Grain sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench. cvs. TX430 and KS82] was grown in a Haynie very fine sandy loam (coarse-silty, mixed, superactive, calcareous, mesic Mollic Udifluvents) under constant 47 % shade or full irradiance in a greenhouse under two watering regimes to see the combined and individual effects of low irradiance (LI) and low water (LW) on the sorghum genotypes. Under the high-irradiance (HI) and high-water (HW) treatment (control) and the LI-HW treatment, TX430 grew taller than KS82. Both LI and LW reduced several times the fresh and dry masses. Under the control conditions, TX430 reached its maximum net photosynthetic rate (PNmax) of 28.93 μmol m-2 s-1 at a photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) of 1 707 μmol m-2 s-1, and KS82 reached its PNmax of 28.32 μmol m-2 s-1 at a PPFD of 2 973 μmol m-2 s-1. The fact that TX430 had PNmax under a lower PPFD than KS82 may relate to its taller growth under LI conditions. Application of the electrostatic precipitator (ESP) dust to soil and leaves of Cajanus cajan, Vigna mungo, Vigna radiata, Vigna catjung and Glycina max increased biomass, chloroplast pigments, Chemical constituents and enzyme activities of leaves, besides crop productivity evidently indicating that the dust acted as a fertilizer. The net photosynthetic rate, photosystem 2 activity and rate of transpiration were not altered in špite of the dust forming a thin uniform coating ověř the leaf surface. The contents of intermediary N-compounds like allantoin, allantoic acid and total ureides of the leaves, which might serve as an indirect evidence of symbiotic N2-fixation, were higher in the treated plants. There were increments in free proline, soluble proteins, total nitrogen, nitrates, nitrites, soluble sugars and phenols in the treated plants. The concentrations of ffee amino acids, soluble starch, total sucrose and water soluble SH compounds of the leaves of the control and treated plants did not show any significant difference. The activity of superoxide dismutase was significantly higher which possibly indicated its role in alleviation of H2O2 and Oj toxicity. Enzymes like nitráte reductase, nitrite reductase, glutamine S3mthetase, acid and alkaline phosphatases, carbonic anhydrase, catalase, glutathione reductase and ascorbate peroxidase also functioned normally. In the treated plants, the concentration of ascorbic acid was significantly higher in the roots and nodules indicating the possible role of ascorbic acid in stress alleviation.
We compared chloroplast photochemical properties and activities of some chloroplast-localised enzymes in two ecotypes of Phragmites communis, swamp reed (SR, C3-like) and dune reed (DR, C4-like) plants growing in the desert region of north-west China. Electron transport rates of whole electron transport chain and photosystem (PS) 2 were remarkably lower in DR chloroplasts. However, the electron transport rate for PS1 in DR chloroplasts was more than 90 % of the activity similar in the SR chloroplasts. Activities of Mg2+-ATPase and cyclic and non-cyclic photophosphorylations were higher in DR chloroplasts than in the SR ones. The activities of chloroplast superoxide dismutase (SOD) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX), both localised at or near the PS1 complex and serving to scavenge active oxygen around PS1, and the content of ascorbic acid, a special substrate of APX in chloroplast, were all higher in DR chloroplasts. Hence reed, a hydrophytic plant, when subjected to intense selection pressure in dune habitat, elevates its cyclic electron flow around PS1. In consequence, it provides extra ATP required by C4 photosynthesis. Combined high activities of active oxygen scavenging components in DR chloroplasts might improve protection of photosynthetic apparatus, especially PS1, from the damage of reactive oxygen species. This offers new explanation of photosynthetic performance of plant adaptation to long-term natural drought habitat, which is different from those, subjected to the short-term stress treatment or even to the artificial field drought. and X.
