Knowledge about the influence of latent toxoplasmosis on development and general biological condition of children is scant and thus the aim of the present study was to investigate these aspects in some detail. We compare school children in rural area seropositive and seronegative to the apicomplexan parasite Toxoplasma gondii (Nicolle et Manceaux, 1908) in terms of their developmental age, body mass and body height, physical fitness and end-of-term grades. Additionally, we evaluated the risk factors of infection with T. gondii such as the presence of cats in the household and eating raw meat products. With IFAT and ELISA tests, the prevalence of anti-Toxoplasma antibodies was 41% (190 children examined) and the rate of infection was higher in girls (44%) than in boys (36%). No significant differences were observed in morphological features and physical fitness of examined children. In girls the level of developmental age measured with electrophoretical mobility of nuclei method was significantly higher and school performance significantly lower for those infected with Toxoplasma than for uninfected; this finding was particularly intriguing. Only boys who ate raw meat products were more likely to be seropositive. The study provides some new information on gender differences in reaction to Toxoplasma infection.
Activation state of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBPCO) is an important parameter determining the rate of net photosynthesis (PN) in situ for which no information is available with reference to altitude. We analyzed activation state along with PN in three plant species and their cultivars grown at low (LA, 1 300 m) and high (HA, 4 200 m) altitudes. No significant change in PN and the initial activity of RuBPCO was obtained with reference to altitude. However, activation state of RuBPCO was reduced significantly in the HA plants as compared to the LA ones. Hence low partial pressure of CO2 prevailing at HA might be responsible for the lower activation state of RuBPCO. and Narinder Kumar, Sanjay Kumar, Paramvir Singh Ahuja.
Lianas perform better than co-occurring trees in secondary forests or disturbed areas. Lianas and trees differ strikingly in water use strategy, which may result in a significant difference in photosynthetic light use between both growth forms. However, the difference in the photosynthetic efficiency and light energy dissipation between these two growth forms is poorly understood. Moreover, photorespiration is an important mechanism of photoprotection under conditions of high light. In this study, we used Bridelia stipularis (Linn.) Bl. (liana) and Strophioblachia fimbricalyx Boerl. (tree) in order to measure the response curves of the gas exchange and photosynthetic electron flow to the incident light gradients and intercellular CO2 concentration, as well as the hydraulic conductivity. We tested whether the photochemical efficiency and photorespiration differed between both growth forms. Our results clearly demonstrated that B. stipularis possessed a significantly higher stem and leaf specific hydraulic conductivity, total electron flow, and maximum rate of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate regeneration compared to the sympatric tree S. fimbricalyx. Correspondingly, B. stipularis exhibited a significantly higher photochemical quenching coefficient and electron flow to photorespiration relative to S. fimbricalyx under saturating light levels. We suggested that photorespiration might play an important role in photoprotection for both species under high light, but particularly for B. stipularis. These findings could enrich our knowledge of the superior photosynthetic and growth performance of lianas over the co-occurring trees., S.-B. Zhang, J.-L. Zhang, K.-F. Cao., and Seznam literatury
a1_Previous studies have focused mainly on the accumulation of photosynthates and less on their distribution in sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.). In addition, the effect of photosynthate accumulation in root tubers on photosynthate distribution was not considered. Thus, a field experiment was carried out from May to October (2011 and 2012) to clarify the differences in photosynthate transport between high- and low-yielding sweet potato. This study mainly focused on the photosynthetic capacities of leaves, photosynthate distribution, and characteristics of photosynthate accumulation in root tubers. Results showed the high-yielding varieties displayed the higher fresh root tuber yield and the economic coefficient than the low-yielding varieties. They also showed greater net photosynthetic rate with a pronounced increase at the early and middle growth stages (8.9% and 11.4%, respectively). After the growth peak, the leaf area index (LAI) of the high-yielding varieties decreased with time and was maintained at 2~3 until harvest, whereas the LAI of the low-yielding varieties decreased slowly. The high-yielding varieties reached the 13C distribution rate ≥ 50% at the early (2011, 2012) and middle (2011) growth stages, whereas the low-yielding varieties reached it at the late (2011) or middle (2012) growth stages. At harvest, the 13C distribution rates in the branches and root tubers of the
