We have surveyed the Earth's surface using gravity anomalies and second-order radial derivatives of the disturbing gravitational potential computed from the gravitational model EGM2008 complete to degree and order 2159 (for selected degrees up to 2190). It corresponds to 5 arcmin resolution on the ground. Over most well known impact crater sites on the Earth we found the second-order derivatives (not available from ordinary gravity surveys) offered finer discrimination of circular features than the gravity anomalies themselves. We also discovered that some of the sites show evidence of double or multiple craters which will need further ground verification. Some of these signatures (in hilly or mountainous terrain) may also need to be corrected for the gravitational effect of topography to sharpen their hidden features., Jaroslav Klokočník, Jan Kostelecký, Pavel Novák and Carl A. a1_The wide chemical diversity of estrogenic compounds precludes an accurate prediction of estrogenic activity on the basis of chemical structure or radioimmunological assay and thus requires that the potency of these compounds is defined by bioassay. The mammary duct growth response in intact prepubertal and adult gonadectomized female and male mice of the C3H/Di strain was used to assess the estrogenicity of synthetic compounds or their derivatives. The vehicle for tested compounds should be free of estrogenic and other hormonal effects. Olive oil or sunflower oil exerted estrogenic activities and were thus unsuitable as vehicles for the tested compounds. The absence of estrogenic activity, high solubility of different steroid hormones, and the low incidence of the inflammatory reactions at the injection site were achieved by using a vehicle containing benzyl alcohol, benzyl benzoate, butylhydroxyanisole, butylhydroxytoluene, ethyl oleate and ethanol. The bioassay was primarily designed to examine the effect of tested compounds on mammogenesis. The duration of hormone treatment was chosen to be long enough for induction of duct growth but too short to induce lobuloalveolar differentiation. Females were treated for 10 days, males for 15 days. The proportional volume occupied by mammary epithelial structures was estimated by the modified Chalkley's technique. The mean coefficient of variation of quantitative evaluation of 10 different mammary glands obtained by two operators varied between 3.2 and 17.4 %. The mean coefficient of variation of quintuplicate determinations of each mammary gland by one operator was 10.1 %, and 11.1 % by the other. The correlation coefficient between results of two operators was 0.994. Estrogens are primarily defined by their ability to increase the mitotic activity of female secondary sex organs., a2_However, our results have shown that progesterone alone, if administered in a high dose, stimulates mammary growth in both intact prepubertal and OV-X female mice similarly as the synthetic progestatial steroid norethindrone with inherent estrogenic properties. In contrast, progesterone alone had no effect, in young intact or adult castrated males, but norethindrone did stimulate mammary growth. These results demonstrated that the mammary gland of males is a suitable model for estrogen screening., J. Škarda., and Obsahuje bibliografii
This paper presents results from the exam ination of flood embankments by means of three geophysical methods: GPR, mutual impedance of loop antennas measurements and D.C. resistivity method. In order to increase measuring accuracy, the mutual impedance measuring system works at a high frequency. Parameters of mutual impedance measuring system were presented. A method of mutual im pedance measurement results was described. Flood embankments examination results showed that the simultaneous use of few geophysical methods increases accuracy of inhomogeneities detection in near-surface structure of the ground., Remigiusz Mydlikowski, Grzegorz Beziuk and Adam Szynkiewicz., and Obsahuje bibliografické odkazy
The presence of Neospora caninum Dubey, Carpenter, Speer, Topper et Uggla, 1988 in small mammals (i.e. murid rodents, Erinaceomorpha, Eulipotyphla and Scadentia) was explored for first time in South-East Asia. A total of 192 individuals from six localities across Thailand were analysed. A general prevalence of N. caninum of 22% was observed, with some variation among localities (5-36%). Four main types of habitat were included and rodents trapped in dry-land habitat (17 positive among 41 individuals) were more likely to be infected with N. caninum than those from other habitats (forest, rain-fed land and settlement). Rodent species identity and individual rodent weight had no influence on individual infection. Our results provided the first data on the presence of N. caninum in rodents in South-East Asia and first report of N. caninum in the order Scadentia., Ornampai Japa, Serge Morand, Anamika Karnchanabanthoeng, Kittipong Chaisiri, Alexis Ribas., and Obsahuje bibliografii
Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) is a technique used to determine the chromosomal position of DNA and RNA probes. The present study contributes to knowledge on jumping plant-lice genomes by using FISH with 18S rDNA and telomeric (TTAGG)n probes on meiotic chromosomes of Psylla alni (2n = 24 + X), Cacopsylla mali (2n = 22 + neo-XY and 20 + neo-X1X2Y), C. sorbi (2n = 20 + neo-XY), Baeopelma foersteri (2n = 14 + X), and Rhinocola aceris (2n = 10 + X). This is the first study that has used FISH on the hemipteran superfamily Psylloidea. We found that the chromosomes of all studied species contain the insect-type telomere motif, (TTAGG)n. In C. mali and C. sorbi, the neo-sex chromosomes originating from autosome-sex chromosome fusions showed no interstitially located clusters of TTAGG repeats, suggesting their loss or inactivation. Similarly, no interstitial (TTAGG)n clusters were detected in an extremely large autosome pair of B. foersteri that most likely originated from a fusion of at least five ancestral chromosome pairs. Clusters of 18S rDNA were detected on the fused and second largest autosome pairs of B. foersteri and on one of the large autosome pairs of the remaining species. In C. mali and B. foersteri, the rDNA clusters were shown to coincide with the NORs as detected by the AgNOR method. Finally, we speculate, based on the obtained FISH markers, on the mechanisms of karyotype evolution of psylloid species differing in chromosome numbers and sex chromosome systems., Anna Maryańska-Nadachowska, Valentina G. The aim of our study was to investigate adrenocortical function in the context of disease activity and inflammatory status in premenopausal RA females. Adrenal glucocorticoid and androgen responses to the 1 μg ACTH 1-24 test were investigated in 23 premenopausal RA and in 15 age- and BMI-matched healthy females. Twelve RA patients were on low-dose prednisone (<8.5 mg/day). Patients with DAS28>3.2 had lower (p<0.05) total plasma cortisol, 17-hydroxyprogesterone, dehydroepiandrosterone and androstenedione responses in the ACTH test compared to healthy controls. Patients with DAS28>3.2 had lower (p<0.05) dehydroepiandrosterone response in the ACTH test compared to patients with DAS28≤3.2. C-reactive protein (CRP), DAS28, and interleukin (IL)-6 negatively correlated with androstenedione response to ACTH 1-24. Responses of all measured adrenal steroids were lower (p<0.05) in patients on low-dose glucocorticoids compared to healthy controls. RA patients not treated with glucocorticoids had lower total cortisol response (p=0.038) but did not differ in free plasma cortisol in the ACTH test. The results indicate an association of increased disease activity with a decrease in adrenal androgen production in RA and normal cortisol bioavailability in patients not treated with glucocorticoids., R. Diabetes mellitus type 2 ranks among the strongest predictors of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) while the association of type 1 diabetes with CVD is more complex. We studied differences between type 1 and 2 diabetic women regarding association of cardiovascular risk factors with preclinical atherosclerosis expressed as intima-media thickness of common carotid (IMT CCA) and femoral arteries (IMT CFA) measured by high resolution ultrasound. Women with type 1 (n=203) and type 2 diabetes (n=123) were examined with regard to the presence of cardiovascular risk factors. In type 1 diabetic women strong association between IMT CCA and body mass index, waist circumference, and total body fat was found in contrast to type 2 diabetic women. In type 2 diabetic women strong association between IMT CCA and fasting glucose, glycated hemoglobin, and atherogenic index of plasma (log TG/HDL cholesterol) was observed in contrast to type 1 diabetic women. In type 1 diabetic women, IMT CFA was associated with body fat in contrast to type 2 diabetic women. Preclinical atherosclerosis in type 1 diabetic women was strongly associated with factors reflecting body fat and its distribution, while in type 2 diabetic women preclinical atherosclerosis was associated with markers reflecting glucose and lipid metabolic disorders., P. The objective of this work is the chemometric quantification of minerals in rocks. A chemometric method was developed for the determination of chlorite, muscovite, albite and quartz in claystones and clay shales using infrared spectroscopy. Bromide pellets and diffuse reflectance were used to measure the infrared spectra; principa l component analysis and partial least-squares regression were used as chemometric methods. Spectral regions (4000-3000 cm-1 and 1300-400 cm-1) containing important spectral information were chosen by principal compone nt analysis. The calibration models were created by a partial least-squares regression. The mean relative error and relative standard deviation were calculated for the assessment of accuracy and reproducibility. The value of the mean relative error was about 10 % for most of the calibration models. The value of the relative standard deviation ranged from 1.1 to 3.0 % for most calibration models based on diffuse reflectance spectra and from 4.0 to 9.2 % for most calibration models based on spectra obtained with bromide pellets., Michal Ritz, Lenka Vaculíková, Eva Plevová, Dalibor Matýsek and Jiří Mališ., and Obsahuje bibliografické odkazy
