Autoři zkoumají proměny v pojímání, organizování, trávení a formách volného času v době od nastolení monopolní vlády komunistického strany do druhé poloviny padesátých let, kdy se tato sféra začala výrazněji měnit pod vlivem konzumních trendů. Své téma pojednávají v souvislosti s vládnoucí ideologií i se změnami hospodářské, sociální a kulturní politiky. Reflektují genderové rozdíly, kontrasty mezi městem a venkovem, specifika určitých sociálních skupin a zvláštní pozornost věnují volnému času mládeže a dětí. V souladu s podřízením individua celospolečenským zájmům dostaly jednoznačnou přednost kolektivní formy odpočinku a organizovaného využívání volného času (závodní rekreace, masové návštěvy uměleckých představení, muzeí a galerií, později pionýrské tábory), zatímco tradiční spolková činnost a privátní trávení volného času byly chápány jako „buržoazní přežitek“. Těmto přístupům odpovídaly i nové jednotné organizační struktury, jež nahrazovaly dřívější spolky a zajišťovaly žádoucí volnočasovou náplň (Revoluční odborové hnutí, Československý svaz mládeže, Svaz pro spolupráci s armádou a podobně). Mírný ústup od ideologizovaného pojetí volného času přišel s takzvaným novým kurzem v roce 1953, výraznější změny nastaly ve druhé polovině padesátých let, kdy autoři v souvislosti se zkracováním pracovní doby, zvyšováním životní úrovně a pronikáním konzumních trendů hovoří o programovém rozšiřování volného času a jeho postupné individualizaci., The authors consider the changes in the conception, organization, ways of spending, and forms of leisure in the Bohemian Lands from the establishment of the Communist monopoly on power in early 1948 to the second half of the 1950s. (After this point leisure began here began strikingly to change under the influence of consumerist trends.) They consider the topic in the context of the dominant ideology and changes in economic, social, and arts policies. The authors take into account gender differences, contrasts between town and country, and special features of social groups. They pay particular attention to leisure amongst young people and children. The authors do not, however, see the Communist takeover of February 1948 as a watershed in the sphere of leisure. Instead, they demonstrate both the continuity and differences between the period of limited democracy, from May 1945 to February 1948, and the years that followed. In some cases, they highlight features that were identical in Nazi German and Communist approaches to leisure activities (the rejection of jazz, ‘trash’ (brak) in the arts, and Western influences in general). The authors discuss how the Communist régime intervened intensively in the way people chose to spend their free time, in its endeavour to shape a new type of man and woman in the new social conditions. At the same time, particularly in the late 1940s and early 1950s, the State so emphasized the importance of the work of building socialism, that leisure was seen as a ‘necessary evil’, since it used up valuable physical and mental energy that would have been better spent on increasing productivity. For the same aims, but also with regard to the idea of somewhat democratizing the arts, the regime gave preference to activities such as political and vocational self-education as well as the study of selected arts and cultural values. In keeping with the subordination of the individual to the interests of society, collective forms of recreation and the leisure (holidays spent with groups of co-workers, mass group visits to plays, films, concerts, museums, galleries, and, later, Pioneer camps) were given priority. Traditional club activity and individual leisure were seen as ‘bourgeois survivals’. Some young people’s non-conformist leisure activities met with suspicion from the authorities or with outright repression. Amongst the models of leisure that the régime held worthy of emulation were the Socialist youth building enterprises (stavby mládeže), ‘volunteer’ work, and additional instruction or training. The new organizations, such as, and the Revolutionary Trade-union Movement (Revoluční odborové hnutí – ROH), the Czechoslovak Youth Organization (Československý svaz mládeže – ČSM), and the Association for Work with the Army (Svaz pro spolupráci s armádou – Svazarm), which took the place of the earlier clubs and associations, comported with the new ideology and provided the required forms of leisure. The authorities endeavoured also to support considerably developed and differentiated hobbies, such as making art, playing board games, and collecting. Special facilities were established to run these activities, including the enterprise-based clubs of the ROH, arts centres (kulturní domy), and popular-education organizations (osvětové besedy). Forms of universally accessible activity, like chess and phillumeny (collecting matchbox labels), were supported, whereas as financially more demanding hobbies or those linked to private gain, such as philately or numismatics, were marginalized. A slight retreat from the ideologized conception of leisure came with the so-called ‘new course’ of 1953. But more striking changes were made in the second half of the 1950s. These years, which saw shorter working weeks, a higher standard of living than before, and the emergence of consumerist trends, are described by the authors as a period of the planned expansion of leisure and its gradual individualization.