high-yielding varieties were 6.0-20.3% and 73.7-91.2%, respectively, whereas those of the low-yielding varieties were 29.6-34.7% and 60.7-63.5%, respectively. The high-yielding varieties showed the remarkable initial potential in root tubers, which was much better than that of the low-yielding varieties. The high-yielding varieties also produced heavier root tubers and the higher number of root tubers per plant at the early bulking stage., a2_The root tubers also attained the greater content of soluble sugar and starch. The high-yielding varieties formed root tubers earlier, showed strong abilities to transport photosynthates into the root tubers, and exhibited a higher mean accumulation rate. These varieties could also reduce the photosynthate consumption in branch leaves and stems. Therefore, the high-yielding varieties established growth advantage for the root tubers earlier. It contributed to a reasonable distribution structure of photosynthates that led to the high root tuber yield. Based on our results, effective agricultural measures can be chosen to improve the root tuber yield of sweet potato., H. J. Liu, S. S. Chai, C. Y. Shi, C. J. Wang, G. B. Ren, Y. Jiang, C. C. Little is known about the viability of myxozoan actinospore stages after harvest from laboratory cultures of infected oligochaete worms. The viability and reactivity of actinospores of three myxozoan species was evaluated after short-term storage at 4°C and 12°C. Two methods of determining actinospore viability were compared: differential fluorescent staining and direct microscopic observation of morphological indicators of spore integrity. Spore reactivity was quantified by measuring polar filament discharge rates in a micro-assay with fish mucus substrate and mechanical stimulation by vibration. The age-dependent viability of the three species showed clear differences. Myxobolus cerebralis actinospores had the shortest effective life span whereas Henneguya nuesslini actinospores survived significantly longer. Storage at lower temperatures yielded higher viability in all species. Myxobolus pseudodispar actinospores were significantly robust up to 12°C when assessed by staining, but showed similar viability characteristics as H. nuesslini when analyzed morphologically. Evaluation of spore viability by fluorescent staining correlated with morphological assessment, although fewer viable actinospores were usually detected microscopically. Polar filament discharge activity of morphologically intact actinospores did not significantly decrease until the third day of storage compared to freshly harvested samples. The results indicate that durability and reactivity trends during storage of actinospores differ among myxozoan species.
Inter-comparisons in the gas exchange patterns and root characteristics under both well-watered and drought conditions were done in three-years-old seedlings of three oak species (Quercus cerris L., Q. frainetto Ten., and Q. ilex L.) growing in controlled environment. Well-watered Q. cerris had greater physiological performances than other oaks, but under drought it was not able to face the water stress showing also structural modifications such as reduction of root length and average diameter. On the other hand, Q. ilex maintained root growth both in drought or well-watered soils. Moreover, it was able to keep open stomata also under water stress, although stomatal conductance (gs) was low. Q. frainetto had an intermediate position in regard to its physiological and root structural characteristics between Q. cerris and Q. ilex under drought stress. For all oaks the relationship between gs and the ratio of sub-stomatal and ambient CO2 concentration (Ci/Ca) highlighted the dynamic adaptation of gs to the increase of hydraulic resistances of leaf, stem, and roots portions, more evident during the air humidity change and progressive soil dehydration. This suggests a well-triggered above-and under-ground mechanism to endure the drought stress. and F. Manes ... [et al.].
