Cytochrome oxidase activity from the retina can be enhanced or depressed by free radical-mediated reactions both in positive and negative aspect. The greatest effect was exerted by ischemia/reperfusion, which significantly increased the fluorescent products of lipid peroxidation (358 %, P<0.01) and inhibited the enzyme activity (14 %, P<0.001). After hyperoxia the fluorescent products slightly increased (192 %, P< 0.05) as well as the enzyme activity (133 %, P<0.05). Hypoxia had no effect on any of these parameters. Specific changes in the composition of fluorophores after ischemia/reperfusion were revealed in the fluorescence spectra. The fact that increased lipid peroxidation after hyperoxia and after ischemia/reperfusion does not produce the same effect upon cytochrome oxidase activity might be explained by changes in the kinetic behavior of cytochrome oxidase. In the control enzyme preparation, two binding sites for cytochrome c were observed. One was of the low-affinity (Km=60 mM) and the other of the high-affinity (Km=1.12 mM). After in vitro-initiated lipid peroxidation, the low-affinity binding site was lost and the activity measured under "optimum" conditions at a single cytochrome concentration was higher than in the controls. This implies that oxidative damage to cytochrome oxidase in vivo can be site-specific and its extent should be estimated by performing detailed kinetic analysis as otherwise the results might be misleading., A. Under greenhouse conditions, seedlings of three forest species, baldcypress (Taxodium distichum), nuttall oak (Quercus nuttallii), and swamp chestnut oak (Quercus michauxii) were subjected to an intermittent flooding and subsequent physiological and growth responses to such conditions were evaluated. Baldcypress showed no significant reductions in stomatal conductance (gs) or net photosynthetic rate (PN) in response to flood pulses. In nuttall oak seedlings gs and PN were significantly decreased during periods of inundation, but recovered rapidly following drainage. In contrast, in swamp chestnut oak gs was reduced by 71.8 % while PN was reduced by 57.2 % compared to controls. Baldcypress displayed no significant changes in total mass while oak species had significantly lower leaf and total mass compared to their respective controls. Thus baldcypress and nuttall oak showed superior performance under frequent intermittent flooding regimes due to several factors including the ability for rapid recovery of gas exchange soon after soil was drained. The photosynthesis was investigated 30 d after Pb treatment in Myrica rubra seedlings. The Pb treatment resulted in significantly increased Pb concentrations in shoots. Low Pb concentration exposure (≤2 mM) reduced the net photosynthetic rate (PN), transpiration rate (E), and stomatal conductance (gs) without affecting the intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci), chlorophyll (Chl) content, and Chl fluorescence parameters. At 10 d after severe Pb treatment (≥4 mM), PN was inhibited and accompanied by Chl damage, while at 30 d, the inhibition of PN was followed by an increase of Ci and a decrease of gs, E, Chl content, and Chl fluorescence parameters. The effects of 0, 30, 60, and 90 mM NaCl, and 0 and 5 mM CaCl2 on certain parameters of photosynthesis and growth in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L. cv. Ghara yonjeh) plants were studied. The increasing NaCl concentration in the Hoagland nutrient solution decreased the contents of chlorophylls and the net photosynthetic rate, and increased the rate of respiration (RD) and CO2 compensation concentration in the leaves of treated plants. The contents of carotenoids (Car) were not significantly affected. The addition of 5 mM CaCl2 enhanced the RD and increased the Car contents in treated leaves. With the NaCl concentration in the culture medium increasing, the dry matter production in both root and shoot decreased, as well as the relative growth rate (RGR), net assimilation rate (NAR), and leaf area ratio (LAR). As a common tree species in northern China, Populus × euramericana "Neva" has an important practical value for the study of continuous cropping obstacles in poplar cultivation. Plant allelopathy is the main reason for continuous cropping obstacles, which are caused by allelochemicals, such as para-hydroxybenzoic acid (p-HB). The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of p-HB on the photosynthesis of poplar. Photosynthetic parameters of Populus × euramericana "Neva" poplar were determined in a pot culture experiment where five p-HB concentrations were used (0, 1, 2, 4, and 6 mmol L−1). Each seedling was treated with 4 L of p-HB solution every seven days, ten times in total. p-HB inhibited the photosynthesis of poplar significantly, as shown by a clear decline in the net photosynthetic rate. We investigated the effect of pertussis toxin (PTX) on hypotensive response induced by acetylcholine (ACh) and bradykinin (BK) and on noradrenaline (NA)-induced pressor response in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). Fifteen-week-old Wistar rats and age-matched SHR were used. Half of SHR received PTX (10 μg/kg/i.v.) and the experiments were performed 48 h later. After the anesthesia the right carotid artery was cannulated in order to record blood pressure (BP). The hypotensive response to ACh was enhanced in SHR compared to Wistar rats. After pretreatment