Na příkladu jedné „ilegální“ skupiny vytvořené na obchodní akademii v Plzni studie konkrétně ukazuje, jakým způsobem se někdejší příznivci Svazu české mládeže přetvářeli v nástroje poúnorové „očisty“ škol a dřívější odpůrci svazu naopak v protagonisty studentských „odbojových“ organizací i jaká naivita, dilemata a rizika provázely občas toto tříbení. and At three levels (state-wide, regional, and the class of one school) this article examines how political disputes in post-Second World War Czechoslovakia entered the lives of secondary-school students. According to the author, a substantial number of publicly active secondary-school students in 1946–48 refused to be part of the united Czech Youth Organization (Svaz české mládeže), which worked closely with the Czechoslovak Communist Party (CPCz), and sought instead to establish a separate Organization of Secondary-school Students (Svaz středoškolského studentstva). Despite clear support from the Czechoslovak National Social Party and the Czechoslovak Populist Party, the attempts to legalize the new association of secondary-school students before the Communist takeover in late February 1948 were unsuccessful. In the region of west Bohemia, moreover, the attempts at emancipation of secondary-school organizations were intensified by students’ sympathies for west European and American culture and by their widespread respect for the US Army, which had liberated west Bohemia towards the end of the Second World War. In Pilsen therefore an independent Regional Secondary-school Council (Krajská středoškolská rada) had emerged already in late 1945 and early 1946. It eventually began to publish its own pro-Western periodical, Studentský hlasatel (The Students’ Herald), which was distributed to other regions as well. After the Communist takeover, Pilsen secondary-school students clamoured for several protest demonstrations and tended to favour the establishment of ‘resistance’ organizations right at their schools. Using the example of one ‘underground’ group formed at a Pilsen business academy, the article demonstrates the way in which erstwhile adherents of the Czech Youth Organization became an instrument for the post-takeover ‘purges’ of schools, and shows how former opponents of the organization, by contrast, became joined student ‘resistance’ organizations and also how naivety, dilemmas, and risks sometimes accompanied this crystallization.
Podle recenzentky kniha přináší spoustu poznatků o organizování pomoci uprchlíkům před nacismem v předválečném Československu, přibližuje fungování a atmosféru uprchlických táborů a působivě seznamuje s řadou konkrétních lidských osudů. This work, according to the reviewer, provides a great deal of information about the organizing of aid to refugees of Nazism in pre-war Czechoslovakia. It also describes the operation and atmosphere of the refugee camps and movingly acquaints the reader with a number of actual life stories. It fails, however, to provide a unified interpretation, general conclusions, or a comparative picture. Importantly, it debunks the myth that the First Republic of Czechoslovakia was a haven for refugees. With its uncompromising criticism of the restrictions implemented by the Czechoslovak state, however, the work unconsciously creates a contrary myth, and would undoubtedly have been more balanced had it also attempted to compare Czechoslovak policy with that in other European countries in the 1930s.
Besides many dispersed fragments related to theory of sleep, dreams and their interpretation, Babylonian Talmud contains a long passage dealing with those issues, which includes also several series of dream-interpretations. The passage is often referred to as „Rabbinic dream-book” in specialized scholarly literature. The present article analyses contain and compositional patterns of the text and indicates the presence of mutually exclusive theories of dreams and their interpretation, as well as typically Talmudic methods of organization such as association and agglutination. Since the final composition does not communicate any uniform statement, we claim it incorrect to call the text „Rabbinic dream-book” and suggest it is not more than a mere agglutination of pre-existing textual fragments.
Kniha francouzské autorky pojednává o osudech francouzských archivů, které nejprve za druhé světové války zabavily a do různých míst ve střední Evropě evakuovaly německé úřady, posléze je převzaly a do své země odvezly úřady sovětské, přičemž mnohé tyto dokumenty dosud zůstávají v Rusku. Autorka zdánlivě nezáživné téma podává jako strhující příběh, zasazuje je do historického rámce využívání archivů jako válečné trofeje a vnáší do aktuálních diskusí o historické paměti nový důležitý rozměr. and This volume, by a French historian, considers the fate of the French archives that were first confiscated during the Second World War and carted off to various places in central Europe by the German authorities, before eventually being taken by the Soviet authorities and brought to the USSR. Many of the records have remained in Russia to this day. The author presents this potentially lacklustre subject as an exciting story. She puts it into the historical framework of archives as war booty, and adds a new, important dimension to current debates about historical memory.
Článek je zkrácenou verzí studie, kterou autor publikoval pod názvem „‘No Action’: Die USA und die Invasion in die Tschechoslowakei“ ve sborníku: Karner, Stefan – Tomilina, Natalja – Tschubarjan, Alexander – Bischof, Günter – Iščenko, Viktor – Prozumenščikov, Michail – Ruggenthaler, Peter – Tůma, Oldřich – Wilke, Manfred (ed.): Prager Frühling: Das internationale Krisenjahr 1968, sv. 1: Beiträge. Köln/R. – Weimar – Wien, Böhlau 2008, s. 319-354. Autor rekonstruuje postoj americké vlády k intervenci vojsk Vašavské smlouvy do Československa v srpnu 1968. This article is an abridged version, in Czech translation, of the article ‘“No Action”: Die USA und die Invasion in die Tschechoslowakei’, from the volume of essays by Stefan Karner, Natalja Tomilina, Alexander Tschubarjan, Günter Bischof, Viktor Iščenko, Michail Prozumenščikov, Peter Ruggenthaler, Oldřich Tůma, and Manfred Wilke, Prager Frühling: Das internationale Krisenjahr 1968, vol. 1, Cologne, Weimar, and Vienna: Böhlau, 2008, pp. 319–54. In the article the author reconstructs the US Administration’s response to the Warsaw Pact military intervention in Czechoslovakia in August 1968. He points out that in May of that year Deputy Secretary of State Eugene V. Rostow, referring to the Communist takeover in Czechoslovakia and the Soviet intervention in Hungary in 1956, recommended to his superior, Secretary of State Dean Rusk, to give Moscow a clear warning against intervening by force. Rusk rejected the recommendation with two words: ‘No action’. This laconic statement, according to the author, embodies the whole US reaction to the Czechoslovak crisis. The military intervention none the less took the Johnson Administration by surprise. The Administration unanimously agreed that the United States could not get involved in the crisis militarily, and concentrated instead on deterring the Soviets from further possible interventions in Romania, Yugoslavia, and perhaps even Austria, a threat that was, however, probably more psychological than real. Apart from that, the White House had to face the suspicion, expressed by a considerable part of the Western communications media and also, for example, by French official circles, that it had given the Kremlin the green light for the military operation. The primary aim of US policy here was to continue the process of international détente. This was projected into their non-confrontational approach towards the Soviets. Two unexpected consequences of the intervention, argues the author, were increased unity in the North-Atlantic Alliance and a reconsideration of plans to withdraw US troops from Europe.
