The durable structures of housing and housing institutions are often subject to long-term processes of incremental change. Nevertheless, housing studies have largely focused either on static snapshots of policies or, more recently, on the inertia of institutional path dependence, while processes of incremental change have been almost entirely neglected. Political scientists (Streeck/Thelen/Mahoney) have proposed a typology of patterns of incremental institutional change, and this paper explores the applicability of this typology to housing structures and housing institutions. We draw on empirical illustrations from the housing literature to show how five types of change – layering, conversion, displacement, drift, exhaustion – apply to housing structures and institutions. We conclude with some general observations on how the typology can be used in further studies of developments in national housing regimes.
Výskumná štúdia nadväzuje na výskum zaoberajúci sa identifikáciou signifikantných prediktorov neetického správania uskutočneného za účelom dosiahnutia cieľa (Čopková, Matyiová, & Bartko, 2017). Cieľom prezentovanej štúdie bola analýza komplexných vzťahov pravdepodobnosti sformovania zámeru porušiť normu v akademickej oblasti za účelom dosiahnutia cieľa a premenných predstavujúcich jeho potenciálne predpoklady. Analyzované boli dáta od vzorky 154 vysokoškolských študentov vo veku od 18 do 25 rokov (Mvek = 21,57, SD = 1,76), 80,5 % tvorili ženy; 19,5 % muži. Analýzou komplexných vzťahov prostred-níctvom modelovania štrukturálnymi rovnicami bol preukázaný priamy pozitívny efekt personálneho normatívneho presvedčenia, nepriamy negatívny efekt svedomitosti a nepriame pozitívne efekty machiavelizmu, morálnych výpadkov pri akademickom podvádzaní a sebaoprávňovania v dosahovaní cieľa na pravdepodobnosť sformovania zámeru porušiť normu za účelom dosiahnutia cieľa. and The research study follows the study focused on the identification of significant predictors of non-ethical behavior in a goal directed behavior (Čopková, Matyiová, & Bartko, 2017). The aim of the current study was the analysis and significance verification of wider connections and relations of probability of behavioral intention´s to violate norm in order to attain academic goal. 154 Slovak university students have participated in the study (80,5 % women; Mage = 21,57; SD = 1,76). Using structural equations, the direct positive effect of personal normative belief, indirect negative effect of conscientiousness, indirect positive effect of Machiavellianism, moral disengagement about cheating and self-licensing in goal attainment on a probability of behavioral intention´s to violate norm in order to attain academic goal formation were identified.
Two new species of Polydictya Guérin-Méneville, 1844 from Vietnam, P. grootaerti sp. n. from Central Vietnam and P. drumonti sp. n. from North Vietnam, are described and compared with the closest species, P. chantrainei Nagai & Porion, 2004 and P. kuntzi Nagai & Porion, 2004. The male genitalia are described and illustrated for the two new species as well as for P. vietnamica Constant & Pham, 2008 for the first time. Habitus details and photographs, a distribution map and photographs of specimens in nature when available, are provided. The occurrence of P. vietnamica from Thailand and Northeast India, noted here for the first time based on photographs taken in nature, requires confirmation based on the examination of specimens. Liver pathologies and infection with Toxoplasma gondii (Nicolle et Manceaux, 1908) are widespread among HIV-infected patients. However, a possible contribution of toxoplasmosis to the development of various forms of liver diseases in HIV-infected individuals has not yet been determined. This research is a retrospective cohort study. Medical cards of 907 HIV-positive patients, including 119 individuals who died, were studied. The patients were divided into two groups: 531 patients were seropositive to T. gondii and 376 seronegative. General liver pathology was more widespread among patients seropositive to T. gondii than in seronegative patients (63.1 ± 2.1% and 51.9 ± 2.6%, respectively, p < 0.001). The association of seropositive to T. gondii with general liver pathology is weak both in the