Inter-comparisons in the gas exchange patterns and root characteristics under both well-watered and drought conditions were done in three-years-old seedlings of three oak species (Quercus cerris L., Q. frainetto Ten., and Q. ilex L.) growing in controlled environment. Well-watered Q. cerris had greater physiological performances than other oaks, but under drought it was not able to face the water stress showing also structural modifications such as reduction of root length and average diameter. On the other hand, Q. ilex maintained root growth both in drought or well-watered soils. Moreover, it was able to keep open stomata also under water stress, although stomatal conductance (gs) was low. Q. frainetto had an intermediate position in regard to its physiological and root structural characteristics between Q. cerris and Q. ilex under drought stress. For all oaks the relationship between gs and the ratio of sub-stomatal and ambient CO2 concentration (Ci/Ca) highlighted the dynamic adaptation of gs to the increase of hydraulic resistances of leaf, stem, and roots portions, more evident during the air humidity change and progressive soil dehydration. This suggests a well-triggered above-and under-ground mechanism to endure the drought stress. and F. Manes ... [et al.].
After saturating irradiation for 3 h (SI), the original fluorescence F0 increased while the photosystem 2 (PS2) photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm) declined significantly. These parameters could largely recover to the levels of dark-adapted leaves after 3 h of subsequent dark recovery. No net loss of the D1 proteins occurred after SI. Soybean and pumpkin leaves had different responses to SI. Low temperature fluorescence parameters, F685 and F685/F735, decreased significantly in soybean leaves but not in pumpkin leaves. Part of the light-harvesting complex LHC2 dissociated from PS2 complexes in soybean leaves but not in pumpkin leaves, as shown by sucrose density gradient centrifugation and SDS-PAGE. The photon-saturated PS2 electron transport activity declined significantly in pumpkin thylakoids but not in soybean thylakoids. In addition, a large amount of phosphorylated D1 proteins was found in dark-adapted soybean leaves but not in dark-adapted pumpkin leaves. Hence at excessive irradiance soybean and pumpkin have the same protective strategy against photo-damage, reversible down-regulation of PS2, but two different mechanisms, namely the reversible down-regulation is related to the dissociation of LHC2 in soybean leaves but not in pumpkin leaves. and Hai-Bo Zhang, Da-Quan Xu.
In addition to other factors, high altitude (HA) environment is characterized by high photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD). Photosynthetic characteristics of wild and cultivated plants were studied at different irradiances at Losar, India (altitude 4 200 m). Wild plants were tolerant to high PPFDs. Slopes of curve between net photosynthetic rate (PN) and intercellular CO2 concentration
(Ci) or stomatal conductance (gs) increased with increase in irradiance suggesting insensitivity or tolerance of these plants to higher PPFD. Cultivated plants, however, were sensitive to higher PPFD, their slopes of curves between PN and Ci or gs decreased with increased PPFD. Tolerance or insensitivity to higher PPFD was an important parameter affecting plant performance at HA. and N. Kumar, S. Kumar, P. S. Ahuja.
Diurnal and seasonal trends in net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (g), transpiration rate (E), vapour pressure deficit, temperature, photosynthetic photon flux density, and water use efficiency (WUE) were compared in a two-year-old Dalbergia sissoo and Hardwickia binata plantation. Mean daily maximum PN in D. sissoo ranged from 21.40±2.60 µmol m-2 s-1 in rainy season I to 13.21±2.64 µmol m-2 s-1 in summer whereas in H. binata it was 20.04±1.20 µmol m-2 s-1 in summer and 13.64±0.16 µmol m-2 s-1 in winter. There was a linear relationship between daily maximum PN and gs in D. sissoo but there was no strong linear relationship between PN and gs in H. binata. In D. sissoo, the reduction in gs led to a reduction in both PN and E enabling the maintenance of WUE during dry season thereby managing unfavourable environmental conditions efficiently whereas in H. binata, an increase in gs causes an increase of PN and E with a significant moderate WUE. and S. The effects of salinity (sea water at 0 ‰ versus 30 ‰) on gross rates of O2 evolution (JO2) and net rates of CO2 uptake (PN) were measured in the halotolerant estuarine C4 grasses Spartina patens, S. alterniflora, S. densiflora, and Distichlis spicata in controlled growth environments. Under high irradiance, salinity had no significant effect on the intercellular to ambient CO2 concentration ratio (Ci/Ca). However, during photosynthesis under limiting irradiance, the maximum quantum efficiency of CO2 fixation decreased under salinity across species, suggesting there is increased leakage of the CO2 delivered to the bundle sheath cells by the C4 pump. Growth under salinity did not affect the maximum intrinsic efficiency of photosystem 2, PS2 (FV/FM) in these species, suggesting salinity had no effect on photosynthesis by inactivation of PS2 reaction centers. Under saline conditions and high irradiance, PN was reduced by 75 % in Spartina patens and S. alterniflora, whereas salinity had no effect on PN in S. densiflora or D. spicata. This inhibition of PN in S. patens and S. alterniflora was not due to an effect on stomatal conductance since the ratio of
Ci/Ca did not decrease under saline conditions. In growth with and without salt, PN was saturated at -500 µmol(quantum) m-2 s-1 while JO2 continued to increase up to full sunlight, indicating that carbon assimilation was not tightly coupled to photochemistry in these halophytic species. This increase in alternative electron flow under high irradiance might be an inherent function in these halophytes for dissipating excess energy. and B. R. Maricle ... [et al.].