Lutz Klinkhammer Tato stať, kterou v časopise Soudobé dějiny pokračuje seriál o vývoji a dnešním stavu disciplíny soudobých dějin ve vybraných evropských zemích, původně vyšla pod názvem „Novecento statt Storia contemporanea: Überlegungen zur italienischen Zeitgeschichte“ a je převzata ze sborníku editorů Alexandra Nützenadela a Wolfganga Schiedera Zeitgeschichte als Problem: Nationale Traditionen und Perspektiven der Forschung in Europa (Göttingen, Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht 2004, s. 107–127). Tyto významy autor ilustruje jednak na příkladech přehledů a učebnic italských dějin, jednak na aktuálních sporech o historické činy papežů a katolické církve, o světla a stíny italského národního sjednocení v šedesátých letech 19. století a údajnou levicovou ideologizaci poválečného italského dějepisectví. Od devadesátých let pak podle autora trvají ostré spory o hodnocení odboje (včetně komunistických zločinů) a fašistické republiky ze Salò, v nichž je patrná snaha o „plíživou rehabilitaci“ fašistické minulosti a které by svědčily pro tezi, že italské soudobé dějiny ve vlastním smyslu začínají rokem 1943. and This article, which is one of a series in Soudobé dějiny on the development of the discipline of contemporary history and its current state in selected countries of Europe, was originally published as “Novecento statt Storia contemporanea? Überlegungen zur italienischen Zeitgeschichte” in Alexander Nützenadel and Wolfgang Schieder (eds), Zeitgeschichte als Problem: Nationale Traditionen und Perspektiven der Forschung in Europa (Göttingen: Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht, 2004, pp. 107–27). The author argues that in Italy, unlike Germany or France, there is no distinct term for “contemporary history” to denote this clearly defined discipline of historical research. The term storia contemporanea had three meanings since 1945. First, it was used to denote an historical period of roughly the last two centuries. Second, it meant only the “short” twentieth century (il novecento). Last, the term served to denote any historical event in its “contemporary” dimension, that is to say, its instrumentalization according to current needs, political or otherwise. The author illustrates these meanings by providing examples from surveys and textbooks of Italian history and from current debates on the historical actions of the popes and the Roman Catholic Church, the bright and dark sides of Italian unifi cation in the 1860s, and the alleged left-wing ideologization of post-war Italian historiography. In this historiography was born the “myth of resistance” to the German occupation of 1943–45, the other side of which was the marginalization of Italian Fascism or even its being made taboo. This corresponded to the interests of the broad anti-Fascist political coalition in Italy. More penetrating research into Italian Fascism did not begin to appear till the 1960s. Since the 1990s, according to the author, there have been fierce disagreements in assessments of the resistance (including Communist crimes) and the Nazi-puppet state known as the Salò Republic, in which there has been an evident endeavour to achieve the “creeping rehabilitation” of the Fascist past, which would speak in support of the argument that Italian contemporary history really begins in 1943.
The cuticular structure of juveniles of several oribatids of different families with wrinkled cuticles were compared: Hermannia gibba, Tectocepheus velatus, Scutovertex minutus, Achipteria coleoptrata and Eupelops occultus. Both the surface and internal structures of the "plissée" were studied. Light microscopy revealed several patterns in mites studied with Masson's triple stain and these results were supported by TEM. Although the "plissée" looks similar at the body surface, the structure and ultrastructure differ among groups. Some types of wrinkling is supported by small muscles, probably for changing body shape. Differences in the structure of the cuticle of the prosoma and opisthosoma were observed. The differences in the wrinkling in the cuticle in diferent lines is associated with change in the body shape in response to different moisture conditions.