of SHR with PTX the hypotensive response to ACh was reduced compared to untreated SHR and it was also diminished in comparison to Wistar rats. Similarly, the hypotensive response to BK was also decreased after PTX pretreatment. The pressor response to NA was increased in SHR compared to Wistar rats. NA-induced pressor response was considerably decreased after PTX pretreatment compared to untreated SHR. In conclusion, the enhancement of hypotensive and pressor responses in SHR was abolished after PTX pretreatment. Our results suggested that the activation of PTX-sensitive inhibitory Gi proteins is involved in the regulation of integrated vasoactive responses in SHR and PTX pretreatment could be effectively used for modification of BP regulation in this type of experimental hypertension., S. Populus x euramericana cv. ‘Neva’ is an important tree species in northern China. In the study, we used its potted oneyear- old seedlings as experimental material and established three treatments (CK, 0.5X, and 1.0X) according to the concentrations of phenolic acids in order to examine the effects of different concentrations on the photosynthetic characteristics and growth of poplar. With increasing concentrations of phenolic acids, the net photosynthetic rate, stomatal limitation, transpiration rate, apparent quantum yield, photochemical quenching coefficient, electron transport rate, chlorophyll content, and total biomass decreased significantly. The intercellular CO2 concentration, light-compensation point, nonphotochemical quenching, malondialdehyde content, and root/shoot ratio increased significantly. Peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activities initially decreased and then increased. We concluded that phenolic acids significantly inhibited poplar’s photosynthesis and the higher phenolic acid concentration, the greater inhibition of photosynthesis occurred. This inhibition effect was mainly caused by nonstomatal factors. Phenolic acids induced noticeable photoinhibition, resulted in the irreversible damage of membrane structure, and then changed intracellular metabolic processes. As a common waterfront and wet environment tree species, Salix babylonica shows a great potential for restoration of contaminated water or soil environments, such as phenol-polluted water. However, studies on such remediation effects have not been carried out yet. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of phenols on photosynthesis of S. babylonica. Photosynthetic and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters of S. babylonica cuttings were determined in hydroponic experiment, where six phenol concentrations was used (0, 50, 100, 200, 400, and 800 mg L-1). Phenol presence inhibited photosynthesis of S. babylonica significantly, as the net photosynthetic rate (PN),
light-saturated net photosynthetic rate, apparent quantum yield, maximal quantum yield of PSII photochemistry, and effective quantum yield of PSII photochemistry declined significantly. The higher the concentration of phenol solution, the greater inhibition of photosynthesis occurred. Our data indicated that nonstomatal limitation was responsible for the reduction of PN. S. babylonica should be used to remediate phenol-contaminated water, when the concentration of phenol solution is lower than 200 mg L-1. Otherwise, the efficiency of photosynthesis of S. babylonica would decrease markedly. Combustion of coal with limestone (a) and co-combustion of coal with limestone with wood, sewage sludge, soap and PTP (b) were performed in CFB. Inorganic matter composition and properties of all input materials were characterized. For this, chemical and coal petrography analyses of solid samples as well as their leaching tests, unburned carbon, and other properties were determined. There are not striking differences in composition of bottom and fly ashes from combustion/co-combustion data. In fly ash samples higher concentrations of Hg (about 2 ppm), As (about 800 ppm) and chlorine (about 400 ppm) are present than they are in bottom ash (0.002 ppm Hg, 250 ppm As, and 220 ppm Cl). Also relating concentrations of above elements determined in emissions are very similar for combustion/co-combustion regimes (about 0.010 mg.m-3 Hg, 0.027 mg.m-3 As and 24 mg.m-3 Cl). Content of unburned carbon in BA is below 2 wt.% and in FA below 0.6 wt.% in all combustion/co-combustion data. In FA samples the concentration of Hg, As, Se, etc. increases with increasing unburned carbon content, i.e. with decreasing grain size of FA. A new analysis of one of the graves (No. 177) at the burial ground of the Przeworsk culture in Drochlin, Częstochowa District, dated to the C1a phase of the Younger Roman Period, allows us to participate in a discussion about the position of horseman warriors in the milieu of the Przeworsk culture. The preserved grave goods from Drochlin suggest that the buried horseman can be considered a representative of the local elite. The iron spurs decorated with brass, bow arrowheads, and one glass vessel underline his social rank. The spurs have a stylistic association with spurs known from the sphere of Wielbark culture and also to those found on the territory of the Northern European Barbaricum. Similar associations were identified regarding the belt buckle. This paper also examines whether the bow was part of the equipment of the Przeworsk culture warriors or was a hunting weapon.
