Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is the result of interaction between a chronic hemodynamic overload and non-hemodynamic factors. There are several lines of evidence presented in this work suggesting that nitric oxide (NO) may participate in the hypertrophic growth of the myocardium. First, endothelial NO production was shown to be decreased in several types of hemodynamically overloaded circulation both in animals and humans. Second, compounds stimulating NO production were able to diminish the extent or modify the nature of LVH in some models of myocardial hypertrophic growth. Third, arterial hypertension can be induced by inhibition of nitric oxide synthase activity. This NO-deficient hypertension is associated with the development of concentric LVH, myocardial fibrosis and protein remodeling of the left ventricle. The mechanism of LVH development in NO-deficient hypertension is complex and involves decreased NO production and increased activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. Cardiovascular protection via ACE inhibition in NO-deficient hypertension may be induced by mechanisms not involving an improvement of NO production. In conclusion, the hypertrophic growth of the LV appears to be the result of interaction of vasoconstrictive and growth stimulating effects of angiotensin II on the one hand and of vasodilating and antiproliferative effects of nitric oxide on the other., F. This paper discusses the pottery finds from the 2003–2005 excavation of the settlement at Pellendorf/Gaweinstal in the central eastern area of the Weinviertel district in Lower Austria. The early medieval settlement was occupied from the 7th to the 10th centuries. The pottery finds from the 9th/10th century are characterised by shapes typical of the Mikulčice and Blučina pottery groups and of the March pottery in southern Moravia, and thus revealing intensive contact to the Great Moravian centres on the River March in that period. The paper also mentions further sites with the same pottery in northern Lower Austria, which, taken as a whole, indicate that in the 9th century the area was culturally, economically, and thus presumably also politically, closely connected to the Moravian Empire. and Výzkum sídlištní lokality Pellendorf/Gaweinstal ležící ve středu východní části oblasti Weinviertel (Dolní Rakousko) poskytl v letech 2003–2005 keramický materiál, který je diskutován v předložené studii. V celkovém pohledu tento nálezový inventář svědčí o úzkém kulturním, ekonomickém, a patrně i politickém propojení příslušných oblastí Dolního Rakouska s Velkou Moravou v 9. století.
The founder of meditational Buddhism, according to tradition, is Bodhidharma, who originated from India. He is called Putidamo or Damo in Chinese, Boridalma or Dalma in Korean and Bodai Daruma or Daruma in Japanese. His legendary representation can often be seen in the visual art and popular culture of East Asian countries. The paper focuses on the visual representations of Bodhidharma, as they became popular in Japan and Korea. The paper is based on a previous piece of research, undertaken when the author summarized existing information about Bodhidharma, as revealed in primary and secondary textual sources. As part of this research, the author analyzed this information, together with visual sources, in order to trace the formation of the legend and iconography of Bodhidharma from the very beginning. The aim was also to describe their dynamics. Studying the text image relationships, the author here shows, through an analysis of a famous episode of Bodhidharma’s legend, the “Crossing the Yangzi River on a reed”, that images other than Bodhidharma’s had a considerable impact in relation to influencing and altering later texts, as well as the consequent images, thus changing and enriching religious traditions. The power of images can be seen through the commercialization of Bodhidharma’s representations in contemporary Korea as well as in Japan, where commercialization started much earlier and in significantly different forms when compared to Korea. Since most of the publications dealing with Bodhidharma focus on Chinese and Japanese developments, this paper introduces Korean Bodhidharma imagery into the discussion for the first time in a Western language, indicating the importance of studying the differences and similarities in relation to the formation of images of the same legendary figure in context. The focus is on the sources of their models and the degree of change, as well as on how these cultures differ from each other or in relation to their incorporation of images.
The operating mode of a gas turbine depends not only upon the intake air parameters but also upon a degree of regeneration. The paper analyses the effect of a regeneration degree on the operation of a considered GT 750-6 gas turbine using a special software developed for this purpose. Based on case calculations, the effect of a degree of regeneration on the specific power and thernal efficiency of the actual GT 750-6 gas turbine is quantified. and Obsahuje seznam literatury
People who do not act on their judgments regarding what they ought to do-their practical judgments-are often considered weak-willed, especially when the judgment is made at a time when the act it favors is plainly possible. Is this a kind of practical irrationality, perhaps due to an incoherence between practical reason, which should guide intention and action, and behavior that fails to conform to a guiding directive? More generally, do normative beliefs with the same kind of self-directive content as practical judgments possess the same sort of rational authority, if indeed they must have any such authority? At least since Aristotle, weak-willed action has often been considered irrational. This paper indicates why that view is plausible, but also why it is too strong. The paper shows how the practical authority of normative judgments can be overridden and why, on the theory of rational action suggested by analysis of such cases, certain initially plausible action-guiding principles are too strong. The concluding part of the paper briefly indicates how that theory can do justice to the analogy between practical and theoretical reason and to the essential connection between the two., Lidé, kteří nečiní podle svých úsudků ohledně toho, co mají dělat - jejich praktických úsudků - jsou často považováni za slabé, zejména když je rozsudek učiněn v době, kdy je čin, který upřednostňuje, jasně možný.
Th is paper looks at the women in and around the Yugoslav philosophical journal Praxis (1964–1974), some of whom would later become leading feminist activists in Yugoslavia during the late 1970s and 1980s. Th ese women, while being students of philosophy, mediated knowledge from abroad by reviewing and commenting on new publications from the West. Since translations of these books were not yet available in Yugoslavia, the role these women played as reviewers can be highlighted as important to how Praxis and the journal’s associated summer school became international platforms for the exchange of ideas between the mid-1960s and the early 1970s. In presenting the role of women in the journal Praxis, this paper engages with an issue concerning the presence of female intellectual authors as producers of knowledge. Th us, it points out further possible areas of research in gender history and the history of the Left.
Metoda. Jako míry byly použity škály sebelitování a sebeznevýhodňování. Vztahy mezi sebelitováním a sebeznevýhodňováním byly zjišťovány korelační analýzou a mnohonásobnou regresní analýzou. Výsledky. Korelační analýza poukázala na negativní vztah faktorů sebelitování: laskavost k sobě, běžná lidskost a dbalost a pozitivní vztah faktorů sebelitování: sebeposouzení, izolace a přehnaná identifikace, k sebeznevýhodňování. A growing body of research has found that higher self-compassion is associated with greater psychological and cognitive well-being. Therefore self-compassion can be considered as playing an important role on selfhandicapping, while different dimensions of self-compassion may play different roles. However there is no research that investigated the possible links between these variables. Purpose. The purpose of this research was to examine the relationship between self-compassion and self-handicapping. Participants. Participants were 408 university students – 201 (49%) were female and 207 (51%) were male – who enrolled in various undergraduate programs at Sakarya University Faculty of Education, Turkey. Method. The Self-compassion Scale and the Self-handicapping Scale were used as measures. The relationships between self-compassion and self-handicapping were examined using correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. Results. In correlation analysis, self-kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness factors of self-compassion were found negatively and selfjudgment, isolation, and over-identification factors of self-compassion were found positively related to self-handicapping. According to regression results, self-handicapping was predicted positively by self-judgment, isolation, and over-identification. Further common humanity predicted self-handicapping in a negative way. Self-compassion has explained 51% of the variance in self-handicapping. Limitations. The results obtained in this study should not be generalized either to all university students or to other student populations, since the data were collected at just one campus in Sakarya University, Turkey. Also the data reported here for self-compassion and self-handicapping are limited to self-reported data and did not use a qualitative measure of these variables., Ümran Akin, Ahmet Akin., and Obsahuje seznam literatury