Tomu odpovídala jeho pozice v poválečném Československu, kde vystřídal funkce ministra školství, ministra práce a sociálních věcí, prvního předsedy Československé akademie věd atd. Nikdy rovněž nevytvořil alternativní koncepci, která by se v podstatných rysech vymykala oficiální stalinské doktríně kultury a kulturní politiky., The article is an outline of a fragment of the political biography of the leading Communist intellectual and politician Zdeněk Nejedlý (1878–1962), in which the author tries to depict Nejedlý’s role in making Czechoslovak policy on the arts and culture after the Liberation in May 1945 and, particularly, after the Communist takeover of February 1948. He then seeks to link this role with the personal side of Nejedlý’s life. He presents Nejedlý as a respected historian and musicologist and as a participant in debates on politics and the arts, who in the interwar period had increasingly inclined towards the radical leftwing and gained considerable authority owing to his participation in the struggle against Nazi Germany, particularly as a member of the Communist leadership-in-exile in Moscow (having joined the Party in 1939). A consequence of this was his position in post-war Czechoslovakia, where he held a number of posts, including Minister of Education, Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, and the first Chairman of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. After the Liberation Nejedlý was often a leading maker of Communist policy on the arts and culture in Czechoslovakia and its successful propagandist. Nevertheless, he was not as strong a player as Václav Kopecký, Minister of Information, who stayed in power till 1952, or Gustav Bareš, Head of the Cultural and Propaganda Department of the Central Committee of the CPCz, Kopecký’s main competitor in the field, both of whom had the main jurisdiction and controlled the mechanisms for determining cultural policy. Nejedlý’s ideas about culture and the arts were relatively simple – it should be “of the people” (lidová), relevant to the times, realistic, part of a programme, and based on national tradition, which, however, he interpreted selectively (with an emphasis on Hussitism and the National Revival) and with a political purpose (in the spirit of the ideological indoctrination of society). Owing to Nejedlý’s efforts to maintain a clearer continuity between the culture of the “builders of Socialism” (budovatelská kultura) and the past, the source of which was supposed to be “progressive” figures and the works of the composer Bedřich Smetana, the novelist Alois Jirásek, and other Revivalists, the author of the present article shares much with interpretation of scholars like Alexej Kusák, ranking Nejedlý among the moderate politicians of the CPCz, who after the February 1948 takeover represented a certain alternative to those pushing for a radical “purge” of Czech cultural heritage. In view of his weak position, and in the power hierarchy and, on the other hand, his strong loyalty to the Party line, Nejedlý only rarely clashed with Party radicals publicly (for example, when he opposed the automatic transfer of “Soviet experience” to the Czechoslovak school system). The author, in this connection, touches upon Nejedlý’s relationships with some artists and politicians, particularly Kopecký, and provides evidence of displays of devotion towards Nejedlý, which he seems to have welcomed. The author also discusses Nejedlý’s serious health problems in the 1950s, which limited his influence on making policy in culture and the arts, and his psychological state, which was marked by depressions and anxiety about his possible arrest. In the last part of the article the author reflects on why Nejedlý’s work in the 1960s had not inspired the attempts at the reform of socialism in a specifically Czech form, which resulted in the “Prague Spring” of 1968. Apart from the fact that Nejedlý’s late Revivalist values and aesthetics in this period had become hopelessly outdated, this was so, he argues, probably because Nejedlý had helped to justify the show trials in the early 1950s and was therefore perceived as a symbol of the worst excesses of the Stalinist régime. Nor did he ever come up with an alternative concept that would have essentially diverted from official, Stalinist doctrine on the arts and culture.
The article shows the Bohemian lands in the 17th century as mediated by travelogues of English provenance, in particular travel diaries written both for personal use only and to be later published. Attention is mainly focused on the religious situation in Bohemia and Moravia and its transformation in the studied period in the context of the denomination of the English visitors. The paper further briefly describes individual travellers from England, who would come to the European continent for various reasons and would also visit the
Kingdom of Bohemia as part of this trip.
Slova „veřejný“ a „soukromý“ se v římském právu objevují v různých souvislostech. Poslední dva tituly Digest obsahují definice a právní pravidla obecného významu. The words “public” and “private”, appear in Roman law in different contexts. The last two titles of Digest contain definitions and rules of law in general.Based on the analysis of fragments from the works of seven Roman classical jurists, where these surveyed terms are used, it is shown how they
were understood during the heyday of Roman law. The word “private” (privatum/privatus) has in the analyzed texts essentially the same meaning. The term “public” (publicum/publicus) then offers a variety of different options. Sometimes it is public law, but also criminal law, or it is state-related
(belonging to the state, state authority, state interest, taxes, a charge in favour of the state, to act on behalf of the state). In addition, it also has different meanings – the things owned by the state; things owned by the community; things which belong to the city; things that everyone can enjoy. The word “public” then also means that something has been done according to the rules, therefore, in accordance with the law (e.g. a declaration of war) or bears the name of the City Council and People’s Assembly. Thus it always depends on the context in which the term is used.
Vychází přitom z předpokladu, že analýza postavení žen konkrétně a genderu obecně pomáhá identifikovat mocenské vztahy v rámci komunity, která vznikla z donucení. and Women’s memories of their time interned in the Theresienstadt (Terezín) ghetto are different from those of men internees. But what are the memories and what are the mechanisms behind them? At the centre of the author’s research is the adaptation and coping mechanisms of women in Theresienstadt. What was their daily life there? Which roles did they take on? The author analyses gender-specific aspects of Czech-Jewish women’s lives in the ghetto, focusing on how they influenced their narratives as we know them today. The core of the research is based on a sample of thirty biographical interviews from the 1990s, combined with various contemporaneous sources. Having experienced the deportation chiefly in their twenties, they are representative of middle-class, assimilated, emancipated, mostly Czech-speaking women. For the most part these young inmates had to abandon their ways of life as modern, independent women, and made a shift towards performing strongly gendered, supportive roles, focusing on the family and the social group. The author examines the relationship between the shift in this social role, the formation of networks and groups, and their chances of survival. The analysis of the position of women in particular and of gender in general seeks to help us to understand the power relationships within this enforced community.