whole cohort (Pearson's contingency coefficient C = 0.112), and among the deceased patients (C = 0.228). and Chronic HBV-HCV coinfection was more common in the seropositive than in seronegative individuals as it was found both in entire cohorts (26.0 ± 1.9% and 18.6 ± 2.0%, respectively, p = 0.010) and in died patients (31.0 ± 5.5% and 14.6 ± 5.1%, respectively, p = 0.041). Toxoplasma gondii had a weak role in distributing of HBV-HCV coinfection between cohorts (C = 0.187). In both cohorts in patients with chronic hepatitis, regardless of its etiology, there was no significant difference in alanine transaminase activity (ALT). Cirrhosis of the liver occurred 4.5 times more often in deceased seropositive patients than in the entire seropositive cohort (23.9 ± 5.1 and 5.3 ± 2.0, respectively, p = 0.0006) whereas it no significantly increased in seronegative cohort (10.4 ± 4.4 against 4.8 ± 1.1, p > 0.05). In them T. gondii is weakly involved in cirrhosis formation (C = 0.168). Thus, in HIV-infected patients, T. gondii is a weak nonspecific adjunct that supports chronic liver inflammation and progression of cirrhosis, regardless of etiology, but does not influence the degree of hepatitis activity. The increased prevalence of HBV-HCV coinfection in patients seropositive for T. gondii may be related to their risk factor behaviour associated with uncontrolled blood contacts.
Chyliza vittata is known to utilize leaves, stems and underground parts of several leafy and leafless orchids. Compared to the well-recorded feeding habits of C. vittata in Europe, its feeding habits in Japan are poorly studied. Thus, further records of its host plants and the habits of its larvae in Japan are likely to reveal the similarities and differences in its feeding habits in Europe and Japan. The current study reports C. vittata feeding on the stems of the mycoheterotrophic orchid Yoania japonica in central Japan. This study also showed that in spite of the small size of Yoania its reproductive success is not severely reduced when infested with C. vittata, whereas the robust stems of Gastrodia elata, which is its main host plant in Japan, are thought to be a defence against infestation by C. vittata., Kenji SUETSUGU., and Obsahuje bibliografii
Joint immobilization is frequently administered after fractures and ligament injuries and can cause joint contracture as a side effect. The structures responsible for immobilization-induced joint contracture can be roughly divided into muscular and articular. During remobilization, although myogenic contracture recovers spontaneously, arthrogenic contracture is irreversible or deteriorates further. Immediately after remobilization, an inflammatory response is observed, characterized by joint swelling, deposit formation in the joint space, edema, inflammatory cell infiltration, and the upregulation of genes encoding proinflammatory cytokines in the joint capsule. Subsequently, fibrosis in the joint capsule develops, in parallel with progressing arthrogenic contracture. The triggers of remobilization-induced joint inflammation are not fully understood, but two potential mechanisms are proposed: 1) micro-damage induced by mechanical stress in the joint capsule, and 2) nitric oxide (NO) production via NO synthase 2. Some interventions can modulate remobilization-induced inflammatory and subsequent fibrotic reactions. Antiinflammatory treatments, such as steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and low-level laser therapy, can attenuate joint capsule fibrosis and the progression of arthrogenic contracture in remobilized joints. Antiproliferative treatment using the cellproliferation inhibitor mitomycin C can also attenuate joint capsule fibrosis by inhibiting fibroblast proliferation without suppressing inflammation. Conversely, aggressive exercise during the early remobilization phases is counterproductive, because it facilitates inflammatory and then fibrotic reactions in the joint. However, the adverse effects of aggressive exercise on remobilization-induced inflammation and fibrosis are offset by anti-inflammatory treatment. To prevent the progression of arthrogenic contracture during remobilization, therefore, care should be taken to control inflammatory and fibrotic reactions in the joints.
