Celestial pole offsets are the displacements between the observed position of the Earth’s spin axis in space and its position predicted by the adopted models of precession and nutation. At present, the models are IAU2006 and IAU 2000, respectively. The celestial pole offsets are regularly measured by Very Long-Baseline Interferometry (VLBI), the observations being coordinated and published by the International VLBI Service for Geodesy and Astrometry (IVS). These offsets contain a mixture of several effects: the unpredictable free term, Free Core Nutation (FCN) that is due to the presence of the outer fluid core of the Earth, forced motions excited by the motions in the atmosphere and oceans, and also imperfections of the adopted precession-nutation models. The geophysical excitations are also available, as determined by several atmospheric and oceanographic services. The aim of this paper is to compare the time series of these integrated excitations with the observed celestial pole offsets and estimate the level of coherence between them., Cyril Ron and Jan Vondrák., and Obsahuje bibliografii
Probability logic studies the properties resulting from the probabilistic interpretation of logical argument forms. Typical examples are probabilistic Modus Ponens and Modus Tollens. Argument forms with two premises usually lead from precise probabilities of the premises to imprecise or interval probabilities of the conclusion. In the contribution, we study generalized inference forms having three or more premises. Recently, Gilio has shown that these generalized forms "degrade'' -- more premises lead to more imprecise conclusions, i. e., to wider intervals. We distinguish different forms of degradation. We analyse Predictive Inference, Modus Ponens, Bayes' Theorem, and Modus Tollens. Special attention is devoted to the case where the conditioning events have zero probabilities. Finally, we discuss the relation of degradation to monotonicity.
Frőhlich formulated the hypothesis of coherent electrical polar oscillations in biological systems. The hypothesis predicts that generated electromagnetic field with a dominant electric component has a basic role in organization, transport, and interactions inside a cell and among cells. If mitochondria are entirely functional, the cellular cytoskeleton satisfies conditions for excitation of coherent states, which are assumed to be essential for normal biological activity. Malfunctioning mitochondria and disintegrated cytoskeleton result in disturbances of the Frőhlich's mechanism and consequently -- together with biochemical disturbances -- can lead to malignant properties of cancer cells.
Although the sizes of the geographical ranges of plant and animal species are of major interest to macroecologists, the spatial distributions and environmental correlates of only a small group of animals and plants are well studied. Here data on the spatial distributions of 116 European clearwing moths (Sesiidae) was used to determine the patterns in spatial distribution, postglacial colonization and endemism. The spatial distributions of sesiids are significantly more coherent and there are fewer isolated occurrences and unexpected absences than predicted by a random sample null model. After correcting for environmental correlates, islands and mainland countries did not differ significantly in the number of species with small ranges. Polyphagous wood attending species were more widespread than those with other life histories. Species of Siberian origin had wider ranges than those of Mediterranean origin. Nestedness and species co-occurrence analysis did not support a unidirectional postglacial colonization from a Southern European refuge but colonization from both Southern and Eastern Europe. and Werner Ulrich, Marek Bąkowski, Zdeněk Laštůvka.
In this paper I will propose that the unpalatable consequences of narrow-scope principles are not avoided by altering the scope of the principle but by changing the kind of conditional. I argue that a counterfactual conditional should do the trick and that the rational requirement of modus ponens can be understood as something like a ''Ramsey test'' on this conditional., V tomto příspěvku navrhnu, aby nedocházelo k nežádoucím důsledkům zásad úzkého rozsahu tím, že se změní rozsah této zásady, ale změnou druhu podmíněnosti. Domnívám se, že kontrafaktuální podmíněnost by měla dělat trik a že racionální požadavek modus ponens může být chápán jako něco jako ,,Ramseyho test'' na tomto podmíněném., and David Botting
People who do not act on their judgments regarding what they ought to do-their practical judgments-are often considered weak-willed, especially when the judgment is made at a time when the act it favors is plainly possible. Is this a kind of practical irrationality, perhaps due to an incoherence between practical reason, which should guide intention and action, and behavior that fails to conform to a guiding directive? More generally, do normative beliefs with the same kind of self-directive content as practical judgments possess the same sort of rational authority, if indeed they must have any such authority? At least since Aristotle, weak-willed action has often been considered irrational. This paper indicates why that view is plausible, but also why it is too strong. The paper shows how the practical authority of normative judgments can be overridden and why, on the theory of rational action suggested by analysis of such cases, certain initially plausible action-guiding principles are too strong. The concluding part of the paper briefly indicates how that theory can do justice to the analogy between practical and theoretical reason and to the essential connection between the two., Lidé, kteří nečiní podle svých úsudků ohledně toho, co mají dělat - jejich praktických úsudků - jsou často považováni za slabé, zejména když je rozsudek učiněn v době, kdy je čin, který upřednostňuje, jasně možný.
An algebra A is uniform if for each ∅ ∈ Con A, every two classes of ∅ have the same cardinality. It was shown by W. Taylor that coherent varieties need not be uniform (and vice versa). We show that every coherent variety having transferable congruences is uniform.