Podložím celé studie jsou autorovy výzkumy prováděné jednak v tzv. romských osadách na Slovensku a jednak v tzv. romských ghettech v České republice., The main question of the article is whether there exists a specific Roma criminality. In his study, which primarily answers the above mentioned question, the author examines the issue from the socio-cultural perspective, that is he considers “Roma” as bearers of a specific (i.e. Roma) culture and Roma criminality as a specific part of this culture, or more precisely, as a consequence of the contact of the bearers of this culture with the bearers of the culture of the majority (in this case Czech) society. In this sense, the paper represents a criticism of all the conceptions of Roma criminality based on a presumption that criminal behaviour is part of the Roma nature (“it is in their blood”). In this connection, the author makes an attempt to discover the causes of Roma criminality. At a general level, he identifies two types of these causes: 1) causes determined by a specific (i.e. Roma) cultural tradition and 2) causes resulting from the adaptation of the Roma (in a given sense) to the contemporary situation of the Czech society. The empirical data come from research conducted by the author and his fiancée in Roma settlements in Eastern Slovakia and in the so called “Roma ghettos” in the Czech Republic., Marek Jakoubek, and Literatura
Kniha uznávaného amerického historika třetí říše patří ke klasickým pracím o německém wehramachtu. Autor se v ní zabývá především ideologickou indoktrinací Hitlerovy armády, sociálními vazbami uvnitř ní, válečnými zločiny a trestáním jejích příslušníků a konečně mechanismy sebeospravedlňování a poválečnou pamětí německých vojáků. Soud recenzenta o knize je výrazně pozitivní. and This is a review of the Czech translation of Hitler’s Army: Soldiers, Nazis, and War in the Third Reich (New York, 1992). The work, by the respected American historian Omer Bartov, is a classic among books on the Wehrmacht. In it, Bartov is concerned primarily with the ideological indoctrination of Hitler’s army, the social links within it, war crimes, and the punishment of Wehrmacht soldiers, and, ultimately, the mechanisms of self-justification and the post-war memories of German soldiers. The reviewer praises it highly.
I přes dobrou prognózu, kterou se vyznačuje ve většině případů, ji nelze podcenit a zaslouží si náležitou pozornost a léčbu, která umožní předcházet případným komplikacím., Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TTC) is an acute syndrome characterized by rapid onset of transient systolic dysfunction of the left ventricle. Symptoms, ECG and laboratory findings resemble acute coronary syndrome, from which TTC differs by the absence of coronary artery disease. In typical cases, TTC is triggered by exposure to unexpected stress and the clinical course and prognosis are very good. We present a case of a 63-year-old woman, in whom the onset of the disease was complicated by ventricular fibrillation. The patient recovered without sequelae thanks to immediate cardiopulmonary resuscitation and following care in a specialized cardiocenter, which involved also implantation of implantable cardioverter defibrillator to prevent sudden cardiac death. Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is an important entity in the differential diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome. Despite very good prognosis in most cases it should not be underestimated and it deserves careful attention and treatment which can prevent harmful complications., and Lumír Koc, Marie Pavlušová, Jiří Pařenica, Jan Maňoušek, Jitka Vlašínová, Jindřich Špinar, Petr Kala

To vyvolalo nelibost vedoucích míst v Německé demokratické republice, která nicméně začala povolovat cesty svých občanů do dřívějších německých východních oblastí. Organizační těžkosti spočívaly především v nedostatečné kapacitě polských ubytovacích zařízení a nízké úrovni služeb, což východoněmečtí turisté kriticky vnímali zvláště ve srovnání s poměry v českých Krkonoších. Nepodařilo se také dosáhnout toho, aby přítomnost turistů z NDR v Polsku pomohla k vytvoření obrazu „dobrého Němce“., This article charts out the emergence and development of tourism between the Polish People’s Republic and the German Democratic Republic in the area of the Giant Mountains (Karkonosze/Riesengebirge/Krkonoše), taking into consideration the conditions on the Czechoslovak side. For this area, which had been settled by Germans and was traditionally a popular tourist destination, the end of the Second World War was an historic turning-point. The subsequent expulsion of the Germans thoroughly changed the ethnic composition of the population and Poland set out on the path to become a Communist state. This area was closed to foreign visitors practically until the mid-1950s. That changed in 1956, when, in connection with partial political liberalization in the country and anticipated financial profit, the Giant Mountains area was made accessible (as were, later, the Sudeten Mountains) and state support was provided for tourism from both the East bloc (particularly Czechoslovakia) and the West, including the German Federal Republic. Poland signed an agreement with West Germany on the reuniting of separated families, since some West German citizens came from areas now in Poland and longed to visit their old home. Though East German leaders were at first displeased by this, they nonetheless began to allow their citizens to visit the erstwhile German areas further east. Whereas the authorities’ fears of the political repercussions of West German tourism predominated in Poland in the late 1950s, considerably restricting travel for them, collaboration in tourism with East Germany continued to develop in the 1960s, including the establishment of a joint tourist region in the Giant Mountains (though that was not as intense as between Czechoslovakia and East Germany or as between Poland and Czechoslovakia). Using Polish and East German archive records, the author nonetheless shows the political and organizational problems that arose from this. He discusses in greater detail an isolated incident from the early 1960s, when a group of East German tourists in the Giant Mountains of Poland outraged the local inhabitants with Nazi behaviour and caused alarm at the border by climbing Śnieżka Mountain without permission. This was then dealt with at the highest political level. There were organizational difficulties mainly in the insufficient capacity of Polish accommodations for tourists and the poor quality of services, which the East German tourists were critical of, particularly when they compared what was available in the Czech Giant Mountains. The presence of East German, and tourists in Poland did not help to create an image of the ‘good German’.