The aim of this study was to investigate the reaction of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) system to various stressors (fasting, crowding, cold and heat) by measuring blood ACTH and corticosterone (CORT) concentration as well as the cholesterol (CHOL) content in the adrenals. To examine the effects of stress termination, the rats were returned and kept under control conditions for the same period as that of stress duration (supposed recovery period). According to our results HPA system was activated by all the stressors applied. Heat seems to be the strongest stressor since the exposure of animals to a high ambient temperature resulted in the greatest rise of plasma ACTH concentration as well as CORT synthesis and secretion. These values remained elevated after the stress termination i.e. after the rats had been returned to room temperature. Fasting seems to be the weakest stressor given because it causes the smallest increase in blood ACTH and CORT concentrations. Moreover, in refed rats the HPA function was fully recovered. In conclusion, the various stressors applied seem to induce a different response of the HPA system as judged by quantitative changes in ACTH and CORT release., J. Djordjević, G. Cvijić, V. Photosynthetic light curve, chlorophyll (Chl) content, Chl fluorescence parameters, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) activity and reactive oxygen metabolism were studied under drought stress in two autotetraploid rice lines and corresponding diploid rice lines. Net photosynthetic rate decreased dramatically, especially under severe drought stress and under high photosynthetic active radiation in diploid rice, while it declined less under the same conditions in autotetraploid lines. Compared with the corresponding diploid lines, the Chl content, maximum photochemical efficiency of photosystem (PS) II, and actual photochemical efficiency of PSII were reduced less in autotetraploid lines. PEPC activities were higher in autotetraploid rice lines. PEPC could alleviate inhibition of photosynthesis caused by drought stress. The chromosome-doubling enhanced rice photoinhibition tolerance under drought stress. The lower MDA content and superoxide anion production rate was found in the autotetraploid rice indicating low peroxidation level of cell membranes. At the same time, the superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT) activities were higher in autotetraploid rice lines. SOD, POD, and CAT could effectively diminish the reactive oxygen species and reduced the membrane lipid peroxidation., P.-M. Yang, Q.-C. Huang, G.-Y. Qin, S.-P. Zhao, J.-G. We evaluated the effects of N G -nitro-L-arginine methylester (L-NAME) (50 mg/kg/day) and 7-nitroindazole (7NI) (10 mg/kg/day) administered from 10th-16th week of age either individually or together on cardiovascular system of Wistar rats and SHR. Systolic blood pressure (sBP) was measured weekly by the plethysmographic method. For morphological studies, the animals (n=10) were perfused with a fixative (120 mm Hg), and thoracic aorta and carotid and co ronary arteries were processed for electron microscopy. For functional investigation (n=10), aortic rings were used in an or gan bath. In Wistar rats, L-NAME evoked an increase of sBP; hype rtrophy of the heart and arterial walls; an increase in cross-sectional areas (CSA) of endothelial cells (EC), muscle cells (SMC), extracellular matrix (ECM), and a decrease in acetylcholin e-induced endothelial-dependent relaxation (EDR). 7NI evoked sBP-independent hypotrophy of the heart and arterial walls, a decrease in CSA of EC and SMC without affecting the CSA of ECM, and a mild decrease in acetylcholine-induced EDR. 7NI and L-NAME administered together evoked lower effect on BP and trophicity of the heart and all arteries, and a similar de crease in acetylcholine-induced EDR compared to L-NAME alone. In SHR, 7NI did not evoke any effect on the studied parameters., F. Kristek, M. Drobna, S. Cacanyiova., and Obsahuje bibliografii
Under physiological conditions the mammalian circadian system is synchronized to a cyclic environment. The central oscillator in the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) responds predominantly to an external light (L) dark (D) cycle. Peripheral oscillators are more efficiently synchronized by metabolic cues. When the circadian system is exposed to opposing synchronizing cues, peripheral oscillators uncouple from the SCN. To consider influence of phase advances and delays in light regimens mimicking shift work, we analyzed the expression of clock genes (per2, bmal1) and natriuretic peptides (anp, bnp) in the heart of male rats. Experimental groups were exposed to a rotating LD regimen with either 8 h phase advance or delay for 11 weeks. Samples were taken for a 24 h cycle in 4 h intervals. Peripheral oscillators responded to rotating phase advance by decreasing rhythm robustness, while phase delay mostly influenced the phase angle between the acrophase of rhythmic gene expression and the external LD cycle. The expression of anp was arrhythmic in the heart of control rats and was not influenced by rotating LD regimens. The expression of bnp showed a daily rhythm with a nadir during the active phase. The daily rhythm in bnp expression diminished under rotating LD regimen conditions., I. Herichová, J. Ambrušová, L'. Molčan, A. Veselá, P. Svitok, M. Zeman., and Obsahuje bibliografii
