The nematode Rhabdochona anguillae Spaul, 1927, a specific intestinal parasite of the European eel, Anguilla anguilla (L.), is redescribed and illustrated from specimens collected from eels of the Sousa River, northern Portugal (prevalence 20%, intensity 2-13). The species is characterized by the presence of 14 anterior teeth in the prostom, small non-bifurcate deirids, absence of lateral preanal papillae, by the length (0.460-0.660 and 0.130-0.150 mm) and the shape of spicules, fairly large (0.041-0.054 x 0.025-0.030 mm) mature eggs without filaments, and by the bluntly pointed to rounded tip of the tail. Its morphological features are discussed in relation to other congeneric species. This nematode has hitherto been recorded only from eels in southern Europe (Portugal, Spain, Bulgaria).
The syntypes of Deltokeras omitheios Meggitt, 1927 (the type-species of Deltokeras Meggitt, 1927), a parasite of Urocissa erythrorhyncha (Passeriformes, Corvidae) in South Asia, are redescribed. Deltokeras is considered a monotypie genus. An amended generic diagnosis is presented.
Trichodina kamchatika Konovalov, Shevlyakov et Krasin, 1970 is redescribed based on specimens obtained from the gills and body surface of brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) from Nova Scotia and Quebec, Canada and its taxonomic history briefly reviewed. This is the first report of T. kamchatika from North America.
It has been reported that the virulence of axenically cultivated Entamoeba histolytica increases following growth with cholesterol. The purpose of this study was to determine whether cholesterol would enhance the virulence of axenically cultivated Naegleria fowleri. Amoebae were cultivated in axenic medium with (100 pg/ml) or without cholesterol for 6 months and tested in mice for changes in virulence. After 6 months of continuous cultivation, N. fowleri grown with cholesterol was less virulent for mice than the same strain grown without cholesterol.
Within the frame of study of ethnical stereotypes was also elaborated the problem of the image of the Gypsy in folklore songs of the Czech lands. The attitude of majorite society towards the Gypsy is being reflected in an original way in folklore texts, sometimes quite differently from the way the coexistence of Romani and non-Romani population looked in everyday reality. After a short period of more amiable attitude to the minority that differed from the majority not only by the outer appearance and lifestyle, but also by different psyche and philosophy, the reality brought to the Romani persecution and accentuated racism especially in the during the World War II. On the other hand the folklore production comments the existence of Romani population mainly in joking, humorous way, or in a neutral way, through simple stating of certain facts. We don’t find markedly negative tones. In the texts of folk songs certain stereotypical images leveled off that comment primarily the appearance of the Romani people (black Gipsy woman, white teeth, curly hair), their activities (smithery) or different lifestyle (wandering). The range of songs reflecting the Gypsy is not big, is stable and with limited number of themes. To these belong both songs recorded in isolated cases and great groups of variants documented in many regions.