Stručně charakterizuje nejhlučnější z těchto skupin (pražskou radikální levici, reprezentovanou Josefem Jodasem a Eduardem Famírou, ostravské stalinisty a olomoucké ortodoxní komunisty, sestávající převážně z pedagogů tamní univerzity), přibližuje jejich cíle, postupy a největší akce (říjnovou schůzi v libeňské Čechii a aktiv Lidových milicí na pražské Homoli, listopadové shromáždění Svazu československo-sovětského přátelství v pražské Lucerně a několik dalších). Poté autor přechází k popisu činnosti radikální levice v Hradci Králové a tamním kraji, která dosud nebyla v odborné literatuře zachycena. Autor líčí na základě archivních materiálů její průběh, naplněný radikálními hesly a proklamacemi, následné odmítavé ohlasy komunistických i jiných organizací a alibistický přístup k této záležitosti v hradeckém okresním výboru KSČ. Nakonec rámcově sleduje nástup „normalizace“ v okresní a krajské organizaci KSČ v Hradci Králové a nejbližší osudy hlavních aktérů uvedené kauzy., The author introduces his article with a general description of the political groupings that openly supported interventionist interests after the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia in August 1968. He stresses that the groups were few in number, though after a while, in the autumn and winter of 1968, they were relatively influential. Not only did they provide the occupying forces with various information, but also, thanks to their links to Soviet circles they could act as intermediaries applying pressure on the gradually growing trend of political ‘realism’ embodied by Gustáv Husák. He provides a concise description of the most vocal of these groups (the Prague radical left, represented by Josef Jodas and Eduard Famíra, the Ostrava Stalinists and the Olomouc orthodox Communists, comprising mainly teachers at Olomouc University). He familiarizes us with their goals, approaches, and the biggest events (including the October meeting in Čechie, Libeň, and the meeting of the People’s Militias at Homole, Prague, and the November meeting of the Union of Czechoslovak-Soviet Friendship, at the Lucerna, Prague). The author then describes the activity of the radical left in Hradec Králové and the surrounding region, which had hitherto not been discussed in the scholarly literature. This activity entailed three or four meetings with soldiers of the armies of occupation, which culminated in the kind of event organized by a commission for work with pre-war Party members and Party members of merit at the District Committee of the Czechoslovak Communist Party in Hradec Králové on 17 October 1968. Using archive records, the author describes the meeting, its radical slogans and proclamations, and the subsequent negative response of Communist and other organizations and the buck-passing approach to the matter, which predominated in the Hradec Králové District Committee of the Party. The article ends with an outline of the beginning of ‘Normalization’ in the district and regional organizations of the Party in Hradec Králové and the lives of the main actors in the immediate aftermath of this story., and Materiál
Autor si klade za cíl přiblížit okolnosti a popsat průběh vynuceného přesídlení obyvatel z těsné blízkosti západní hranice Československa v důsledku zesílení její „ochrany“ v době vrcholícího stalinismu a studené války. V menším rozsahu nucené migrace z pohraničí pokračovaly i posléze v důsledku úprav hraničního a zakázaného pásma. V letech 1952 až 1960 zaniklo v zakázaném pásmu více než sto vesnic a ve vylidněných lokalitách pohraničí bylo provedeno přes pětačtyřicet tisíc demolic., The article aims to describe the forced resettlement of the inhabitants from the areas at the western frontier of Czechoslovakia in consequence of the aim of the State to increase the security of these areas at the height of Stalinism and the Cold War. The border zone was set up in April 1950, and ran in a width of between two and six kilometres from the demarcation line. A year later a ‘forbidden zone’ was drawn over it, which ran a consistent two kilometres in width from the frontier and included 126 villages. Whereas people branded ‘politically unreliable’ were forced to move out of the border zone, while others were subject to various security measures, everyone was forced to move out of the forbidden zone. More than 5,000 Anotace people were affected by the operation, which took place from November 1951 to April 1952, overseen by the state security forces. The author notes that often neither the public nor even the local authorities were sufficiently informed though rumours spread and people grumbled, few spoke out openly against it, and, from the point of view of the authorities, the operation took place largely without complications. On a smaller scale forced migration continued in consequence of the adjustments to the border zone and the forbidden zone. From 1952 to 1960 more than 100 villages were obliterated in the forbidden zone, and more than 45,000 buildings were demolished in the depopulated villages of the borderlands., and Materiály
Tato skutečnost souvisí se silně zakořeněným českým antiklerikalismem a zaběhnutým sledem pohřebních obřadů, jež s postupem času v komunistickém režimu pevně zakotvily jako součást společenského řádu. and In this article the authors analyse mutually related but, at least as regards Czech society, not always directly interdependent aspects of the cremation movement in the twentieth century: the growth in pro-cremation propaganda and its impact, the establishment of new crematoria, the spread of the popularity of cremation as a method of disposing of the dead throughout society and changes in the rituals associated with it. The long domination of ideology over social interests with regard to cremation is evident, for example, in the fact that in the first half of the twentieth century the cremation movement attracted substantially more followers than those who eventually chose this method of disposal for themselves, a method that was later encouraged and eventually accepted throughout Czech society as a result of pressure from the Communist régime. Furthermore, for many years, the construction and decoration of crematoria, as well as ceremonies connected with cremation, reflected ideological perspectives rather than practical social needs. The authors explain this in terms of Czech attitudes towards religion, which were influenced by a number of factors, not just the Communist regime. The subsequent de-ideologization of these various aspects was quite slow, not taking place till the late twentieth century, and then only to a limited extent. Contemporary Czech society has one of the highest cremation rates in Europe, a fact connected both with deep-rooted Czech anticlericalism and with the path dependence of funeral rituals that became firmly entrenched during the Communist era.

