in two settlement features, and skeletal remains of three newborn humans were also found in two settlement features. The co-occurrence of puppies and newborns in the same context indicates their equal depositional status. The material also contains a number of bone artefacts. and Rozbor kostí pocházejících ze sídliště v Brozanech nad Ohří (okr. Litoměřice), datovaného do salzmündské fáze kultury nálevkovitých pohárů, přinesl jak standardní charakteristiku paleoekonomické situace, tak i informace o několika neobvyklých a zajímavých nálezech. V materiálu výrazně převládají domácí zvířata nad divokými a mezi domácími zvířaty dominuje tur. Divokých živočichů bylo detekováno celkem 16 druhů. Zajímavými nálezy jsou kompletní lebky prasat, skelet lišky, kosti snad synantropních myšic, fragment kosti orla, obratel velké lososovité ryby a kumulace šupin bolena a jelce a soubor osmi perforovaných lastur velevrubů. Ve dvou sídlištních objektech byly nalezeny pozůstatky celkem osmi štěňat a ve dvou sídlištních objektech byla nalezena torza kostřiček tří lidských novorozenců. Unikátní je spolu-výskyt štěňat a novorozenců v témže kontextu naznačující jejich rovnocennost při deponování. Materiál obsahuje i soubor kostěných artefaktů.
Halančíci rodu Nothobranchius jsou přizpůsobeni životu v periodických vodních tůních v afrických savanách. Období sucha přežívají v embryonální fázi vývoje. V současné době se rozeznává přes 60 druhů halančíků rodu Nothobranchius, kteří žijí v travnatých savanách a řídkém sezonním lese v širokém pásu východní Afriky. Druh N. furzeri se stal modelovým organismem pro výzkum stárnutí a věnují se mu v několika laboratořích v Evropě, USA a Asii. Náš výzkum se zaměřuje hlavně na evoluční ekologii tří druhových komplexů tohoto rodu v oblasti jižního a středního Mosambiku., Killifish from the genus Nothobranchius are adapted to temporal pools in African savannahs. They survive the dry phase as dormant eggs and develop rapidly after the onset of rainy season. There are about 60 species of Nothobranchius distributed throughout Eastern Africa.