The foliar stable carbon isotope compositions (δ13C) of nine dominant species in seven sites, Yangling, Yongshou, Tongchuan, Fuxian, Ansai, Mizhi, and Shenmu, standing from the south to the north in the Loess Plateau of China were studied. The results showed that foliar δ13C values ranged from -22.61 to -30.73 ‰ with an average of -27.23 ‰ in 141 C3 plant samples collected from the Loess Plateau. Foliar δ13C values varied significantly (p<0.001) among the nine C3 species, which were Pinus tabulaeformis Carr., Robinia pseudoacacia L., Zizyphus jujuba Mill. var. spinosus Hu., Rubus parvifolius L., Hippophae rhamnoides L., Caragana korshinskii Kom., Lespedeza davurica (Laxm.) Schindl., Artemisia sacrorum Ledeb. var. incana Mattf., and Agropyron cristatum Gaertn. Comparatively, R. pseudoacacia, H. rhamnoides, and C. korshinskii had much higher δ13C values than the other six species, while A. sacrorum had the lowest δ13C value. There was no significant difference in foliar δ13C value among five species, P. tabulaeformis, Z. jujuba, R. parvifolius, L. davurica, and A. cristatum. Considering the life forms categorized from nine C3 species, trees and shrubs had significantly higher δ13C values than herbs (p<0.001). The deciduous tree R. pseudoacacia had much higher δ13C value than the evergreen tree P. tabulaeformis (p<0.01). Among the four shrubs, foliar δ13C values in H. rhamnoides and C. korshinskii were markedly higher (p<0.01) than those in Z. jujuba and R. parvifolius. Among the three herbs, L. davurica and A. cristatum had significantly higher δ13C values than A. sacrorum (p<0.01). Leguminous species such as R. pseudoacacia, C. korshinskii, and L. davurica as well as a non-leguminous species with nitrogen-fixation capacity, H. rhamnoides, had higher δ13C values than other non-leguminous species with same life-form. The mean δ13C value increased by about 7 % from Yangling in the south to Shenmu in the north as climatic drought increased, and foliar δ13C values differed much (p<0.001) among the seven sites. For nine species in the Loess Plateau, foliar δ13C values were significantly and negatively (p<0.001) correlated with the mean annual precipitation, moreover, an increase of 100 mm in annual precipitation would result in a decrease of 1.2 ‰ in δ13C value. and S.-X. Leaf stomatal density (SD), net photosynthetic rates (PN), and stomatal conductance (gs) of Hordeum vulgare and Pisum sativum cultivars in Himalaya increased with altitude. Higher PN and leaf temperature under low CO2 partial pressure at high altitudes could evoke a higher gs and SD to allow sufficient influx of CO2 as well as more efficient leaf cooling through transpiration. and S. We investigated the role of cyclic electron flow around photosystem 1 (CEF1) and state transition (ST) in two soybean cultivars that differed in salt tolerance. The CEF1 and maximum photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm) were determined under control and NaCl (50 mM) stress and the NaCl-induced light-harvesting complex 2 (LHC2) phosphorylation in vitro was analysed in light and dark. NaCl induced the increase of CEF1 more greatly in wild soybean Glycine cyrtoloba (cv. ACC547) than in cultivated soybean Glycine max (cv. Melrose). The Fv/Fm was reduced less in G. cyrtoloba than in G. max after 10-d NaCl stress. In G. cyrtoloba, the increase of CEF1 was associated with enhancement of LHC2 phosphorylation in thylakoid membrane under both dark and light. However, in G. max the NaCl treatment decreased the LHC2 phosphorylation. Treatment with photosynthetic electron flow inhibitors (DCMU, DBMIB) inhibited LHC2 phosphorylation more in G. max than in G. cyrtoloba. Thus the NaCl-induced up-regulation in CEF1 and ST might contribute to salt resistance of G. cyrtoloba. and K. X. Lu ... [et al.].
In six dominant species of the Amazonian 'Bana' vegetation, leaf blade characteristics, pigment composition, and chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence parameters were measured in young and mature leaves under field conditions. Leaf δ13C was comparable in the six species, which suggested that both expanding and expanded leaves contained organic matter fixed under similar intercellular and ambient CO2 concentration (Ci/Ca). High leaf C/N and negative δ15N values found in this habitat were consistent with the extreme soil N-deficiency. Analysis of Chl and carotenoids showed that expanding leaves had an incomplete development of photosynthetic antenna when compared to adult leaves. Dynamic inactivation of photosystem 2 (PS2) at midday was observed at both leaf ages as Fv/Fm decreased compared to predawn values. Adult leaves reached overnight Fv/Fm ratios typical of healthy leaves. Overnight recovery of Fv/Fm in expanding leaves was incomplete. F0 remained unchanged from midday to predawn and Fv tended to increase from midday to predawn. The recovery from midday depression observed in adult leaves suggested an acclimatory down-regulation associated with photo-protection and non-damage of PS2.
Patterns of fluorescence and colony tissue, colour were studied (field observations and epifluorescence microscopy) in six species of the coral genus Madracis over depth from 10 to 60 m at a reef slope in Curaçao. Two functions showed up: (1) Decrease in number of colourmorphs (n = 25) with depth suggests a photo-protective function where short wavelengths (e.g. UV) are transformed to long wavelengths, (2) Green fluorescence, observed in four species over their entire depth range, transforms radiation to wavelengths useful for photosynthesis. The observed patterns in fluorescence between species did not correspond to the current taxonomic classification. Our results do not support the usefulness of fluorescence as a taxonomic tool in corals. and M. J. A. Vermeij ... [et al.].