The Academy of Sciences Library has purchased a so far unknown illumination with Bohuslav Hasištejnský’s epitaph of Jan of Vartenberk († 1508) from the Swiss antiquarian bookshop Dr. Jörn Günther Rare Books AG. The illumination, Hasištejnský’s epitaph (with the meaning adjusted to the context) and the commemorative inscription present the figure of the Litoměřice Canon Jan of Vartenberk, who was sent to Pavia by Charles IV in 1355 to fetch the relics of St Vitus. We suppose that this illumination was probably made for Jan Jiří of Vartenberk as a component of a larger whole around 1615.

„economical cases“. and The author deals with the development of the federal judiciary in the United States in the last decade of the 18th and the first quarter of the 19th century, from the perspective of the dramatic constitutional developments that took place at that time and which often positioned federal judiciary in the front line of the battle between the two then warring factions of American politics – the Federalists and Republicans. This, of course, insistently raises the vital question of who supervises whether the acts of state are in accordance with the Constitution or not. Although these problems are dealt with in the late 18th century – the author in this context, especially highlights Hamilton’s famous “Essay No. 78” from the “Federalists Papers”, or even the Judiciary Act of 1789. The author concludes that the “founding Age”, which lays down the principles of federal judiciary, as well as the question of judicial review of constitutionality, and when they take their solid forms, can also be considered (and perhaps even more) to be the first quarter of the 19th century. The article obviously analyzed the key case of the U.S. constitutional
history “Marbury v.Madison” and the “economical cases”.
The author of this article reacts to a discussion study by Radim Šíp “How to Revive ‘Frozen’ Evolutionary Ontology” (Filosofický časopis, 62, 2014, No. 3). He argues that Šíp’s critique is unacceptable, as is his proposal for a radical reform of the doctrine of Josef Šmajs. He draws attention to Šíp’s misinterpretation of the evolutionary-ontological theory of information and to the consequences of this misinterpretation for the other arguments in Šíp’s text. Šmajs‘ diagnosis of the problematic relation of culture and nature consists in a cleavage between natural information (structural and semantic) and socio-cultural information (semantic and structural). Šíp, however, mistakenly supposes that in evolutionary ontology there is an opposition between semantic, experiential information (natural and cultural) on the one hand and structural, genetic information (natural) on the other. It is only because of this misinterpretation that Šíp can treat the conflict between culture and nature as a conflict between man and nature, subject and object. Only thus can he treat evolutionary ontology as early-modern metaphysics and call for the recognition of a greater continuity between nature and culture – for the “appreciation” of allegedly unappreciated socio-cultural information.

