We investigated the photosynthetic characteristics of Chorispora bungeana under conditions of drought stress caused by different concentrations of polyethylene glycol-6000 (PEG; 0, 5, 20, and 40%) and various concentrations of exogenous glycine (0, 5, 10, and 20 mM) with 20% PEG. We showed that moderate and severe drought stress of PEG reduced the chlorophyll (Chl) content (both Chl a and b), maximal quantum yield of PSII photochemistry (Fv/Fm), actual photochemical efficiency of PSII in light (YII), and quantum yield of regulated energy dissipation (YNPQ), while Chl a/b and quantum yield of nonregulated energy dissipation (YNO) increased. The low and moderate drought stress increased Mg2+ and Fe3+ contents, while a decrease in Mg2+ and Fe3+ was found under severe drought stress. Compared to sole PEG stress, the addition of exogenous 10 mM glycine increased Chl, Mg2+ and Fe3+ contents, Fv/Fm, YII, and YNPQ, and reduced YNO. On the contrary, 20 mM glycine showed an opposite effect, except for YNO. Our results proved that Chl contents and fluorescence parameters are reliable indicators for drought tolerance of C. bungeana. We suggest that a proper glycine content can relieve the effect of drought stress on C. bungeana., N. Yang, C.-L. Wang, W.-P. He, Y.-Z. Qu, Y.-S. Li., and Seznam literatury
Three-month-old plants of mulberry (Morus alba L. cv. Kanva-2) were subjected to a drought stress by withholding water supply. As the leaf water potential (ΨW) was dropping progressively with the severity of treatment and increasing stress duration, the values of leaf area, dry mass accumulation, total chlorophyll (Chl) content, net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (gs), and transpiration rate (E) were declined. The photosystem 2 (PS2) photochemical efficiency significantly decreased only at a severe stress treatment. The intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) remained unaltered during a mild stress, yet it increased under moderate and severe stresses. The Ci/gs ratio reflected the mesophyll efficiency during water stress. Rewatering of the plants led to an almost complete recovery of PN, E, and gs, indicating that a short-term stress brings about reversible effects only. and S. Ramanjulu ... [et al.].
Photosynthetic rate (PN), SPAD value, specific leaf area (SLA), flag leaf area (FLA), and nitrogen content (LN) of genus Oryza were investigated and their correlation was analyzed to assess some of the main photosynthetic traits among different species in the genus Oryza. The results revealed wide variation in these traits. The species O. rufipogon and O. australiensis exhibited maximum photosynthetic rate. Comparison of different types of genomes (diploid: 2n=2x=24; tetraploid: 2n=4x=48) and growth habit (shade- or sun-grown) showed the species of diploid (with genome symbol EE; 2n=2x=24) genomes, with perennial and sun-grown species, had high apparent photosynthesis compared to others. The species with BB/BBCC, shade-grown and the tetraploids showed high SPAD value, and the flag leaf in sun-grown species and diploids were thicker (low SLA) compared with others. However, no significant difference could be noticed among the different types of genomes. Higher leaf area was noticed among the species of CC/CCDD genome, perennial shade-grown species and tetraploids than in others. The variety IR 36 exhibited highest leaf nitrogen concentration. Correlation analysis showed a strong relationship between PN and leaf nitrogen concentration while no marked relationships were observed among other characteristics. It implies that the species with thick and small leaves with high nitrogen concentration and high photosynthesis evolved better than others. O. rufipogon, with the same genome as O. sativa, could be one of the wild rice resources for elite crop improvement. and M. Zhao ... [et al.].
Unlike mulberry (Morus alba, M.a.), paper mulberry (Broussonetia papyrifera, B.p.) can acclimate to Karst soil and incline to alien invasion. The photosynthetic parameters, diurnal changes of carbonic anhydrase, and chlorophyll fluorescence induction, and water potential were measured on sunny days (SD) and cloudy days (CD). Photosynthetic midday depression occurred in B.p. but not in M.a. The irradiance-and CO2-saturated photosynthetic rates of B.p. were significantly higher than those of M.a. There was no significant difference in water use efficiency between the two species on a SD. The maximum fluorescence, maximum quantum yield, photochemical quenching, and relative electron transport rate in the leaves of B.p. were much higher than those in M.a. The activity of carbonic anhydrase (CA) of B.p., on either an SD or a CD, was much greater than that of M.a. Higher transpiration rate (E) and net photosynthetic rate (PN) of B.p. resulted in the lack of water in mesophyll cells. Although a higher CA activity of B.p. supplied both water and CO2 for the photosynthesis of mesophyll cells, water in mesophyll cells was the factor limiting photosynthesis, and the intercellular CO2 concentration of B.p. was high and stable. and Y.-Y. Contents of chlorophylls and carotenoids in yellow-green mutant Biao 810S were approximately half those in control type 810S. Biao 810S had fewer grana lamellae and looser structure than 810S, lower volume of starch granules in chloroplasts, but under high temperature and high irradiance the net photosynthetic rate (PN) of Biao 810S was higher than that of 810S. The chlorophyll fluorescence parameter Fv/Fm of Biao 810S was little higher and photochemical quenching qP was obviously higher than those of 810S. No significant differences in PN and biomass were observed in their hybrid combination. The yellow-green mutant phenotype may be a useful genetic marker of P(T)GMS rice used for hybrid seed production. and L.-J. Ou ... [et al.].
