We present a weaker version of the Fremlin generalized McShane integral (1995) for functions defined on a $\sigma $-finite outer regular quasi Radon measure space $(S,\Sigma ,\mathcal {T},\mu )$ into a Banach space $X$ and study its relation with the Pettis integral. In accordance with this new method of integration, the resulting integral can be expressed as a limit of McShane sums with respect to the weak topology. It is shown that a function $f$ from $S$ into $X$ is weakly McShane integrable on each measurable subset of $S$ if and only if it is Pettis and weakly McShane integrable on $S$. On the other hand, we prove that if an $X$-valued function is weakly McShane integrable on $S$, then it is Pettis integrable on each member of an increasing sequence $(S_\ell )_{\ell \geq 1}$ of measurable sets of finite measure with union $S$. For weakly sequentially complete spaces or for spaces that do not contain a copy of $c_0$, a weakly McShane integrable function on $S$ is always Pettis integrable. A class of functions that are weakly McShane integrable on $S$ but not Pettis integrable is included.

The wing stalk in Diptera is examined, and its structures are re-evaluated and re-interpreted. The non-homology of A2 in Tipulomorpha and "A2" in other Diptera is claimed. Some notes are presented on the higher-level phylogeny of Diptera, especially those concerning Tipulomorpha. The family Trichoceridae is restored among Tipulomorpha, and the Tipulomorpha are re-affirmed as the sister group of the remaining Diptera. The clade Anisopodidae + Culicomorpha + Bibionomorpha is suggested as the sister group of Brachycera.
The solid-state NMR measurements play an indispensable role in studies of interactions between biological membranes and peptaibols, which are amphipathic oligopeptides with a high abundance of α-aminobutyric acid (Aib). The solid-state NMR investigations are important in establishing the molecular models of the pore forming and antimicrobial properties of peptaibols, but rely on certain simplifications. Some of the underlying assumptions concern the parameters describing the 15N NMR chemical shielding tensor (CST) of the amide nitrogens in Aib and in conventional amino acids. Here the density functional theory (DFT) based calculations were applied to the known crystal structure of one of peptaibols, Ampullosporin A, in order to explicitly describe the variation of the 15N NMR parameters within its backbone. Based on the DFT computational data it was possible to verify the validity of the assumptions previously made about the differences between Aib and other amino acids in the isotropic part of the CST. Also the trends in the magnitudes and orientations of the anisotropic components of the CST, as revealed by the DFT calculations of the full periodic structure of Ampullosporin A, were thoroughly analyzed, and may be employed in future studies of peptaibols., J. Motivated by the fact that logicians and computer scientists working
in fuzzy logic hardly seem to take notice of the prolific and broad discourse on vagueness in analytic philosophy, we provide an overview of the most irnportant topics and trends in the ‘vagueness debate’. In particnlar we list a range of different phenornena of vagueness that should be addressed by any full-fledged theory of vagueness. Moreover we propose a classiíication of theories of vagueness and suggest various criteria for their evaluation.
The paper presents new methodology how to find and estimate the main features of time series to achieve the reduction of their components (dimensionality reduction) and so to provide the compression of information contained in it under keeping the selected features invariant. The presented compression algorithm is based on estimation of truncated time series components in such a way that the spectrum functions of both original and truncated time series are sufficiently close together. In the end, the set of examples is shown to demonstrate the algorithm performance and to indicate the applications of the presented methodology.
BACKGROUND: The current treatment of hereditary hemochromatosis (HH) consists of performing periodic whole blood phlebotomies. Erythrocytapheresis (EA) can remove up to three times more red blood cells per single procedure and could thus have a clinical benefit. A prospective study of 30 consecutive cases of HH were included in a periodic EA program. METHODS AND PATIENTS: EA were performed using a discontinuous flow cell separators. The protocol consisted of a bimonthly EA until normalization of the serum ferritin was reached. The aim was to reduce the total erythrocyte volume by 25-35%, eventually, to adjust the amount so that hematocrit would not drop below 0.25. RESULTS: 530 +/- 101 ml of erythrocytes were removed (median 517, range 116-761 ml). Iron depletion (ferritin < 20 microg/l) was achieved in all patients after a mean 6.9 +/- 7.6 months, median 5 months, range 1-36 months and a mean 14 EA sessions. The procedures were well tolerated and there were no severe side-effects. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that HH patients treated with EA achieved iron depletion quickly under good conditions of tolerance. The relationship between the minimum metabolic requirements (standard metabolic rate, SMR) and energy costs of non-mandatory physiological functions and behaviour is fundamental for understanding species responses to changing environmental conditions. Theory predicts that ectotherms manage their energy budget depending on whether the relationship between SMR and energy available for other tasks is negative (allocation model), neutral (independent model), or positive (performance model). Energy management has received more attention in endotherms than in ectotherms, where metabolic-behavioural relations may be affected by body temperature variation. We examined the predictions of energy management models at four body temperatures in alpine newts, Ichthyosaura alpestris, under laboratory conditions. High SMR reduced the amount of energy dedicated to food digestion and locomotor activity. The maximum metabolic rate for food digestion was positively related to SMR, while its relationship with locomotor activity was inconclusive. Body temperature affected the intercept but not the slope of these relationships. We conclude that (i) newts manage their energy budget according to the allocation model, (ii) energy management is insensitive to body temperature variation, and (iii) determining energy management models using indirect estimates may be misleading. These findings improve our understanding of the eco-evolutionary significance of SMR variation in tailed amphibians and other ectotherms.