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is neuropathy that occurs due to compression of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel. Acromegaly is one of the important causes of CTS. The aim of this study was to examine median nerve with ultrasound in acromegalic patients and to assess the relationship with activity, duration of disease and body composition parameters. We prospectively examined the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the median nerve with high-resolution ultrasound in 107 acromegalic patients – control group (70 females and 37 males) and 107 healthy controls (70 females and 37 males) matched for age, gender, and BMI. Body composition parameters were assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). The Student t-tests and Pearson correlation were used for data analysis. The cross sectional area of the median nerve was increased in acromegalic patients compared to controls (11.9±4.8 mm2 vs. 7.7±2.4 mm2 , P<0.001). Positive correlation was found between IGF-1 levels and CSA in the acromegalic group (R = 0.400, P<0.001). Relationship between CSA and duration of acromegaly was not confirmed. In acromegalic patients, BMI correlated with the CSA (R=0.294, P=0.002). There was no significant difference in BMI, fat mass between the acromegalic and control group, but lean mass was higher in acromegalic patients compared with controls (54.8±13.3 vs. 51±11.6, P=0.047). Lean mass and LMI (total body lean mass/height) positively correlated with CSA in acromegalic patients (R=0.340, P<0.001; R=0.424, P<0.001). No correlation was observed between fat mass and CSA of median nerve in all groups. We confirmed the enlargement of the median nerve in acromegalic patients. This enlargement is proportional to the degree of IGF-1 levels and is not dependent on the duration of the disease. The enlargement of the median nerve in acromegalic patients also depends on lean body mass and is not dependent on fat body mass.
Histidine (HIS) is an essential amino acid investigated for therapy of various diseases, used for tissue protection in transplantation and cardiac surgery, and as a supplement to increase muscle performance. The data presented in the review show that HIS administration may increase ammonia and affect the level of several amino acids. The most common are increased levels of alanine, glutamine, and glutamate and decreased levels of glycine and branched-chain amino acids (BCAA, valine, leucine, and isoleucine). The suggested pathogenic mechanisms include increased flux of HIS through HIS degradation pathway (increases in ammonia and glutamate), increased ammonia detoxification to glutamine and exchange of the BCAA with glutamine via L-transporter system in muscles (increase in glutamine and decrease in BCAA), and tetrahydrofolate depletion (decrease in glycine). Increased alanine concentration is explained by enhanced synthesis in extrahepatic tissues and impaired transamination in the liver. Increased ammonia and glutamine and decreased BCAA levels in HIS-treated subjects indicate that HIS supplementation is inappropriate in patients with liver injury. The studies investigating the possibilities to elevate carnosine (β-alanyl-L-histidine) content in muscles show positive effects of β-alanine and inconsistent effects of HIS supplementation. We have studied the influence of both levamisole (AL) and Freund's adjuvant (AF) on the immunisation of mice with the secretory antigens of adults of the liver fluke Fasciola hepatica Linnaeus, 1758. Total IgG antibodies were detected in all groups where the F. hepatica antigen was administered, been levels of IgG1 increased respect to IgG2a antibodies. During immunisation, IL-4 and IFN-γ were only detected in AL and AF groups, but after infection, IL-4 boosted in all groups. IFN-γ increased two fold in AF and AL groups compared to the saline solution (AS) group. Worm recovering was of 32-35% in groups administered without antigen whereas in AS, AL and AF groups recovering was of 25%, 12% and 8%, respectively. Macroscopical lesions in the liver were scarce in AL and AF groups. Our data suggest that immunisation of mice with antigens of F. hepatica enhances the immune response avoiding both liver damage and worm establishment after challenge infection. Parasite life history traits influence the rate of gene flow between populations and the effective population size, both of which determine the levels of genetic variability and the geographic distribution of such variability. In this short review targeted to parasitologists, we summarise how life history traits influence the population genetic structure of parasitic helminths. These organisms are characterised by a wide variety of life cycles and are ecologically different from microparasites, which have been studied in more detail.