Saturation (SI) and compensation (CI) irradiances [µmol(photon) m-2 s-1] were 383.00±18.40 and 12.95±0.42 for wild C. nitidissima (in mid-July) and 691.00±47.39 and 21.91±1.28 for wild C. sinensis, respectively. C. nitidissima is a shade tolerant species, whereas C. sinensis has a wide ecological range of adaptability to irradiance. Both wild and cultivated C. nitidissima demonstrated low maximum net photosynthetic rate, maximum carboxylation rate, maximum electron transfer rate, and SI, which indicated low photosynthesis ability of leaves that were unable to adapt to strong irradiance environment. Both C. nitidissima and C. sinensis demonstrated strong photosynthetic adaptabilty in new environments. Hence proper shading may raise photosynthetic efficiency of cultivated C. nitidissima and promote its growth. and X. Wei ... [et al.].
Biao 810S is a chlorina mutant of the thermosensitive genic male sterile (TGMS) rice. We compared photosynthetic characteristics of these two lines. The contents of chlorophylls and carotenoids in Biao 810S were approximately half of those in 810S. However, the net photosynthetic rate (PN) of Biao 810S was higher than that of 810S under high irradiance or low concentration of carbon dioxide, and the photon quantum efficiency was higher than that of 810S. The activity of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase in Biao 810S was only 69.80 % of that in 810S, but the activities of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase and NADP-malic enzyme were 79.50 and 69.06 % higher than those of 810S, respectively, suggesting that the efficiency of photon energy utilization in Biao 810S was enhanced by reduction of thermal dissipation and increase of electron transfer rate to generate sufficient assimilation power for the dark reactions. Consequently, the increased activities of C4 photosynthetic enzymes lead to more effective fixation of CO2 and the synergistic effect of light and dark reactions contributed to the higher PN of Biao 810S. and L.-J. Ou ... [et al.].
The rate of accumulation of total chlorophyll (Chl) and carotenoids (Car) of leaves grown under high irradiance, HI (30 and 45 W m-2) was faster than at moderate irradiance, MI (15 W m-2). However, the senescence phase started earlier in the samples and proceeded at a faster rate. Chl a/b and Chl (a+b)/Car values showed faster loss of Chl a (compared to Chl b) and Chl (a+b) (compared to Car) in HI leaves. Protein accumulation and loss were also similar to that of Chl (a+b) content. Increase in Chl fluorescence during the development phase may suggest a gradual change in thylakoid organisation, however, the temporal kinetics were different in HI and MI samples. Increase in fluorescence polarisation during senescence of HI leaves compared to the control (MI) suggests conversion of thylakoid membranes to gel phase. Chloroplasts prepared from HI seedlings showed higher rate of photochemical activities, however, the activity declined earlier and at faster rate compared to the control. and Rajendra K. Behera, Nakul K. Choudhury.
In order to investigate the effect of chromosome doubling on ozone tolerance, we compared the physiological responses of a diploid honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica Thunb.) and its autotetraploid cultivar to elevated ozone (O3) exposure (70 ng g-1, 7 h d-1 for 31 d). Net photosynthetic rate (PN) of both cultivars were drastically (P<0.01) impaired by O3. Although there were significantly positive correlation between PN and stomatal conductance (gs) in both cultivars under each treatment, the decreased gs in O3 might be the result rather than the cause of decreased P N as indicated by stable or increasing the ratio of intercellular to ambient CO2 concentration(Ci/Ca). PN under saturating CO2 concentration
(PNsat) and carboxylation efficiency (CE) significantly decreased under O3 fumigation, which indicated the Calvin cycle was impaired. O3 also inhibited the maximum efficiency of photosystem II (PSII) photochemistry in the dark-adapted state (Fv/Fm), actual quantum yield of PSII photochemistry (ΦPSII), electron transport rate (ETR), photochemical quenching coefficient (qP), non-photochemical quenching (NPQ), the maximum in vivo rate of Rubisco carboxylation (Vcmax) and the maximal photosynthetic electron transport rate (Jmax) which demonstrated that the decrease in PN of the honeysuckle exposed to elevated O3 was probably not only due to impairment of Calvin cycle but also with respect to the light-harvesting and electron transport processes. Compared to the diploid, the tetraploid had higher relative loss in transpiration rate (E), (gs), (PNsat), Vcmax and Jmax. This result indicated that the Calvin cycle and electron transport in tetraploid was damaged more seriously than in diploid. A barely nonsignificant (P=0.086) interaction between O3 and cultivar on PN suggested a higher photosynthetic sensitivity of the tetraploid cultivar. and L. Zhang ... [et al.].
To elucidate whether dipterocarp species, dominant late-successional species of tropical forests in Southeast Asia, actually have a disadvantage when planted on open site in terms of their photosynthetic characteristics, we investigated photosynthesis in dipterocarp seedlings planted in the open on degraded sandy soils in southern Thailand. These species were compared with seedlings of Acacia mangium Willd., a fast-growing tropical leguminous tree, which is often planted on degraded open site in Southeast Asia. The dipterocarp seedlings had an irradiance-saturated net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (gs), carboxylation efficiency, and photosynthetic capacity comparable to or superior to those of A. mangium. In particular, seedlings of Dipterocarpus obtusifolius Teijsm. ex Miq. showed an irradian-ce-saturated PN of 21 µmol m-2 s-1, a value higher than any previously reported for a dipterocarp species, accompanied by high gs (0.7 mol m-2 s-1) and high photosynthetic capacity. Thus dipterocarp species do not necessarily have a disadvantage in terms of their photosynthetic characteristics on open sites with degraded sandy soils. and M. Norisada, K, Kojima.