The question of the reasons for the extreme variation in morbidity among the gene carriers of acute porphyria and the great diversity of the precipitating factors are approached by the aid of a model of interacting genomic circuits. It is based on the current paradigm of the acute porphyric attack as a result of a toxic proximal overload of the enzyme-
deficient heme-biosynthetic patway. Porphyrogenic influx of precursors is seen as a consequence of uncontrolled induction of its gate-keeping enzyme, ubiquitous 5-aminolevulinate synthase (ALAS1), due to attenuated post-translational control of the enzyme combined with activated gene transcription. Focus is directed on the genomic
control of the master-regulator of ALAS1-transcription, the nuclear receptor pair constitutively active receptor (CAR) and pregnane xenobiotic receptor (PXR). On activation by their ligands, i.e. lipophilic drugs, solvents, alcohols, hormonal steroids and biocides, these DNA-binding proteins transform xenobiotic or steroid stimuli to coordinated
activations of gene transcription-programs for ALAS1 and apo-cytochromes P450 (apo-CYPs), thus effecting the formation of xenobiotic-metabolizing cytochrome P450 enzymes. The potency of the CAR/PXR-transduction axis is enhanced by co-activators generated in
at least four other genomic circuits, each triggered by different external and internal stimuli clinically experienced to be porphyroge
nic, and each controlled by co-activating and co-repressing modulators. The expressions of the genes for CAR and PXR are thus augmented by binding glucocorticoid receptor (GR) activated by a steroid hormone, e.g, cortisol generated in fasting, infection or different forms of stress. The promotor regions of ALAS1 and apoCYPs contain binding sites for at least three co-activating transcription factors enhancing CAR/PXR transduction: i.e. the ligand-independent growth hormone (GH)-pulse controlled hepatocyte nuclear factor 4 (HNF4), the insulin-responsive forkhead box class O-(FOXO) protein pathway activated in stress and infection, and the proliferator-activated receptor gamma co-activator 1 al
pha (PGC-1alpha) circuit responding to glucagon liberated in fasting. Many interactions and cross-talk take place within the tangle of genomic circuits that control ALAS1-transcription, which may explain the extreme inter- and intra-individual variability in morbidity in acute porphyria. Reasons for gender-differences are found in sex-dependent control of HPA- and GH-activity as well as in direct, or GR-mediated effects on CAR/PCR activation. Constitutional differences in individual porphyric morbidity may be discussed along lines of mutations or duplications of genes for co-activating or co-repressing nuclear proteins active at different levels within the circuits.
The paper discusses the history of the relation between feminist scholarship and cultural anthropology as two ways of thinking about culture and social relationships. It focuses in particular on the feminist critique of the anthropological theory and ethnographic research. In points out the different epistemological and political standpoints of feminism and anthropology as the sources of the tensioned relationship between these two traditions of thinking about culture.
Čtenářská úspěšnost de Zayasových výkladů podle autorů prozrazuje, že konvenují stále značné části německé společnosti, která před kritickým pohledem na nedávnou minulost dává přednost „mýtu vyhnání“., In this polemical essay the authors present the American lawyer and historian Alfred-Maurice de Zayas (born in Havana, in 1947), who has become one of the most successful authors of German literature on the expulsion of the Czechoslovak Germans (Vertreibungsliteratur). They also discuss his Nemesis at Potsdam: The Anglo-Americans and the Expulsion of the Germans, which has been published in six English editions and at least ten German (first by Routledge & Kegan Paul, in London and Boston, in 1977, most recently in a revised and expanded edition by Herbig, Munich – Die Nemesis von Potsdam: Die Anglo-Amerikaner und die Vertreibung der Deutschen). The book considers how eleven million Germans living east of the post-war German frontier lost their homeland between 1939 and 1949. According to the authors of the essay, the book, with its notes and bibliography, meets the criteria of professional historiography in terms of form, but it is not actually conceived as empirical research on events and developments. Rather it is more like discovery proceedings for an indictment of the Allied forces, who, de Zayas alleges, were seeking revenge against Germans, rather than justice. In terms of content, the book contains nothing new, more or less reproducing the historical stereotypes of the Germans, Czechs, and Poles, and their relations with each other, in the way these have been transmitted mainly in German ‘expulsion historiography’ and journalism. Thus, for example, the Munich Agreement of September 1938 is seen as the logical outcome of the unjust arrangement of central Europe after the Great War; the German minorities’ irredentist ambitions in the successor states are called a reaction to discrimination; and the Sudeten Germans are depicted as the innocent victims of Hitler’s policy. These one-sided pictures of the past, which de Zayas presents, are intended, according to the reviewers, mainly to justify current political aims – namely, reparation for the ‘expellees’ from the formerly German eastern territories in keeping with international law in the form of ‘Recht auf Heimat’ (that is, the right to return to the homeland), restitution of property, and compensation for damages. De Zayas, however, completely ignores the fact that such arguments have not been accepted by any court of law. His success amongst readers reveals, according to the reviewers, that his interpretations continue to suit considerable parts of German society, which prefer the ‘myth of expulsion’ to a critical view of the recent past., and Diskuse
To mi prozradil ředitel Ústavu teoretické a aplikované mechaniky AV ČR prof. Miloš Drdácký, s nímž jsme také navštívili mecenášovu životní souputnici paní Ludmilu Rákosovou. and Marina Hužvárová.
In the course of cytogenetic studies on Alegoria castelnaui Fleutiaux & Sallé 1889 (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae: Tenebrioninae: Ulomini) from Guadeloupe, a number of adult specimens were dissected. A larva was found in the abdomens of almost all of the females. The karyotype, 20,XX / 20,Xyp, and the presence of heterochromatin at multiple chromosomal locations, of the larvae and adults were similar, which excludes parasitism and indicates viviparous reproduction. The adverse habitat of the adults, i.e., putrid and fermenting pseudo-stems of banana trees rather than geo-climatic conditions, may explain the occurrence of viviparity in this species. This is the first example of (ovo-)viviparity in the Ulomini tribe and among New World Tenebrionidae. A. castelnaui is regularly collected on banana trees infested with the weevil Cosmopolites sordidus Germar, 1824, a major pest of banana trees around the word. The coexistence of these two species on banana trees may be coincidental but another Ulomini species, Eutochia pulla Erichson 1843, is described as an egg predator of C. sordidus in Africa and therefore, A. castelnaui could also be a predator of this pest.
